Battery drain - How to find the issue - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I've been having relatively high battery drain over the past 3-4 weeks and extreme drain today.
I went out the house 85% percent and was on 50% about an hour later with approximately 15min screen on time inbetween.
It didnt even make it through the work day with very light usage which it normally survives with 40%.
How can I find out what causes the problem? It is not rooted and GSAM therefore only shows very superficial information.
The wake phases have been about 3h between 1am and 7am... when I was asleep.
I am on 8.0.0 Exynos
Thanks
I hope it will be back to normal asap because I was pretty impressed with the battery beforehand.

I use BetterBatteryStats (Needs some ABD commands to give permissions but doesn't need root)

Battery Life

I've had the phone since Sept 6th and this is 4th day I have my phone.
My battery life has been draining like crazy. I don't have a data plan, but I do go on wifi sometimes (not very often, and I don't keep it on for long). Maybe in total an hour to two a day.
I wouldn't say I am a heavy user, I don't play any games or watch any videos nor listen to music at all. I only sms and download apps.
It's been 5h 42m 35s since unplugged and my battery life is down to 57. I hardly use it, my settings are pretty much the lowest.
It says
Android System 40%
Cell standby 21%
Phone idle 13%
Display 12% (weird, since I have animations are turned off and I used lowest brightness)
Camera 6% (I took 3 photos)
Wifi 4%
Maps 2%
Dialer 2%
about 2 hours ago, I rooted my desire since I've read reviews that it makes it faster, prolongs battery life and what not. (plus I could do so much more with it later on). But my battery was still draining at like 1% every minute and half that I touch it. (I also have task killer, but I don't kill task very often)
Then my friend suggested I get SetCPU (which I did) around 2 hours ago after I rooted my phone. Then I went out and hardly touched the phone unless I received sms, or to check the time. And it went from like 69 to 56 (within that 2 hours of doing nothing)
I've searched the forum for extending battery life (and googled as well) and read other users who have the same problem, and I pretty much did what was recommended but it's still draining.
I can hardly make it through the day!!
Is there any other way that I can charge it (when to charge it) or.. do you think it might be my battery's problem? Should I buy a new one?
Thanks for all the help again (I know this kind of thread has already been done, but that was in like April)
Your battery takes time to settle if it's a brand new device. It takes a few charge/discharge cycles for that.
If after say 14 days you are still getting poor life I'd try calibrating it. Instructions are HERE.
thanks! i will try that if my battery life still drains this crazily in a week.

Batterylife

Hi!
I installed blackout ICS incredible in my DHD. Everything went well but I wanted to calibrate my battery.
So I downloaded Battery Calibration by NeMa from Google play. Before calibration my batterylife was about 12-24h depending on my use.
Now after the calibration my batterylife is about 5h!! And the same usage as I have always had, couple of calls, net surfing and maybe a little of Angry Birds and spotify.
Did I do something wrong or is my battery dead? My DHD is about 2 years old.
According to Google calibrating your battery (erasing your battery stats) doesn't actually do anything, so it shouldn't have made your battery life shorter. You could install BetterBatteryStats from a thread here on XDA to see if something else is eating your battery. Look at alarms and wakelocks.
Ok, thanks. I installed the BBS and I'll tell the alarms and wakelocks here if I don't find anything funny about them...
bananagranola is right.

calibrating your battery basically tells your OS how much batter it has or doesn't have. IF you flash a rom at less than 100% battery, then the max amount of battery your OS thinks it has might be different from how much your phone actually has. Sometimes this can affect battery life.
The other thing is, did you calibrate at 100%, then unplug immediately? If not, that might trick your OS into burning your battery so quickly.
Otherwise, 12hrs to 24 hours is super amazing, I'm a semi heavy user, and I'll only be able to get 12-14 hours of semi serious use (8 hours standby, 2 hours on off usage, some of that at 100% brightness when i'm outside, and lots of music), end of that I have only 32% left. 24 is pretty amazing, I wouldn't be complaining
Well when you simply reboot new stats are generated.

Ok, so I have had today the BBS running on the background. I tried one thing in afternoon, I switched of Wifi. Wifi was off about 3h and when I came back to home I switched wifi back to on. I have still 70% battery!! and about 12h without charging.
BBS alarms:
android, wakeups:83 (Is this much?)
com.google.android.gsf, wakeups:56
com.android.settings, wakeups:13
and the rest of them is under 10
BBS Kernel Wakelock:
wlan_rx_wake: 14m18s
PowerManagerService: 10m57s
and rest is under 4mins
BBS Partial Wakelocks:
AudioOut_3: 3min16s
Twitter sync: 1m56s
BBS Other:
Deep Sleep is about 10.5h
Wifi On/running is about 6h
Is there something wrong or is there something that uses too much battery? Could the battery be "damaged" due it's about 2 years old now?
Sorry for stupid questions but I find it very annoying that sometimes battery life is 5h and sometimes it's way more than 12h with same usage.

What you've got looks fine (which makes sense, since you had good battery life this time). Keep BBS installed. If/when battery life starts tanking, take a look at BBS and see if anything else pops up. If you've got more questions then feel free to post again here.
Although you might miss the customizations of the roms, aospX has great and I mean great, battery life.

Awful G3 Standby time

So ive been using my G3 for about 10 days now and have been getting pretty bad battery life at work with airplane mode on and only wifi and wanted to really test out the battery last night by leaving it unplugged overnight. I usually keep my phone plugged in overnight but since it was the weekend i was home on saturday and it was in the charger for basically the whole day i decided to test the battery. I unplugged the phone at around 2:50 and took the screenshots below at around 8. I lost 29% of my battery during that time and i was SHOCKED!!! my phone was on 4G however i have really good service where i live and was on 4-5 bars all night. the phone didn't have bluetooth, wifi, nfc... ect active. The phone was on 15% brightness (if that even matters since the screen was off all night). Before i took the screenshots i went into battery and saw that an app called "lyft" was said to use 70% so i uninstalled it before taking that screenshots. I really don't know what i should do because i am rooted and have already installed a tempered glass screen protector. Please help if possible!
Screenshots: http://imgur.com/j3kbWyJ ; http://imgur.com/EZekrFw
Edit: Its 9:37 now and around an hour and a half after i uninstalled lyft. I am now at 68% which is better than last night however still pretty bad considering i had a screen on time since last night of just 6 minutes and 29 seconds. Here are the screenshoot updates: http://imgur.com/azs4SWK ; http://imgur.com/DNZu8n9 ; http://imgur.com/qrz4nrx
Edit #2: Battery life continuing to drain fast i have 59% which means i have lost 9% in less than 2 hours of virtually no screen on time. I am very concerned and don't know what to do? If anyone has had this issue please let me know. Screenshots: http://imgur.com/8nOgVgj ; http://imgur.com/lSywjj4 ; http://imgur.com/KqGYAVK

Looks like wakelocks only. my G3 has a great standby time, overnight with WiFi on i lose 3% or so for 6hrs. SOT is not that good, but the phone Deep sleeps well.
Try removing unnecessary bloat.

Standby drain

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Sony Xperia XZ Premium's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
damn no reviews for this lol im just here letting you guys know that the standby battery is amazing went to sleep yesterday at 12am with 69% of battery woke up today at 7:30am with 67% damn my old lg v20 couldnt do that lol
It's quite bad here with standby drain as well. "Phone Idle" is always on top of the battery usage apps and it's probably a few percent an hour, depending on charge of course. >90% it's 1-2% an hour, but that increases when the charge level drops.
Stock .145 rom with storm//'s hack and have greenify running
Standby drain 0,2-0,4 %/h. locked BL, .145, Greenify.
phone idle coming top 3 with 6% took from 100% in about 4 hours! what could be causing that??
phone idle 4:11 hours
screen time 1:50 hours
36minutes of sniper 3d
7minutes playtube player while screen on (plus 20 minutes screen off)
I am on 57% just after 4 hours of use! while only 1:50 hours of them screen on!
phone idle for 4:11 hours took 6% which is a ratio of (1.5% per hour)
not good at all, what could be the problem??
I tried draining to 0 then charge to 100 on a straight charge while phone is off, phone is factory resetted, locked, not rooted, stock rom .119 oreo
what else can I do here?

I don't know but I have the same issue for months... Usually 2,4-2,8% per hour (when screen off!!) and battery stats not showing anything relevant.
I have everything stock, and I am using Greenify since a ~week, now I have 1,5%-1,8% on standby (which is still a lot, but improved compared to the previous situation).
Is really bad because if I detach my phone at 7 in the morning, at 14 I am already at ~80% without doing nothing! That's also means that using it, specially a lot with maps or things like that, I am not able to go farest than 17-21 :crying:

i noticed that factory reset didnt work for me, neither does software repair
so what I did was, flashed .179 firmware, fresh flashing, wiped every thing!
battery life was almost still the same, it got a lil better.
BUT, I am now using stamina mode any time I dont use the phone much, in my pocket, or even if im slightly using it (whatsapp, instagram etc...), I only turn it off when im gaming or watching some thing which is getting me to lose 1% every 4-6 minutes when using the device, and not losing anything when the device is off (as I activate the stamina mode) this should get me around 6:30-8:00 hours of screen time!
also I noticed I had viberation on navigation buttons, I also had face detection unlock and "ok google" unlock, and google feed and a lot of widgets and a live wallpaper, and avg running in the background.
so I disabled all of these useless features as I really dont use any of them (maybe rarely) and i can feel a slight improvement. (still slight improvement over slight improvement makes a noticeably improvement)
so now I unplugged my device at 17:00 at 90% more or less and now its 22:07 and i still got 56% so in about 5 hours I lost 34% while 2:14 hours, screen was on so its very impressive!
I can get to 6:45 hours of screen use which is very very good! im still testing though.
Nah i know its too late to write this but,.
For you all who have a problem draining battery even at sleep try Greenify Donation Package + Powernap xposed module
Even now my xzp still have sot around 6 hours with 15% battery left. With everything enabled like x-reality, auto brightness, mobile data.
Btw i'm using existenz v10 cusrom + DT2W Kernel

Any benefit to greenify these days?

I haven't been able to root my last few phones so I wasn't able to really use Greenify recently (i mean I know I could use it in non-root mode, but I never cared for that and found that to be kind of buggy)...
With all the battery improvements supposedly implemented as Android has continued to evolve, do you think that Greenify still offers any benefits?
My standby drain is not so good -
According to EXKM My idle drain is somewhere around 3-4%/hour.
According to BBS, so far today out of 5 hours 30 min on battery, I have drained 5.2%/hour, down 28% in total, with almost 3 hours of deep sleep (54%), 1 hour 23 min of screen on (25%), and 1 hour 5 min awake (w Screen off) (20%). The 1 hour 5 min awake seems high to me - I did listen to 15 minutes of music so that would explain 15 minutes of it.
I checked out my partial wakelocks and the highest is ImsSenderRxr.
According to Battery Usage in settings #1 is Screen at 1 hour 23 minutes (that's good it is first), #2 is Google Play Services which has used about half the same amount of battery as the screen, #3 is Ambient Display which has used almost as much as play services.
I'm going to try adding Greenify and see if that does anything beneficial, but figured I would ask the community to see what your mileage has been like with Greenify more recently since it has been awhile since I've used it.
Honestly, I haven't found much of a need for Greenify, aggressive doze, or wakelock blocking apps on 8.0 and above. It might be beneficial to Greenify battery hungry social media apps (especially those related to Facebook), but then you end up with Greenify running constantly in the background. Plus it requests usage permissions, enabling it as a device admin, etc.
Do you have Adaptive Battery enabled? There is a thread in the general section where a few users have reported that their battery life improved after disabling it.
I came here wondering the same. I had Greenify installed for a while but im not sure its really doing much anymore. I just took the lastest OTA update and im gonna roll without Greenify to see if there's a difference. Ill report back in a few days.
I know it's the wrong phone. But I have just bought a Pixel 3a and am introducing myself to its battery usage. I use Greenify on my Galaxy S7 running superman rom. I forgot to reinstall it last time I reinstalled things and I reckon it makes between 20% and 30% improvement.

My idle drain using EX is usually around 2%. What is your charging behavior... overnight and leave with 100% in the morning? I leave mine on the Pixel stand all night. If you are keeping it in your bedroom off-charger, use flip-to-shhh. You should have done that with BBS. If you didn't run BBS again overnight. 100% charged, hot off the charger and flip it upside down. This is just for a proper overnight battery drain test. Second, I would install Accubattery. It is NOT a battery drain app, but rather will eventually zero in on your remaining battery capacity compared with new. It uses several full charging sessions from say above 20% all the way to 100%. After a few full charging sessions it will give you solid information the condition of your battery. Just ruling the battery out here. If Accubattery confirms your battery capacity is well over 90% then you may want to do a fresh install. Sometimes that is the only thing that is going to return the good idle battery drain. Just my .02 cents. Take it for what it's worth. For reference, my battery capacity started at 106% new and is now at 94%. Cheers!
