Batterylife - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I installed blackout ICS incredible in my DHD. Everything went well but I wanted to calibrate my battery.
So I downloaded Battery Calibration by NeMa from Google play. Before calibration my batterylife was about 12-24h depending on my use.
Now after the calibration my batterylife is about 5h!! And the same usage as I have always had, couple of calls, net surfing and maybe a little of Angry Birds and spotify.
Did I do something wrong or is my battery dead? My DHD is about 2 years old.

According to Google calibrating your battery (erasing your battery stats) doesn't actually do anything, so it shouldn't have made your battery life shorter. You could install BetterBatteryStats from a thread here on XDA to see if something else is eating your battery. Look at alarms and wakelocks.

Ok, thanks. I installed the BBS and I'll tell the alarms and wakelocks here if I don't find anything funny about them...

bananagranola is right.

calibrating your battery basically tells your OS how much batter it has or doesn't have. IF you flash a rom at less than 100% battery, then the max amount of battery your OS thinks it has might be different from how much your phone actually has. Sometimes this can affect battery life.
The other thing is, did you calibrate at 100%, then unplug immediately? If not, that might trick your OS into burning your battery so quickly.
Otherwise, 12hrs to 24 hours is super amazing, I'm a semi heavy user, and I'll only be able to get 12-14 hours of semi serious use (8 hours standby, 2 hours on off usage, some of that at 100% brightness when i'm outside, and lots of music), end of that I have only 32% left. 24 is pretty amazing, I wouldn't be complaining

Well when you simply reboot new stats are generated.

Ok, so I have had today the BBS running on the background. I tried one thing in afternoon, I switched of Wifi. Wifi was off about 3h and when I came back to home I switched wifi back to on. I have still 70% battery!! and about 12h without charging.
BBS alarms:
android, wakeups:83 (Is this much?)
com.google.android.gsf, wakeups:56
com.android.settings, wakeups:13
and the rest of them is under 10
BBS Kernel Wakelock:
wlan_rx_wake: 14m18s
PowerManagerService: 10m57s
and rest is under 4mins
BBS Partial Wakelocks:
AudioOut_3: 3min16s
Twitter sync: 1m56s
BBS Other:
Deep Sleep is about 10.5h
Wifi On/running is about 6h
Is there something wrong or is there something that uses too much battery? Could the battery be "damaged" due it's about 2 years old now?
Sorry for stupid questions but I find it very annoying that sometimes battery life is 5h and sometimes it's way more than 12h with same usage.

What you've got looks fine (which makes sense, since you had good battery life this time). Keep BBS installed. If/when battery life starts tanking, take a look at BBS and see if anything else pops up. If you've got more questions then feel free to post again here.

Although you might miss the customizations of the roms, aospX has great and I mean great, battery life.

Battery Life

I've had the phone since Sept 6th and this is 4th day I have my phone.
My battery life has been draining like crazy. I don't have a data plan, but I do go on wifi sometimes (not very often, and I don't keep it on for long). Maybe in total an hour to two a day.
I wouldn't say I am a heavy user, I don't play any games or watch any videos nor listen to music at all. I only sms and download apps.
It's been 5h 42m 35s since unplugged and my battery life is down to 57. I hardly use it, my settings are pretty much the lowest.
It says
Android System 40%
Cell standby 21%
Phone idle 13%
Display 12% (weird, since I have animations are turned off and I used lowest brightness)
Camera 6% (I took 3 photos)
Wifi 4%
Maps 2%
Dialer 2%
about 2 hours ago, I rooted my desire since I've read reviews that it makes it faster, prolongs battery life and what not. (plus I could do so much more with it later on). But my battery was still draining at like 1% every minute and half that I touch it. (I also have task killer, but I don't kill task very often)
Then my friend suggested I get SetCPU (which I did) around 2 hours ago after I rooted my phone. Then I went out and hardly touched the phone unless I received sms, or to check the time. And it went from like 69 to 56 (within that 2 hours of doing nothing)
I've searched the forum for extending battery life (and googled as well) and read other users who have the same problem, and I pretty much did what was recommended but it's still draining.
I can hardly make it through the day!!
Is there any other way that I can charge it (when to charge it) or.. do you think it might be my battery's problem? Should I buy a new one?
Thanks for all the help again (I know this kind of thread has already been done, but that was in like April)
Your battery takes time to settle if it's a brand new device. It takes a few charge/discharge cycles for that.
If after say 14 days you are still getting poor life I'd try calibrating it. Instructions are HERE.
thanks! i will try that if my battery life still drains this crazily in a week.

This battery life isn't normal right? Bad drain

I cant tell if it's always been like this. Or if this actually isn't normal because I'm always concern with battery life. Im a very heavy user in the sense my phone will be on and im texting, xda, social apps i.e google +, email check every hr, and twitter.
However, i started feeling like my battery has been draining alot faster when the screen is on. I have no problem with the phone sleeping. I was experience this on Calk rom and now acs ics rom. I literally can look at my battery percentage drop 10% in like a half hour. Is this normal if screen is on the whole time? I've used better battery stats and system panel I can't find anything causing the drain. I see the suspend and events but doesn't that effect the phone sleeping?

Are you on the new modem? Looks like you have weak a signal. EG31 might help a little if your not on it already. I used the full EG31 tar right when it dropped and have been getting great battery life (it may be to early but so far so good)

not sure if its going to work but hoping it does thanks for the response still
turn your display down to under 50% you won't see a difference except outside in daylight and kill this app every time you reboot the phone hit Settings>Applications>Running services then hit DRM content > stop > ok
I get over a day on one charge.

Ok ill try the drm content stop..however my display brightness is already down at like 10%.
Also, kill the Social Hub as well, that drains the battery significantly.
You might try one of several roms available in dev. They address most of the aforementioned issues.

The biggest battery drain reason is the location by wireless network option. Make sure its unchecked. Ever since I did that, my battery life has been awesome. I get to keep my brightness high, Bluetooth on, etc...

All the basics (brightness and all that stuff) on top of the stuff you have running. The darn task killer/manager I see in the icon top left of your screenshot is a HOG on resources check the caching... You can literally **** with these phones for half a day to set it up the right way to conserve. I think wireless is hogging too but I am talking primarily about the first part of your rapid loss, the left part of the graph so to speak.
JC
I purchased an extended battery and was still getting crappy battery life. SpareParts always FC'd on me... but last night I found Badass Battery Monitor in the market and in my opinion it's even better than SpareParts!
It helped me find that the Hotmail app was keeping my phone awake for almost an hour every day even though I had it set to download email only once a day. Removed that right away.
Plus it gives a great % readout in notification of the battery level. I think it's a fairly new app, but it really is worth checking out especially if you're having battery drain problems.
Just killing Social Hub has increased my battery life significantly. I'm at 11 hours now on battery, with 62% left. This is from last night when I unplugged the phone at 100%.

I'm on the Sydnicate Rom there isn't even no social hubb app. He has alot of the mods like noCiq and everything. My phone sleeps well its just when I start using it I can see it basically draining like 10% every half hour. I'm a heavy user I know my phone will drain fast while I'm on it I just would expect it to last 8-10 hours on heavy use.
Right NOW:
I'm at 4 hours 12 mins 22 secs at 37% left.
Display Time is 50% 2 hrs 41 mins 51s (Brightness is set all the way down)
Android OS 10%
So I'm assuming in 2 more hours my phone will die. If this is just normal for a heavy user then I guess I have to deal with it?
I was very disappointed with my Epic Touch when I first got it. I was getting a dead battery in about 6 to 8 hours no matter what I did or did not do.
Calibrating the battery seems to have fixed it.
I'm at 73% battery with 8:32 hours up time and I've made about 12 calls ranging from 2 to 10 minutes.
I've also checked voice mails, emails and other stuff.
I just charged the battery til it was full, plugged and repeated until it stayed at 10%, popped into CWM5 and cleared the battery data and then used Battery Calibration from the market (free) and it's like a got a battery upgrade!
As far as wake lock issues, I've not having any of those. I took my charger off the phone around 3:30am this morning (100% charge) and when I left for work at 6:50am, I had 98% battery still.
When I got to work it was down to 96%, I checked my email on the drive there.
I'm trying this out, wish me luck.
There doesn't seem to be any possible way to charge my battery to 100%, unplug it and not have it immediately drop to 99%.

If those screens are both from the same charge, I see nothing wrong with your phone.
you have 17% left, and you have 2.5 hours of screen on time. So you're on target to get just over 3 hours of on screeen time which is completely in the norm for these phones. AND you're over 12 hours. I don't understand what else you could ask for?
People get all caught up on total charge time, but, to be honest, it's completely IRRELEVENT.
If I dont use my phone I'll get easily over 48 hours out of the phone... Screen on time is what matters. And from a full charge, if I were to use my phone for 4 straight hours without stopping, it would be about dead. When the screen is on, you're using the phone, and the display is the biggest battery suck out there. When I do all the tricks to conserve battery, and I set it up right, I get 4 hours screen on time, which is pretty incredible with these phones.
Now, If you WANT to get better then you have right now, a few things are coming into play.
1) Your signal is weak, this will suck power no matter what more then it should, so get better signal if you want some more time out of your phone.
2) If you installed a new rom, and you didn't calibrate your battery properly, you're losing battery life.
to calibrate properly:
a) download battery callibration app from market
b) charge to 100%
c) unplug battery charger and REPLUG IN and wait for 100%
d) repeat step c a couple times
e) while plugged in hit the calibrate battery button in the app
f) unplug phone and use til dead and recharge
This will yeild you the best battery life.
3) De-Theme. Although I use a theme, every theme I've tested, for one reason or another, drains my battery faster then running the stock phone theme.
4) If you haven't done the basic battery saving things, you should do them to help yourself out. Here's a few I use.
a) Turn off background data, you only need it on to use market
b) Turn off, or set sync for all email and social apps at as long intervals as possible
c) dont use any widgets
d) download watchdog lite so you can see when apps are acting up and using extra battery
e) when you're done using your phone, open task manager, kill all apps, and clear memory
f) always leave the brightness off automatic and as low as possible
g) download SETCPU and run your phone at 800mhz, and undervolt as much as possible (50mv most all phone can take)
h) use black or dark wallpapers, on LED screens back means the pixel is off which uses less battery
G will be your biggest battery save. I've also tried using the SUPERFREEZE thing in the dev section and, besides in sleep mode, I saw no adverse effect. If you wanna kill socialhub, fine, but I dont see any noticable difference on my phone with it off.
If you do all these I promise you'll get better battery life.
Wow, I did a proper calibration today and I'm getting great results already. I've calibrated before but I never had cleared stats in CWM or did the unplug then replug charging thing.
Anyways, I after 12 hours I'm still at 35%! The longest I've ever gone before is 12.5 hours. Screen on time = 1 hour 30 min, but some of that was a battery intensive game (puzzle quest 2). Also i'm running calk's rom, so i'm sure that helped.
Thanks kdoggy, i didn't expect to see results this great.
Those are good tips too Jermzz, thanks!

Is this normal?

I have had my Nexus for almost two months now and the battery life on it... well I get maybe two hours of usage on it (screen on, auto brightness) and i came from an iPhone which gave like 5 on full brightness.
All the reviews I read about the phone talked about great battery but really... When i get home everyday the battery is almost dead and i'm talking light usage.
This does not sound normal. I'm on a GSM nexus and I can typically get close to 4 hours of screen on time without trying too hard. On a typical day, I go to bed with about 50% left. Check the battery stats in settings and see if your phone is constantly awake. Sometimes rouge apps can do that. Sitting in a dead zone can also use up battery quickly. Its possible you have a bad battery, but I bet something else is causing poor battery life.

That is dependent on a lot of variables. You could be listening to a lot of music, preventing the phone to go in deep sleep, an app could cause a wakelock, preventing it again to go to deep sleep, are you on Stock? Do you use a dark or a white wallpaper, are you in an area with bad phone reception etc. etc.
If you could give us some more info (preferrably screenshots) we might be able to help you. Screenshots of the battery usage during the day, the apps that consume most, the diagram which states how battery usage is combined with network reception etc.
Besides that you could install CPU SPY to see how much your phone spends in deepsleep. If that isn't looking well you could install betterbatterystats to find out if there is an app causing a wakelock.
I don't listen to much music and have a black background. It is running stock 4.0.1 and for about half my day I have no service but the phone is in airplane mode at that time so it doesn't kill the battery using the radios.
I'll update with screenshots of normal usage

[Q] battery life suddenly horrendous

My battery life suddenly became horrible this morning. Normally I unplug my phone every morning around 6AM, and i dont need to charge it again until closer to 9PM.
This morning, I realized that despite being on a full charge at 6AM as usual, my battery was completely depleted by 10. I checked the battery "app" and it said that phone idle and cell standby were both at 13% usage, and that was the most i had used my phone. it registered the full time (4 hours) of usage for those 2 but it also said that it was only responsible for 13 % of my battery drain each. After that there was google play services.
I figured it was just a fluke, so I reboot the phone and recharged it. Once again, the battery drained in a mere 4 hours. This time it told me a voice call of only 10 minutes length was responsible for 35% of my battery drain, and that having my screen on for a seperate 10 minutes was responsible for 25% of my battery drain. This might be fine and dandy if the actual draining chart showed a steep fall off when i made the call, but that is not the case. the chart is a straight line showing constant drainage with no steep or flat areas. I'm thinking something is definitely wrong and the phone is causing itself to drain. maybe something hardware oriented, since i dont even have very many apps downloaded.
I've literally only interacted with my phone maybe 3 times today, and I didnt even do anything major.
Do you guys have any ideas as to what is going on with it?
I'm CM10, latest stable. not the monthlies. no cpu hacks or anything, and as I said, this problem cropped up this morning. before this everything has been fine.

If I hadnt already made sure I was following the tips and I wasnt dead sure that something was the problem, I would not have made this post.
I did manage to figure out the problem by sheer dumb luck and a little bit of educated guessing.
I uninstalled the MyFitnessPal and tried again today. I'm exhibiting normal battery drain now (10 hours and im at 46% with not too much usage of the phone).
If you read the post I made, no apps were showing up as a large battery drainer, and all my stats were reporting incorrect times (13% battery usage for a 4 hour period despite showing me i only used the phone for 10 minutes). So something was definitely wrong. Uninstalling the app fixed the issue though, so for anyone who exhibits this problem, uninstall whatever apps you most recently installed and do a reboot.
I didnt have to reset or anything.

How Bad is Your WiFi Standby Drain?

Reading through some battery threads I was told that the "proper" way to check your overnight drain was to charge up to 100% and not touch it until the next morning. I tried this last night and WiFi drain was in the 30% range (I used my phone before taking the screenshot which is why it's at 22%) with a total drop of 7% (100-93% over 8 hours).
Does this seem high?
I've got WiFi, NFC, battery saver location, mobile data, and double tap to wake on. The phone is rooted and I'm using a custom kernel (but I'm pretty sure it happened with the stock kernel too). I also have an Android Wear watch attached all night. On AOSP ROMs on my OP3T overnight drain was around 2% if I started at 100% and WiFi was never more than maybe 6% of total drain. Again, I'm not asking how to fix this, I'm just wondering if this is something that others are experiencing.
Thanks!
Mine dropped 2% over four hours of sleep. I'll try with battery saver on.
Mine averages about 3% in 8hrs with wifi on, I'll post a screenshot tomorrow, on freedomos using simplegx kernel
My WiFi drain is very low during idle. Like most flagships of this era.
mine is as same as op, but last night i charged it upto 74 and slept and when i got up after 6 hrs or so it dropped 2 %, strange ... maybe it's the way the phone is charged and calibrated for dash charging
I'm loosing 4-5% in 8 hours.

Thanks for these screenshots. Obviously I don't have nearly the SOT that you do in my screenshot, but it looks like if our SOTs were the same you'd probably have similar WiFi percent usage.
Mine's been surprisingly bad - at least, worse than my Moto G5S, Galaxy S8+ or iPhone 8 Plus were. I'm losing like 5-7% every four hours, my battery drain while connected to wifi at work is way worse than either of the other phones mentioned too.
All in all it's kind of disappointing considering how good the OP5T is in literally every other regard.

We may have similar WiFi usage. But my drain is about .5% per hour, overnight. I don't consider that high, and battery consumption has to be attributed to something. Here is my current usage since yesterday's charge.
On 8.0 the WiFi drain % is even lower, but idle drain per hour is the same. So it doesn't really matter.
Very bad.. Battery go. Down quickly in night..
My wifi drain is also really bad on the latest 4.7.4
Hope they release a fix soon...
Edit... I did a fresh install with stock 4.7.4 and it isn't as bad but still is present. At least it's more tolerable.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A5010 using Tapatalk
So I did another test last night (4.7.4 and SimpleGX kernel) and had 3% drain. With all the comments here I think the high percentage of WiFi is normal and probably not affecting battery life a lot. I am starting to think the kernel may be providing better results than stock 4.7.4 though since a lot of people are mentioning poor battery on 4.7.4.
I don't even know how long, all I can say is my battery drains 3% every 9 and a half hours. Both bluetooth and wifi was on. This is on the stock rom and kernal, not sure how you guys have such high battery drain... Are you guys sure it isn't another app hijacking your battery? Because from my experience the battery stats isn't always perfect. Sometimes I was told that it was my screen (on my old phone) in which it was actually a 3rd party app. After removing the app, my battery drain went a lot slower than usual.

Just tried that setting last night and it doesn't make much difference.
For all wondering I have an Android Wear device connected 24/7 and location set to battery saving. I also keep NFC and data on all night. I'm not using screen-off gestures though.
I wish it was only 7% or something like that on my OP5T.
I used to be one of you 3%-battery-"drain"-at-night-guys, until the official update to Oreo. Now it uses 36% in 6h38m, of which WiFi is reported being 29% (1044mah, despite 0m active and background usage reported). There is 2.8MB additional use according to the WiFi data usage report that was set to count from today, yet the numbers per app have decreased, so there goes reliability on that. I haven't added or removed any apps, only wiped cache after the update. On standby, it only takes 18 hours for it to drain, which used to be several days.
Another weird thing is that WiFi is terribly slow since the same update, but only on this device. (No numbers yet)
Right now my plan is to test all the mentioned related settings, as well as WiFi off, make screenshots after each nightly test, and finally do a complete wipe and perform the same tests with a minimum of apps, and then redo them again with my usual set of apps. It could still be one or more apps that misbehave on Oreo specifically I suppose, so if there's any indication for that, I will start eliminating apps one by one until I find the culprit.
