I would really appreciate any feedback. My OnePlus 6 battery temp was always 30 C to 35 C most of the time. But on my pixel XL 3 it gets hot pretty fast like 39 Celsius and with some regular use of just browsing apps gets to like 40 to 45 C and charging it gets to like 48 C. My question is what's your battery temp usually? Does my phone have a heating problem in your opinion? Thanks again for any feedback

I like it more, I never even cared about the camera until I saw the pictures on the pixel they look really good, i like the animated pictures feat where the pic moves. I like the simple interface of the pixel, I didn't mind going from OnePlus gestures to pixel gestures, I always mess up and hit back on accident with OnePlus gestures. I like the screen vibration alot. But my OnePlus doesn't get as hot, and so far the 6 has better battery life, which is weird cuz the pxl3 has a bigger battery. But I'm hoping that with some updates it will all get worked out. But it's not all about an extra half hour of battery life and a really fast ui, I like features a lot, so I'm pretty happy with this the new phone. I just hope mine doesn't have a heating issue.

Just checked my Pixel 3 which had been idle in AOD mode, and battery was at 21 C. Played streaming video for 10 min and it went up to 27. I haven't paid attention previously so can't say what's normal on my phone. Will check it periodically and report back anything significant, but my usage is minimal, and it's a 3 not an XL, so may not be that helpful.

When charging what's the highest its gotten for you? If you got the time for another reply. Thanks
I have a OP6 and currently use my P3XL as my main phone, I didn't notice any huge difference between the temperatures of the phones... I haven't looked at battery temp though. I'm guessing with the wireless charging coils packed in over the battery the P3 might not cool as efficiently as the OP6. No throttling issues for me though, and nothing bothersome in terms of temperature.
Also are you charging wirelessly or cabled? I find wireless charging creates more heat, probably due to more inefficient charging process and extra energy being lost as heat.
To extend the life your battery try and keep it between 20-80% on any phone with a li-ion battery.

I am using both, but yeah when I'm charging wirelessly with the dock, it reaches 50 celcius. Thanks for the tips
I found my pixel 3xl more heat comparing to my other phones OnePlus 6 and mate 20 pro specially after 10 minutes videos call.
Battery life mate 20 pro is the best ever then OnePlus 6 then pixel 3 xl.

40
Which is normal
I think throttling begins at 80 degrees C
UPDATE.
I got a replacement, that has fixed my heat issue, the other phone was running hot. The phone reset once on the dock, & would reach temps of 53 celcius while charging on the dock, & about 45 celcius with just regular use. I looked at the manufacturing date on this phone and it was manufactured in late October my other phone was manufactured in November so maybe the November phones got the problem
How do you check for manufacturing dates on pixel 3 xl?
Anyway, my oneplus 6t is way cooler than my pixel 3 xl..
Playing games on the 6t only increase the battery temp to 35c, while it's up to 42-43c on the pixel 3 xl resulting in throttling while playing games on the pixel..

Yeah the OnePlus 6 does have a good temperature but it's so ugly compare to this by burnt pixel. I ate too thrilled that the pixel gets a little hotter as well. but my first pixel got really hot and I sent it back and got a new one that didn't get his hot now my pixel only reaches 40 c when it's charging. And when I'm just using it 35. I don't play games though so I'm not sure . It's pretty awesome phone though I would keep it

Does this phone feel warm in your hands most of the time? (Except when idle). Mine is warm. Not hot, but warm every time I use it. Should I be concerned? Or is this a feature for coming winter? It is a replacement. And the first one was mostly the same actually.
If we consider the performance of this mobile and compare it with a lap top or table PC I think it outstanding how cool this mobile runs.
Remember there is no cooling system. Now look at the cooling systems on similar devices.
All flag ship uber mobile devices can get warm under load. I have owned hundreds of mobiles and all powerful models run warm when pushed.
My Samsung Galaxy S6Edge plus runs warmer than my note 7 and my Samsung galaxy S6 ran even warmer.
No cause for concern.
Ensure you only use Samsung chargers designed for the Note 7 to charge the Note 7. NEVER charge any phone using a third party charger.
Enjoy your lovely Note 7, incredible device.

Thanks for your opinion. However, it is warm not only under heavy use, just when browsingy reading news, checking email... normal use. Just feels warm in my hands, that is all.

If you have a genuine concern you should return your device to your store and request they examine it. Cant lose a thing by doing that if it puts your mind at rest.

The phone's temperature is a measure of how fast the battery is draining. Expected energy consumption depends on what apps and services you may have running in the background, in addition to what's actually on your screen at the moment. So you should look at the battery-usage data (in Settings|Device Maintenance|Battery) and see what apps are responsible.
When my phone is idle, it is cool to the touch and the battery temperature is around 27C.
Nothing special, just apps that I am mostly using. No apparent drain.
Mine is cool when idle too, but warm the rest of the time.

Use "GSam battery monitor" and see what temperatures the battery reaches when you are using it. It should feel more warm than other phones cause its made out of metal/glass.
That is a brilliant explanation about the glass thing, why didn't I figure this out? So it kind of is a feature for winter .
Well I used another app and battery shows at about 34 degrees C, CPU shows around 45 degrees. The highest I saw for a second was over 60 degrees (CPU) when downloading apps.
Don't forget that the screen also produces a fair amount of heat...especially when the brightness is cranked up.
Sent from my SM-G928F using XDA-Developers mobile app
I considered that. But strangely it feels warmer on the top half of the phone.
If you dont tell us the tempreture how do you expect any useful feedback?
We accepct C or F
Umm, I did, bottom post on page 1.
mine is actually mostly "cold". although it's rooted, debloated and i'm using the hydra kernel. Battery life is amazing...
I've never had mine hot, even when playing games it's cool. When charging, it's cool. I'm going to try a stress test and take some readings see what happens I think. But I'm not worried about it heating up a bit.

I believe this is a little to warm for minor task such as download apps, browsing, text messaging...etc, though I also think these temps shouldn't worry you as long as 60 is the highest you see under full load just my 2 cents.
You're missing a really important detail, the ambient temperature. You should measure the difference between ambient temperature and the battery temperature. Comparing the battery temperature across different devices in different parts of the word is not accurate or fair.

True, its been that hot here this year, 43, that even the chickens laid hard boiled eggs!

my n7 v1 was warm and the battery lasted forever.
my n7 v2 is noticeably hot, and the battery drains 20% faster, which seems to be the most common complaint in the news.
Samsung has not addressed this. The phone was much hotter when first setup, and after a few hours seems to settle.
I'm sure rooted, and debloated its a little cooler.
I started another thread that has yielded zero useful information so I thought I would be very explicit this time about what I am looking for. I'm trying to figure out if I should RMA my device or not. My device is currently 98F in a 70F room and I'm doing nothing but typing this message. This seems like a high temperature to me but for all I know it's normal for this device. If other people who use battery monitor apps that include device temperature readings could let me know what temp their Pixel XL is operating at I would appreciate it and it will help me decide whether I should RMA this device or not. Thanks in advance if anyone actually responds with useful information.

That's the same temp as mine after conversion. Maybe that's a normal temp for this phone. Thanks for the response!
The Pixel is designed really differently than my previous phones so I'm having trouble figuring out what is normal on a Pixel. The CPU frequencies that this phone operates at would result in a significant performance lag on my previous phone, for example, but with the Pixel they result in the phone running very smooth and fast.
I have not messed with my frequencies, I'm running OctOS with the Elemental kernel at whatever it ships at.
so I went ahead and let my phone sit in my center console on my way home. for some reason the sun cooks this area of my truck and it's hot to touch even with the AC. After my trip home in 103F weather it was at 42C and did not shut down (I was streaming music over bluetooth from amazon music)
Idle : 30 - 35 C (phone goes below 30 C only when not used for more than 15-20 mins in a very cool room).
Medium Load: 35-40 C
Charging in the car, Charging while using Chrome etc: 40-44 C
Heavy Load: 42-48 C
I have owned Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 6p previously. This phone definitely runs hotter than all of them.
I got a replacement from Google, but it is the same problem.

I don't have air conditioning in my car, it was very hot outside, the phone was sitting in a cradle in direct sunlight and I was using the car charger, GPS and Spotify all at the same time--so it's possible my phone got much hotter than 42C when it did shut down. But I used my Nexus 6P and Samsung Galaxy S3 and S6 under identical circumstances and none of them ever overheated and shut down. They also didn't run anywhere near as hot as the Pixel XL when idle. My phone is generally 90-100F in an air conditioned apartment when I'm doing absolutely nothing with it--and multiple people have responded with similar temps for their own phones. If the idle temp for the phone is that high it's going to get super hot when using it under more demanding circumstances.

No problem. Have you observed higher battery drain when the CPU heats up? I'm not sure phones are meant to be that hot. I haven't seen any other flagship heating up so much.

I've never heard of another flagship phone that operates so hot. Battery does definitely drain faster the hotter the phone gets. But mine gets to 100F doing almost nothing.

Yes, mine get to 100-105 F range quickly on battery temperature.
Yesterday I had the following youtube, whatsapp, Browser and Gmail - I was switching back and forth and the phone was on 43 C (110 F), (granted I had 1080p video on and was chatting to a friend as well and responding to emails).. I had to then clear all apps and stop using the phone to allow it to cool down. The CPU temperature was over 58 C (measured using elemental X kernal with root access).
Something is wrong with either the 2 NEW Pixel XL phones that Google has provided me OR with the Pixel XL phone in general. There has to be a hardware problem. Maybe some phones are worse than others? Maybe it is a quality control issue?

Thank you. EXKM will put a persistent notification.
I would be very interested to know what your temperatures are under mid-heavy load : both the battery temp and CPU temp.
It's basic knowledge that heat destroys processors and other circuits. I have to use coolers and thermal paste etc in my home computer when it gets too hot. I can't see why it would be different for a phone.

The phone is known to get very hot with Daydream. I'm more concerned with how hot the phone gets under normal operating conditions. My battery goes from 80F to 100F in seconds if I do anything as light as surfing the Internet, reading my email, browsing the XDA app or using the EBay app. 100F seems to be the base temperature of my battery if I am using the phone for anything. I suspect that Google knows these phones won't last more than a couple years. I'm not sure if I should wait to find out or just get rid of this thing while it still works. At least in the Nexus phones you had the option of flashing a custom kernel and changing the governor so the phone would run cooler. You can't do that with the Pixel--the phone runs at the same temps or even worse on a custom kernel. I already tried. I've never owned one but I'm curious if the Pixel XL runs significantly warmer than an iPhone. Or for that matter a flagship Samsung phone--other than the one that blew up, obviously.

So XDA went ahead and showed what the surface temp of their pixel is under their tests

I thought the temp of the cpu temp was high, but compared to other processors this is pretty average/on the low side

Turns out that's no where near as hot as it would need to be to be a safety issue for any of us.

if you're concerned why samsung exploded while ours hasn't, they have a good explanation about the construction of those batteries being flawed.

I'm not concerned with safety. I'm sure the Pixel is perfectly safe. I'm concerned this phone is going to eventually bootloop like the Nexus 6P, the Nexus 5X and multiple LG phones. I'm not one of those people who wants to have the latest of everything and if I spend a small fortune on something I actually want it to last for a long time. I do appreciate the links you provided and will look at the info later. Thanks.
Hello Guys,
I'm going to USA in september, unfortunately I'll back to Brazil before the Pixel 3 launch.
Import from things in Brazil it's expensive, then I'll buy a cellphone in my travel, but I don't know if I buy a Pixel 2 XL or a Galaxy S9.
I'm would like to know if still worth it a Pixel 2XL.
Thanks.

Pixel 2XL all the way.
Here's the latest similar XDA thread with info here
That's a good reference galaxys pointed you to. I sold my P2XL and bought an S9+. I won't say it was a HUGE mistake but if we weren't a few months from the P3 I'd sell the Samsung & get another Pixel. I liked it a lot, looking forward to the next one.

My Mrs has the S8+ which is definitely a very nice device. Beautiful screen and hardware. However, when it comes to battery life compared to my P2XL, it's not even close. On average, she'll get about 4-5 hours of SOT a day, and be at about 20-30% of battery left in the tank after about 16 hours of up time, so she charges it up every night. My P2XL will average 8-12 hours of SOT over close to 48 hours of up time. Having said all that, we use our devices differently. I don't do any social media at all, she uses instafacegraham:silly: from time to time, and talks a fair amount to family. There are times as well where she gets random battery drain for no apparent reason, and the Sammy bloatware apps always seem to be doing something in the background. Granted, the 8+ isn't rooted like my P2XL, so she can't use TiBu or My Android Tools or magisk modules to turn things off. She also likes the fancy AOD clocks and themes that show up on the lock screen, which I think definitely sucks more juice, but they do look nice. So I reckon it all comes down to what you like and how you use your device, I will also say that with the more aggressive edge display of Sammy, that the cases that are available don't protect very well if you drop it on the screen. She's been lucky so far with most all of her drops being on carpet, whereas I've dropped mine a dozen or so times on concrete, but the Caseology vault series case I use has done a stellar job of keeping my device and screen in tact. So there is my opinion of the 2 devices. In the end, I prefer function over flash. So...the P2XL all the way :good:
I'd had both. I sold my p2xl for a s9+. Went back to the pixel 2xl. Here's what I can tell you...The sammy had a better screen, messages and dialer were million times better (they actually tell you who is texting you or calling you), internet browser is better, and theme engine (which I used the Android P beta one on it and loved it). The pixel...updates and better camera. Battery life was similiar between the two. The samsung had much better bluetooth ability in my truck (my pixel skips and **** in the truck). No need for a dongle for a headset. BUT...my unlocked Sammsy was on Feb update (which they JUST updated now). So, it's really a personal pick. I miss my sammy, but I like knowing I'm on the latest security patch too. And the unlock button is still miles better than the sammy.

You must have rooted and modified it because I don't see how else this is possible.

Oh I'm definitely rooted! There's a magisk module I use to knock down some of the 4,674 background services that google play services uses(sarcasm:silly)and I use another app called My Android Tools to stop a few others. But honestly, it's mostly all about usage patterns, signal, wifi, brightness, and lack of movement that gives me those numbers. I'm the rarity, not the norm
If I wasn't on Verizon now, I would be with OnePlus still, or even considered moving to something like the Xiomi Mix 2S, which supports VZW, that was just released.
OnePlus Deb support and path they are taking is really nice. Loved my 5T.
My only real complaint with the Pixel 2 XL is the fat and thick edges and feel compared to Samsing and OnePlus, and a few other phones today. It feels dated right after release IMO compared to competitors and chunky in hand.
Otherwise, Pixel 2 still a great choice.
So my pixel 3 XL is arriving on November 1st (UK) and I'm curious about the battery.
Of course I know the phone is new, takes time to bed in, and for adaptive battery to work it's magic - however, I've read and watched videos on YouTube about how the battery isn't quite as good as the pixel 2 XL, which I find surprising.
I understand that the battery is a tiny bit smaller, but with the more efficient sd845 I would have thought it'd more than offset the loss of the smaller battery size. In quite a few comparisons they're saying the phone hits 0 much faster than the pixel 2 XL.
So for those of you with the phone, what are your own anecdotal feelings on this?
so far, havent had much time to use the phone without it being charged on pixel stand.
I did leave it off the charger since yesterday, and it is on par or better than with my pixel 2 xl. right now it has 60% with 2h 20m of screen time, was off charger for approx. 14 hours, just had it plugged into computer for a few minutes to do a backup.
Doing just what I normally do (email, web, feed, etc), though I did watch a couple 4K UHD videos on youtube for about 20 minutes.
I charged mine fully, and then non-stop used it right off the full charge since I just got it. I got over 6 hours SOT with 20% left. This was all while the phone was being set up, syncing, and being constantly played with. If I can get over 6 hours SOT a day, and still have juice left I'm quite happy with it.
My battery life is almost exactly the same as what I got on my 2 XL. I'm good with that. It still would've been nice to get a little better battery performance. Also, my phone shut down last night at 5% battery left. Not cool. I'm gonna see if it shuts down early again tonight and if it does I'll have to send it back. I also noticed that the battery meter is getting stuck on certain percentages and then skipping a percentage here and there, just like my 6p, Pixel XL and 2 XL did. Must be a Google thing.

Ok I'm happy with that. I love the battery on my pixel 2 XL, and it sounds comparable if a tiny bit better than what I currently get in stock.

That sounds like a calibration issue if anything, few charge cycles should help I would have thought

Well I've just charged it once so maybe it'll get better. Every Google phone I've owned has had a battery meter that sticks on percentages here and there so I'm not looking for that to change. I just hope it doesn't keep shutting down early because that's something I'll send it back for.
Take this with a grain of salt as I do not have a sim card and only use as a media device but battery seems pretty good. At least on par with my iPhone XS Max which has one hell of a battery in terms of power consumption. Though with the pixel I probably get lower than average standby drain due to not having cellular.
Battery life is just OK I think. It gets me through a day with moderate use but not sure yet if it is better or even with the 2 XL.
Battery gets me through the day. It gets me through the day and more if I drive somewhere since my car mount has wireless charging built in.
Battery life for me so far is great. I'm sitting at 18% at midnight after being off the charger since 630am with just over 6hrs of screen on time.

Its just okay for me... I think I got better on my 2XL so far. Maybe 4-4 1/2 hours of SOT if I'm lucky... right now i'm at 80% with 38 min
Mark me down for about 6 hours SOT on average daily after about 4 days of usage.
I try to goto Greenify immediately to see the list of "who's talking to their mothership in the background".
.
I read the always "ON" display dragged the battery down and did not "really" add to the phone so much. . . . Is it 'on' by default ? . . . . I mean, if you're staring at the screen "that much", well . . . .
.
( for those with root ), Greenify made my last setup last more than two days / almost three ! . Subjective as to what need to always "run".
Battery has been pretty much a disappointment. It is nowhere near a One+ 6 or iPhone Xs Max - I'd even say worse than the Pixel 2XL.
Mainly disappointing since the screen brightness is so low even running full brightness outside makes it barely tolerable. This is after a couple of days but don't see it getting better.

How? I'm a heavy user but I don't game. Lots of internet via Chrome, tons of social media, pictures, etc. I turn off always on display and set it to turn on when I lift up the phone. I turn off Google location accuracy mode in settings and just use GPS. I don't use adaptive brightness. I don't sync/push emails. And I always have both wifi and data on. Just normal stuff. Nothing special. I don't use any battery saver app garbage. It's just stock. Been pleased with the battery.
Confirmation. Not as good as 2XL. But close. Max 8 hours SOT

I just got my phone yesterday. Think I need to adjust some settings. Definitely need to turn off location and the brightness thing. Also, I'm on stock and have a much of new stuff on my home screen. Trying to remove that too. I'm not a gamer either so I should get good battery soon

Oh forgot a most important thing! I use a pure black wallpaper. OLED displays don't use any power to display the black color so it only uses power to illuminate the icons when you are using a black wallpaper. Saves a ton of battery. Use a black background wherever you can. Dark mode is your friend.

Question about location. Did you turn it off on the top or bottom? I remember when I was on andriod before there was a way to turn it off and on in the control center.

Hello,
So I've had the Pixel XL since it first was released. Overall I've had no real issues, after a few OS updates it would start to get warm, but a full wipe and reload of apps would seem to fix this. I have it upgraded to Android 10, Rooted with Magisk and a couple apps, and have close to the latest patches on it and it has had an Otterbox on it since I got it.
Overall I have been happy with it, but the only issue I have is the battery. I can only get to about 20% battery when I am unsure when it will die. Sometimes it dies at ~20% if I am using Waze or Maps, something intensive. Sometimes it makes it all the way down to 5% if it has been idling and I tap the screen to see, I can unlock before it shuts down.
I understand it is the battery is probably degrading from age. So I am looking for options. I know the Pixel 4 was released, but I use the fingerprint reader quite a bit and don't like the face scanners so that leaves that out. I am also not a fan of the notch for an earlier 3 XL. I could get an external battery pack to replace my OtterBox case to sustain in-between charging but not sure which would work and could maintain data throughput and hopefully quick charging.
Any suggestions on what people have done in this situation?
Thanks in advance.
Pixel 3a XL is a good choice. You could replace the battery but it's not easy.
I'm having a similar situation. Bought my Pixel XL not long after it was released. Overall very happy with it, but recently it starts to get some battery problems. Mine is a bit better than your case. It's just degraded so I have to charge it three or four times per day for normal usage. Worth to mention that I limited the max charging to 80%. Now I'm considering to try the replacement battery from ifixit. However, some people say it's easy to destroy the screen during the replacement. I'm still having some further study here…

The only thing that is easy is breaking the screen. It's doable if you are really, really careful and have experience. I've done Motorola G 4, LG, Samsung screens, and iPad. Not sure I would try pixel. Paid to have mine repaired $80 and even repair shop broke the screen and had to replace.
