Some initial [email protected] S10+ - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Spent quite sometime with the S10+, well ..with a live demo unit.
Some personal initial impressions:
- Though secure , ultrasonic fp scanner is slow, slower than the optical scanner on the OnePlus 6T- something that is already slower than a conventional capacitive scanner. Also, once registered, it was a hit or a miss everytime I tried unlocking as I was not able to memorize the suitable spot @ FP scanner when I wasn't careful enough .Samsung is likely to make the experience better with future updates and I hope my muscle memory will improve in future. Also, wet finger and the scanner are against each other- doesn't work
(with a quick OTA [email protected] build no G975FXXU1ASBA, the FP recognition is now improved)
- No notification LED anymore.
- Bixby sucks like before. Now with an addition like Bixby routine that mimics Google assistant routine.
- Slipperly back.(- prism white, don't know about the other vatiants yet). Felt like it slips more than my Note 9 on the same surface.(just felt when I tried alongside the Note9, no accurate testing).
- Since bezels are thinner than ever, it felt like I was blocking the border contents accidentally no matter how I was holding.
- Feels lighter, way lighter than the Note 9 and also shorter, narrower.
- Primary shooter has two zoom modes compared to one in the Note 9.
- Bezel-less and a very premium design overall.
- Bigger battery ,yet smaller form factor. Yet to understand the endurance though.
PS: I see negatives in a gadget fast, way faster than the positives. As such, the +ve points would easily overpower the -ve points on the S10's, especially the +model.

I assume there would be a setting to show on the screen where the sensor is located to guide you, either on the AOD or lock screen. I'm a little upset about the wet finger and scanner not working. I thought that was a perk of having this type of sensor...

Have you dug around in the settings to see if there is a setting to use part of the screen as the "notification LED"? I've heard rumors that the camera bezel is used in place of the notification LED.

Aside from the fp registration process , I was not greeted with any other guidance once the screen was locked.Unfortunately, the demo I spent time on, wasn't showing that in default settings and I did not dig further into the settings to find out. If not there, I assume Retail units will have it.
Again.. it's just that I couldn't find an LED on the status bar. Will update more about how notification is taken care of using AOD(if at all it's different from existing ones and paid special attention to, for notifications) when I play with it again.

This doesn't make sense. Are you sure the device wasn't faulty? Also when your turn on the device the lockscreen has an indicator of where to place your finger to unlock the device on all on the videos I've seen. Something must be wrong with the device you played with.

Didn't notice anything of the sort on retail units. Of course, defects can happen to any product.

A lot of the people reviewing the phone said they had the same issues with the FP reader.

I see many YouTubers reviews in regards to the FP reader, I'll wait and test myself.
Same was said with the optical that they are slow and Don't function, now I have tested and owned the Huawei mate 20 pro that was just fine, I did not have the issues YouTubers were crying on about.
I now have the Vivo Nex S and again no issues it unlocks first time, I would put it in the say 98% odd occasion it might be slow or not respond as well. I must be the fortunate one I guess lol
What I am saying is don't buy Into the beeeep, sometimes they are full of beeeep, not saying it will be perfect, but I can say from my optical use I haven't been annoyed with it. It well works 98% of the time.

Yeah, I did read a few similar articles and to find out, I checked 2 more units today . NO, I did not see any such option . Counting from settings in camera to notification to developer options , I just could not find any such thing.

That's screen burn. I did not see that in few other units. Rest be assured that the "pink hue" that plagued the S6 series is not the case here :good:

1. Definitely it was not faulty. I had to pretty much forget the fp scanner when finger was totally wet. When it was slightly wet, it was hit or a miss situation. I tested it with another unit today only to have the same result. Then tested with one more unit - nothing changed.
2. When you register fp, it shows , once the screen goes off ,it doesn't anymore. You will have to wake the screen first , only then the "indicator" shows, not when you directly would want to unlock using the fp from the lockscreen when it's off. Dug further into settings and AOD to look for any possible toggle, found none. With AOD, it indeed showed up notification and stuff but not the fp guide/indication. Toggles like lift to wake and the new "double tap to wake" (new for a samsung without 3rd party launcher) are there .
Going forward, I spoke to a Samsung senior level trainer ( is known to me) (& for God's sake I did not want to talk to customer care execs) who later told me "the phones you have tested are with pre-release software and some are with Retail mode on in them without having the actual Retail software meant for customers. You will see "all that" once it is officially released in the market(i.e. 8 March).
I will have a full retail unit in March 6th for sure. Till then, let's see what more info we get. :good:

AR emoijis are customizable: Skin color, hair, clothes, facial features, name and age. They seem to have idle actions such as dancing. Keep in mind that I didn't try AR in previous phones can't do a direct comparison.
Also, you can create AR emoji masks (where your head is replaced). The camera supports HDR10+ & HEVC (one or the other!).

In terms of looks they're closer to Microsoft's avatars, since they're deformed humans instead of animals or emojis. Facial tracking is still there, so you can blink or whatever. Dunno if it'll gain traction with content creators, but I can see myself using masks.

Just played with a S10 in store and there is an indicator on AOD for where to place your finger for the fingerprint sensor. Dunno what software OPs unit is running but it doesn't seem to be the latest.

Yes I've noticed that too in a YT video. But I did not see that in AOD on, with the units I played with. (attached pic).
Unless tapped on the screen, that area was not visible. That experience is similar to this video: timing at 04.00

Odd

From TK Bay's video. Gif showing the fingerprint placement hint when the screen is off without AOD.

A70 bugs

i think it would be nice if we have all spotted bugs in one place...if you spot some bugs write about it here...
mine as follows...
1. sometimes screen won't lit up when someone is calling, or when call is ended screen is still dark and you can't touch screen to end call or whatever...you have to press power button...auto brightness is slow to went up as well if i am outside and someone is calling me while sun is bright and drop directly on the screen....
2. wifi is working wonky...many times a day i have exclamation mark near wifi sign and no internet over wifi...signal strength is perfect but internet is lost over wifi...
A70's display turns dark pixels off instead of dimming them, as if they were completely black. Which leads to difficulty and inability to see dark things properly+distortion of the displayed thing because a lot of pixels are turned off.
http://imgur.com/a/w9tLNAJ
I know it's not a bug, but it is still a pain, "raising the volume above a certain level..." warning. Even when I'm playing thru a bluetooth speaker.

This is a lock screen bug introduced somewhere around the time AF5 was released. It doesn't apply to anything but the lockscreen.
i have problems with auto rotate and answering calls...if phone is in landscape mode and i bring it up to answer call screen is rotating in portrait mode and froze?? whole screen moved to the right so i can see only green phone icon but can't answer call because screen becomes unresponsive? i have some inconvenient situations with some very important calls where people thinks how i don't want to answer calls...
try it for yourself, take phone in landscape mode and call yourself from some other phone and see what happens...
I wasn't able to replicate that bug. During the incoming call, screen returned to portrait mode but I was able to answer or decline the call.
Device: SM-A705FN/DS with build number A705FNXXU3ASG6.
mine stuck many times since i have the phone...it looks weird, i can see half the screen with green icon as the only visible icon but screen becomes unresponsive...also, phone didn't react to side buttons...
Missed call notification is not themed.
Any solution for this ?
Wifi completely drops out like every 30 minutes. Considering returning this phone because it's so bad.
Almost all of the above problems I have too. And + another I notice the screen becomes on and unlocked too in my pocket, until I disabled double click activate screen.. And fingerprint is worst quality as well as I used to in Mi 9.
always on display bug and many bugs more
samsung phones are very bad quality in terms of software. many many bugs.
many illogical behaviors, samsung ui is worst, samsung bixby virtual assistant is worst.
phones are full of bloatware.
even the most basic functions are full of bugs.
1- i store my contacts in google account, in google contacts. i have about 2 thousand contacts, but 1800 of them are hidden. under "my contacts" there are about 200 contacts. before i used iphone, it syncs with only the "my contacts" group, it does not sync the hidden contacts.
2- i bought a samsung a70 recently, added my google account. hoping that everything will work fine. because many years passed and samsung must have had a better experience with google services.
however under contacts i see all my 2000 contacts, hidden contacts, phone contacts and sim contacts.
and there is no way to filter them out.
3- always on display has problems. it just does not work.
4- underscreen fingerprint reader is a horror. it does not read frequently.
they made a very bright green animation to read the fingerprints. when you are in a dim environment or at night, it is like a green laser light very very bright. its just so annoying very bright green laser light.
when i watched the earlier versions of underscreen fingerprint reader, it had a soft ripple animation.
but after many complaints that the fingerprint is not reading accurately, they thought that, lighting the finger with bright green color helps to read fingerprint.
as a conclusion dont bother the samsung phones, they are very very bad quality in terms of software.
full of bugs and bloatware.
even an 4 year old iphone se, with IOS 13.1 is much much superior to samsungs latest phones...
The fingerprint sensor has massively improved with recent firmware. I don't have any issue with its speed now, so check if there's an update available for your device.

do you really think that i did not check the updates?
all firmware, playstore and samsung store updates are installed.
the samsung phones are just a mess. full of bugs and bloatware. without any support.
compared to the quality of hardware, software support and services with iphones, samsungs should have been sold 1/10 th price of an according iphone.
i will take some videos of all the bugs i find and put on youtube.
on screen fingerprint reader is a disaster.
at night, or on dimmed screen, why the screen should pop up the most vivid laser like green in order to read a fingerprint, which is a 10 year old technology.
the screen is so bright green that, all the room is green one of a sudden. it hurts my eyes.
and there is no way to change it.
my ten year old first gen iphone 5s can read fingerprints ten times accurate and faster and 1000 times quiter than the samsung a70.
"do you really think that i did not check the updates?
all firmware, playstore and samsung store updates are installed."
Then you've not had the update, because it IS that much better.
I'm not going to address the iPhone comparisons, except to say we dont share the same views.
As for the green light on the FPR, yes it is to read the finger prints better. That isn't a Samsung problem, it's an inherant problem with optical readers. They aren't too hot in direct sunlight either. But then what else would you expect from new first gen in screen optical readers? You know what, though? You dont have to use the fpr at night, you can still punch your pin code in instead....

Because its an optical reader and just like us humans it doesn't see very well in the dark. That is not a Samsung issue, its a draw back of optical technology. Look at the one plus 6Ts optical sensor, they are the same. If you want an fpr that works in the dark you should have paid more and bought a phone with an ultrasonic sensor. Spend budget money and you'll get a budget phone. You need to understand that budget phones have to cut corners somewhere.

Neither do pixel phones. Again, not a Samsung issue, its a Google sync issue. I'm guessing iPhone handle it differently.
As for one UI being the worst, it's the only android UI designed for tall displays. It's easily the best.

Should have bought an iPhone, but you didn't - you bought a budget android phone instead. Jeez.
a70 always on display bugs
Always On Display feature, Display Mode -> Tap to show is not working correctly. it has a bug on Samsung A70.
when tapped on screen, it should have showed the clock for 10 seconds. I tried on A30, it is working as expected.
but on A70 instead it shows the clock 2 seconds, turns the screen off, and at the end of the 10th second, just blinks the clock for the last time.
such a basic bug, i really wonder, are there any test engineers working at Samsung??? such a fake company.
and this bug was there from the start,
and is continued with the September 1 update also...
A70 can not detect touches at the very edges
another problem/poor quality of the A70,
A70 can not detect finger touches at the very edge of the screen.
you can test yourself by the program PhDoctor. this program has a "Touch" section, which enables to test the touch screen quality.
A70 can only detect touches, almost 2mm inside the edges of the screen.
but for example samsung A30 can detect touches until the very edge of the screen, almost 0 mm.
iphones can also detect touches until the very edge of the screen...
samsung ?

[Q] Why my fingerprint scanner is so awful?

Hi, question: i have a Note 10+ with all updates and updated via adb to Android 10 but my fingerprint scanner is still really awful. I have seen all yt video, seen all tuto on how to set the fingerprint but nothing!
Still awful, especially when finger is a bit wet. Is there a solution or is it better change the phone?
Maybe it is the way you registerd your fingerprints, my fingerprint sensor is accurate all the time
Are you using a screen protector? Mine sucks too. I have a glass one with the thin area in the glad over the sensor and I have used privacy film and it's ehh. It works perfect with nothing on it. Try turning the touch sensitivity up in settings and maybe re-register the print again.
Sent from my SM-N975U1 using Tapatalk
(The touch sensibility have nothing to do with the fingerprint sensor though.)
Maybe they finger print again but dont press to hard

You probably have, but try registering your fingers upside down and side ways.. and register loads of times with the same finger you mainly use, im sure you know all this though

, no, it is not, mine as many others work just fine, the fingerprint sensor for whatever reason doesn't work the same for all, odd, but not a so uncommon issue, and this happens among all brands
I partially blame the size of the sensor as well as the way they guide users through the enrollment process. The standard android fingerprint enrollment process, as i've experienced on my HTC U11 and Razer Phone 2, prompts for more finger edge samples. I actually went through the process on the Note as the software prompts and had mixed results. I then just decided to hit the sensor randomly with some overlap to give it a better overall picture of my finger as opposed to a bunch of samples of the same spot and then a few variants.
If you shine a flashlight at the screen you'll see the sensor size. It is a short rectangle that doesn't seem to cover the area that the fingerprint icon covers. I have an amFilm whitestone-style screen protector and while there is a slight difference, the stock experience was also not that great. I would recommend you try to figure out how you ACTUALLY use the fingerprint unlock. I noticed that while i'm enrolling i'm focusing on pushing with my fingers dead-on, in practice i actually use just the upper right corner of my thumb (if you're looking at the fingernail top-down). When I realized that I trained it with that in mind and it did perform better.
There was mention of the ones in the One Plus devices, which are actually different in that they are optical. Because they light up and read optically they have a more controlled environment than what the ultrasonic sensor on the Samsung phones. I can see someone with a deeper fingerprint patten be able to get better results vs someone with a very faint fingerprint. On oneplus devices though it would just be a different picture, but i'm thinking on an ultrasonic sensor there might not be enough peak and valley information to pass the threshold. Maybe samsung can make the pattern require less data points to match to unlock, but that would also mean it is less secure.
Bottom line is that while the tech has the potential to be more secure than optical under glass, it still has a little ways to go but it is serviceable once you get to it. I don't have big hands so i have to hold the phone in a very specific way to get a good grip on it. Once i figured that out, training the sensor again did yield better results.
I have the same problem. In sorry you haven't received a resolution, especially from Samsung who manufactured the Galaxy Note 10 Plus. I'm believe they were aware that it did not work with many 3rd party cases with protected screen covers. No matter how you register with screen off or on, the reader is intermittent and doesn't work with the cover. I hope you get the resolution as it will solve my issue as well.
The fingerprint registration process seems very glitchy too but after having experienced an awful 40% success rate with waking the phone using my fingerprint I deleted all the stored prints and started again. The secret is in storing decent prints so keep doing this until the phone unlocks with a 90%+ success rate like mine does now.

General Initial impressions

Got my Sunny Yellow one delivered this morning so been playing with it most of the day. Initial impressions are very good, some are listed below. Feel free to list your own.
The fingerprint scanner was a little off but after an update came in i deleted my fingerprints and re-did them and its been fine ever since. Couple of times it hasnt worked but i think thats because the screen is so smooth/slippery that my thumb slipped on the screen as it was trying to read it.
I dont have a 5g plan or even 5g signal where i am to test but so far 4g speeds are exactly the same as my pixel 2xl and oppo reno 2 ive come from.
I dont really like having the "internet" tile, id prefer having them seperate the wifi and mobile data tab. Just seems strange to add a further click to enable/disable wifi when i want to instead of just hitting the tab.
On the home screen if you make a folder then the apps slightly overhang the edge of the circle which just looks odd to me, i wish they were all within the folder.
I wish there was an option of disabling the big clock on the lock screen. I have a picture of my partner on my lock screen and when picking up the phone id rather see her than her face covered by a huge clock
The phone got very hot when setting up and transferring apps/data from my old phone but has been fine since.
I love the screen and how smooth everything flows. I dont see any issue with brightness personally. Ill see how battery life performs over the coming days
Hollow screen sound is a bit strange
Nova launcher crashes which is a shame because I don't like the search bar forced at the bottom of the screen on the pixel launcher.
Camera is brilliant
Power button is in the wrong place and should be swapped with the volume buttons is.
Lack of screen protectors available to get delivered is frustrating but not Google's issue.
It's fast, smooth and had a great camera. The rest I am still get used to. Prefer it to my S21 ultra, maybe not loving it as much as my Mi 10 Pro.
The camera hump on the back really exposes the glass to potential damage. If I were designing the thing, I'd make the entire back stick out higher than the camera glass, and fill in the space with more battery.
The rounded edge screen is pretty terrible. There are optical distortions along the sides. The radius of the edge should be reduced to around 1 mm.
A little more width on the screen would be nice. This is 71.5mm. Nexus 6 was 74, which was a lot nicer. 80 would be a dream.
A little bit of border around the screen would also be nice so you have somewhere to actually hold the thing. Function should be paramount, not form, and especially not goofy/ugly form like these have. A bit of border above the screen would make space to get the camera out of the screen instead of the ugly hole. I also hate the rounded corners on the screen. Software rounded corners are ok, because you can disable them, there is no reason to force it with paint on the inside surface of the glass.

feel the same way with filling up the space with more battery... but then you have ppl complaining about how fat the phone is
Love it so far, so fast and fluid. As mentioned above it gets real hot, and was still discharging while using old pixel charger.
Camera is amazing the details captured are stunning.
Phone is very slippery to hold and would be easy to drop with the top weight of the camera hump. Tried to buy a case for grip and protection, and was told that they can until tomorrow because that was the day the phone was supposed to be delivered, but because of our crap postal service they sent a day early so that people would or should get them by that date
Real time translation works very well, even with the new update still seems a little buggy
Screen for me is fine for brightness I have high brightness mode widget and it is much brighter than the 4xl
I could buy pixel charger which I might take back because it doesn't seem to charge an faster.

I agree, but it also would be heavy
This is concerning "Nova launcher crashes which is a shame because I don't like the search bar forced at the bottom of the screen on the pixel launcher." Hopefully there will be an update to Nova soon.
All the negative feedback on the rounded edges are making me consider the Pixel 6 versus the Pro. I think the base RAM on the 6 is fine. Giving up the Zoom is tougher to consider.

There as a day when heavy meant PREMIUM and light meant junk.
My laptop (lenovo), not even old, actually had some weights added into it to make it feel more substantial.
And so what if its a little heavier as long as it isn't burdensome. You can easily carry around several pounds without it being burdensome.

If you were referring to the rounded CORNERS, there will be kind-of software solutions for the rounded corners. Right now you can run "wm size 1440x2890" to reduce the display area (persistently). This brings the display area past the camera hole and past the rounded corners. Now normally, there would be a system property available to adjust the corners, however this one has multi-radius corners which are set in a config for systemui, therefore will actually require a rebuild from source to fix, but once that is unset, it should have square corners.
However the side effect of course, will be a slightly smaller display area. Still wider than the non-Pro, but less than it is now. Not that you need all that height for any practical purpose.
And for that matter, you could use the same "wm size" command to reduce the display width to work around the rounded edges. "wm size 1300x3120" pulls the display area all the way into the flat part and eliminates the optical distortions. You could probably establish a better balance that lets it in just a little bit and probably gives the same width as the non-Pro.

Nova Launcher was crashing for me but it seemed to be a clock widget I had previously and it wasn't displaying it.
I deleted the widget and rebooted the phone and it has been perfect since and all day today.
My screen now looks like my 3XL only longer, faster, smoother
I can't find a was to Turn off Always on Display. Ist ist me, or isn't there an option?
Thanks for the tip on Nova, might rebuild my screen from scratch with it too ID the issue. The pixel launcher without some custom apps and grid sizes is a bit of a jarring experience. Search at the bottom is all wrong too.

Have you gotten the small 70 MB Android update yet? Mine was buggy with Nova Launcher Prime, in particular, but after the update, all good.
I like the fingerprint reader better than the ultrasonic in my Note 10+. It's working much better and faster for me so far. Here's hoping that stays true.

Search play for high brightness mode or HBM software by @flar2 an amazing kernal and software developer
According to Goggle I have a defective unit and they are going to swap it out

General First impressions - not great

So 2 days in, some real life testing and me not liking. Here's why:
Firstly, I noticed that the screen is yellowy, it's not pure white like you'd find from the S21 phones for example. It's minor but it bothers - like a niggling suspicious this phone can't manage the basics. White isn't white. Reality is overrated. [edit, so ok this might be a setting issue]
Secondly, taking photos of white surfaces in darker rooms and white turns blue. I don't mean, faintly tinged, I mean blue!
The phone is well balanced in the hand (unlike the S21U), however it feels very plasticy and cheaply built. Something about putting the power button above the volume rocker is not nice after 3 years with Samsung phones which are the other way around.
So, the camera AI is good, photo's look on the surface to generally be good quality. Noise is well handled by the AI but zoom in and you seen there's a lots of smoothing on a minute level. This is the sole Pixel win over the S21U in my opinion. [edit: watch out for 'bars' of 'noise' in photos though and random white balance issues - the latter is probably not as bad as Samsung's over HDR/WB saturation though]
The 5G modem, ow god, this is awful. I know, because I have a Samsung with the same modem and good look having working connectivity where the 5G signal is sub par - the phone should drop 5G and revert to more reliable 4G but it doesn't. You just end up with a dead connection. Walk around and experience disconnection from your digital world.
Why the feck can I not turn off 5G, I mean the preference option just isn't there. In no way. If your carriers 5G or 4G network flakes out, you are screwed. How dare you think of manually swapping to another technology to stay connected. Silly, stupid, user. Google (and your carrier) knows best... ergh
VoLTE/4G calling seems flaky on some networks - EE UK - well, you can't. They blame Google, Google blame EE. Good luck with that.
Make sure to cover your eyes when using the finger print reader in the dark too - it's optical/super cheap so it is the brightest light you'll ever see. I have notice one of my blood vessel is bit blocked. Great medical device. A++
I really wanted to love the Pixel 6 Pro. I have lived with a sub par S21U for 9 months. I thought it was lots of marketting spin and less substance. I was wrong. I'm a Samsung fanboi forever now. They can throw me their *(£" and I'll happily lap it up after this massive disappointment.
It'll improve with software updates. Just hold on. These are just the typical usual new problems.... yeah, after 5 years of hearing the same old crappy excuses by manufacturers, I think I'll go with my gut this time.
Hey, Google, where's my refund?!
The fingerprint reader alone is why this is going back. Holy Christ. What were they thinking? If their goal was to create a bunch of eWaste then they succeeded.

I got my P6 Pro today and would like to add something to a few of your points
1. My screen white is white, maybe your panel sucks?
2. Jea, the blue tint is well known in low light shots. Also visible in several reviews. Many phones go yellowish, googles algorithms goes blueish.
3. I actually prefer the power button above the volume rocker, so that's personal taste.
4. The smoothing comes from the Super Rez Zoom algorithm
5+6: Not sure if it's your provider, but I can set my preferred network, I can tell the phone to prefer either 5G, 4G, 3G or 2G.
my screen was yellow until i changed wallpaper settings to basic colour options and it became white.
Funny how people can view the same thing so differently but some of these are simply not true.
You can change network type away from 5G, first thing I did.
Samsung panels are absolutely not colour accurate to compare against.
Some of the other things are subjective. Build quality I think is great, my unit is as well built as any Samsung, iphone or One Plus I have owned.
Lol that post about not turning off 5g! Seriously...look at what you can actually do before mentioning something so basic.
Secondly power button location different to Samsung is not a fault it's a design choice and your preference. All my OnePlus phones had power above volume also.

Oneplus phones have the volume on the left and the power on the right with the alert slider. Been that way since at least the 5. Seems like you would know this before mentioning something so basic LOL.
The blue in photo taken in a dark room is a WB issue most likely and/or there simply wasn't enough light in the red spectrum vs blue when shot.
May or may not be a defect or software glitch.
Samsung actually puts a lot of effort into their UI.
It looks and acts nothing like a Pixel. Samsung's stock customization is second to none with hundreds of free customization apps, themes and icon packs. I saw nothing released this year I wanted; display problems, 5G issues, major Android 11/12 fubars, and no SD card slot on most of the flagships.
So... fk it, got a 2nd new N10+ 4G Snapdragon running on 10. No regrets.
If on AT&T, you do not get to choose between 4g lte or 5g. The option is not available. AT&T forces you onto 5g.

What's wrong with it? I've used mine for almost 24 hours now and I have not had it fail a single time. I added each finger twice.
It's not that it's broken, it's that it's annoying. It's slow as hell compared to my 4a 5Gs traditional FPR and it lights up like a Christmas tree Everytime you use it. No thanks.
I have multiple fingers saved, it fails more times than it succeeds

P6 Pro screen is a Samsung panel too.
About these fingerprint sensors.... unlike a knowledge-based password or pattern, biometric data is NOT protected by the US 5th amendment or laws in other jurisdictions that protect you against self-incrimination.
Nothing to hide? Then don't need a security lock to begin with, so its a non-starter if you try to argue that.

You sure about that? Might be. However in general what they mean is as found on phones with a samsucks label on them. They calibrate them in a more cartoonish manner.

Not on mine you can't. I guess it's poor of carrier to stick that in their configuration and even worse for Google to enable the option in the first place...
The screen colour might be rectified as advised - the colour of photos on the Pixel 6 is more realistic but then the white balance is a lottery. [not that Samsung are great at it either of course!]

You might have a dud. Mine is better than the Samsung one (but hey, I last set up that like 6 months ago) but the light. Ow, the blinding light. I don't want to see the composition of my thumb each time I want to unlock the phone!

Question Poll: How well does your Pixel 6/6 Pro Fingerprint Scanner work?

I made this thead poll as a guideline so we can see how many people are/aren't having issues with their FP scanners. If you are having issues what are the main issues?
I really don't have an issue with it and if Google's response to it's slow because of extra security then I'll take security over nanno seconds delay in unlocking my phone. Now that I have removed all the fancy useless animations, like I do on my phones it actually just seems as fast if not faster then on my S20. Yes when I 1st got my pixel 6 pro it did seem slower especially when like myself you have come from having Samsung flagship devices, I think a lot of the problems come down to muscle memory and now I've had my device for a couple of weeks I hit it bang on 9 times out of 10 just like my on my previous devices. It does what it's meant to do and that's secure your precious data on your phone. I wish I had a 3rd device so I could do a comparison video to demonstrate my unlocking experience.
I had a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Switched to Pixel 6 Pro and the fingerprint sensor on the Pixel, for me, is much better!
I set them up the same, but I like that the light shines through my thumb, it makes it more obvious that I have it right. For me the Pixel is better, much better.
Works as well as my OnePlus finger print reader, just fractions of a second slower.
Not had to change any setting such as animations for it to be reliable and just work.
Been fine for me, I'm guessing those having issues have small fingers.............I'd still prefer one on the back
works alright for me, but definitely not as instant unlock as I had on the 4XL. sometimes though I need to hold my finger on the screen for a second and a half to unlock, but most of the time it's quicker
You needed another option between 50% and 95%. Maybe "most of the time but not quite 95%" None of the three options fit my experience, sorry. Oh yeah, one more. "I use smart unlock so it doesn't bother me much." lol
No real issue. It's better than the LG G7 fpr I'm coming from which would consistently stop working for days.
Works better than the S20 Ultra and the S21 Ultra ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that I've used in the past.
I had a Note 20 Ultra as well and I didn't like the FP scanner on it too much but the S21 Ultra's was accurate and fast. The Pixels is super accurate, just a tad slower but it doesn't bother me at all since it works just about 100 percent of the time.
Works fine for my usage...
I've been having a good bit of issues with the fingerprint scanner and they aren't related to speed., about half of the time the Pixel 6 Pro can't read my finger print at all. I'm coming from Oneplus 7 Pro that feels light years ahead of this fingerprint scanner. I've tried all the tips and tricks people have been recommending, which has helped, but it still says can't read fingerprint 50% of the time. It's very frustrating.

Did you re-do your fingerprints after the most recent firmware update? (november)
Also did you heed the fingerprint setup instructions? (full underside first, then sides, then the tip etc). Meaning don't mindlessly hammer your finger on the screen, do what the setup tells you precisely and exactly.
The system tells you what to do - if you do that, it should work without a problem. I got my finger in the system (4x times the same one, just re-do the setup with the same finger) and it works without a problem, nowadays I am getting about ~95% success rate. Even partial ones get through, even though they might take a second or two to register, but that's okey since it's just a partial one.
---
Btw concerning the video that was spreading through reddit, where someone claimed that his girlfriend was able to unlock his phone, without ever having it set up - I recently found that it's possible to use two fingers when setting up one fingerprint at a time (go with one full thumb, then when it asks for the sides, use the other finger from the other person) - that probably happened here, someone tricked the system and then spread fakenews to gain a few likes/attention.

You're welcome.
The fingerprint setup system was changed after the firmware update, so it's basically mandatory to re-do your fingerprints if you want a higher success rate.
It's a shame that Google doesn't communicate this directly, it should be a system message suggestion right after the update.
What I'm wondering is that maybe some people ended up with a bad FP scanner? I mean it is a possibility since anything can be bad but hopefully we can get enough feedback to get closer to the bottom of this. If someone who has a bad scanner can try someone else's and see if it's still an issue that would probably help although it's not like everyone you know will have a Pixel.
My pixel 6 pro fingerprint reader works most of the time for me. The worst fingerprint reader I've ever used was the Galaxy s20 ultra. That thing didn't read my finger half the time so I just defaulted to the password.
I didnt vote, but mines works about 80 to 90 percent of the time. but it sucks when it doesnt work. It seems it happens at the worst times possible.
It's good but not as fast, accurate or convenient as my Pixel 5 with the Ringke Fusion case and convenient finger-centering sensor cutout.
