Wireless headphones! - Google Pixel 3 XL Accessories

Hey all - couple of headphone questions:
Has anyone found a wireless headphone that allows the Google assistant functions like the included Pixel buds?
Is there any benefit to using bluetooth 5.0 headphones? AFAIK, looks like it's just low power usage would be the benefit over the older set of tao tronics that I use - which I love at the gym and want the wire to secure them when they're out of my ear... but always looking for an excuse to feed my headphone addiction...

I'm currently using Bose QC35 II, it has an integrated google assistant functions, so far its great. unfortunately, the embedded Bluetooth chipset is 4.1

I use the Bowers & Wilkins PX and the Sony 1000xm3, and both work with assistant.

Power beats...

I'm using the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless and they have a built in assistant features with a single tap of the right ear bud. BT 5.0 has the following benefits (excluding the new low power mode): Dual Audio which lets you play audio on two connected devices at the same time, transfer speeds increased to 2 Mbps (double of BT 4.2), supposedly the range has been increased to 800 feet (quadruple of BT 4.2). I'm sure there are more benefits but these are the ones that stick out to me the most personally.

I use the Jabra elite active 65t, it has the ability to press the button on the right ear bud to activate Google assistant. It works well, sound quality is good but not spectacular, you have to adjust the bass up quite a bit in their app, as if you use it in the music app, then play in your car it will be too much and you'll have to turn off the equalizer.

I'd like to second this guy's recommendation of the Senheiser Momentum True Wireless.
I have tried quite a few different "true wireless" sets... One was the liberty zolo+ (an anker brand), one is the Funcl A1, and another one that I can't remember. Nothing has come anywhere close to the sound quality that the senheisers have had. They truely sound like there is not a compromise on audio quality, and if that matters to you - they are the only choice.
Another thing that I have is the "Earstudio ES100" - https://www.amazon.com/EarStudio-ES100-24bit-High-Resolution-Bluetooth-Unbalanced/dp/B078H4YD2L
This thing is amazing. It received the bluetooth, goes digital to analog, and then amps it. you can then use any wired headset you want. This sounds awesome, you leave your device at 100 percent volume with it and then it handles the volume (this helps if you have any volume "steps" that seem like weird gaps). Has some nice hardware based equalizers, just all around awesome.
Both of these I think allow you to do the google assistant

i'm using the jabra 65t active's and they are fine , google assistant works

For anyone who doesn't want to spend more than $50 here's the budget option : https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Signature-Bluetooth-Earbuds-Charging/dp/B07HGL3J31
It supports Google Assistance with 2 clicks on either side.
I've been using it for 2 weeks and so far it has been a pleasant experience, especially for that price alone. The main downside is the in-call audio is only mono, meaning only the right ear works, also buttons could have been easier to click though

AKG Q460 + android

Hi, anyone know if in the headphones AKG Q460 the play/pause and next/previous track buttons work in android (SGS2)?

same question
If you download an app like 'Headset Controller App' you can use any 3 button remote and mic on Android. The app recognises and configures any buttons to whatever functions you want, real handy, use it all the time on my HTC desire S with 'Made for iPhone' earphones, no problems
one more question.
I've some problem with mobile-headphones. The standart headphone they without mic and has just 2 lines on TRS 3.5 but mobile headphone has 3 lines on TRS 3.5.
The problem is when I connect my samsung\black-berry headphones to my MP3 Iaudio I7 so I hear very very weak until I click some buttom on the cable of headphone.

Are you really sure about this ? I have read mixed reports on Headset Controller Button. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Seems to depend on the headsets, and also on the android smartphone.
I'm desperately trying to find if a AKG headset (Q460 or K451) can be made to work (all 3 buttons) with my Xperia Arc S. This info seems just IMPOSSIBLE to find right now !!!
Sorry for the late answer, But I am registered since only a few minutes.
Try it with the included Nokia-Adapter. This works fine on my xperia x10 mini.
If you upgrade your phone to the newest version of android, they will definitely work. Tried it already

Hi
I have an Xperia SL and this is not working...
I can stop/play the music, but cannot receive calls and no one hears me when I speak to the phone's mic.
is there a way to solve it?
I'm using AKG Q460
thanks
I have the Q460 and Galaxy S3.
The Play/Pause/Next Track function works. The Mic and Vol control does not.
The Q460 was made for the Iphone/Ipod with a 4 pole jack.
The limitation is a physical (wired) connection that is not present on the Android phones.
Bear in mind the headset was also tuned for the Iphone4/5 - sound will be weaker and distorted on my Galaxy-for example - but sounds OK with PC/Kindle Fire output.
I ordered a headphone amp for my S3 to fix that problem.
If you want phone functions on android get an AKG model that supports the android phones of which there are several.

In the last 6-7 months I reviewed a few dozen of headphones with fixed or removable iDevice cables and EVERY single one worked on my Note 2 w/android 4.1.2. I mean, volume up/down will not work because iDevices use different resistor values in the remote, but multifunction button worked perfectly for play/pause/call, double click to skip, and long press for Google Now. I was under impression Galaxy S3 was supporting 4pole jack as well with extra control signal. So Vol not working is expected, but I wonder if something is wrong with your mic?
Btw, how do you like Q460? I just did search, seems to be bass oriented, not much of mids/treble details (I only trust Tyll's reviews: http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/akg-quincy-jones-k460)

I just took a second look at my s3 factory earbuds, thanks to you, and they sure do have 4 poles. Two of the four are supposedly reversed on iPhone, as has been stated elsewhere. So the issue is still wiring in my opinion, Different resistor values- not sure but sounds like it would be an issue, no pun intended. I did not test my mic so I cannot say that it does not work, so I stand corrected. Which leaves me with the same observations that you had with the i devices cords. I stay with my original contention- that no "App " will fix this.
As far as reviews I listened carefully to two tracks looking for bias/distortion : " Animus Vox" by the Glitch Mob which carries the full spectrum and "Them Shoes" studio version, by Patrick Sweany, which focuses on voice, mid, and highs. I detected no bias toward lows, and the mids, highs were crisp. These phones, remember, were marketed for accuracy, not as "beats killers", and I am not disappointed.
There are a number of heavy hitter reviewers that agree with me so I would have to say they are real scientists
I ordered an aftermarket cable to replace the short cable that comes with the phones, the one without the Vol control.
And my headphone amp will be here tomorrow night (FiiO E12 Mont Blanc Portable Headphone Amplifier ).
One caveat : I expect these phones to sound even better with a CD since the lousy compression of Pandora or Amazon MP3's should not be used to review headphones.
Then, there gotta be a difference between S3 and N2/N3/S4. I would not be surprised that starting with N2 Samsung "aligned" poles to work with apple in-line remote. I can tell you with 100% certainty that every single headphone I tested (check out my signature link to all my reviews on XDA, also a sticky in this accessories forum section) with iDevice in-line remote worked perfectly with my Note 2 and also with S4 when I had that one for review from Verizon. Volume didn't work, but multi-function play/pause/call button did.
Regarding resistor values, take a look at this link. They go over in high details about it: http://www.instructables.com/id/Galaxy-Nexus-and-others-headset-remote-with-medi/

And, NONE of these apps, neither yours nor mine will allow iDevice volume control on in-line remote with Android phone > 4.x. There is a workaround from the app to get volume control working on Android 2.x devices, but it doesn't work on 4.x.

[Review] HTC Bluetooth 3.0 Stereo Headphones (BH- S600) Uncompressed Audio

Hello guys
The purpose of this post is to share with you guys my recent purchase The HTC Bluettoh 3.0 Stereo Headphones. These are the official ones from HTC made for our phones. Those with Sense 4.0 and above and phones with Bluetooth 3.0 and above. What makes these different from other bluetooth heaphones is the fact that they use Bluetooth 3.0 which is a huge advancement meant from Bluetooth v2.1 Enhanced Data Rate. This newer version allows more data to be transferred at a time (wider bandwidth) and HTC has taken advantage of this by providing uncompressed audio with these bluetooth heaphones. The sound quality is so much better. v3.0 is more battery efficient as well than the previous generation. The bluetooth headphone clip allows you to use your own headphones as well!
I have made video review below
Pictures of the device and part of the manual are attached to this post for your viewing pleasure
Official Product Link: http://www.htc.com/au/accessories/htc-bluetooth-stereo-headphones/#overview
actually, it's not uncompressed audio. It uses Apt-x codec from CSR which is a cd-quality audio compression technology. There aren't many phones that actually have that codec. HTC One series and galaxy s3 are the ones that pops into my mind. Others (the ones that don't have apt-x) will sound like Bluetooth 2.1 edr no mather which version of Bluetooth they use.
Here is a list of headphones with aptx codec support, you'll see HTC is listed there too.

Are you suggesting that these sound crisp and clean? I only ask because I stream music via bluetooth quite a bit whether it be to my Yamaha receiver or my head unit in my truck and because of the low bitpool setting in Sense I get a lot of crackling on the high end. AOSP this is not an issue. Only in Sense.
So my question is...How if HTC hasn't fixed the bluetooth bitpool issue in the software can any bluetooth device stream the high quality?
i ordered the ikross bluetooth stereo receiver, they are quite good and much cheaper they go for about 26 dollars

Thanks you very much news, I think his headphones low dive deep, clean and full, flexible and intensity, slow feeling. Good high frequency extension, delicate and supple and housing design is also very good

You can actually use any headsets for jogging and especially walking. Just depends how much wire and bulk you are willing to put up with. Personally, I have the LG Tone+ headset. They sound great and dont make you feel like you are tied to something. They are actually a very practical setup. Any way. Those are my thoughts.

Hi,
Is the mic in the headset or is there a mic on the unit as well?
ie could I use a standard headset without a mic and still talk?

it's uncompressed but who cares? it seems those use apt-x lossless codec.

I picked up one of these on the back of this review, and I have to say, I'm really impressed. I got i it mainly for running with, but I've found myself just using it for everything. In the car, at work, - the battery life is really good, and the drain on the phone really in negligible.
My one complaint... I nearly lost my phone in the gym, cause I left it at the rower I was using, but the range is so good ( around 20m without any loss of audio ) I ended up having to backtrack my whole circuit to find it
I cannot believe they did not include a mic in the clip. It really limits your use of alternative headphones/earphones.

It does have a mic in the clip, can't post a link so check the HTC website for details.
I have this as well. I have to say that for a BT tranceiver, it impresses me so much. My only complain is that I can't really monitor the battery capacity in this thing. But at least it will notify me with that robotic female voice that my "battery is low". However, battery life is good.
I use it when I'm travelling because I don't really like brandishing my One in public transport (it's very unsafe to show off your phone here in Indonesia) as it allows me to control my music wirelessly.
I pair this to some other devices as well, like my laptop so that I can use my hifi system to amplify my laptop using aux cable. I don't use the aux cable directly because it's too far to where I usually sit and enjoy my movies.
All in all, I am satisfied with this product.

Because of that sentence, I have bought this device. But NO, it doesn't have the mic in the clip.
Now I am sad and angry I didn't go for a Sony or Samsung.
I have a MW600 at home, which worked perfectly, but last month the clip lost the suspension thingy so I cannot clip it to my shirt anymore... And that's why I decided to buy this one.
But bummer, you cannot use any headphones. You must pick the ones that have the microphone on. And hence, the device is not useful for other stuff, like in-car use and such...
Otherwise, sound is good, can connect to my mac and phone at the same time and can charge it while using it. Really a shame HTC did not put a mic on the clip...
I had these other bluetooth headphones in mind:
1) Sony SBH20
2) Samsung HS3000
and of course
3) Sony MW600
Good info sudkcoce. I am also thinking of buying this but do not like the earbuds. I need something that will stay on my head. Earbuds to me have always been a fad/gimmick. Can you post if any other aftermarket headphones with mics and preferably ear clips or dome speakers that are compatible with this bluetooth device? Maybe if you have others from friends try them and let us know. For now will be considering the other devices you listed for my HTC One.

I have waterproof earphones by Monster designed for iOS and they work perfectly with the bluetooth clip. Any Headphones/ earphones will work with this as long as they have a 3.5mm jack. Of those headphones have a play pause button on the centre it will work as well. The other buttons may not
I've had these things since February(a nice gift from HTC) and I love it. I don't use it as headphones though when I'm home. I have an aux cable going into my surround sound and I have hooked the Bluetooth dongle onto that Aux cable. Streaming the music crisply, clearly, and perfectly through my system.

HTC 10 Audio Thread

Hi all,
Just wanted to put a thread together to talk around the audio capabilities of the HTC 10. From what I can see, the audio is split up into a couple of different areas:
1) Good quality internal hardware (DAC and separate amps for speakers and earphone),
2) Powerful two way speaker setup,
3) Better than normal earphones to take advantage of the hardware, and
4) Good quality software with the Personal Audio Profile System.
5) There is also Airplay support for those with 3rd party airplay speakers.
What hardware are people currently using (earphones, headphones, portable amps, portable usb DAC's)? When the phone is released, it will be good to get peoples impressions and reviews. Also to understand how different hardware affects those experiences (ie. different earphones work better or worse with this phone)??? Also, could this phone be good enough to take you away from dedicated hardware you might have (proper portable music players)?
One thing that I have noted which I haven't seen noted anywhere else is the Personal Audio Profile System being the same as what Aumeo has/is coming out with with their device (click here).
I personally have a couple of pairs of AKG over ear headphones and a pair of Flare R2Pro in-ear phones. Once I get my HTC, I will compare them with the hi-res ear-phones they come with and share my thoughts.
Open questions:
1) What DAC's are being used? What is inbuilt from Qualcomm or specialist 3rd party hardware?
2) What type of 3.5mm connector is being used (AHJ or OMTP), we believe AHJ based on previous HTC phones but could do with confirming)

I currently have a couple of AKG over ears which I can't drive directly from my LG G4 without having a portable amp in the middle. I also have a pair of Flare R2Pro in ear phones that are quite hard to drive. Can't wait to test these out with the 10 when it comes out!!!

The 10 recognizes that you have plugged (wired) earphones into the jack and offers you two options for customization, a 'quick question' method and a more detailed method that requires listening to tones on left then right in different frequency ranges. You then have the option to 'save' the audio profile for those earphones. If you plug a different set of earphones in, the device recognizes it and offers you to use the existing profile or create a new one (you can store multiple profiles). This does not work with BT earphones, by the way.
The sound is superior to anything I've ever heard on any audio device. It can make cheap earphones sound good (although I recommend at least midrange earphones), and with decent earphones (I use a Shure pair) it's terrific.

That's awesome news that it does this for wired earphones!
Which pair of Shure earphones do you use? And other than these headphones, have you had a chance to try them with any other different sets of earphones?? Have you had a chance to try them with any over ear headphones, ones that might be harder to drive?
Whilst I have your attention. Have you had a play around with different audio formats / qualities? MP3 vs 24bit FLAC to see how much of a difference this makes on this setup?

Ravi

I don't drive with earphones on (that's illegal here).
I have used the Personal Audio Profiles on 3 different pairs of earphones; a test set supplied with the test phone, Shure e3c's and an over-the-ear Audio-Technica pair. The Shure's and the test earphones are the best. The test earphones are my current daily (and may well be what comes in the box for some models, but I don't know because they don't tell us).
How do the speakers sound? As good as HTC One M7/8/9? Better?

Sorry, to clarify when I say 'harder to drive' I mean over ear headphones that have a higher impedance. In this case, on other less powerful music players (or other phones), the headphones sound quiet even at max volume.

Now that the embargo has lifted, I presume we will start seeing more in depth reviews and those should hopefully include more detailed audio tests.
I use a fiio e12 to amp my current phone (LG G4). Nothing fancy but pretty sure the HTC 10 will do much better than that setup now. :victory:

Me too! I own a pair of mid-to-top range RHA T10 and I am really anticipating how these will sound with the HTC 10. I am a audiophile and the sound quality is really important to me.
My last two phone's have been the HTC M8 and LG G4. I have found that I use my phone less for music now that I'm using the G4 than the M8 and its because I just enjoy it less. Can't wait to hear how these sound with a good pair of earphones.
Audio Jack
Does anyone know what kind of audio jack standard the HTC 10 will use? Is it AHJ or OMTP?
Then i'll know if I can use the inline controls of my RHA T20i's as currently with my HTC m8.
Edit: Btw - I strongly advise using the Neutron app if you want high-end music. Already supports FLAC but last update also added DSD support for the SACD fanatics

Hopefully USB Audio works as well! Have they mentioned that at all?

Is the audio upconversion/upsampling BS something that can be disabled from settings?
I am happy with the sound quality of the 10 through the speakers as well as through the jack
What type of DAC is in the HTC 10? Because just amping the Qualcomm native DAC won't result in clean awesome audio, just louder. I'm hoping is cirrus/Wolfson or Ess Sabre premium DAC's

Best Budget Wireless Earbuds: QCY Q29 Wireless Earbuds
Bluetooth earbuds have gained popularity over past few years and we have seen truly wireless earbuds from Samsung but it wasn't until the Apple released AirPods which made the untethered Bluetooth earbuds mainstream. While Samsung's Gear IconX failed to gain popularity the Apple's tooth brush looking AirPods have seen positive response from Apple users. Though AirPods costs more than $100 and sound quality isn't the best so the average consumer might not be able to justify the cost. But as technology evolves we see new companies trying their hands at untethered truly wireless Bluetooth earbuds. Not many of these companies make good earbuds but I have found the best budget friendly truly wireless Bluetooth earbuds.
Let me introduce you to the QCY Q29 truly wireless Bluetooth earbuds. Q29's are similar to AirPods and Gear IconX as they're they’re two independent earpieces that can be used together (stereo) or separately (mono), depending on your needs. The audio quality in these earbuds have surpassed that of AirPods and the price definitely puts them in spotlight for best budget-centric wireless Bluetooth earbuds.
Audio
The audio quality is surprisingly good and surpassed my exceptions. I have been using the wired Bluetooth Jaybird Bluebird X for over 2 years and was satisfied with audio quality from Q29. If you ever used Jaybirds then you would know that they have one of the best audio quality in the market for Bluetooth earbuds. The call audio quality has been good as there were no complaints from callers. Since the microphone is exposed its tricky to use it in windy situation. Overall I love the audio quality of the Q29 earbuds.
The Case
These earbuds comes with a case that doubles as a charger which holds 220 mAh of battery and can charge your earbuds for up to 24 hours. This charging case is small enough to fit in your pockets or purses and can be charged using any micro usb cable.
The Design
The earbuds have owl design that looks premium and comes in two color grey and white. They do stick out a bit from your ears but if you have long hair or wear hoodie they aren't visible. Please watch the video review to see it yourself. There is a small led that will indicate status of the earbuds. There is also a voice assistance to indicate paring mode or incoming calls. Both of the earbuds are equipped with microphone allowing you to use either one of them as mono headset. Its very simple to pick up and end the call with one click of the button. As far as design goes I have no complain as the battery compliments its size and they do fit snug. But I would suggest using Comply foam ear tips as it will make the audio quality superior.
Connectivity
Connecting Q29 to your Bluetooth enabled device is pretty simple and takes 30 second. The Bluetooth range is also quite good as it comes with Bluetooth 4.1 technology. If for some reason your earbuds are not inter connected please follow the below guide to connect right and left earbuds with each other.
1.Please restart the Bluetooth on your phone and clean up the previous connected between the phone and the Q29.
2.Turn off both R and L earbud, press both function buttons as the same time and hold about 10 seconds, until the white light on. Waite for 3-5 seconds, the light will turn white and red and you will hear the warning tone "right channel/left channel" after this.
*Please keep clicking these two buttons until you heard that warning, only if they have matched, the L will connect automatically.
3.Turn off the L earbud, then turn on your Bluetooth and paring R earbud first with your phone.
4.Turn on your L earbud, hold the L earbud into paring mode, It will paring with the R earbud and the phone automatically.
This process is also apply to connecting with Android phone, and please note that turn off you iPhone Bluetooth function when you want to connect the earbuds with Android devices.
Conclusion
These earbuds have been my daily drivers ever since December and I have no complaint about it. The audio quality and connectivity is great. I will be honest here I was not expecting the earbuds to be good as I had set my bar high since I have been using Jaybirds. But I was pleasantly surprised with overall performance from these earbuds and they have successfully retired my Jaybirds. I am sure they will replace your daily drivers as they are on sale currently and from the special coupon in video description you will be able to get these for under $50.
Please let me know if you have any question.
Comply tip type
Thanks for your review. I'm now enjoying them as my first foray into wireless headphones. You mentioned replacing the standard tips with Comply. What type are compatible with these? I have some for other headphones but they're too small to fit the Q29s.
That is a great topic but I have seen that there is a new upgraded earbuds QCY Q29 Pro. I have noticed that they are now BT 4.2 and they have small other improvements and new BT chip. Can anyone make a comparison of both and say if the old model Q29 is better or the new one Q29 Pro?

I bought Q29 pro and that are awesome. Couldn't do a comparison as I don't own the earlier version. When I am not using my Parrot zik 2.0 these are the go to headphones (of course, couldn't compare with Zik which has more rounded sound) . More importantly the mic is good too and my callers haven't complained so far. These are very good.,though some haven't felt the same about Q29 minis.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk
I also have bought Q29 Pro. The sound is awesome and when I walk the people really do not complain. The only thing I do not like is that they can't stay into my ears and when I chew or yawn they fell.
I also bought these earphones, and they are great. But I noticed that if I store them in the battery case, they get charged, and when the case battery is completely discharged by charging the earphones, the earphones turn on and they stay on until they also discharge. So then both batteries are empty. It appears that when the case battery is empty, the contacts to the earphones stop working, so the earphones think they have been taken out of the case and turn on automatically, even though they are still in the case.
Did anyone else notice this?

How to differentiate between pro and non pro version ?
I don't think looking outside anyone could see the difference. When you receive the package see the booklet. The Pro model is with Bluetooth 4.2.
Good afternoon, I bought a month ago the headphones QCY q29 pro. They worked well, and yesterday one right earpiece fell silent and did not turn on any more. I charged the headphones in the box, but the right earpiece still does not turn on. It does not light a bulb. What should I do?
Try to hold the button longer it might be the button the problem. If you could return them for change. They have warranty.
I just received mine a couple days ago and felt that the volume is too low. Could barely hear the music when I'm on a train / bus. The product doesn't even have a proper website to hope that they will increase the volume in the future firmware update. .
I wonder if only mine or it is built to have a low volume? I'm looking for a way to increase the volume, perhaps volume tweaking through a third-party app? I disabled the Absolute Volume setting in the developer mode, but that didn't help

Did you manage to get your issue sorted?
I just wanted to share that my unit's volume seems more than adequate. In fact, I have to keep it at less than 1/3 of max.
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:29 AM ----------
Reaching out to other users of these earbuds -- Do any of you experience frequent drop outs with them? Paired with my google pixel 1st gen, I often get drop-outs. And I mean very often, like every few minutes, it would momentarily lose the signal. It would only be for a moment, but as you can probably imagine, listening to music or podcasts are quite unsatisfactory.
On a lark, I decided to pair them with my Lenovo P8 tablet and the experience was a-ok. I only ever experienced a drop out when I moved too far from the tablet, like 6-9 meters away!
Maybe some of you might have an idea as what's going on?

No, the volume is still quite low for me. I think it's probably from the phone (Note 8). I gave them to my son.
I'm also experiencing the same frequent drop out, mostly with the left piece. I read that many are experiencing the same issue. I figured that it's probably the cons. Can't complain much since it's very cheap
Thanks for getting back to me @bankir, and sharing your experience with it.
Are they cutting out Sound??
Do the buds cut out sometimes. I have galaxy buds and they are cutting off nonstop so i am thinking to buy a new ones.

Headphone Sound Quality ?

Hi guys,
I've been reading contradicting opinions on sound quality from headphones output for this device (adapter actually). How would you rate it in terms of loudness and overall sound quality? Also, do you find it inconvenient to use in any way?
Thanks,
g

i dont believe thats contradicting opinions... i tested 3 or 4 handsfree (xiaomi noise cancellation usb-c, sony mdr nc-31 em and other cheapest) and i did a comparation with xperia (z3 and z5) and sound is more natural on xiaomi; loud is it enough (if u dont like ,u can root and increase manual the volume until u can damage ur ears)...is a very good phone about sound
Thanks 7tky. What I meant by contradicting, is that some reviewers claim that sound from wired headphones is awesome, and some claim it's crap. That's why I wanted to hear opinions from people that actually own and use this phone.

I'd say sound from this phone is pretty damn good, and GSMarena's tests confirm that. The phone can power pretty big headphones too. It powers Sennheiser HD6XX's pretty well and those are 300ohm cans. Obviously not close to as clear as a dedicated DAP/Amp combo but still impressive that it can power such headphones to near uncomfortable volume. Also according to a review that I can't seem to find anymore, the phone outputs analag signal from the USB-C port so the dongle doesn't have a DAC and Amp in it. All it is doing is turning the USB-C port into a 3.5mm jack which probably explains the capability to power my Sennheiser's.
Yup, I looked into this myself. I had a DAC and AMP combo for my old Moto Nexus 6 (I wasn't happy with the sound quality of the jack). This phone is surprisingly nice. I ended up buying a few extra USB C headphone adapters straight from Google (the official ones for the the Pixels were $9 when I got them). I haven't needed my DAC and AMP since switching.
And from what I've seen the DAC is internal on this phone (as opposed to the Pixel 2 which needs the DAC to be in the dongle). Idk if that allows the port to send more power straight to the headphones or not. But I'm happy.
I thought I would get annoyed by the dongle, but I ended up just ordering a few of the Google ones and keeping them on my headphones.
Plus, Viper4Android works fine for me for some additional tuning of audio (I'm using AOSP ROMs though, not MIUI, not sure if it works in MIUI).
Keep in mind I just use some Klipsch earbuds (R6, X11, and AS-5i), nothing that requires a crazy amount of power to run.
Hope this helps.
Ok, I bought the phone and tested it for a while now, so thought I might share my experience here...
With global rom phone came with (unfortunately, I don't know the version), sound quality was great, but volume was low. Further, it had a weird bug - when I was listening to music and notification cut trough, volume would jump much higher. I could easily recreate the bug by playing music, then going to sound settings and touching slider for ringtone/notification volume, then back to music. Volume would jump higher every time. Some googling reviled that lots of people experienced similar volume jumping bugs.
OTA update (again, I don't know to which miui version) fixed this, but volume was still relatively low. When I say this, I'm comparing it to my previous devices. I'm not trying to fry my ears, though it's always nice to have the option as some music is simply mastered to much lower volume, especially older stuff.
Now I'm on lineage and volume bust is just what miui was missing - few notches higher. I listen modern pumped-up stuff 2 or 3 steps below max, and crank it up to max for very low volume old stuff. Perfect balance for me.
I guess tweaking the correct config file would adjust volume limit on miui. If anyone knows how to do that, please share, it would be much appreciated.
If someone's curious about it, I'm using zero audio carbo tenore earphones.
My audioquest Dragonfly usb DAC stopped working after a MIUI upgrade on my mix 2 since the summer. That is, the phone recognises the DAC but the sound quality light stays red (instead of say, indigo) to indicate no signal.. Updating to MIUI 10 made no difference. I've confirmed it works with the 2S running Android 8 opr 1.70623.032 - My Mix 2 has opr 1.70623.027 and he meeting if that's a difference or if anyone has similar issues of a USB digital audio converter not working on their Mix 2?

I'm interested in answer to this question too. Have you tried messing with developer options? Is the problem miui related ; did someone test on linage / aosp based roms?
...anyone tried this thing?

Is the google dongle more sturdy? i have a Brainwavz HM5 which have a thick cable and the flimsy cable in the dongle supplied with the mi mix 2s feels like it will break any second from the weight of the cable on my HM5.
i skipped the original adapter and buy a new adapter(it's a dac hidizs sonata hd )
and use with my earphones is 1more triple driver.
no comment for that, oh i just forgot that, 1 word - perfect :v
