Laggy gesture navigation experience - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Does anyone else have really laggy or just buggy gesture navigation experience on MIUI 10.0.40? I tried updating, switching launchers, keyboards and so on but no, It really seems that the way I use it is the problem. I do a really fast fling and let go immediately and that's the part when its starts lagging. When I open the app switcher it's fine, but going home is really the main problem.
It's really irritating because these gestures are not all that bad but they just simply cannot lag or be buggy.

same here and I dont know what I can do.

goikg home always been laggy.

if you have root, install kernel adiutor and in the cpu section go to Little core tunables and set "boost" setting to "1". I enabled this switch in AOSP ROM, definatle feels the difference.

not much,
the Little cores frequency distribution before modification was Deep Sleep 90%, 633Mhz 10%.
Now after the mod Deep Sleep is the same but 633Mhz is 1% and 1400Mhz is 9%

Did some test but it really seems that the way I use it is the problem. Oh well

I don't feel any lags in 10.0.6
Even full-screen gesture was working fine in 10.0.4

try turning off MIUI gestures and use Fluid Gestures (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fb.fluid&hl=en)
maybe it will work better for you.
Also i noticed when you turn off animation in MIUI gestures settings it work a lot faster.

I have been reporting this lag since MIUI 9 but it seems that they can't fix it.
When it happens?
When you have too many apps open in the background.
My solution?
If you clean all background apps the lag goes away, but after opening and minimizing a lot of them it starts lagging.

RipTide GP

Hi all,
I've been fiddling with RipTide GP a little bit, just wondering if anyone else has noticed a dip in fps when you set the graphics up from Default to Sharper Graphics?
I mean obviously this is to be expected but I was hoping the T3 could cope okay, what settings do you run it at and are you ROM'd or Stock?

you loose 60fps with the full resolution, thats kinda acceptable given how effects heavy the game is
i also noticed with this game the interactive governor is better but not perfect, since your are using the tilt sensor and not "interacting" with the screen as muhc
and so the governor drops the clocks sometimes
best way to play it is with minimum clock set to 1.0ghz and interactive gov
wish so wish there was a game launcher app on android where we set governor, clocks and minfrees per game

You lose a full 60fps when set to sharper Graphics?! Jeez that's alot, still as you said it is really effects heavy!
At first I thought I was getting tired and wasn't concentrating properly when playing lastnight! Now I know I was loosing a lotta fps!
Interactive Govenor seems best for most games then I think, RipTide GP, Nova 3 etc...
Still haven't set my Govenor yet as I need to install System Tuner.
A game launcher App that set up the Govenor, Clocks and minfrees would be great!, just click in and out of 'Gaming Mode' before and after you play would be amazing! Instead you need to change it all into 'Gaming Mode' and then back to defaults or loose loads of battery!

Is it best to leave it running the interactive gov? or is it best to change between Int. and OnD. govs?
Also, Task Killer... I thought I heard once that killing everything in TK is not a great idea as thememory managemnt is pretty aggressive... plus, it's got bits running in it that I'm not 100% on, should be okay to kill it all right?...
---EDIT---
Got System Tuner, how do I actually change the Govenors?

no dont use task killer
you can use supercharge which is complicated but follow my guide to save the stock minfrees and change them on the fly using script manager widgets
or simply in System Tuner auto-kill menu you can change them on the fly
rebooting will restore the stock values
as for ondemand it best to switch back for battery when ur done
all explained in my gaming guide by the wide you just have to force yourself to read it

You experience slowdowns on HOX with Riptide GP? What's wrong? I mean, on my device with graphics maxed out the game runs silky smooth, no lags of any kind. In my opinion it may very well be the best optimized game for our device. And my HOX is still locked, unrooted and not modified in any way, I'm haven't even done the tricks hamdir has suggested in his guide. I never needed, although he does provide some sound advice. I just played a match of 3 rounds, finishing first just to check. And it only at a 3% of my battery!
Is it possible that you have loaded your Sense launcher with widgets/pages/cities or have many running background tasks that may actually cause the slowdown?

frame drops are different from slow down
@ Feregorn: The game isn't slowing down I'm loosing frames, they're different.
Slow down is when everything slows down because the CPU/GPU can't cope with what they're processing and/or get bottlenecked.
Frame Drops are what happens when the game stops showing like 100fps and drops to like 40fps, so gameplay will look less 'smooth' and may appear to 'skip' a little bit.
Atleast that's my take on it, @ Hamdir, correct me if I'm wrong?

speed remains the same just the smoothness sensation lowers as the frame the rate is reducing from 60fps to 30fps or less
Mine don't lag at all
I stand corrected then...Oww guess I'll have to live with my mistake....But although it may seem that we are talking 2 different things the gist of the matter is that while playing with Riptide on my HOX I still don't experience any framedrops/slowdowns or whatever. Game apperas to me, to run silky smooth (and I'm an experienced gamer), just like GoW 3 did on the PS3. I'm talking about THAT kind of optimization. I can't understand what in the world has made the game to have on your defice such an inferior performance that it becomes noticeable.
which firmwares do you guys have?

I have the same also. Everything stock. But on the Sense homescreen, I only have 3 pages, one with the Weather clock, google search and a birthday widget, one with the full-page music widget and one with the full page calendar widget. I've also disabled autosyncing for most of the time. Maybe these are helpful in improving overall performance???

How do you try to make your Play's battery last?

When I'm not using the internet or playing games, I literally set my max speed to half stock using the OnDemand governor, I always keep WiFi off unless I'm home and keep 3G unless I check my facebook or upload an image, 3G usually reactivates then deactivates itself with MMS I believe, not exactly 100% on that, correct me if you'd like. My stock battery lasts for about 30-35 hours under constant texting plus the way I use my phone. When I play games, I set clock speed back to stock and keep 3G off, whether I overclock or not depends on the game.
The UI loses a little FPS but I'm cool with that, and onscreen keyboard response is a little sluggish but that doesn't bother me either. I might try setting my max clock a little higher and try a different governor. My ROM and Kernel are in my signature.
Never really had to "try"... on stock 2.3.4 I usually get incredible game time/usage time just from keeping auto-brightness on.
I am going pretty minimalist on widgets though; nothing but LP Sense's own widgets and a clock., so that may also contribute.

How much brightness do you keep ? is it half or more ?

I keep the bar on maximum brightness, but AFAIK, that setting is ignored by the auto brightness.
And no tweaks. TBQH, only tweaks I know how to do is maxing camera quality and spoofing R800a to be an R800i.

Thermanger Update and Myths/Fiction about Custom Roms Overheating vs Stock

Here is updated Thermanager, which could be flashed in recovery. I have made some changes after I played Asphalt game for about one hour. With this update, on performance governor the temperature never went higher than 58. And we are talking 1 hour straight. I doubt you can have that on stock. What was interesting that performance governor produced less heat than interactive, which supports my claim that when cpu jumps frequencies, it creates additional overhead.
Now, regarding myths and fiction about stock rom not overheating. There are some dudes on this forum who complain that their Z1 overheats to 70+ on custom roms when they play their beloved games; on stock, they say, there is no overheating.
Here is a short answer. You, guys, don't know what you are talking about.
Custom roms (and custom kernels) give you tools that are not available in stock. You just have to learn how to read/use them. Here is one example: some roms allow you to have internal cpu temperature on screen. Now that you have it, you watch. When it hits 70, you panic, but if you touch the back door, it will be barely warm. So, when you are on stock and without temperature reading, you think your phone is not overheating, while it can still have 65-70.
I used a modified version of M5 kernel compiled with GCC 5.2.1 Ubertc; CPU at 2457; performance governor, inteliplug balance with touch boost disabled; GPU overclocked to 600 with msm-adreno-tz idle wait 30 and workload 3; swapiness 10; enthropy 1024 read/write. That was on DU rom, but I bet the result would be the same on Jaguar and some other custom roms.
lol, that dude is Me, and I will try this, in the stock rom I can see an process running as overheat manager or something, I think it might have to do something with it. I'm sure that my device got heated very much, I didn't meant to offense but you seems to got it wrong. btw I will try this. I use Jaguar atm.
Thanks
I don't think that my phone won't reach 60 C on stock, but I like watching YouTube, so I can see how fast it warms. (I have xposed module that shows me cpu temp even on stock). And as much as I can say my phone warms faster on custom roms than on stock. No matter what governor I use.
Also all animations (like status bar showing) are kind of laggy on custom roms. I don't know it it got better in past 2 months, but last time I used custom rom my phone reached 50C even only with chrome.
Interesting thing is that this all (including animations) is not present on 3.10 kernel, but there are no usable roms at the moment with 3.10 kernel, so I have to use stock.

Overheat manager: whatever it is, all it does is throttling and thermanager does the same on custom roms. So, the trick is to throttle enough without you noticing any lags...

It's a YouTube app. Really? It's weird, maybe I'll try, but I can see the difference on battery time when I come home from school - on stock I have ~70% and on custom roms I have ~50. Anyway I'll try and report after few days.
Okay, I can say that custom roms are now ok for me when it come to battery life. I compared usual usage of mine on stock and custom roms and now it really gives me same battery life. The only change I made this time is that I used DU instead of Jaguar and this thermalmanager settings.
Though there are still two things that bother me on custom roms: laggy UI - I don't know what causes that, I tried changing lot of cpu/gpu thing to sort it out, but nothing helped. And the other one is headset connecting - I have to press and hold (for a little while) all the buttons on headset to get it recognized.
I'm returning back to stock, but I can say that now is overheating on custom roms gone.
Thank you, @optimumpro

OK. Nice to hear that about battery life and overheating. With regard to lagging: it is not cpu, but rather animations. Either disable them completely in developer options or in DU you can go to tweaks and pick and choose whatever animation you want. I just disable all animations and have absolutely no lag.

Fix quick settings and notification bar stutter and lag

Pull down quick settings, press 'edit', tap the 3 dot menu and uncheck all the boxes.
Just discovered this today. The lag used to be unbearable and was thinking about replacing the phone with a Nexus 6p or HTC 10.
Then I discovered this and the shade is completely buttery now, and plus, looks more like stock android!!
Hope this helps other people as it did to me.

You're talking about that ? (see screenshot)
I think it's a placebo effect, I do not see why some shortcuts would slow down the phone completely..
In addition the tab for brightness is very convenient to reset the automatic brightness when the phone takes time to change or remains blocked on a dim light (it's a problem on this phone I think, it's not very effective on auto brightness)
In any case I tried to see, for my part I do not see any difference, the phone has exactly the same behavior as the shortcuts is on !
I forgot the screenshot
Maybe it's different for other people. When I had those enabled, it definitely was jerky to pull down quick settings, especially using the swipe down shortcut on my launcher. Now it's really smooth for me, which is how it should be with a sd 821. Shouldn't be a challenge for it.
I did find the brightness slider useful but, and I know this sounds weird, I would happily trade those shortcuts (including 'file sharing' etc. which I never used) for a much smoother and cleaner looking notification shade (and btw I have next to 0 lag tolerance... Should have got a Pixel ?). Instead I used Nougat/Oreo Quick Settings to change it to a quick settings toggle and I think this is a good solution considering that personally I hardly ever change the brightness from auto.
Thanks for the reply, interesting how some G6s seem to lag and others don't. Also I've never had a problem with auto brightness ?

Interestingly enough, I've done the same as you.
The problem in doing this is how difficult it is to find this toggle when your brightness is EXTREMELY low and the sun is beaming in your face. Unlike having a whole row to tap on and adjust, you have to tap on one singular point on your display, and I found this frustrating.
Anyways, disabling everything in that list did help with the lag a bit. Even if it was just barely noticeable.
The improvement was more than barely noticeable for me... Made it seem like a software bug.
Having said that, I don't think it's acceptable for a company like LG to release a phone at this price that has any lag issues at all, agree? I'll have spent $674 equiv. just on the phone by the time my contract is up. Loved the phone overall, thought the lag might improve, also thought I would promptly get Oreo (being LG) which might help. None of those happened, and I ran out of time to return it. Silly me...

Maybe it depends on the version of the phone, I'm on h870
On mine auto brightness is really slow, sometimes I need to adjust myself because it is sometimes too strong or too weak compared to the situation, maybe my sensor that is badly calibrated..
Otherwise I agree, sharing files is useless and for the volume I already have the keys, so it is disabled on my side.
It is true that we see a lot of different returns depending on the users of this phone, especially on performance and autonomy, personally I'm lucky, good performance, good battery life and good focal length (2.01)

Yeah auto brightness is pretty slow to react on mine too...
I also have a European H870. It has moments of absolute fluidity out of the blue and it's awesome, and also moments of being so bogged down it's unusable. Everything else is somewhere in between. It feels like a fast phone but it doesn't feel like a OnePlus 3t, which has the same chipset. That's even after debloating the phone almost entirely. I don't really want to install a custom ROM like LOS yet, although I've heard that helps.
If your LG G6 is rooted, install a custom kernel, from Play Store try L Speed/Entropy/fstrim apps should help, if you installed a custom kernel, play using Kernel Adiutor. Settings/Developer Options/ tick on "Force GPU Rendering, Disable HW Overlays" should make the beast smoother/snappier. Install adblocker too.
This is the better solution for stuttering/lag.

h870 here, unchecking these boxes didnt make any difference.
although i have to agree that this phone is sometimes weirdly laggy while usuall being smooth most of the time
Thx for letting us know about that menu! Those settings don't produce stuttering for me thankfully, but I disabled them anyway and enabled the volume slider which I love to have there
nice!
The only thing that creates slight stutters (very rare though) on my Orea LG G6 is when I use the ported pixel 2 live wallpapers.

How to improve battery life

Hi
I just switched to LOS and then to DU and i get the same battery life as Stock 8.1/ 9 preview
I'd like an advise to improuve my battery life
I think about a custom Kernel but i want an advise from you, witch one to choose
Franko Kernel
CLANG 7.0] Flash Kernel
exNoShadez-eas
Pixel XL ElementalX 3.07
Thank's in advance
Elemental x, Use a kernel manager to lower Max clock speeds, but not so much that the device starts to lags.
Turn off adaptive brightness, manually adjust it.
Try giving the app "L speed" a try. Its developed by a member here in our forums and has a ton of options. It also has present profiles such as "battery" or "performance".
If you use alot of main stream bigger apps (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, others) you can try giving greenify a shot. Even the free version has powerful tool.
Make sure that Bluetooth and wifi scanning while off is disabled.
Use quicktiles Oreo to add some toggleable quick tiles to your status bar. Add toggles for things like sync, gps, nfc, location, etc. Radios are power hungry, keep whatever you can off.

The problem with lowering max clock speeds is that they don't stay locked. Have you lowered them, exited out of the application and then tried to play a game or something ? For me the speeds don't stay locked.

Make sure you hit the little option to the side, it locks it and persist at reboots. I honestly selected the Max speed during install, so I didn't have to mess with the app.
