Pixel 2 XL overheating issue while using hotspot ? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

My pixel 2 XL get very hot when you use it while hotspot is on . How to over come this overheating issues. I never faced this issue on HTC U11 and other phone with snapdragon 835 and Exynos and I was also using hotspot on them regularly but its more noticeable in pixel 2 xl ….any solution? would rooting or installing custom rom would help ?
thanks

The phones you mention, including the U11, have gone to using glass on the back, which is a very effective insulating material. The P2XL has an aluminum back, and aluminum conducts heat. So in reality, the P2XL is not "overheating". The aluminum is just soaking up the heat generated by the components.
A custom kernel may help if it supports undervolting, but that only affects the processor, not the modem. For the most part however, I would simply leave the firmware alone and enjoy your device.

Just because you can feel the heat on the back doesn't mean its overheating. Install some app like CPU monitor and check the temperature on it.

Galaxy S3 overheating

I've read somewhere that others are having the same issue I'm experiencing. The phone gets progressively warm to the touch as u get closer to the home button. I think it got lost in the forum break up but I was wondering if its worth exchanging while I still can or is this normal for the s3?

It's pretty much normal phone is very thin is very powerful there's nothing to absorb the heat.
I have had mine replaced once already, but not for overheating. Both phones I have had get the same amount of hotness in the area you describe, but I don't think its a cause for concern. I'm running overclocked at 1.8GHz right now and haven't noticed it getting any hotter. You should be just fine.
My Galaxy S3 i747m from Rogers run quite warm as well... After some Counter Strike Portable for about an hour, my phone is pretty warm especially on the front of the glass...
The back is pretty warm as well.
I use the widget Battery Solo from Google Play store to check my phone's internal temperature and it hit around 46 degC (pretty high for a phone lol)
Running all stock: ROM, CPU speeds etc..
My old Captivate never hit more than 35 degC even under some gaming..
Having a phone that is thin and faster than my 2010 MSI Wind netbook is probably the trade off for the heat. I mean on my MSI Wind, there are fan and vents.. On the S3 there is definitely no fans and no vents. Not to mention passive cooling since the phone is practically a complete Plastics build....
If the S3 has more metal especially on the outer housing (battery cover for e.g.), then the metal piece could act as a passive cooling solution...
***I just checked on eBay, and there are aluminum battery replacement covers for the Galaxy S3 all variants. The aluminum 3rd party covers will maintain the Galaxy S3's thickness so all your cases would fit.
BUT IN THIS CASE, the cover will not act as a very effective passive cooling solution due to the interior of the batter cover is covered with plastic, and only the outer layer has a very thin piece of aluminum plate.
Technically though, the aluminum battery cover from eBay may give the phone a slightly more solid build... Not to mention it comes in different colors as well... I have already ordered the Lime Green for my White GS3 ^_^
Try flashing a different kernel. I prefer using Ktoonsez's kernel, but it's totally up to you.
But as mentioned above, the device getting hot is normal, since it has to hold a massive screen with thin design. I wouldn't expect too much difference.
Thanks guys.

Your sig says you are using AOKP. I had the same observation (phone gets warm and sometimes hot) when using both the ICS and the JB AOKP versions. I have cpuspy installed and it shows the 1512 Hz being used quite often on the AOKP builds compared to say the stock sammy ROM. This in my opinion contributes to the phone getting warm.
I do not believe this is really an issue per se - it might be just that the AOKP kernel deals with CPU scaling freq a bit differently.
The stock Sammy kernel does a great job of utilizing the lower freqs which makes the phone run real cool.

overheating fixed...
I have know this problem with my S2, it even burned my SD card I had to reformat...
I have met the same phenomenon on my new S3 with a battery I had to recharge twice a day...
I think to have found a solution, look at \parameters\battery. You will distinguish the percentage of consumption of each application in use. And in my case, it was the application "Multimedia" which consumed up to 60%. We can force a complete stop. What I did. Since the opening of a photo takes just a little longer, but my battery is 48 hours and without overheating ...
Ya mine too gets hot at about 43ºC, while playing games... rest is fine.... its slim design is the main cause I beleive. ... nothing to worry....

How bad is the overheating and wifi performance?

I've a few posts about the heating issues with this device, and just wanted to get more opinions. I've also heard about poor performance via wifi )(and even issues with wired?) and would like to hear about that as well.
I'm surprised with similar hardware that is normally passively cooled (nexus 7) has heating issues. I know they run it a higher clock rate because there isn't a reliance on a battery. But I read the dev version ran even hotter and they addressed this in an update. The only way I could see addressing this via an update is by clocking it at a lower speed. I saw a video of someone playing dead trigger and at parts it seemed much choppier than my nexus 7, which made me think it's running too hot.
I've heard about people running it on its side and it runs cooler that way? I'm basically wondering if stock cooling is sufficient and any info on wifi/nic issues.
For me... Taking the board out of the case was the best cooling solution. That and my cigarette pack mod lol
The case is a crap design IMO and I also wondered why tegra 3 phones run better with passive cooling and no way for the heat to escape other than absorbtion.
The extra strain on the GPU when running 1080 also doesn't help. My monitor and TV only allow 1080, so 720 upscale isn't an option for me!

I don't think it has any real heat issues, people just enjoy doing those kind of mods, (probably in the hopes that overclocking will be a possibility). the wifi and bluetooth though do seem to have issues, probably due to the metal case.

Wi-Fi is shameful. My "gaming TV" is around 10 metres from my wireless router and OUYA (differently from Wii and PS3) cannot detect it, so I have to unplug the phone and move the router each time I want to go online.
The WiFi is unforgiveable, hopefully it's just a software issue. Wired internet is rock solid...never had any overheating. It does get hot, but Tegra 3 should be able to handle it.
I've only had 1 heating problem and it was my own fault (in a way). I currently have the kill processes upon exit unchecked, something that's required for certain sideloaded apps, and an app got stuck on over night. For whatever reason even though I put the OUYA in sleep mode, which should kill most of the apps (and does), it didn't that time. THe next day, the OUYA was hot to the touch. A quick reset fixed the problem and it cooled down in minutes. But to put that into perspective, my OUYA has never even heated up very much after 3-4 hours of gameplay and streaming 1080p video, only that one time.
As for wifi, after the last few updates, I haven't had any problem with connecting to Wifi and even the speed seems to be...tolerable, even with my router upstairs . I know this isn't the case for everyone, however, and I still tend to rely on ethernet as it just works better.
Thanks all for the info.
But I still get the vibe some say it's a poor case design (and causes overheating) and some say it's not an issue.

Hmm if a runaway app was taxing the cpu/gpu and it got hot to the touch, I would think a game would do the same, I guess it depends on the game.
Taking the board out of the case was the best cooling solution.

This is what I've read in other places and not too thrilled about having to leave it out of it's case.
Someone mentioned bluetooth issues as well. I hadn't heard that before but I guess it makes sense if wifi has issues.
I wonder, has anyone used wifi/bluetooth when it's out of case? Just wondering if the case is shielding too much.
I really want to buy a couple of these, (one mainly for xbmc) but I'll definitely need wifi where I plan to put it so I'll think I'll hold off to see if there is an update resolving this.
mine does get very hot, but not "overheated". processors get hot, its a fact of, umm, tech.
wifi works WAY better out of the case. i mean, 100x better. i've never had a bluetooth connectivity problem.
i wonder what the source on thes heat issues might be.
thechnically the t33 shouldnt be too much different from the t37 in my htc one x+ which i enabled to run all cores @ 1,7ghz, too
i have to say, the phone tends to get very hot while playing demanding games like ravensword etc. but never throtteled too much.
i wonder what voltages for the consoles are and about the max gpu-frequency. can anybody tell?
else i have to wait for mine to arrive.
was lucky to shoot one brown limited edition one with 2 extra controllers on ebay for just 85 bucks
Sufficed to say I've not really noticed the overheating issue as I haven't really been monitoring it. The fan kicks in fairly noisy now and then but I only notice it when it's on my desk when I'm doing wired ADB tasks. When it's across the room I don't hear it.
As far as the WIFI is concerned it's my opinion that it's more firmware issue than the casing. When I took original delivery I set it up in my kitchen using WIFI. My kitchen is about as far away from my modem as is possible to get in my house and it connected just fine. I used it for a while with no problem. When I scanned for wireless networks it picked up 7 if I remember correctly, this is roughly the same as I get if I scan using my Galaxy Note 2 or Nexus 7. This obviously included all my neighbors networks BTW. After a subsequent firmware update it wouldn't connect and wouldn't see my modem. I scanned dozens of times trying to find a signal but no joy. The maximum number of networks it has detected since is just 2. Luckily every room in my house has a RJ45 network socket so it's not a problem. It's fairly obvious to me that this firmware update had a very negative impact.

[Q] [NOOB Q]Note 2 heating up

When I'm playing games with high graphic details, my Note 2 is getting hot. I know that the hot is from CPU/GPU usage.
Can I play freely and without beeing concerned after the phone is getting hot?
How long can I play after the phone is getting hot?
For the most part it can get too hot to hold and not damage any of the internals. Although the battery will wear down quicker at high heat

For those game which need high consumption on your phone resources,... It is normal. Perhaps that's the reason samsung use hard plastic instead of metal
As long as your phone never face any sudden reboot due to heat, then it is fine. I've used many Samsung smartphone, from the lowest specs, till Note 2 (except Note 3... not enought budget so far :fingers-crossed, and I know heat is normal for Android device. And please don't compare with iPhone, due to different O/S character.
And yes, when the phone get hotter, the battery will run down faster.
This is what I know. You may correct me if I'm wrong, I just wrote based on my experience.
but if you concern about the heat, then you can stop playing that particular game(s) on your Note 2, or you can try to change kernel. This might help a bit. Different kernel will give different performance.

Thanks for responding.
I can't change the kernel because my phone is still in warranty and I'm risking to lose it.
I knew that getting hot is normal, but even if I know that, I'm still concerned. That's the reason why I asked that Q. I hope is normal and I hope i can play freely on the phone without thinking at the worst.
Please excuse my english.

Does your OP3 become a flaming ember?

I love my new Oneplus 3 which I've had for less than 4 days. Everything's great except one thing: the phone get super warm when we go outside. The battery temp reads at 37C to 38C. The phone has not yet malfunctioned due to temperature, however it feels very warm to touch. And I'm not even using it much - it is either idle in pocket, or it plays audio via headphones.
I know it is summer, and temperatures outside are scorching, but have two other phones and they do not produce that effect. I am speculating that it might be the aluminum casing of OP3 that conducts the heat more easily than plastic on other devices.
Does anyone experience the same with their OP3?
What should be a good battery temperature for an idle phone in summer when it is around 35C outside?
Try disabling all gestures and fingerprint sensor.
Mine has never gotten hot before and I'm on it all day. I have my gestures turned off, night mode enabled as well as sRGB. My brightness is set to probably 20%. I only have notified actions enabled for apps that actually need to notify me.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3000 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I've got all gestures and fingerprint scanner left on. No issues here. Although there is a known issue with the fingerprint scanner activating while the phone is in a pocket causing heat and battery drain. Disable the scanner or turn the phone away from your thigh to remedy.
That's normal. Move on.

Thanks guys. I will disable gestures and fingerprint scanner, and see how it goes.
I know 38C is not high for a battery, so the more strange it is that the device feels so very warm.
it's the metal...it's my first time my phone doesn't have a plastic back, i wondered the same. the temperature in your pocket will make it always feel a bit warm. if they say "cold" they mean it doesn't have got any heatspots
I have the OP sandstone case on mine. Heat is a non issue. My Moto X pure though, that hot as was my HTC m7

Google Pixel XL - BootLoop - Momentarily solves with hair dryer

Hi! , my google pixel xl (2 years old) a few days ago started in an infinite bootloop, I never rooted it or unlocked its bootloader, I could solve it by heating the pixel for 5 minutes with a hair dryer, but this solution only lasts for 24 hours.
I can access the recovery and bootloader mode.
I was in charge of investigating, and this problem has the nexus, which is solved for a short period by heating it with a hair dryer, this apparently stops the nuclei that cause the loop and revives.
In nexus cell phones a file was created to flash, which deactivates these nuclei.... is there something similar for the google pixel xl?
My Doubt is:
Did anyone else suffer from this problem?
What do you recommend me to do?
Thank you very much
+1 i'm the same with Google Pixel
Mine started experiancing this as well a few weeks back. Also before experiencing this issue the phone had been oem locked and running stock os Although for me it was to freeze my phone to have it boot. The list of this complaint seems to be increasing around the same time.

It's onboard UFS failure.
I had this exact behavior on one of my pixels, but it got so bad that a portable floor heater would not even let it boot.
The only real way to fix it is to repair the UFS chipset on the device.

Sounds like a cracked solder joint on a flat pack or one of the PCB components.
Lol, let me guess they use no lead solder... lead is your friend.
