Hello Buddies,
I've just recently noticed that when I hold the phone near my ears to listen WhatsApp or Telegram voice messages privately, proximity sensor doesn't switch the voice sound into earpiece and after a 1 sec stop, it will play loudly again through the loudspeaker. I think this issue has appeared after Oreo 8.1 update. As I searched on internet, the factory reset would not help.
In other cases just calls, proximity sensor works well and the issue is only with voice messages to be heard through earpiece.
Anyone got the point?
My device: Nexus 5X - Android Oreo 8.1
UP!
Same problem for my brother's Nexus 5X, also after the latest update (december 2018) for this device. No solutions?
I've installed the latest versions of Magisk, ElementalX and TWRP.

Hi all,
Last Saturday my Nexus 5x was updated to Android 8.1.0 and after that all audio messages are only played from the loud speaker. I mean, the only app I use for messaging is Whatsapp, but it started happening after the OS update. Do you know when you bring the phone closer to the ear while an audio message is being played, so the system changes the speaker and reproduce from the top speaker(call speaker)? It's not working for me anymore. Instead of that, plays from the bottom speaker but even louder.
Before someone ask, the top speaker is working fine during calls. So it's not broken.
Can someone give me a hand on this? It's really annoying.
Thank you all in advance.

Same issue here for me. I found a workaround for it tho, when you put closer to your ear press the power button as if you're locking the screen. It makes it sound again at the top. It's super annoying tho and have been waiting for an update from WhatsApp. I had to become a beta tester for it on the play store since we're in beta too. Hope it fixes soon with an update from either WhatsApp or Google on the next beta.
I left the beta tester program

I left the Beta tester program because I thought it might impact on the issue. I've been a tester for more than a year

But still the problem persisted?
Yes, persisted.
After updating to 8.1 OPP5.170921.005, Alarm clock, Youtube, Whatapp and notifications can't be played on the speaker, through the P2 headphone jack works fine. Might be something related with this version.
The same here
Same here.
Contact Google and Factory Reset done. Nothing help.
I got this also on 8.1, but just when I'm getting a notification or other sound played (as if the other chatting guy sent another message while I'm listening to the audio message..) its through loud speaker.. otherwise, on earpiece
Experiencing same problem here =(
Has anyone found a solution?
Now in telegram too
with the last security update of android 8.1 on my nexus 5x i've the same problem every time in Whatsapp and sometimes in Telegram too...
Hello everyone, someone had problems with the Android 8.1 beta and the WhatsApp application? Since I updated, by pressing Play and taking the phone to my ear to listen to an audio message, it sounds through the external speaker (not the internal one). As if that were not enough, by plugging the proximity sensor the audio sounds with the volume of the Telephone application (not the multimedia one), which is usually quite high. If I discover the sensor, it sounds with the multimedia volume. Is it just a beta problem? Did someone else have this problem? Thank you all!
Sensor
I had the same problem. And issues with the camera too !! The photos with flash get black.
The final version of Android Oreo is also having this problem
Yes, same problem but I don't know a fix.
Did you report this to Google?
Same here, 8.1 final, got the OTA yesterday. A factory reset didn't help. I found this post on google forums about the issue: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/mlFRoZ07yq8;context-place=forum/nexus
I have the same problem, but in additon to that, while listening to a voice (coming out from the speaker whilt near my ear), if I receive any notification, the voice switches to the earpiece.
Before the OS update it was the othwr way arround, the voice was coming out of the earpiece correctly, but switches to the soeakerphone when I reveive any notification
I am using a nexus 5x
This is a known issue. It was first noticed / introduced in Android 8.1, around Dec/17.
It's not a problem with Android per say, but how the app implement or work with the platform. In other words, the app need to get fixed, adjusted to the new platform. Other apps, like Google Allo and Telegram have been reported to have the same problem, by some users.
I submitted a bug report myself to Whastapp and got this response:
Hi,
Thanks for your message.
Sorry for the inconvenience. We are aware of the issue and we are working on fixing it in a future update of WhatsApp. Unfortunately, we can't comment on any future release dates at this time.
Best Regards,
Murdock

Lot's of other people have experienced this problems as evident in googles forum. I'm new so I can't post the link here.
I recommend submitting a bug report in Whatsapp to influence them to make an effort to fix this as soon as possible. It's been 3 months already. To submit, in Whatsapp got to settings> Help> Contact us. Post a quick description of the problem, click next.
hello, since my nexus 5x is back from service with replacement motherboard, I upgraded to OREO 8.0 and then 8.1 both in stock and now with Twrp and magisk I have the following problem with whatsapp:
-listening to a voice message, away from face, the sound comes out of the speaker at low volume, bringing it closer to the face, the screen turns off properly but the sound always comes out of the speakerphone speaker at higher volume! never leaves the phone capsule !!
the proximity sensor works correctly.
some idea?
I already tried hard reset etc ..
I have the same problem, also motherboard replaced device.
I was looking for a solution and found this thread

Same problem here, only with WhatsApp. I would say the problem is related to Android Oreo, both 8.0.0 and 8.1.0, I have this problem since I updated my phone.
Same problem here but with Nexus 6P.
i don't think so... I really believe it might be related of Oreo update and something with the app itself... otherwise it would have happened in other apps too!
Same problema since I update to Oreo stock 8.1. ?
Same here. After updating to Oreo 8.1
Any Solution? ?
Now in telegram too

Downgrade from Android 8.1 to 8.0.
Search for: developers google factory images nexus
After this inactivate automactic system update on Developer options and keep 8.0 version until Google releases a version (perhaps 8.2 or 9) that fix this problem.
Hi,
I've problems with Bluetooth calls in my car since the first day with Pie stock rom.
When a call comes in or I want to make a call, I only hear a sound of distortion. The person on the other side can't here me in any way.
Normal calls are okay. I have made a clean install, got no error messages while installing and so on.
Can someone make Bluetooth calls with Pixel XL on Android Pie stock rom ?
I am having the same issue with Android Auto. It is like a very loud static noise. It doesn't happen all the time tho.
Ah yes, using Android auto here, too.
Hoping, that I am not alone with this problem.
Seems that Google fixed it with the September update.
Hi everybody,
I recently bought an used phone in Spain. The phone arrived with android 9 (I don't remember exactly which version) and I checked all the functions with the service menu. The only thing that worked badly was the secondary microphone, which had a recording volume extremely low. I thought it could be fine anyway. So I updated the phone OTA, then I did a companion restore (to 52.1.A.0.618). At that point I put the sim, and made the first whatsapp call. Everything was fine at the beginning but at the end of the call, the speaker started croaking (badly). From the service test I identified the bottom speaker (the one called right) as the malfunctioned one. So, thinking it was the fault of the update I downgraded to Android 9, following the guide on that forum, but it didn't work. Then I updated again with flashtool to Android 10, first with the Italian firmware (to 52.1.A.0.672), then with the Iberian firmware (to 52.1.A.0.618). But in both cases even the microphone no longer works correctly. If I record video, the microphone works fine, while if I make calls, the microphone works only if I put it on loud speaker. In the normal mode the interlocutor hears me but at a very low volume. Same problem from the service test. The microphone works, but only if I speak attached to the microphone hole. I tried to clean with a toothbrush, but problem still there. The phone has no cover.
Any one faced similar problems?
Fixed by replacing them. Now facing touch screen issue (updated to 52.1.A.0.672)
Hi,
I bought an XZ2 Compact recently and downloaded every updates. The last one is the 52.1.A.3.49 and I have the problem with the microphone : working for recordings or calls on loud speaker but not working for calls without the loud speaker.
What can I do ?

I have very similar problems with a used phone that I bought (secondary microphone very low volume). Am I reading you correctly, that you installed a new microphone and this fixed the issue?
