Okay, im losing my mind with this problem. Watching videos on new S9 (Pie) on netflix is so dark i barely can see anything happening around. I have changed adaptive display, video enhancer but they do little or not anything at all. While Netflix is dark af Youtube on the other hand works perfectly fine regular and HDR content and yes, i have the 'best' netflix plan.
Comparison against ip8+: https://i.imgur.com/TNhg6WQ.jpg
Using search bar i can see what is happening but during playback no: https://i.imgur.com/azR7fGa.jpg
Any ideas? Has this been this bad whole year?

I have not but i tried subscribing into beta version and it did not solve this. Is there easy way to do that or should i just download some random apk from somewhere?
Okay found it from apkmirror, will try now.
Tested on three different version. One from mid december and one from november. Third one was so old (from march) that it directly said i need to update my Netflix app in order to proceed.
No luck with these, same problem persists.

I saw the same thing but that feels like generic notification or old. Could have been there for months.
I try to contact the chat support if i get anything out of there and post the info back here. I use netflix daily (talk about addiction) and i cant live with this issue
Okay, problem was my settings or viewing habits after all. I had to disable adaptive brightness and pump the brightness quite high which makes using the phone before sleep in bed quite horrible experience but when doing that the issue goes away most of the time. I need to check if changing colors to more yellow tint helps to overcome this new issue i just generated. Maybe i'm to used to use IPS/LCD displays which are bright but not like flashlight into eyes like HDR/Amoled.
In your display settings you have to turn in your AOMLED to Cinema mode when watching movies on Netflix and turn the contrast on high. Best results I've found this far.
Turn on video enhancer under advanced features. It works! I have a Note 9.
Temporary Fix
I was able to view content again that was not too dark to watch by uninstalling latest Netflix app and then installing v4.12.2 from apkmirror.
Netflix 4.12.2 from ApkMirror
Thanks jsomby and iskidoo2. So glad to know I'm not alone. I spent hours faffing around in my S9 settings (blue light filter, brightness, adaptive brightness, screen modes, etc, and Netflix subtitles on or off) and no combination of settings made a meaningful difference
I called Netflix support from the app yesterday and today about this.
Yesterday the agent was very nice but got stuck into the advice for "screen is black but I hear sound" which wasn't really the correct category.
After that call and learning from this thread about how to get older versions of apps, I tried two Netflix 6 versions which made no difference (current Play Store version is 7.26.1). Then I spotted iskidoo2's suggestion of 4.12.2. It worked! Thank you for giving me Netflix back!
I then took some pictures comparing the ancient Netflix app with the current one, even demonstrating the way the inset preview image is much less dim than the film itself when you're moving the red dot on the progress bar....
I called Netflix again today to be told it's a known issue with the S9 and streaming HDR titles, and they're working on it. Since this thread is over 6 months old I'm not sure if they're working on it exceedingly slowly, or if it was never properly acknowledged as a bug until recently?!
TLDR: thank you for this thread. I registered here to say that.

I didn't try the old version yet and some series are hard to impossible to watch in dim light (ie. bed) but i will look into that older apk. I also spoke with netflix support and 'solution' was to pump up the brightness but in bed that usually makes eyes hurt, otherwise no issues. There are couple of series in netflix that are pure agony to watch with this phone, one of these are 'The Ranch'. Colors are off and since are scenes are quite low contrast it makes watching really bad with S9.
Also there is this issue with blacks and how they leave trail when moving fast but that's for another topic and hw issue and not related no netflix only.
Here's the current app compared to the old one. I've not had to mess with any of my settings or adaptive brightness... the old one just works. Such a relief to suddenly see faces again rather than just lightbulbs surrounded by blackness.

THANKS!! Finaly I have Netflix back...by using Netflix 4.12.2 from ApkMirror
I had the same issue with samsung note 10+. The screen went dark. Then I installed netflix 4.12.2 from apkmirror. The brigtness came back. Then update the app back to latest version from playstore. The latest version started working fine with proper brightness.
Ok guys. Netflix is incompetent. Here is a fix until the retards get it fixed. It's an HDR streaming problem. Brightness controls and what not seem to have little effect. Start a Netflix show that has this problem them picture in picture your netflix. While inpic in pic go to display settings and turn adaptive display on then turn brightness to high. Your netflix should be better now but still not how it should be in HDR. For some reason Netflix HDR is using adaptive brightness settings automatically and screwing things up
I had a similar problem with Netflix playback on the Android app being very dark and discovered that there is a brightness control in Netflix. When you are playing back a movie tap the screen to bring up the play/pause controls and on the left side is a brightness slider. This fixed the problem for me.

As title says, YouTube doesn't have any HDR option (also, how can we get 2160p YouTube playback) and neither does Netflix?
Tablet should support it right? Hopefully you guys will know more.
Edit: tried YouTube Vance and it still didn't have 2160p or HRD. iYTBP settings, only Force VP9 is listed?

Netflix says that HDR is supported on S3 and S4 according to the Android FAQ:
https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23939
As for 2160p (which is also known as 4K/UHD), this screen does not have such high resolution. It's a 1600p screen, which is a taller version of 1440p, which is also known as Quad HD. Netflix will do either 1080p or 2160p, so you should be getting 1080p on a 1600p screen at best, but the image will be stretched to fill the screen.
Youtube sadly doesn't play HDR, Netflix does show HDR badge but it doesn't actually play in HDR and it maxes out at 720p.

How do you know that? Neflix shows the badge and I was thinking it plays in HDR.
Youtube is a no go for now. So is Amazon Prime. I think it's just too new device.
Played "Test patterns" to determine resolution, as to HDR I've visually compared the same frame between HDR TV and tablet and there is clearly more detail visible on TV.
I completely agree. Youtube does support HDR on my galaxy s9+ but doesnt on the tab s4, which is crazy to me since though I think people do consume a lot of media on their phones HDR really comes into play when watching movies and shows which is being done on tablets much more then phones. Also the Netflix thing, I can't say I can see if HDR is on or off since compared to my tv it will always look worse, but the 720p thing is unacceptable and ruins the experience.
I just got the tab S3 and found out i cant watch youtube HDR lol. I create HDR gaming videos and check them with my s8 phone and wanted to do that with the tab because of bigger screen but it seems the s3 and s4 are both a piece of junk lol. Putting an HDR screen in it, advertise with it but lock it out for most apps. Even Netflix doesnt trigger hdr, yes it shows the logo but its not shown as HDR, doesnt trigger at all.

What a disapointment this discovery was.
Youtube looks aweful on Tab S4 compared to Galaxy S9.
I also tried NetFlix HDR series, but here it was the other way around. Looks really bad on S9, like there is less color gradients to choose from compared on Tab S4.
Watching the candle-light sequence the first minute of Outlaw King-series ep 1, you can clearly see the diffrent shades of colors around the light. But on the Tab S4 there is a smooth no boarder color shift around the light.
Look at this picture I took of my phone and tablet at the same moment in the scene.

I spoke with Netflix - they don't give a thing about you as a customer. I rightout cancelled the UHD Subscription because of the way netflix so called customer service (it is a bad, bad joke) is treating me as a customer and building walls to make it as hard as they can for you to get anything through to them. You can only call or chat, no email . this is ridicolous.
Well, anyway, test patterns are showing that it is maxing out at 720 on this screen, which has 4 times the pixels 720 is showing. Using an older client version (prior 5.3.1), you get at least 1080. Netflix does not care about this and tells you to 'tune your internet connection'. Sure, my 500/200 Fiber connection. With ipad and older client versions playing 1080 at the same time, if needed, but the current client not playing 1080. And then they just stop there. No, this is all we can do. Wenn, you didn't do a thing besides taking my money avery month.
So, no more netflix. Sorry for OT.

We have 1600p screen. I obtain 1440p60fps on YouTube. On Netflix I can see material marked as HDR eg 13 reasons why.
All true
Netflix is shameful, so sad.
HDR series are ok, but with 720p
All non HDR is limited in bandwith and looks poor. I have the old 1080p version and i use that version for non HDR and current for HDR....seems a fair compromise.
Comparing some scenes of hannibal, day and night.
Do as I do is my recommendation
---------- Post added at 10:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 PM ----------
On amazon is tricky, the app is so strange.
All works ok 1080p and hdr works when you can find it.
I am not sure how to kick hdr content or even find it.
You can find the same series with hd without and with hdr... is weird
But it is supported and looks great, for example the grand tour
Youtube HDR videos do look like they are playing in HDR.
My Note 8 shows options in the resolution playback that include "HDR", but the S4 does not.
I'm going to guess this is an android 8.1 bug or feature.. as both the Note 8 and the S4 have the same version of Youtube.
I wanna thank you for discussing this here because i was minutes away from purchasing from south korea the 6gb ram version for 850 euro. I was so dissapointed with this discovery. Such a shame for a tablet coming from samsung and so powerful with an amoled screen not to be utilized to be used to its fullest potentials. Ipad or google surface supports full hdr netflix/ youtube??
Hi folks, I sadly see this is still a thing.
I was gifted a TabS4 for Christmas and although the screen is stunning, the lack of HDR playback is frustrating.
YouTube, Prime, Netflix.....what gives?
On YouTube I can play any HDR video on my Galaxy S9+ and it players perfectly 1440p HDR. Using YouTube Vanced it will even state it's outputting 2160p HDR (I know that's beyond the screen resolution)
Run them exact same videos & I get the same Res but zero HDR.
Anyone had any contact with any of these providers or Samsung?
I've just tweeted them all now, I'll report back if I hear anything because this is not acceptable. Ill happily get this tab replaced with something that works.....though I'll miss the screen!

Yes plays 1440p fine on YouTube, plays 2160p fine too on Vanced.
Have any of you guys tried comparing the HDR of the Tab S4 with another device?
I downloaded a video demo and put the Tab S4 next to an S8 and it was disappointing how much better the S8 looks.
The Tab S4 doesn't even look like HDR, it just looks like SDR with a wider color gamut and the brightness blown up.
Besides I found the same vid on YouTube and I compared it to the local file I downloaded, and both look the same, which is odd because supposedly YouTube doesn't support HDR on the Tab S4.
And the local file is definitely playing on HDR because I get the label on the top left corner when using the Samsung Player.

What label are you seeing?
I have both HDR10 and Dolby Vision files and I see no label indicating HDR in the Samsung player.
I know the content is HDR by checking with mediainfo, but I do not see how to tell if anything is actually playing in HDR.

This one (I can't post direct links due to the 10 message limit):
i66.tinypic.com/qodphu.jpg
You can find the raw video over at 4K media dot org, click "Samsung UHD Demos" on the right pane, video is called "Samsung x RedBull: See the Unexpected HDR".
You'll find the video on YouTube as: "Real 4K HDR 60fps: See the Unexpected from Samsung and RedBull in HDR", the channel is called "The HDR Channel".
I also subscribed to the Netflix HDR plan and I'm not seeing any significant difference. I'm pretty convinced this tablet can't do true HDR.
So I'm not surprised YouTube didn't even bother making the app for the device HDR-ready, they probably know it's fake-HDR, just like the Tab S3.

Thanks for the reply. User error on my part.
I used the "My Files" app to select the video and direct launch "Video Player" (purple icon). No HDR. By chance I ended up going to Galaxy App store, and found "Samsung Video Player" listed as not installed. I installed it, launched it, and sure enough I now get the "[HDR]" tag on the title.
I compared playback in HDR to VLC, and I could tell the Samsung Video Player looked different/better. Primarily in terms of brightness. I think the colors looked a bit more vivid, but I cannot eliminate the possibility of the "louder sounds better" phenomenom here.

When I'm watching any HDR10 content in landscape on the YouTube app, the display brightness goes haywire and continually goes all the way up and down by itself. It only acts like this when viewing full screen. It does this on both vanced YouTube and the regular app but not when playing directly through the YouTube website. I turned auto brightness off and it still does this. Does anyone else experience the same problem? I own the L29 btw

it's my understanding that playing back hdr video content should kick the display into high brightness mode to achieve the proper effect. I'm not sure this is happening on my 6 pro. I have various shows and movies that I use to test hdr playback and know very well what they should look like. on the 6 pro they all play back way too dark. tried using plex and mx player, both of which usually support hdr playback. however when viewing hdr content on youtube, for example the channel 'mostly walking', footage looks the correct brightness. the phone also gets a bit warmer, leading me to believe it's behaving correctly.
so so far, I don't think it's working properly for movie local content in hdr. because of this I'm thinking of rooting to allow me to force into high brightness mode for video playback.
interested to hear other experiences.

Yes I'm having the same issue, I was trying to play some HDR content on MX Player Pro, and video looked very dark, then I copied that file to iPhone 13 Pro Max and played in infuse and it looked way better and brighter, then I felt something is wrong with my Pixel 6 Pro, so I downloaded VLC and video was still dark, then I played that video in Google Photos and it was same.
also there was an instant when I was playing HDR video on Youtube and HBM was not kicking in, but that got solved by restarting my phone.
Are you on December update or November? I'm on December update, I suspect that is the issue.

No. "Just" playing HDR content does not trigger the HBM. HBM gets triggered by high ambient lighting, and that's about the only trigger of importance. Get a flashlight and shine it next to the ambient sensor, you will notice the increase in brightness. Google does not give you a handy tool/way to manually force HBM, except you are willing to root.
Is that meant to happen on Google Photos or do you need an external app to auto brightness for HDR content? I'm not sure if HDR is broken as on Vanced HDR doesn't work either but is fine in stock YouTube app.
I ended up rooting to get high brightness mode control, amongst other things. all the usual video playback apps are definitely not kicking in to high brightness mode because when the brightness is on full during playback of an hdr video and I activate HBM, you see it notch up in brightness. it's better, probably just about ok now, but i've definitely had better phones for this. it's a combination of total nits and the tuning of the screens gamma. the s20 plus I had was stunning for hdr. some content you even had to turn it down. there's an image file you can use called something like nearlydark.jpg with numbers on it of decreasing brightness. it's a good ruler for seeing how well any given screen is going to perform in this area.
Hi all, I've had my Pixel 6 Pro since December and there's been one issue that preventing me from loving it. Nearly every 3rd party app (and some Google apps) has this stutter when scrolling. Just to be clear this is not the bug where it drops from 120hz to 60hz. It is very clearly running at 120 the entire time but there is some sort of dropped frames or screen tearing going on that makes it stutter. A lot of people can relate to this stuttering to how the Twitter and Reddit apps behave on Android. Except this is happening to so many apps I use which are not present when I compare it to someone's S21 Ultra. Apps such as play store, yelp, linkedin, google feed on the left of homescreen, google feed in chrome, netflix, uber eats, google news, and youtube all have this issue. There are apps that run like butter however such as settings, contacts, calendar, and keep so I know its possible. Does anyone else experience this? I have tried the December, January, February, and 12L beta 3 and there are not improvements. I just don't understand how so many people say this phone is butter when this stuttering is so jarring.

This is 100% not the norm. I've had two 6 Pro's (just got a replacement because of a weird haptic motor) and both have been fine. So, it sounds like either an app is causing this, or its a hardware issue. I recommend re-flashing 12L (after a wipe), and during setup, create a temporary gmail account (you can delete it later). install the worst 3 or 4 apps and see if it fixes it. It's the best way to troubleshoot your issue.
Or try ProtonAOSP with a temporary Google Account (just for a few hours). You need to get to the bottom of what's causing this. But you absolutely should NOT have to use a "ROM" to get a proper experience. We're just trying to troubleshoot here.
How many apps do you have listed in Settings -- Accessibility? can you disable all of them, restart and see if there is any change>?

I've reflashed 12L and tried ProtonAOSP but the stuttering is still there. This was with fresh install with no additional apps other than what came out of the box. Can you confirm that both your google feed and google news apps scroll perfectly smooth? This should be consistent across all Pixel 6s since it is a stock app.
I've had this issue since day 1.
Google feed stutters pretty badly, is probably the biggest offender on my end that stutters the most.

Also you state you have tried dec, Jan, Feb and 12L did ANY of those involve a CLEAN FLASH like a FULL WIPE or did you just update to them and call it broke.

Here's a screen recording of me scrolling through Google feed, play store, news, and podcast. All stock apps that should perform perfectly but there is stuttering. If it's not too much trouble could you upload a similar video so I can compare?

It's hard to judge the footage, since it's a 296x640 24fps? 30fps? recording, but it seems that what you refer to as "stuttering" is merely the scrolling animation, bringing the scroll to a "halt". Pretty sure that it's intentional, but then again it's hard to judge, since the quality of the video you shared doesn't offer much room for interpretation. We would need solid footage with 60fps or more to understand what you refer to as stutter.

as others have stated, it's best not to share media with your google photos account. others might be able to upload a video to compare. If you do want to share video, use a free upload service like share.riseup.net, for images use postimages.org (there's probably other services some will suggest).
I think what your seeing is pretty normal. mine isn't much smoother, and I don't think there's anything wrong with your phone. The only way to know for sure is to compare to another 6 Pro in real life - but that might not be possible (unless you go to a store that has it on display).
also like other user has suggested, that video will look worse because it isn't a high frame rate or resolution.
Go to developer options and enable "Force Peak refresh rate" and turn the 3 animation scale options to 0.0 (the latter probably won't do anything for scrolling but try it anyway).
edit--
Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with your phone. I think that sometimes we're so fixated on scrolling animation. It's totally fine to, but the phone has so much to offer. I don't use the Google apps you've suggested. I also feel that if this is really important to you, maybe the S21/S21 is a better phone.

This video was made using the screen record quick toggle straight from the phone after a clean flash of 12L. Updated all stock apps in the play store so everything is up to date. Can't really get more clean than that. Also recorded the morning after so things have settled. I can assure you its running at 120hz and not 60hz. Now that I check on my computer I can see it doesn't playback with 120 fps. I guess google photos doesn't pick up the framerate.

Footage quality can be increased to 1440p but you're right that it doesn't pick up the fps on a desktop, if you watch from your phone (if you have a pixel 6 pro) then it should show 120fps. I'll try to record again using something else. I get what you're saying about the scrolling animation but I feel its more that than. When compared to a S21 Ultra its much smoother with no hiccups. The best comparison is scrolling through settings and scrolling through google feed or google news. You can't tell me those two feel the same.
Hello,
I've had this phone for a week and while there are certain things I love about it (the fingerprint scanner and the cameras are amazing as you all know), I've been very disappointed with the phone's performance. In my case, the phone has a lot of hiccups and stuttering while browsing through menus and in particular, the screen has a delay and slows down if you're opening menus while you have youtube or the camera app or any kind of media open. If I had to describe it, it's as if the display slows to less than 60 hz while trying to play animations, with everything becoming slow and jagged and laggy, although I have set it permanently to 120 hz. The smoothness just isn't there and I noticed that if I open a youtube video and hit stop, the phone becomes decently smooth in menus, but as soon as I hit play, it slows down right away.
It's particularly strange since the phone does not overheat as I've read it does for some people, yet it has those performance issues even while playing videos at a lower resolution. Sometimes I get the same delay and lag even in basic apps such as messenger while typing. The scores I get in benchmark apps are the same I see in reviews, yet in real-world use, it's less smooth than a mid-range, not to mention other flagships. Hell, I still have my Oneplus 7 pro and that's way smoother and you don't even notice when you have youtube in the background.
Did anyone else experience that? Returning the phone would be quite a big hassle at this point, so I'm hoping there's something else I could do. I've tried all kinds of things like resetting the phone, allowing full access to battery for most apps and other similar measures, but I'm willing to try more.
Thanks.
Go to Developer settings > Running services
Running services is basically a task manager for Android
You can also terminate tasks in there
First active Developer settings. In case you don't already know.
Go-to Settings
Scroll down to about phone
In about phone go to build number and tap it multiple times until it says "you're now a developer!"
Go to outside of about phone and Developer settings will be below About Phone.
Hey, thanks for the reply.
Everything seems to be fine in terms of resource usage, or at least nothing seems to use a ton of resources.

You can click on the settings (three dots) on the top right corner and click "Show cached Processes", maybe the system is not getting rid of old cache data.

Okay, so I've discovered the main issue, but nothing that works to fix it yet. Thanks to your tip of using developer options, I activated the show refresh rate option and sure enough, it drops to 60 hz or lower in a lot of apps, despite me having it set at 120 hz permanently.
Now I know youtube and a lot of apps only support 60 hz, but the strange thing is that the entire screen drops to 60hz while using them. For example, if I check my notifcations or do anything else with the dropdown menu, the display just slows down in menus. As a reference, whenever I used youtube on my old One Plus 7 pro, the dropdown menu was always smooth and set at 90hz even while running youtube or other apps.
I've tried some apps like SmartHerz, Setedit and forcing 120 hz through ADB commands on the Vivo X80 pro, but I've had no luck yet. At least I know what to focus on, thank you for the tips.

Well at least you were able to narrow down the issue, hope it's easily fixable because the X80 Pro isn't a cheap android device, I certainly hoped it would come with good software.
Vivo implantation of LTPO panel seems to be bad and very laggy.
For reference, mine ROG6 is so much faster than the x80 pro it's not funny, and ALL the apps staying at my chosen refresh rate(unless it's hard coded to use a fixed value).
I'm on A13 beta atm, and i hope they'll fix it asap.
Yeah, it's such a shame to see this amazing hardware being held back by its software.

Any luck forcing refresh rate to 120 Hz ? I tried different options too but none of them work. Due to LTPO , the refresh rate keeps dropping to 24 Hz when there is no touch which is expected IF smart switch is selected. However since they have given an option to CHOOSE 120 Hz in settings then it should be forced even if it means more battery consumption. Currently that setting has little meaning.

No luck here, the option really is pointless and none of the tools that work to force the screen refresh rate for other phones work for Vivo at least from what I've tried. It's even stranger that the entire screen drops to 60 Hz throughout the menus as well, my One Plus 7 Pro kept the scrolling and the drop-down menu smooth at 90 Hz even while running apps like YouTube, but the X80 Pro just slows everything down.

Yes , if a Youtube video is playing then the Menu (Settings) screen drops 60 Hz. Otherwise its at 120 Hz if you are scrolling etc.
What's strange is that people are able to force OnePlus 10 Pro displays to 120 Hz refresh rate from what I've seen using apps like Setedit or ADB commands and that phone has an LTPO 2 screen. Not sure whether it's the LTPO 3 that makes those not work for X80 Pro or whether it's something from Vivo themselves.

It is likely Vivo's implementation. Afterall Its a variable refresh rate and Vivo can force it to 120 Hz if a setting is provided.
Hey guys I found a solution, kind of. Use brightness below a certain level, ltpo won't activate
I'm using around 30 percent, I checked using show refresh rate from dev options. If it's around 30 it stays 120 no matter which app you open. Also setting peak refresh rate to 1 in setedit helps. Good luck. I'll update once I find an option to stop ltpo from working using setedit or something. Plz reply if you know any better solution. Cheerio!
