Major stuttering and slow down when downloading anything - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Questions & Answers

I noticed lately that my tablet will stutter or slowdown when downloading something, from Netflix, Google Play store, or just straight up a file from the browser. I'm not sure what's causing this. I'm using 52/64GB internal and I have a Samsung EVO 256GB card I've been using for a while now but is only 32GB filled. This happens whether it downloads to internal or external. I've tried restarting the tablets multiple times and it still happens the moment I initiate a download.
Has anyone experienced this or does anyone know what could be causing this?
Edit: So I've done a couple more things to troubleshoot. I uninstalled a bunch of games and freed up more space so I'm now at around 40/64GB used. I also removed the MicroSD card in case it was the cause of it. None of this changed it. I'm starting to think this may have started after the December patch, but I don't remember exactly when this issue started happening or when the patch was installed.

Same problem here. I got about 30gigs free internal with no sdcard. I assume ram plays a part which is y I wanna root and REALLY CLEAN my sm-t837v. But yeah your not alone in this

Have you run a speedtest? Try a few different servers as there are some in my city that have poor results and others have great speeds.

It happened on my home WiFi(at&t), my data(i got Verizon for the tablet), cousins WiFi(comcast). 3 different locations and services...Tho something else could cause the slowness and slight freezing I just think insufficient ram usage

I don't know what to say. I've streamed Amazon Video and AirTV from Europe to my home with no issues. I don't use Netflix. Memory on my S4 sits around 1.7G free though I have to admit I'm not always checking it.

This happened to me just yesterday when i started downloading a 2GB file. Everything would just start going slow. Going into recents menu was laggy. The whole system just lags

Oh no i mean streaming and what have you isn't a problem it's just WHEN I do download from Netflix it drastically slows and stutters. I rarely do so anyways. It's just an observation I made and decided to blame ram because I like to know and be able to DIRECTLY CHANGE AND AFFECT ram instead of using cruddy ram cleaners but instead I'm with the difficult version of the S4 soooooooo
Also apologies if it sounded like I'm complaining

Market doesn't display all downloaded items

Hi!
I'm referring to the "Downloads" tab in the Market app.
I've been noticing of late that it isn't listing the apps that I have been downloaded thus far. It displays one/two/three items that 've been downloaded (no specific time line, either). Furthermore, sometimes, it also tends to display an app which has already been removed.
It this normal? Has anyone observed something similar?
Would like to hear your opinions...
Can't say I've had it happen on my Desire. Off the top of my head, some questions that pop up:
- Are you running a custom ROM of any sort?
- Have you enabled any forced "install to SD Card" option (2.2 only)?
- Is it always the same apps that have this disappearing act, or different ones each time?
You could also try clearing the data of the Market app, see if that helps.
Thank you for your response, @Dragoon Knight.
- Nope. Running an unrooted FroYo (WWE ROM)
- Hmmm, well, I did perform a tweak using SDK: to install apps straight to SD card.
- It's different each time. I have a total of 9 apps - and all are installed on the SD unit.
Noticing this was purely by chance. I guess this was not the case - say a week ago?
Been two weeks since I purchased my device, btw. It is my first Android handset. Dunno if it helps, but it came with an Arab-region specific ROM. I "flashed" and installed a WWE ROM while performing a manual upgrade to FroYo.
As I said, I have been noticing this 'issue' (if it can be called so) over the past three-four days. Weird, nain?
It's connected to the app direct to sd fix I think!
Did It to mine earlier this week and now it keeps happening.
I did notice if I reboot the phone and not open the market for around 30 mins they seem to appear!
Hope that helps a bit!

@The_real_dj
"It's connected to the app direct to sd fix I think!" - can you please elaborate?
@AndroHero
Didn't work.
EDIT:
Guess what? I have this habit of charging the mobile after turning it off. I turn it on, voila! All apps are listed.
But after a few hrs... Again - back to randomly listed apps.
Not that it bothers me all that much (but yes, it does keep poking me now and then)... Just that I am hoping all this is NOT a sign of things to come. :/ :?
I've had this issue for a couple of months now. The apps in the Market's "Downloaded" section come and go. Sometimes they're all there, sometimes just a few of them. Clearing the Market's cache and/or data don't seem to help much. A bit annoying, but I can live with it
Ah, so I'm not alone.
Of course, am sure we can live with it. But it is a pesky annoyance. :/
Glad that someone else has noticed this. 'Cos, serious or not, I haven't seen this "issue" addressed.
Thank you for adding to the conversation, @MapleDouglas.
Got the same problem too. Just randomly comes and goes. At least I haven't noticed a pattern yet.
At one point it was getting annoying as it lasted a couple of days.
The Market issue addressed here applies frequently to apps that have been shifted to the SD card. Is this the case with your phones as well?
You can try the AppBrain app - this app can cope with apps on the SD card as well.
I had mine do this too yesterday and I have the setInstallLocation2 mod..

- Ah! I never quite observed that. Well, for now, only one app is missing from the list and it has been moved to the SD card. In fact, the other apps that are being displayed were either moved or force-installed to the SD card.
What's the App you're talking about? How will it help?

Tried resetting the "force-install-to-SD" tweak: pm setInstallLocation 0
No use.

[Q] music stutter

I am having a music stutter issue. I have read lots of related threads, but haven't been able to find too many (any except this one about sdcard problems: can't post link because I'm teh nub sauce, but the title is "Lingering EVO issues (SD Card, Camera, etc.)") that talk about the problem on the EVO. I am thinking it might not actually be a bug and could just be the fact that I have a crappy SD card (the one that came with the phone). I ran SD card speed test and got
10 MB/sec read
2 MB/sec write
which fits with the fact that it is a class 2 card. I do not get music skips that often, but get them particularly badly when I am downloading on 4g (which I do a lot using subsonic). I also think it could be because of a slow SD card because I have had problems with 720p video getting corrupted which apparently is a common symptom of slow SD cards. I do have 7 full homesceens with about 5 widgets. When music is skipping the whole phone is going laggy and slow, so maybe its processor speed? IDK. Has anyone else had this problem on an EVO?
Please halp.
Running newest FRESH rom, but it happenned on stock as well (actually one of the reasons I rooted).
Try upping the cache size to unlimited on subsonic. That did the trick for me.
If you ever want to delete music, just manually delete the subsonic folder using Astro or what have you.
But what about the fact that sometimes the normal music player will skip, again especially when I am using 4g? Is it possible that 4g is downloading so fast that my SD card is not capable of reading/playing 320 kbps mp3s and downloading on 4g at the same time? 4g speeds are about 2mbps (.25 MBps) and my write speeds are 2MBps (16mbps) so this doesn't seem like it could be the case, but maybe reading/writing at the same time significantly slows things down? I dunno.
Did you ever get stutters in the normal music player? Did it skip A LOT when you had a 4g connection?
I live in an area with no 4G coverage, so I doubt that's it. When I read your title, my first thought was "I bet he has subsonic installed".
I haven't read anything online about this, but I also came across this stuttering problem. It pissed me off to no end. What I ultimately noticed was that all the "stuttering" music was at some point downloaded via Subsonic (even if it is played with a different media player - Cubed in my case). At first I thought it was something to do with the data connection, but then I became suspicious of the cache size.
I suspect that Subsonic downloads the tracks as long as the cache is not full, but then if it becomes full halfway through downloading a track, it corrupts the mp3 with a skip (perhaps while it deletes another track in the cache).
Regardless, increasing the cache to unlimited is what fixed it for me. Give it a shot.
Btw: Using CM6, for what it's worth.
I found that this was happening on the latest ota, so i downgraded and everything is working normally. There seem to be a couple of music problems with 3.29-although people aren't complaining that much.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'll give it a try. I don't think it is a problem with the file itself, however, because I can play a song after everything is done downloading and it will work fine even if it was skipping before. It could be that between reading a 320kbps mp3, writing a new mp3 at 4g speeds, and deleting an old mp3 that the SD card is not fast enough?
I'll give it a try and get back to you.
So I did a couple things (stupidly at the same time).
First, I used the SD card from an old Evo (screen cracked, thank god for phone insurance) and reloaded everything on there. I think this is what actually fixed my problem. Read and write speeds should be the same as it is the exact same model of SD card, but I think it had the effect of defragmenting the card, enabling better reading and writing.
At the same time I tried Tickitata's idea and increased the cache size to unlimited. I streamed an album over WiFi and everything was fine (which it usually isn't). But then I noticed that I only had 2.6 GB of music on there and my cache limit had been 5 GB before, so I didn't think this was the problem and I changed it back. It still worked just as well afterward.
BTW Tickitata, were you having chronic stuttering problems that made the music almost unlistenable, or was it just a time to time thing?
In reply to sw99: I am using 3.3.0.1 not 3.29
I have someone on another forum that is buying a class 6 card to see if it resolves the problem for him. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Yeah, it was awful. Definitely to the point of being unlistenable.
Well, glad to hear you got it worked out.
Music occassionally stutters for me too. I use Mixzing and the 10 band EQ it comes with so I just assumed that the processor was getting bogged down with too many apps running while music was playing. Never really figured out the true cause.

Galaxy note root

I have a problem I rooted my phone the day i got it but some apps are saying i do not have enough memory I have 8gb free not all apps just some like gl to sd and Google mapes won't update ever both saying not enough memory
Has anyone got any ideas how to stop this from happening
Thanks
I've looked into it a bit more seems to be game's load fine but all others do not load don't know if this helps at all

[Q] Anyone know why my data/data folder keeps freaking out?

Was getting low storage error and moved a bunch of apps to sd card and my data/data folder showed I had like 80mb free and error went away. Couple days later error came back without adding any new apps and I was under 15mb free, figured this was weird and restarted my phone and it went back to 78mb free.
So what could cause this? Is something not clearing out right here on its own? Btw I am on a stock deodexed rom.
if you don;t install the EXT4 fix, the stock configuration is for the Data partition to be a paltry 149 mb. That can get filled up pretty quickly-mostly by apps like the messaging app, Google Maps and anything else that needs to stored data in this "high performance/secure" location. i put it in quotes because it;s the "official reason" for doing this but I think it;s crap. in reality it;s a design flaw by HTC that never got fixed. also, files from the Playstore get cached to this partion which is why the free space available can jump up and down. there is only so much moving apps to SD Card will fix. the problem is certain apps accumulate data over time.
If you do install it you will have 749 mb available. if you have a rooted Dinc, I think there is no reason not to install it. then again I am not certain if your ROM is compatible. I hear that Touch of Blue has this fix integrated into it if you want to stay on Gingerbread.
this thread probably has all the info you need
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488351
Thnaks man but it's not that, something is just "wrong" with it lol.
It will say I have close to 80mb free and just a few hours later be full. I noticed If I go into Titanium Backup and do some stuff (like removing orphan data) or something it seems to fix it and the low on storage space error goes away and frees up like 60-70mb instantly. This never used to be like this.
Wonder if it's just a sign of an aging cpu or phone not calculating how much free space is there properly.
did you install the fix? if you did not, then do it. the Dinc is a very well known device. Us users have beaten this device to death over the last 3 years. there is not too much new going on. it could be possible that your device is failing and if it is, get a new one.
before I rooted my Dinc, it was a daily struggle for me to keep this partition from filling up. for me the combo of data being consumed by Amazon App store, Google Play store and mostly my email client with 4 email accounts. 149 mb is just too small.

OOS12 Do Not Disturb Broken? Need to have 10 gigs storage free for accounts sync?

Hi everyone. Been on OOS12 for about 2 months now. Currently on c33 build. While I'm generally pleased, there are a few bugs that are bringing me down.
1) Do not disturb. I can toggle it and it shows. I've gone through the setting a hundred times. No matter what I do, when enabled, I still get audio alerts as well as vibration just like if it's off.
I did not do a factory reset when coming from OOS11. I really don't want the hassle of doing that only to find out that the bug is still there. Anyone comment on this?
2) Requirement of 10 gigs of storage to be free for 'accounts' to sync. Admittedly, I am a data boarder. That said, I usually have ~4 gigs of free space left on my phone at any given moment. When I upgraded to OOS12, I soon realized that accounts I have, like Google, or Samsung for my watch 4, weren't syncing. So, Gmail's won't come through, calendar wouldn't sync. Frustrated, I searched for answers and in the OnePlus forums, I found someone with the issue with a claim that you need at least 10 gigs of storage space free for sync to work. After painstakingly deleting music and other media, I eventually freed up some space. As soon as I had over 10 gigs of storage space free, Gmail's began to pour in again. I'd really like to use that 10 gigs of space that I'm unable to use anymore. Anyone else?
You should have a minimum of 20gb free space on internal memory. That's one reason why I always use a device with expandable storage.
I don't know, stuff some stuff in the cloud or a OTG flashstick...

Fair. If only OnePlus would sell me a phone with more than 256 gigs...sigh.
Agree on phones with external memory. I'm eyeing the Sony Xperia 5 IV for this very reason.

256gb isn't bad, I run about 90gb on internal and 453gb on the SD card currently. Only apps, the DCIM and download folders go on internal. My one N10+ has 500gb internal but try loading 400gb when you reload, takes forever. A lot easier to slam in a loaded SD card and use it to load all the apps from instead of Playstore. All contacts too and any apps that have backup support like Poweramp. The database is already loaded on the card. Makes setup a lot easier.
Get the Note 10+ if you don't mind no 5G or a variable refresh rate trade off for one of the best displays there is, even today. I don't like any of the new Samsung's but they got it near perfect with the N10+. It's a beast that runs like a bat out of hell... forget that's it's 3 years old. It rocks.
One can be had at a good price now too.

I'm so upset by it that I didn't even try to see if it was fixed on c.35. This is now how I manage my expectations with OnePlus.
Out of curiosity, is your c.35 a clean flash from a wipe/reset or a gradual upgrade like me?

It's a gradual upgrade like yours
(but with the full 4gb file, as it's rooted and ota differential upgrades do not work)
