[Q] Omnia 7 Poor Audio?

Is it me or is the audio quality from the omnia poor? or is it the headphones which are supplied with the handset? i wanted to try some headphones from a shop but they wouldnt let me...hygiene issues. anyone else have this problem. if headphones are the cause which pair are recommended no more than £30 for in ear.

I am very satisfied with the sound of Zune on my Optimus 7.
I suppose that with Zune all WP7 devices will approximately have the same sound quality.
The Omnia 7 is one of the best WP7 device, so I think you should not worry.
Try some AKG earphones for instance. I've got the K319 and they are simply amazing.

For an in-ear version, AKG K370.
Otherwise I find Sennheiser quite good also.

According to GSMArena, the Omnia has like 10dB less dynamic range than the Galaxy S, plus stereo crosstalk like hell.

The equalizer is a HTC specific feature. Since Microsoft ostensibly supplied all drivers, I suppose the DAC used in the HTC devices has a hardware DSP that can do all the SRS and EQ stuff, controlled by the HTC sound application.

I did read a review somewhere stating the Omnia sound quality is not as good as other WP7 phones.
It feels like every manufacture has cut corners on the first generation of WP7 phones.

Phone quality and earphone quality seem fine to me. The external speaker though tends to struggle only when watching videos and sometimes games with the volume set to low (about 1/30 - 3/30), what I mean by struggle is some sounds dont get through, it just mutes at some parts. Playing music seems find though.

Pick up some good in ear headphones. MEElec M6s are what I use.
And yeah, don't ever use the supplied headphones from your devices. They will almost always let you down.

thanks for the feedback guys, most appreciated. ive managed to get hold of 2 pairs of headphones (whilst at work) and they are both much better than the ones supplied with the phone, even though they are not very good headphones. the only small issue now is that the omnia 7 isnt very loud at all. are there headphones that can improve this? the ones i used were 100db.

The review (Engadget) said the supplied headphones were no good (they really were nitpicking), if you put in a good pair of headphones it will sound great.

Yes, as said before the AKG K319 definitely make the volume louder. No comparison.

Well yes, but my point was "you aren't buying a phone that doesn't have an equalizer for quality sound, are you?". If they didn't build it in they didn't really care to make it a good music player.
I know that true kosher audiophiles don't believe in equalizers and only listen to flac on Cowon players and such, but that's religious stuff I don't want to touch. In reality, with crappy headphones (and that means everything that costs less than $300), and even with decent tolerable ones an EQ is a must have thing. Especially with the kind of crap hardware OEMs like HTC and Samsung put in their phones.

Well, like I said, if you listen to lossless audio on perfect hardware using high end headphones, and also have perfect hearing - sure, you don't need an EQ. With mp3s on HTC and Samsung phones it's a must have feature. It won't make miracles and won't make those phones decent players but can at least make the sound somewhat tolerable.

Not sure how you work that out, given it makes an engine far more efficient, however that's a debate for a different type of forum!

[Review] HTC Bluetooth 3.0 Stereo Headphones (BH- S600) Uncompressed Audio

Hello guys​
The purpose of this post is to share with you guys my recent purchase The HTC Bluettoh 3.0 Stereo Headphones. These are the official ones from HTC made for our phones. Those with Sense 4.0 and above and phones with Bluetooth 3.0 and above. What makes these different from other bluetooth heaphones is the fact that they use Bluetooth 3.0 which is a huge advancement meant from Bluetooth v2.1 Enhanced Data Rate. This newer version allows more data to be transferred at a time (wider bandwidth) and HTC has taken advantage of this by providing uncompressed audio with these bluetooth heaphones. The sound quality is so much better. v3.0 is more battery efficient as well than the previous generation. The bluetooth headphone clip allows you to use your own headphones as well!

actually, it's not uncompressed audio. It uses Apt-x codec from CSR which is a cd-quality audio compression technology. There aren't many phones that actually have that codec. HTC One series and galaxy s3 are the ones that pops into my mind. Others (the ones that don't have apt-x) will sound like Bluetooth 2.1 edr no mather which version of Bluetooth they use.

Are you suggesting that these sound crisp and clean? I only ask because I stream music via bluetooth quite a bit whether it be to my Yamaha receiver or my head unit in my truck and because of the low bitpool setting in Sense I get a lot of crackling on the high end. AOSP this is not an issue. Only in Sense.
So my question is...How if HTC hasn't fixed the bluetooth bitpool issue in the software can any bluetooth device stream the high quality?

You can actually use any headsets for jogging and especially walking. Just depends how much wire and bulk you are willing to put up with. Personally, I have the LG Tone+ headset. They sound great and dont make you feel like you are tied to something. They are actually a very practical setup. Any way. Those are my thoughts.

The mic is not built in onto the bluetooth device, your earphones will have to have a mic

it's uncompressed but who cares? it seems those use apt-x lossless codec.

I picked up one of these on the back of this review, and I have to say, I'm really impressed. I got i it mainly for running with, but I've found myself just using it for everything. In the car, at work, - the battery life is really good, and the drain on the phone really in negligible.
My one complaint... I nearly lost my phone in the gym, cause I left it at the rower I was using, but the range is so good ( around 20m without any loss of audio ) I ended up having to backtrack my whole circuit to find it

I cannot believe they did not include a mic in the clip. It really limits your use of alternative headphones/earphones.

I have this as well. I have to say that for a BT tranceiver, it impresses me so much. My only complain is that I can't really monitor the battery capacity in this thing. But at least it will notify me with that robotic female voice that my "battery is low". However, battery life is good.
I use it when I'm travelling because I don't really like brandishing my One in public transport (it's very unsafe to show off your phone here in Indonesia) as it allows me to control my music wirelessly.
I pair this to some other devices as well, like my laptop so that I can use my hifi system to amplify my laptop using aux cable. I don't use the aux cable directly because it's too far to where I usually sit and enjoy my movies.
All in all, I am satisfied with this product.

Because of that sentence, I have bought this device. But NO, it doesn't have the mic in the clip.
Now I am sad and angry I didn't go for a Sony or Samsung.
I have a MW600 at home, which worked perfectly, but last month the clip lost the suspension thingy so I cannot clip it to my shirt anymore... And that's why I decided to buy this one.
But bummer, you cannot use any headphones. You must pick the ones that have the microphone on. And hence, the device is not useful for other stuff, like in-car use and such...
Otherwise, sound is good, can connect to my mac and phone at the same time and can charge it while using it. Really a shame HTC did not put a mic on the clip...
I had these other bluetooth headphones in mind:
1) Sony SBH20
2) Samsung HS3000
and of course
3) Sony MW600

Can you post if any other aftermarket headphones with mics and preferably ear clips or dome speakers that are compatible with this bluetooth device? Maybe if you have others from friends try them and let us know. For now will be considering the other devices you listed for my HTC One.

I am pretty sure any headphone with a built in mike will work.

I have waterproof earphones by Monster designed for iOS and they work perfectly with the bluetooth clip. Any Headphones/ earphones will work with this as long as they have a 3.5mm jack. Of those headphones have a play pause button on the centre it will work as well. The other buttons may not

I've had these things since February(a nice gift from HTC) and I love it. I don't use it as headphones though when I'm home. I have an aux cable going into my surround sound and I have hooked the Bluetooth dongle onto that Aux cable. Streaming the music crisply, clearly, and perfectly through my system.

DAC quality? (headphone audio)

Guys What is your opinion about the headphone audio quality from op3? I know audio is subjective and it depends upon your listening equipment too but nonetheless share your opinion.
P.S - I know it's not better than HTC 10 but comparison with HTC 10 would be a good reference.

I'll be getting one too, so I'll report about it. Unfortunately there aren't many, if any USB-C Portable DAC, if you wanted to use one to boost audio quality/performance.

I'm also wondering the same thing and it's basically what's holding me from buying the phone.

It uses NXP Audio Amplifier. I had the review unit and did a teardown with one of my friends. The sound quality is Good via the headphone jack but it feels quite flat. You can fix this by Using V4A Or other EQs. It uses a Dirac HD Sound too.

As said, it uses the standard snapdragon 820 audio circuit and 24bit 192 kHz built in dac. As in the S7, audio is unexceptional (exynos version has wolfson derived Dac and is better but is said to still not be up to outboard Dac/amplifier quality).
Apps like viper and power amp will not help to increase sound quality. They may make things sound different but the limitations are hardware based. If anything, they put more strain on resources. Sure, if the pretty multi coloured lights appeal, use them. Otherwise you're better off with Google standard music player or something like black player.
If audio is of utmost importance go HTC/LG or outboard dac such as dragon fly.

can you tell me how to prove whether Dirac HD Sound is there or not as there is no app also as per their website Indian one it says for speaker optimization only

Which headphones are recommended for the HTC 10?

I was lucky and got an HTC 10 with high res earbuds but now my other headphones suck except the beyerdynamic DT 770 pro but they are not for everyday use

I'm using ultimate ears triple fi 10 with headphone amplifier. Works great, but i have to put off boom sound software feature to get full range music. The bass boost with boom sound is just rubbish and kills the mids completly. So i dont really use 10's special music features unless the enhanced powered headphone jack. Besides that every 820 device should sound the same as they are using the same DAC.

HTC claimed they worked with Qualcomm to optimise the output circuitry to work with the DAC so it would be better than other implementations. I don't know how much difference it made...

What type of earphones are you looking for? In ear, on ear, over ear?

I've been very satisfied with the RHA Ma750s. If you like cheaper earpods I've tried Samsung's ear pods that are included w/ the gs6 which sound pretty good.
I've also found on bass heavy sets (in my case Bose IE2s, in your case beats tour) it helps to create an audio profile and set the first 2 frequencies to minimum, set mid to 3-4, and set the two high freqs to 9-10. This helps with the lack of treble response on bass heavy earbuds.

I recommend checking out head-fi forums for some advice, but for ear buds, I love my AKG K318s. They are open back ear buds and the have pretty fantastic clarity and openness to them for being ear buds. They are great in the mids to highs, but bass response isn't that great - depends on your music tastes. They are perfect for rock/classical/vocals stuff like that. For bassier stuff, I use a pair of V-Moda BassFreq but I dont believe either of these are made anymore. I use mostly Sennheiser Momentum over-ear and on-ears at work, and Philips SHP9500/Grado SR80 at home.

I use klipsch x12i in ears.
They're pricey but well worth it.
Came from klipsch x10i and x11i.
Once you've had a pair, you're hooked.
They sound amazing...

I use the headphones at work and there is a SIGNIFICANT sound quality difference from when I plug it into my PC vs my HTC 10. The 10 adds another dimension to the music and makes it sounds more... vibrant?

Needless to say, the results of my benchmark testing with the HTC 10 are pretty damn outstanding."

Xiaomi Piston 3's sound AMAZING for the price, which is around $12, but for best SQ you need to be careful to avoid fakes, replace the tips (included tips are rubbish), and burn them in for ~50 hrs.

I currently use the Audio-Technica ATH-CKR10 and it sounds amazing for my type of music (edm, trance, vocal trance) although they are quite expensive at around 200 your best bet is to get them from amazon and make sure its fulfilled by amazon, for some reason the other listings are always 300-600 bucks....

Ordered some Sony bluetooth over the ear headphones on Amazon prime day, work great. They were 50% off

Would you mind sharing a link of a legit seller for the Xiaomi earbuds? I tried purchasing a set last summer but got burned by eBay seller and received a knock off. One of the earbuds volume was significantly lower (almost nonexistent) than the other earbud. Would like to try out some quality hi-res earbuds, my 2013 Beats Tours are pretty disappointing in both the sound department, as well as them constantly falling out of my ears.
But as far as Headphones go, My Beats Studio 2.0's sound amazing when I Calibrate the sound profile to them. The Dolby effects "Studio" setting really helps separate the sound stage nicely. So nice, it's allowed me to fight off the itch to mess around with V4A and all the other sound mods I have run in the past, and a much nicer richer listening experience as well.

For bang for the bucks, try VSONIC GR07, despite the lame plastic chassis, it really does sound like a ~200-dollar-headphone. I like it more than my UE triple.fi, even UE900, sound-wise.

So i'm using the "Bose Soundsport" while in gym, on the bike or just walking outside. Although i'm not a big fan of Bose products i can highly recommend these because they are so damn comfortable as they are between real In-Ears and EarPods and sound excellent for their size. (way better than the High Res HTC In-Ears)
At home or while working i take my "Bowers & Wilkins P7", which were brought on a new level when i switched from HTC M7 to HTC 10!
But in the end it depends on what sound you like and the quality you use...for me it was always hard to find good headphones as i hear very different genres like Hiphop, Rock, Punk-Rock, House, Jazz etc.

i dont believe thats contradicting opinions... i tested 3 or 4 handsfree (xiaomi noise cancellation usb-c, sony mdr nc-31 em and other cheapest) and i did a comparation with xperia (z3 and z5) and sound is more natural on xiaomi; loud is it enough (if u dont like ,u can root and increase manual the volume until u can damage ur ears)...is a very good phone about sound

I'd say sound from this phone is pretty damn good, and GSMarena's tests confirm that. The phone can power pretty big headphones too. It powers Sennheiser HD6XX's pretty well and those are 300ohm cans. Obviously not close to as clear as a dedicated DAP/Amp combo but still impressive that it can power such headphones to near uncomfortable volume. Also according to a review that I can't seem to find anymore, the phone outputs analag signal from the USB-C port so the dongle doesn't have a DAC and Amp in it. All it is doing is turning the USB-C port into a 3.5mm jack which probably explains the capability to power my Sennheiser's.

Yup, I looked into this myself. I had a DAC and AMP combo for my old Moto Nexus 6 (I wasn't happy with the sound quality of the jack). This phone is surprisingly nice. I ended up buying a few extra USB C headphone adapters straight from Google (the official ones for the the Pixels were $9 when I got them). I haven't needed my DAC and AMP since switching.
And from what I've seen the DAC is internal on this phone (as opposed to the Pixel 2 which needs the DAC to be in the dongle). Idk if that allows the port to send more power straight to the headphones or not. But I'm happy.
I thought I would get annoyed by the dongle, but I ended up just ordering a few of the Google ones and keeping them on my headphones.
Plus, Viper4Android works fine for me for some additional tuning of audio (I'm using AOSP ROMs though, not MIUI, not sure if it works in MIUI).
Keep in mind I just use some Klipsch earbuds (R6, X11, and AS-5i), nothing that requires a crazy amount of power to run.

Ok, I bought the phone and tested it for a while now, so thought I might share my experience here...
With global rom phone came with (unfortunately, I don't know the version), sound quality was great, but volume was low. Further, it had a weird bug - when I was listening to music and notification cut trough, volume would jump much higher. I could easily recreate the bug by playing music, then going to sound settings and touching slider for ringtone/notification volume, then back to music. Volume would jump higher every time. Some googling reviled that lots of people experienced similar volume jumping bugs.
OTA update (again, I don't know to which miui version) fixed this, but volume was still relatively low. When I say this, I'm comparing it to my previous devices. I'm not trying to fry my ears, though it's always nice to have the option as some music is simply mastered to much lower volume, especially older stuff.
Now I'm on lineage and volume bust is just what miui was missing - few notches higher. I listen modern pumped-up stuff 2 or 3 steps below max, and crank it up to max for very low volume old stuff. Perfect balance for me.
I guess tweaking the correct config file would adjust volume limit on miui. If anyone knows how to do that, please share, it would be much appreciated.
If someone's curious about it, I'm using zero audio carbo tenore earphones.

My audioquest Dragonfly usb DAC stopped working after a MIUI upgrade on my mix 2 since the summer. That is, the phone recognises the DAC but the sound quality light stays red (instead of say, indigo) to indicate no signal.. Updating to MIUI 10 made no difference. I've confirmed it works with the 2S running Android 8 opr 1.70623.032 - My Mix 2 has opr 1.70623.027 and he meeting if that's a difference or if anyone has similar issues of a USB digital audio converter not working on their Mix 2?

I'm interested in answer to this question too. Have you tried messing with developer options? Is the problem miui related ; did someone test on linage / aosp based roms?

Yup, I looked into this myself. I had a DAC and AMP combo for my old Moto Nexus 6 (I wasn't happy with the sound quality of the jack). This phone is surprisingly nice. I ended up buying a few extra USB C headphone adapters straight from Google (the official ones for the the Pixels were $9 when I got them). I haven't needed my DAC and AMP since switching.
And from what I've seen the DAC is internal on this phone (as opposed to the Pixel 2 which needs the DAC to be in the dongle). Idk if that allows the port to send more power straight to the headphones or not. But I'm happy.
I thought I would get annoyed by the dongle, but I ended up just ordering a few of the Google ones and keeping them on my headphones.
Plus, Viper4Android works fine for me for some additional tuning of audio (I'm using AOSP ROMs though, not MIUI, not sure if it works in MIUI).

Is the google dongle more sturdy? i have a Brainwavz HM5 which have a thick cable and the flimsy cable in the dongle supplied with the mi mix 2s feels like it will break any second from the weight of the cable on my HM5.

i skipped the original adapter and buy a new adapter(it's a dac hidizs sonata hd )
and use with my earphones is 1more triple driver.
