Touch panel responsiveness - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Hello,
I'm using my Pixel 3 XL for almost 3 months and I facing one thing that is super annoying. Everytime when I'm playing games I'm covering the side of the screen around the notch (just a bit with the palm) and touch panel becoming less responsiveness than normally. Is it normal thing? Does everyone facing the same thing?

[Q] M8 Touchscreen Latency

Hi Guys,
Recently reverted back to Android from iOS. I have had low end and mid range Android devices for development purposes as well as a Windows Phone devices all the way through.
Since taking up the HTC M8 as my day to day device, I have been noticing issues (teeth grindingly frustrating issues) regarding touch screen accuracy and responsiveness.
A prime example of this is when using a browser (Any browser, on both GPE and Sense editions). When making a pinch to zoom gestures, my fingers can move almost half an inch apart before the actual zoom process begins. I have tested this on a Samsung GS4 and found this not to be the case on that device. I believe the root cause of this problem is also behind the poor accuracy when typing on *any* keyboard (i find myself re-writing words again and again despite the larger screen size, you'd expect larger on screen keys would equal less frequent miss stokes...). Again this is not the case on the GS4.
I have used a multitouch testing tool to gauge some measure of response time and touch latency. I have found when moving points at any rate of velocity they begin to lag quite substantially behind my finger. I don't know if this is part of the same problem.
I am wondering if anyone could shed light on whether this is an issue with display touch sensitivity settings, something which could be changed at the kernel level or a limitation with the hardware itself,
Is it also possible that the same algorithm used to detect and handle touch for devices with smaller screen real estate is still being used and that the distances and tolerances for touch and gesture recognition are acting proportionally to the screen size.
Hopefully this is something we can fix, it makes the device tiresome to type with and feel clunky and unresponsive.
The screen on this phone has a higher touch response then the iPhone

Go in a store and check out another phone. If yours turns out to be defective (which should be the case), you should get it replaced

No issues with mine.it's better than iPhone5s I had. Which had some issues sensing touch on corners of display

If you have just moved from the iPhone, then this is a slight orientation problem ... and actually the M8 is the nearest you can get in terms of responsiveness to an iPhone, thanks to the fastest screen response time on the market ... for keyboard, you need to deliberately slow your finger speed down for few days and then you get used to it ... Screen/phone size also play a part in your typing because your mind can remember sub-consciously how much finger movement to do for typing ..
All the above is assuming you were an avid typist for long time on an iPhone

Thanks for all the replies, it is likely that its a transitional issue alright. But before i write it off as such, can anyone verify the issues regarding pinch to zoom? Just trying to figure out if it is a faulty device i have on my hands or not
I get the exactly the same issues. I really thought it was me .
However I had the HTC One M7 and had no issue whatsoever.
LG G2 also same no issues .But since getting
HTC One M8, the touch accuracy is well absolutely useless. I am forever correcting what I type.
I don't think its the hardware but something to do with the Algorithm..No matter what keyboard you use or calibration you do. doesn't make any difference
I am hoping that lollipop cures this problem..
My touch accuracy has always been great. I'd say that if yours isn't it's a hardware problem.

I tried the m8 and iphone 6 instore and compared them. The m8 screen is very sensitive, requiring minimal touch to be activated. This may be why tests are showing that the m8 has a faster touch response. However, when dragging your finger along the screen, such as swiping launcher screens, the iphone is more responsive.
I then tested "show touches" on the m8, the touch lags behind my finger.

Touchscreen Problems

When I have my Verizon Pixel (totally stock, never tweaked it) in landscape and have the front camera on the right side everything works normal but in some apps when the front camera is on the left the touch seems to be off a bit, seems shifted to the side. The other thing I've noticed is when typing in Reddit there is a serious lag between what I type in and when it shows up in the text box.
I've done mobile comparisons of the XL vs the LG V20 and the V20 doesn't have these things happen in the same situations.
Has anyone else noticed this?

screen touch responsiveness

Is the screen responsive when touch scrolling?
I heard and have seen videos of the p20 pro and honor view 10 where the scroll is delayed, by usually 4mm from the moment the screen is touched.
could you kindly install multitouch tester and see whether it is responsive when drawing small circles inside the apps circle?
in the case of the huawei and honor phones it seems to be a software issue as the cursor is registered fine ( as seen seen displaying cursor under dev options ).
but still it is felt as an issue by several users as was wondering how op5t is in comparison.
many thanks!
these phones have nearly same system responsiveness.
50% is determined by the screen they use, so 5t doesn't as good as the iphone x and galaxy s8 or s9. but another 50 % is determined by the software. using oxygen os is more laggy than the custom os such as linage and phenix os .

Sudden washed out colors

Hi everyone. I had a really strange issue hit me today. All was going great these few months but suddenly today my screen seems washed out. Blacks don't seem to be black but light greyish. And playing YouTube videos such as the one attached look terrible like it is a heavily compressed JPEG with terrible color clipping. It used to play perfectly before this. You can see the color clipping around where the dark area meets some light in the 2nd image (sample.jpg).
Strangely enough, taking a screenshot, it is really how the video should look (Screenshot_20190721-230137-01.jpeg).
Just wondering if anyone had this issue before? Not sure if it was a recent software update. I'm still on December update on my end so perhaps it's one of the apps.
A reboot also did not seem to resolve the issue.
Thanks in advance everyone

December? Update your phone first, preferably with a full image if you are unlocked. If that doesn't work, backup your data and do a FDR to rule out a hardware issue. If you end up calling Google for support this will be step number one, so you may as well get it over with. If you are not unlocked already, now would be a good time to do it. Unlocking will wipe the phone for you.
Update your phone buddy.
Just updated to the July update and it's still the same. The video looks terrible on my phone when compared to a Poco F1. Any chance I could trouble you guys to see if you are noticing the same banding/washed out colors on your phones as well?
Played some other videos and the same problem also occurs, especially when there's contrasty scenes. It's as though, my screen bit depth went down a little and it looks a bit like a heavily compressed JPEG when contrasty or backlit scenes appear
I looked at the same video in your OP and it looked fine. I am on Q beta 5.

Thanks fury683! I'm guessing it's probably a hardware issue of sorts. Even some of the default wallpapers are showing banding at times
Same issues are showing up on wallpapers and images as well. Those areas where there are transitions seem to be smudging and all like a low color depth display. Moved on to Q Beta 5 and the problem still remains. The issue seems to be how the screen handles dark/dim transitions.
Just wondering if anyone has any idea how to reset the screen parameters/calibration etc?

Any luck? I started facing this problem on Pixel 3a since a few days
Facing the exact same issue on my Pixel 3 XL. Were you able to find a solution?
Check your color choices under display settings. Try Boosted if it's not already selected. Maybe you had it on Boosted, and somehow it went back to Natural?
Same problem here...
I've noticed that same issue on my 3xl. Looks really bad, both wallpaper and YouTube blocky and compressed.
I have faced the same issue on my pixel 3xl recently. Have contacted the google support. They don't seem to acknowledge that it's an issue that's been occurring frequently. Instead they tell me it's just for my phone. Can anyone bring it to notice of the concerned authorities. I wish this is an issue which has been since pixel 2xl. And they refuse to cover it since the phone is out of warranty
What did you provide them as evidence? Ive sent a few YouTube screenshots and my wallpaper on home screen as it has bad banding at the top. All darks are horribly blocky no matter what quality I have YouTube at
I have sent them pictures of night sky i have taken and other such pictures in instagram where the contrast is very much evident. I have given my phone to the repair service and they said its a case of display mura. But i cant imagine such issues in a phone within an year and half of purchase.
4 days ago, after 2 years using pixel 3 xl I have the same issue. My screen is washed out. I don't have black any more. It is unacceptable buy a phone that costed more then U$ 700 and after 2 years I have to replace it because of screen issue. My battery is perfect, my phone never dropped and everything is working except the screen. I will give up to buy Google's phones. The only one I never had problem was nexus 5, all rhe others nexus 6p, pixel xl and now pixel 3 xl I had basic problems that if I have bought a Samsung or other famous brand will never have it. It is really a shame!
I am having this issue too ! Crazy Google Pixel. No point of buying after discontinuing google photo unlimited storage. Another disappointing issue after buzzing sound for front camera.
Left: Pixel 3 XL, blocky night sky.
RIght: Pixel 2 XL, everything looks normal.
Hi. This is also happening to me.
I'm on a P3 XL.
I believe that detailing what you were doing when you noticed the change may help discover how this is happening.
For starters, this happened to me some time ago and it suddenly fixed itself. Granted, I had the washed screen for months probably and I can't recall how it solved itself, or maybe I solved it by doing something accidentally.
Anyway, this happened again today and now I'm back with the washed screen.
I was watching a YouTube video in full screen with the volume very high, phone was hooked to charger. After a while I quit the application and realized that my screen's colours were messed up again.
It's as if there's a white matte all over the screen affecting the overall accuracy of the colors. the screen's colours get worse the less brightness there is. And when playing videos, especially on YouTube, the darkest areas appear blocky as if the video used a very low compression rate. This blockiness effect is dissipated if I manually increase the screen brigthness, but this is not a practical solution because the colors are still wrong.
My device is rooted with Magisk.
Latest Android security update June 2021.
I use YouTube Vance in root mode, instead of vanilla YouTube.
I am facing the same issue on my pixel 3 XL. Does anyone know hoe to fix this. I have two Pixel 3 XL. The one showing this color distortion has a bit brighter or I can say more white screw than the other. One is working fine till now. I updated to S beta 5 and this happened both are running same version of software and same settings.
Hi thr, new to pixel lineup. Got mine in a very cheap rate in marketplace like 200 usd. But now i can see the same issue. Also my top speaker is distorted in music playback like its broken or something. And most annoyingly a portion of the left side screen has low sensitivity where it misses the touches and scrolls. Which is very disturbing for typing experience. Please dont tell me to reset, coz i did it during the purchase. I am in the middle of a project and i dont have money for a new device, please help.

Question Pixel 6 Pro Palm Rejection

Hello everyone,
I was wondering is there a way in increase the sensitivity on the edges of the screen or disable the palm rejection feature with APK on the pixel 6 pro?
I'm having a difficult time hitting certain ticks or cues on the edges of the screen when using certain apps. I've found myself having to purposefully aim slightly to the left or right depending on which side of the screen I am on.
Thanks for any input!
Hi esoplayer,
What kind of navigation do you use on your phone? Gestures, or the navigation bar. I was wondering if it was the gesture navigation that was getting in the way, possibly. I use gestures too, now, but I stuck with the navigation bar before I got my P6P.
Hey RoirraW,
I started with the gestures, but I found myself having to reach too far sometimes with my thumb in one handed use, or I would be swiping in a photo app and cause the back function to trigger.
I am currently using the navigation bar because of that, and it's also what I'm used to using coming from using the galaxy line of phones.
I thought that would clear it up too, but it's still giving me some troubles when trying to interact close to the fold of the edge screen.

I see, well that's one possibility eliminated. For what it's worth, using my P6P in an OtterBox Defender case, I assumed my occasional trouble at the sides of the screen (but not that often) was because of the curve combined with the edge of the case, but maybe not.
Yeah I have the same issue and my case is not the culprit for sure, the screen edge does not respond to clicks even most times scrolling can be very frustrating if your trying to scroll to a very specific spot, very often I have to click or press that part of the screen 3-4 times before it registers

There is a bug that has been appearing since Feb with the Pixel 6 Pro. I experienced it a few months ago when re-flashing stock (it's an AOSP bug that has also appeared in custom ROMs).
This bug makes an invisible border around all edges (about 1 inch). When you long press on say the outer edges of Gboard (say numbers 1 and 0, q and p), do you experience issues?
Palm rejection has never been great on Pixels. It's decent, but it's not great. It's an old problem of Android (even though Samsung has it worked out mostly), plus Windows laptops also struggle with that. Only products I've seen yet with decent palm rejection are IPads.
Hmmm, perhaps this is a hit or miss issue amongst different apps as I rarely experience this problem. IIRC, I think I have experienced it in the Outlook app and haven't noticed it in any other applications. Weird...
