Refurbished 5x question - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking at buying a refurbished 5x, my ? Is; knowing the issues with various 5xs is there a place selling refurbs that will be free of most of these issues or is buying one just the same gamble?
I've owned one before and fixed the boot loop once before but then my child accidently threw it. /Shrug
Have a g6 but just want something that is more open development wise.

@meatwad0222, don't know anything about refurbished N5X and the mine still works well, but 4 active Pie-ROMs ½year after introduction isn't a reason to buy one, IMO.

moto g6 has no solid development. there is no continual rom development and i dont have the time to try myself. also whst 1/2 a year are you talking about?

@meatwad0222: half a year after introducing Pie.

I tried to like it

When I bought my g4 I was torn between the g4 and the nexus 6.
I chose the g4 based on how much I liked my g3 and after having this g4 for 6 weeks I just cannot take these touch screen issues and a few other minor issues. Since the nexus 6 was on sale at Amazon I jumped on it.

Thanks for letting us know?
I don't give a crap if it's 11 months old! It still will keep up with 95% of today's flagship phones. The point of my post was that the verizon version of the lg g4 has a lot of issues and my window to return has passed. But thanks for the sarcastic and usual XDA comment.

Well come on. You go on the G4 forums saying how you dislike the G4. I have no idea what you were expecting for a response...

The Nexus 6 has a much worse camera too.
So you felt the need to create a thread on the G4 forum about how your return window was almost up and decided to get a different phone?
The point of my post was that the g4 (verizon version) has been a complete letdown and that I followed this sub forum since getting the phone and the threads with the most comments are the root threads and/or touch screen problems. When I upgraded from the g3 I thought I would be getting a better product. Neither LG or Verizon will acknowledge the issues this version has. That's why I gave up on the phone, maybe it's a downgrade? All I know is that my particular phone sucked ass and it's great to have a phone that at just works.

Although some are being babies about people talking smack about their beloved LG G4, I think this was a valuable post. He will surely help others who are unsure as to go with the G4 or not. If I were looking to buy a phone that was 100% solid, and came across a thread like this saying that someone gave it an honest try and couldn't continue, I would be very thankful.
Personally i've had zero issues with my VS986 and wouldn't trade it for anything. I would however be nervous if I broke it and had to claim insurance on it since there would be a chance that my replacement would have touchscreen issues.
Thanks OP! Enjoy your Nexus 6!
I understand your pains but you should have got a Moto X Pure. Slightly smaller, better specs, and sd card support. Mine will be in in a couple weeks.

Agreed, the Moto X Pure is pretty much better in every way.
So I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm thinking about selling the phone and grabbing the moto x pure. I'm on the edge program. If I sell the phone and pick up the pure, I know I can activate it at Verizon. Do I have to pay off the G4 before activating pure? Or can I just sell the G4, grab the pure, and continue making payments on the G4? Not sure if that would work or not.

Pretty sure whoever you sell it to won't be able to activate it, if it isn't paid off.

From my understanding, you can buy a new phone and/or sell your current one, but if you stop making payments then the person who bought your phone would no longer be able to use it as it's blacklisted.
Yes, this is true you can sell it just don't stop making the payments.

I would be hella pissed if my phone stopped working several months into it because the guy who sold it to me never paid it off. That sounds like a scam right there. I think Swappa even checks IMEI numbers prior to being posted.
My G4 is fantastic. I really have little to no problem with it. It runs great, battery is great, camera is amazing, stable, etc. My Qi Charging sticker WAS causing lockups throughout the night but those magically went away (for no apparent reason). It will occasionally miss taps (which I suspect to be a background process or CPU throttle issue) and the Notification light gets wonky occasionally (blinks when no notifications).
Other than that the G4 is a powerhouse. There are 2 new Nexus phones to be released this year and the LG seems to be a smaller brother to the G4 (SD 808, 2700mAh battery, 5.2" screen) and the Huawei which is rumored to either use their own CPU, SD810, or SD820 (which I doubt). I would be leery of any of the other 2 choices. If you were to get the LG, you would be sacrificing specs for plain Android (like always)
Phones on Verizon edge do NOT show as a financed phone. I know this seems wrong but it's true, I just checked my wife's droid turbo on swappa and it's clear for activation.

Technically Swappa does not allow the sale of a financed device per their listing criteria. However as far as I understand there is no way for them to verify if a phone is on an installment/payment plan.
well, I can only hope that you will like your nexus 6. Don't hate your phone~

Is it still worth getting the G4?

I'm looking for a mobile device with a good camera and CM support, is it still worth getting the G4? what are other options there that support CM and custom roms? thanks
CM support as in cyanogenmod? Unless if you're getting the very specific model that can be unlocked, I'd say look else where.
I know the Nexus 6P would be a nice choice for both CM and a decent camera. Not sure if the S6 has an unlocked bootloader, if it does, then that's a great choice as well since their camera is just about as good as the G4.
I'd get a G3. G4 has too many issues.

nah, that's totally wrong . If you get a phone with S/N 500+ then expect to have some issues, but if you get a phone with S/N 600+ don't expect to have issues because phones with 600+ are made in 2016.
How do you know that's wrong? There have been a few G4's in the 600's that bootlooped, as reported on here and other boards. Even fixed G4's are re-looping.
Fact is, the early G4's have been bootlooping recently and we can't say that any newer ones won't until some time passes. It's a time bomb situation. It's not a chance I'm willing to take on a $400 plus device.
Thanks to all for responses
No. Too many devices are bootlooping. Mine was bricked from it last week. Save your money and buy a Nexus 6p

Good camera and CM don't mix. Pick one. Any time you add CM you lose the stock camera.
The nexus will work but they are only a decent camera (lacks OIS) so not as good as the stock G4 camera.
is it worth getting a G4 ? heh of course. What else can compete with it now at the going price.
Never selling mine. It will be with me until it dies
Look for serials 510 and over and you will be ok. Try to get with warranty.
Thanks, I have the option to get a serial starting with 6 but I've heard that even these are having the bootloop problem, not sure though it is as frequent as the old ones.
No, just get another brand, lg sucks.

Not really. Mine is with 601 S/N and i have the screen flickering problem..
How many devices have gotten the bootloop problem? What would a rough estimate be, any idea's ?
Jesus, what a load of rubbish from some users! The G4 was one of the best devices of 2015, as chosen by every single reviewer out there! Maybe not No1, but definitly among the top. I have owned 3 G4 units at different stages, and am using one right now, and have had 0 issues. It is a perfect phone in every way especially with the low price tag. Sure, I would take a Galaxy Note 5 or S7 Edge over the G4 , but considering im paying about 1/2 of the price (at least in my country, New Zealand), im pretty happy! Flagship specs and performance with half the price.
I will be upgrading to the HTC 10 once it is available, but the G4 has absolutely served me well, and highly recommended to anyone.
All the reviewers praised it before the bootloop hit, six to eight months after release.
Upon release it had some moderate touch screen issues, but was otherwise a good phone. No one is disputing that. The problem is the bootlooping and how LG is/has handled it. It's not a small issue. There are users everywhere that have been hit by it, and LG has done nothing but offer repairs to some, while others have to fight for it, despite the issue being completely LG's fault.
In all honesty, the G4 isn't a big upgrade at all over the G3. If I was intent of getting an LG, I'd go for the G3. Almost the exact same phone with no fear of bootloop and a lower cost.

That's true, you can't deny the hardware issues that happens to some, even though it didn't happen to me. But come on now, the G3 ovee the G4? The ui was just too laggy on the G3, not to mention that horrible over sharpening of the screen. I would still happily pick the G4, CONSIDERING the price difference between the G4 and other flagships. If money was no issue then definitly I would go for other devices. But the value for money is just too good to pass on.
Anyway, I will be back to my beloved HTC once the htc 10 hits the market. Looks like a solid comeback from htc. You might disagree but I will cherish my time with the G4 [emoji4]

Nothing but offer repairs ? what pray tell is LG to do.
Those that bought with warranty are covered for as long as the term is.
Those that bought without warranty were taking on a risk. This is true with anything. But then people are so passionate in this forum about phones that nobody thinks twice. And they will do it again in a heartbeat

Camera on the G4 is a generation jump. The same module was used in the G2, G3 and G flex 1 & 2. They changed it with the G4 and what a difference it makes.

Puts things into perspective doesn't it.

Is the bootloop issue active to sway a new customer elsewhere

The G4's price at some spots like Amazon is amazing to pass up. I have done my research on various phones and stay active on everything. With to many phones and variants in existence I can't be an expert on all. I'm still seeing the bootloop issue in forums but LG addressed this like 6 months ago. Are new in box versions of the G4 fixed? Or will these be phones that set in a warehouse for a year and will have the problem. I'm a android enthusiast tweaker. So my next phone has to be a contender with development. The 2 most important things. I recently bought a OnePlus 2 but after a ridiculous amount of negativity regarding hardware/software issues and overall negative real world reviews I sent it back before the 30 days were up. Most of which was recent times sadly. While some people might have a great version OP2 with good luck way to many people were sitting with a $300 brick in another country waiting forever. Sorry to ramble but I've been searching for 2 months now for a great midrange device that can be bought at $300 or less and have development but not have a guaranteed broken feature.

its unknown if they really fixed problem... they said they did but still people is reporting bootloop issues with newer phones as well.. the amount of people reporting is low... but they say it takes 8-9 months to show up so we need time for this phones to reach that time and see if they all start bootlooping likes the 505's.
be aware that not all g4 can be bootloader unlocked..

First of all G4 isnt a faster or a better all performer...if u want performance n quality go for LG V10 and for bootloop its for real most phones are refurbished meaning they were bought last year were only used for a week or more just like urs and then were sold so after a couple a months they were shipped to other countries and were sold off.... these G4s werent at all used hence many didnt pass the bootlloop time period for it to get bricked but many will eventually...This bootloop issue is so real i had to buy a used G3 for 130US$ i use my G4 as a second phone my phone hasnt been bootlooped as of yet but it will certainly so i might just turn it off let it sleep

Appreciate the fast responses guys. I didn't know the bootloop was a time developing type issue. Good to know.
"Jinderation" The V10 is a great looking phone but that is a pure flagship device in my eyes as I can't get one cheaper than $500. At that price I have plenty of options. The G4 H810 I can obtain new for $278-$285 so its a big difference vs the V10. My cutoff is $299 before taxes. Since the bootloop is a real issue I guess I'm gonna have to pass. Seeing as you never know if you got that repackaged type used looks new phone. I love everything about this phone especially at that price with the options.
I don't know why but I first came into the mod world in 2008 with the IPhone. Around 2013 to date I've been in the Android world. Development on hardware and software seems to be rushed on everything now a days and something has "that issue" Owning a IPhone I new if there was a real bug a update was gonna come out fast and even the 2011 4S has up to date IOS 5 years later. These android developers need to stop developing 35 versions of a phone every year and make 3 or 4 and the variants and produce them right. Again thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'm back on my search list for that phone.
S5 or carrier model S6 is on ur budget also ..S6 doesnt have any mc slot i also had one sold and bought G4..you can also try buying a repaired G4 directly from LG which already had motherboard replaced the pro is ur device wont get bricked ever or u could check ebay for certain model which were produced in 2015..they also havent reported for bootloop issue... My advice go for Galaxy S5 F model or G3 t mobile lots of mods and custom rom is availabe and also these devices have bootloader unlock and then wait alteast an year for S7 OR its edge version to have its priced down then buy that
Also this is my topic im sharing with u...see the consumer review on 1st page that i have mentioned and yes bootloop is a very serious issue

Oneplus 5T releasing on 16th November. Why?

Is been only 3 months since I got my Op5 and there is already a new phone. Why OP why?
Saw the official post on instagram.
The phone will still be the same. I got mine by the end of july and i dont regret it at all
Because that's the way it goes. Same as people who open an new thread for similar questions that's already been answered.
My question is: "Why not?"
I'm gonna be pissed if it's not waterproof. Then it's really just large screen and slightly better front cam based on the rumors.
hopefully they kept capacitive keys, too, otherwise there's even less incentive to upgrade.
I agree
...with OP, this is ridiculous.
It was one thing for OnePlus to come out with the 3T, to incorporate the off-cycle introduction of the Snapdragon 821. But they now expect to support 2 flagship phones a year, every single year? They expect customer loyalty, when they just chose to obsolete us every six months? Insanity.
If your marketing tactics have a loyal, repeat customer such as myself wondering ”why the hell did I even buy this thing?" after only 5 months, you've failed.

Why not? I have this phone from June and i'm happy to have a new variant borderless & APN optimized. It's the same CPU/RAM, so performances will be the same, it's not a mandatory to change mate !
Ofcourse its not mandatory to change but when I buy a new phone, I dont expect the company to release new *flagship* killer phones every 6 months. I mean that's insane.
I mean, I'm sad because if you end up releasing new phones every 6 months with some changes to the previous models, I would always keep waiting as a consumer to buy a new phone from the company because I want the latest model.
Imho, they are just losing customers releasing new phones this quick.
I have a brilliant idea: Only buy the T revision phones, instead of being impatient. That will also teach OnePlus a lesson when their sales plummet.
If the jelly screen bug from oneplus 5 is gone i will get an 5T to replace my Mi6.
Really miss the 3.5 headphone jack.

Business is business unfortunately.
I genuinely don't mind flogging my OP5 in favor of putting up an extra £100 and buying the 5T.
New phone that incorporates some features I want. Honestly don't see what the issue is.
Also I don't see an issue with a company trying to improve it's product.

Look Ma! I got famous! ????
It should be atleast 50$ costlier than 5
Other smartphone manufacturers do this as well. It actually maximises sales.
The 5T isn't marketed to 5 owners. They're going after 3/3T owners looking to upgrade.
They should have added a microSD card slot, how much more can it be? The phone is big and already has room for it.

These days, people are after big screens, headphone jacks and large batteries. I think storage options seem to be okay with the 128gb in there. 256 would have been welcomed I suppose.
I would be happy to get updated phone even every 6 months or so, that would perfect.
Just came across the unboxing video link..

Buying Pixel 2 Xl on Swappa

Hi all, I have a Mate 10 which is the absolute best phone I've ever owned, but it's inability to function correctly with Android Auto is making me consider buying a Pixel (my wife's pairs just fine with AA). I see some people sell them on swappa brand new sealed box for $700 but without the warranty from Google. How bad is the screen issue and is it definitely quite possible I could be purchasing a dud? I'd rather spend the extra $$ and go through Google itself if so. Thanks!

My friend, you can find over 1000+ opinions from users on these threads. Believe what you want from them. Best thing you could do is go to a store, and check it out yourself. Personally, I haven't had any complaints or issues with my P2XL. I don't use AA, so I can't comment on that. All I know is that mine is fine as far as the screen is concerned
Bought mine of of Swappa. Swapped out my S8+ for it. Best decision I've made as far as phones go.

I see some people sell them on swappa brand new sealed box for $700 but without the warranty from Google. How bad is the screen issue and is it definitely quite possible I could be purchasing a dud? I'd rather spend the extra $$ and go through Google itself if so. Thanks!

Sold my S8+, Google was offering $200 credit on 128GB 2 XL. Snagged that deal, now running DU with Dolby and Viper no issues, couldn't be happier. Haven't noticed any screen issues either but YMMV. I'd rather have the warranty.

Warranty is done by IMEI and honored straight away unless phone has been blacklisted by phone carriers or Google.
Google repair doesn't ask for a receipt unless there's a blacklist issue.
Swappa does a check for bad phones before it can be listed.
So if you buy on Swappa from seller with more than 10 sales and solid 5 star feedback, that consumer experience plus PayPal and Swappa backing
and you aren't likely to have any issues. Have bought and sold there, and they for sure take care of problems.
I bought mine on Swappa and sold my international S8+, couldnt be happier. The seller sold me a week old phone, and gave me a copy of his receipt from Google. Just to be safe, I contacted Google and provided them the receipt. They said that the warranty is definitely good, and I would have not issues if I needed to file a claim. I have played with a couple Pixel 2 XL's and I honestly think the screen thing is blown out of proportion. I compared mine side by side with my S8, and my wife's Pixel XL, and you wouldn't know the difference. The both Pixels had a more cool color all together over the S8, but I honestly liked it more. I thought whites look better on the Pixel 2 XL.
I got mine on swappa as well.
While it is an excellent phone, the speakers aren't as good as I thought they'd be coming from a 6P.
More distortion/buzzing where the 6P had none.
And the lock screen is annoyingly aggravating. Trying to swipe a notification away takes 4-5 tries, even on the April security update and with substratum and magisk modules that supposedly fix the issue.
Hell, even trying to pull down the quick settings panel to toggle the flashlight takes multiple tries.
There is blue shifting at super high viewing angles, but unless you're looking at a completely white image, it's really not noticeable.
The lock screen swiping is far more annoying than the blue shift.
Made the switch from the Nexus 6P over. Purchased my XL 2 from swappa also. In my personal opinion I feel the screen issue was very overblown. Phone and process concerning swappa exceeded my expectations.
I'm looking to buy a pixel 2 XL on Swappa also.
I just can't believe how many there are being called brand new never opened but they never have a receipt. Where are all these coming from ?
So I shouldn't be concerned if it's an experienced seller with good ratings ?
Thanks for any input
An experienced seller with high rating would be your best bet...

I've been watching Swappa really close for the past 2 weeks as I'd like to pick up another couple 2XL's in Panda for my wife and daughter so we can switch to Project Fi.
I thought the exact same thing. I also think its hilarious how many of them are listed "Brand New, Sealed Box" and the 2nd and 3rd pictures are of the phone out of the "sealed box".
I grabbed one on Swappa a few weeks ago from a guy in Florida. Was a little nervous but it delivered asap, looks to be from Canada as best I can tell from the box. Have had 0 issues, unlocked it as soon as it landed, and works great.
