I had to solve same problem the other day. I unlocked, flashed stock recovery from 3.2.8 then adb sideload 3.2.8, locked bootloader, reboot and let it update to Nougat, between all steps full resets.

1.) As mentioned, BACKUP EVERYTHING.
2.) Flash stock oxygen recovery though fastboot or in twrp.
3.) Boot to stock recovery, sideload Official 4.0 ota via adb.
4.) Reboot and dont set up device ( not necessary ) enable developer settings and usb debugging.
5.) Flash TWRP .23 NOT .28 (.28 is bugged with decryption and f2fs errors)
6.) Boot to twrp, wipe /data to f2fs and /system and /cache to ext4.
7.) As wiping everything, copy any custom oxygen os build and supesu 2.79
8.) Flash any custom oxygen os build ( all these 3 builds flashes supersu itself, so no need to flash supersu, buy keep it for further later use.)
9.) Reboot, Setup and copy all ur stuff.
This method will surely get u a Rooted, decrypted, f2fs /data partition Oxygen Os 4.0.
For Stock/Twrp Recovery, Encrypted/Decrytped, Locked/Unlocked Bootloader, Unrooted Users (Those who dont want to root or decyrpt) -
1.) Backup is necessary as internal storage will be wiped, its a one time process as for now every Oneplus update will be f2fs /data compatible.
2.) ADB sideload 4.0 ota.
3.) Reboot and dont set up device ( not necessary )
4.) Go to backup and reset in settings, do a factory reset with internal storage ( This will wipe everything, BACKUP NEEDED )
5.) Let the process complete and check /data partition via DiskInfo app.
6.) If it isnt, do a factory reset again via stock recovery.
7.) If nothing helps, follow first method.
I cant guarantee this will work, but many users have reported this as working.
I think this will be sufficient

Will this method continue working if I install a custom rom after? Also, what do u mean by the new recovery supports f2fs decryption? Does it mean that your method doesn't or that we don't have to do these steps?

Hi,
to be synthetic:
From TWRP recovery, change filesystem to Ext4 for both Data and Cache, then full wipe everything (System too);
Go back to OxygenOS v3.2.8;
Be sure to replace TWRP with Stock Recovery (download from 3.2.8 official thread);
Lock bootloader (both from Developer Options and Fastboot);
Sideload via recovery OxygenOS v4.0;
Consider to factory reset for a clean installation.

Pls help me updating my 5t to oreo.i am currently on version 4.7.6 with twrp recovery nd super su root.
After updating to Oreo I again want to root my phone
Pls share links to download compatibile ROM, recovery nd super su.zip
But you already have the OREO OOS ROM installed, why not use it? Flash the Oreo recovery from codeworkx through fastboot, make sure to follow the instructions so it sticks and then flash Magisk or any root solution of your choice. It's not hard if you do some searching.
Check in ROMs' threads and come back what your interested ROM is.
What I did was flash the ota to update me to Oreo. Then had to reflash Magisk and kernel.

If you have already installed a custom recovery and rooted your phone then you should be able to follow these instructions.
I can personally confirm that I was able to install the beta versions of Oreo and the final version of Oreo without any issues.
Here's what I did:
1. Download full .zip
2. Download Blu_Spark TWRP or Codeworkx TWRP (I personally used Blu_Spark but both should work).
3. Download Magisk 15.3 (I havent used SuperSu in a while so I can't confirm how well it works on Oreo but in my opinion Magisk is a better root method and it works in this version of android).
4. Make sure you have both ROM and Magisk on a easy to find place on your phone.
5. Boot to fastboot and fastboot flash the recovery you just downloaded.
6. Boot to recovery, wipe dalvik and cache and then install the ROM.
7. Once the installation is done, boot to system and wait till the system to finish updating. Once there you can go to settings > phone status and it should read (android version = 8.0.0 and OxygenOS version = 5.0.2, congrats, you're on the latest OxygenOS version for this phone).
8. Reboot to fastboot, and fastboot flash the custom recovery again.
9. Boot to recovery, wipe dalvik and cache again, and flash Magisk, wipe dalvik and cache once more and reboot to system.
10. Once the phone is booted up, you should be rooted with Magisk and on the latest OS.
9. Boot to recovery, wipe dalvik and cache again, and flash Magisk, wipe dalvik and cache once more and reboot to system.
10. Once the phone is booted up, you should be rooted with Magisk and on the latest OS.
NOTE: Since this is a big version update from Nougat, it's always recommended to do a clean flash although not necessary in most cases unless there are issues like big battery drain or when apps or the OS are not working properly. Also, if you are coming from a custom ROM and not the official OxygenOS, then you should definitely do a clean installation (even if said custom ROM is based on OxygenOS).

Wiping data and system partition which means you're wiping the entire OS and installing the new version on a clean partition. Think of it as formatting a hard drive and installing an OS instead of just upgrading your existing OS.
You obviously lose all apps installed, and it would be like when you first turned on your phone, however as long as you don't wipe internal storage, all your photos, music, etc are not wiped so you can use apps like titanium backup to restore all apps and data .
This method is recommended when switching from different custom ROM's and when upgrading from major version updates, like for example, going to Android 8 from Andorid 7.

So i took the jump and flashed blu spark and the 5.0.3 full rom.
Yes i lost the recovery to stock, but that's ok. Just want to get OTA in the future and I don't need root at the moment.
So this is what i did (coming from 4.7.6, official twrp, magisk 15.3)
Make sure you have all the necessary files (eg. blu spark img file and the full ota file on your phone
boot the fastboot and "fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-x_blu_spark_v8.68-op5_op5t.img"
On the phone, choose and go to recovery
(now i'm on blu spark) Wipe Cache and Dalvik cache (i did this 2 times just to make sure)
Choose install and select the full ota rom file
Let it run and install the rom (took less than 5 mins)
Wipe Cache and Dalvik cache again (again, i wiped 2 times just to make sure)
Reboot
Make take a while (less than 10mins) for android to start and do the upgrade etc
Done
So far so good, i don't see any immediate problem. I will play a bit more and will post if I encounter any problem :good:
I have updated to 5.0.3 through system update app. where it downloaded full ota file and installed. Now I want to install twrp nd root my phone so pls confirm my steps
1 boot into fastboot mode and flash bluespark recovery
2 wipe delvik/cache from twrp recovery
3 flash magisk zip
4 again wipe delvik cache
5 reboot
are above steps correct?

Hi,
I was on miui 9.5.13.0, made a nandroid backup with twrp
I went to miui 10, made a nandroid backup
played a bit with miui, root, debloat and at reboot i was stuck at mi logo . Phone went alone to fastboot so i boot twrp and restore miui 10 backup.
This works.
I tried to restore my miui 9 backup and there i am stuck at mi logo. Phone do not goes to fastboot. I have to use vol - and power.
So it seems that my original backup is not working and safe.
What should i do now to come back to status phone out of the box ?
Shall i miflash fastboot rom and will it work ?
Shall i twrpflash clean my miui 9 rom ?
Shall i abandon miui and go only for custom rom ?
Thanks for help.
Can you still access TWRP recovery? I would download miui 9.5.13.0 Recovery Full Rom (1.5 GB) and install this ZIP via TWRP AFTER wiping cache and art/dalvik cache in TWRP.

You can use mi flash to flash fastboot rom or simply flash MIUI recovery rom(officially available) using twrp. Make sure you wipe system data and cache. You'd be good to go

yes i have access to fastboot so either miflash tool or twrp.
Shall i also wipe system,vendor,internal storage ?
what i do not understand is that nandroid backup is not working...
Because of downgrade from 10 to 9 ?
Because of encrypted device ?
Because i flashed china rom on global model ?

Official TWRP will not be able to update with the OTA update, only with the full ROM zip. There seems to be some other recoveries capable of that but since I don't have any experience with them, I refrain from naming them.

So how can I update oos while keeping the root access and not losing twrp recovery?

Assuming that you are on 9.0.2 and want to update to 9.0.3, you wipe system, caches and data (excluding internal storage) and flash 9.0.3 full zip. Then boot back into recovery (without booting into system). You should boot into TWRP. If you do, flash Magisk and boot into system. If stock recovery over writes TWRP, flash TWRP image in bootloader (fastboot) and then Magisk and boot into system.
If you are on Oreo and want OOS 9, it is slightly more complicated. You will have to format data (take a backup of your files and transfer to PC/Laptop) and then boot back into recovery and then flash the ROM and do the steps above. This is because of encryption issues.

Yes I'm on 9.0.2 and want to update to 9.0.3
Is there any other way to do it without losing all the data?

Beware that there are some reports of the requirement of formatting again when updating from 9.0.2 to 9.0.3, though I did not face it. A backup is a must (on PC/Laptop, not on the phone itself).
I don't know of any other 'safe' way of doing it without data loss (assuming that by data, you mean internal storage).

You cant update with OTA updates, you need the full rom.
I dont know how you updated to (8.0 to 9.0 the first time),
i unrooted and reset my prone while still on 8.0
and then i updated to 9.0 with official recovery after that i installed twrp and rooted with magisk.
If you dit anything different you might run into problems.
1. Download and update to the latest magisk in TWRP. (If you already have it installed skip this, but still download it to a folder on your phone).
2. Download the full rom to your phone, full rom here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/rom-oxygen-os-9-0-3-android-pie-oneplus-t3937636.
3. Install the rom with twrp, no need to wipe anything.
4. Right after install the latest version of magisk.
5. Reboot your phone to system.
6. Wait until phone starts (it might take up to 7/10 minutes).
7. Done

Yes, but have a backup.
Hello,
i have version 11.0.2.0 Global on the device with twrp, magisk and edXposed.
Now I have seen that there is already a global version 11.0.6.0.
In my case, how can I update to a new version without losing the data and settings?
And one more question in general. Version 11.0.6.0 is not shown to me via OTA. Here it says, latest stable version 11.0.2.0. Is it not rolled out via OTA?
And if there was a newer version available via OTA, could I install the update despite TWRP?

I (without root) flashed the OTA on 11.0.2.0 global PGGMIXM to 11.0.6.0, but, to flash with root... Maybe (I dont know if it will brick) but you can try flash a recovery version of 11.0.6.0

I had exactly the same setup as you - here's what I did: 1 - Downloaded full rom from official Mi website (MIUI Global 11.0.6.0(PGGMIXM) 2 - Moved rom to root storage 3 - Flashed rom with TWRP, and voila! Updated to latest stable rom. Just remember to flash TWRP recovery again through Fastboot, because you will have stock recovery after update. I am using LTWRP- 3.3.1 -0924 and rooted and installed Magisk, without issues

One thing you forgot to mention is what region is your phone (not your Rom). If Chinese you may have to be extra cautious and steps above might not work for you.
Good luck!

Interesting. I'm still on rooted miui 10 4.5.0 PGGEUXM rooted magisk and twrp recovery-红米Note8Pro-3.3.1-9.0.img
I didn't update yet as bricking started to happen and I can't miss my phone as a daily driver.
Normally I would flash the full ROM, flash magisk, wipe cache and reboot.
So flashing full ROM doesn't break root?
Can't we flash recovery by twrp after flashing ROM instead by flashing by fastboot?
Isnt secure flash twrp after the ROM.

Flashing a full rom will break root, and install stock recovery...
It is too risky to flash another recovery with twrp (possible brick)
so where to put official update on sd card?
download recovery rom?

I just brought rmn8p with miui 11.0.6.0 ,so it is ok to use LRTWRP-3.3.1 -0924. I came across a new version -1104, I'll try it after unlock the bootloader. After that flash preloader then trwp.
Use LR.TWRP, it got an option to make the TWRP persist on every OTA.
Also LR.TWRP = less headache on Xiaomi devices.
Here's the latest build: https://mega.nz/folder/cMAT3Q4b#7CbPV7sbEuSEdP7cehXJ-w

Link.
This will brick every phone. I brick my EU ROM, with this method of update rooted phone.
What is correct solution to update rooted phone?
Redmi Note 8 Pro, 11.0.2 QGGEUXM, TWRP 3.3.1 1210, Magisk 20.3 -> 12.0.1 QGGEUXM
System say there exists update, i choose download, select reboot, but after reboot i end up in TWRP but nothing happened. After exit i boot to old 11.0.2 system with message that update fail.
Edit 1: after 2. download/update/reboot TWRP start installing image ...
Edit 2: after automatic update system say 12.0.1, just loosing root (all apps stay)
Edit 3: installed TWRP again, Magisk (there was little problem because Magisk Manager say "not installed", but after some googlig i fix that. So i update system without reinstalling apps or loosing data.
Clear solution is probably download full rom from official Mi website and flash selected rom with TWRP (flash TWRP recovery again, repeat root process, to get root back). See next post.

This is how I upgraded, try at your own risk.
Download full recovery zip of MIUI 12 and latest magisk
Create twrp Backup just in case
In LR TWRP 10 mount & format system, cache, dalvik, vendor.
Flash full rom (not ota!)
Press home to return to the main screen Choose Advanced-File Manager item >system_root / system / folder at the bottom if there is a recovery_fromboot.p file delete it.
Go back to Advanced and select Close AVB2.0 and confirm with a swipe to the right.
flash Magisk
boot to system
First boot takes a while, relax and grab a drink
Remember to backup and close AVB!
Thank you so much for sharing these steps. I have questions for a couple of steps below:

What is TWRP 10? Do I format first and then mount? I usually wipe system, cache, dalvik and then "install" the full rom (your next step), but i never try "mount" here. What does mount do here? what is wiping vender and mounting vender?

There are two check box here. one is "close the boot verification of avb2.0" the other is "close the DMVerity of avb2.0". Do O check one of both?
Thank you!
