verizon vs unlocked google pixel difference? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I've got my eyes on a unlocked Verizon pixel 3 XL that's unlocked. How deep is Verizon's software in the pixel and would it even be possible to fully convert it to a regular Google pixel?

If the bootloader is unlocked I don't see any reason you can't use the non verizon firmware on it. The devices themselves are identical, just the firmware is different. Note that I have not done this so you're at your own risk.

As far as I know it's sim unlocked. If that's unlocked, bootloader should be unlockable as well right? Or how does the process go on the pixel?
On 6T it's you get a sim unlock, then you send a request application, once approved they send you a .bin to unlock the bootloader thru fastboot

No, sim and bootloader are two different things. You'd need the bootloader unlocked to flash the regular Google pixel firmware. Sim unlock just allows you to use the phone on different carriers.

I understand the difference so In another words the bootloader is not unlockable on the Verizon one and there is no process for once it's sim unlocked like it is on the Oneplus 6T (where sim unlock is required in order to unlock bootloader)

No you will not be able to unlock the bootloader on the Verizon variant weather it is sim unlocked or not. However you can uninstall all the pre loaded Verizon apps. I had the Verizon model and was able to uninstall all the bloat. The only difference is the bootloader and being able to root.

I've read thru it, I mean someone will crack it sooner or later. Some fine folks brainstorming it. Wish it was as simple as on the one plus, you just wait 7 days and you're unlocked.

Is there a difference in model number or something on the box itself?

I know, was trying to make sure the one I was getting on eBay was infact a Google one. Apparently there's a major difference in the label. Same model number etc. However there's a lot more writing on it. Mention of imported by Google Canada which isn't present on the Verizon one.

Factory Unlocked?

I read somewhere on google that the T-Mobile version was going to come factory unlocked. Can anyone comment?
When where ? Can you add the link

I find it odd that the key was already turned. Normally they have the door locked but give you the key to use if you so choose. Honestly the way this phone came out without any kind of safety for the boot partitions is asking for a malicious app/virus to brick phones. Unless purple Drake did the factory unlock but I don't think they stated that.

No they stated that when they were exploring root and unlock methods they were surprised to find out that the Tmo version was already unlocked... I would think that raises the chances that LG releases a key to unlock other variants as well? ... other than at&t and Verizon that is...

Yeah and you know this might sound silly but I wonder if anyone has tried the normal unlock commands in fastboot for the other phones. Development isn't booming like on samsung or htc phones so you never know. Pretty sure somebody out there has tried I mean somebody had to right? Maybe Ill try to lock my bootloader in fastboot and see what happens. I would like to have it locked when I'm not modding that's just good practice.
*Edit
locked bootloaders and encrypted bootloaders are different just wanted to make sure everyone reading this that didn't know that now knows.
As always people keep getting confused between sim unlock and bootloader unlock.

I was able to sim unlock my G3 for like $3...there are several posts in the forums with similar success stories.
I used unlockcode247 and it worked like a charm. I got the code in under 15 minutes. $2. Can't go wrong.

I wish VZW users would preface their thread titles with [VERIZON] so the rest of us could save a few clicks and just ignore them.
@revolt1,
Don't hold your breath waiting. I doubt there'll be a method to unlock VZW Pixel XL bootloader running 7.1.1.
7.1.1 locked up the bootloader again. Need to wait for an exploit. I'm finding .ore and more these days that stock Android is my fav without root now that I have a non-root AdBlock method.

An update locked the bootloader? Thanks for this, I'll not be going to vz to get this phone. Now I'm wondering if the update that the Google bought phone gets when a vz sim is inserted (what I've read) will do the same?

If you find one in stock it shouldn't have the update since it just came out last week. You can't remove sim and skip setup and don't connect to wifi. Then you can unlock before taking the OTA. That's what I did on my replacement pixel from best buy
Just to clarify, if you are already unlocked before taking the 7.1.1 update you will still be unlocked after update.

Is the Verizon Pixel XL currently rootable?

I'm going to buy a Pixel XL soon, and while I can order from Google, Verizon would be cheaper for me. Is the Verizon version rootable right now?

If you are going to get it from Verizon make sure you find one that is still on version 7.1. Currently bootloader can only be unlocked on this firmware. What I did is go to the Verizon store and asked them to look at all of their inventory of pixels. Look at the side of the boxes with all the barcodes try to find one that shows NDE63X H, L,P, or V should work too as those were 7.1. It will most likely be difficult to find one so you might have to visit a few Verizon stores. If you are lucky enough to find one make sure you tell them that you want to put in the Sim yourself. Take the phone home turn on usb debugging and then run depixel8 after that throw the Sim in.
So if I get a pixel xl from google, I can root it then put it on Verizon? Sorry about jacking the thread but I don't see the answer anywhere.

From Google you're fine flash and fiddle away. If you get it from Verizon unless you're able to get a 7.1.1 firmware from oct-nov2016 you cannot unlock and root it.

Unfortunately you need an unlocked bootloader in order to flash older firmware.

Is the T-Mobile OP7T (HD1907) screwed because of the locked bootloader?

I've read here that the bootloader is locked on T-Mobile's OP7T, are we screwed when it comes to rooting? Doing a search for HD1907, I hardly see anything related to rooting it successfully. Has anyone done it yet? Is there hope for us HD1907s?
Thanks!

You can request a sim unlock from mobbdeep and you'd be able to unlock your bootloader once you sim unlock your phone. Then you can proceed to convert to international if you please.
Edit: it's a week wait period just like previous tmo OnePlus devices we should know this.

Bootloader unlock is in the developer options section of settings. you have to get the unlock token and submit it to OnePlus for your unlock bin. Once the unlock bin is flashed you're bootloader unlocked.

Know of any disadvantages to switching to the US Global version of the OS? Seems like those are being updated faster than the T-Mobile versions.
I'm planning on writing up some documentation about the conversion process once I get my unlock code (should be here tomorrow which means it might take me a few days to mess with it and get it all nice and neat)

You don't. It takes exactly 7 days from when you submitted it. You can check back on the site you submitted the request on and you'll see when it's done, and you can then download it from there. Pestering OnePlus or T-Mobile does nothing, you won't get it any faster.

Verzion Google Pixel 2 XL Bootloader/Oem Unlocking?

Hi all, I recently bought an "unlocked" google pixel 2 XL on ebay from a generally trusted seller but I have been super frustrated with issues I'm having with trying to unlock my bootloader and enabling OEM unlocking. The button literally remains grey and I have tried many things to get it to toggle but it won't (sim card, terminal commands, resetting multiple times). I'm also doing this on a mac since I don't have a pc. The command tells me it is not allowed.
It is Android 9. I found out from another user that it is because it was originally Verizon. I have looked through a lot of the helpful xda forums and threads but I haven't found one that lays out a method for unlocking Verizon Google Pixel 2 XL.
Is there a simpler way to unlock it, does anyone know? Could I go straight to Verizon and ask them to unlock it for me? I'm super frustrated or am I SOL and should return the phone? This is my first time using an android so I would appreciate any help.
Thank you very much in advance.
Since nobody else is replying. I think your sol if it is indeed a Verizon phone. There's a discussion on xda about it.

Nothing you can do. Just install the 11 beta and enjoy life.
Think of it this way. Since root isn't possible for you passing Safetynet will never be a problem.
I have the same issue. What I've found is OEM unlock isn't available because your pixel was originally on Verizon

It's not possible as the bootloader will still be locked. Its presence in developer options doesn't change that.
The only way to get past the bootloader lock, if you're not one of the lucky ones like @tfat, is to install a ROM using the device's emergency mode. The problem is getting a firmware package that uses that mode. A regular ROM download won't cut it.

It won't work as you must have an unlocked bootloader to even install the GSI image. There is a 50+ page thread detailing attempts to unlock the Verizon device. No one on that thread succeeded. If what you proposed did work that thread wouldn't exist as yours is one of the easiest solutions.
Unless you can unlock the bootloader or somehow get a tech center restore image using emergency mode you're dead in the water. And don't think you can simply guess the decryption key either. To find the key would currently require spending an amount of time greater than the current age of the universe.
EDIT: Finally, check out the factory images page for our device. Notice how for the most part there are no images specifically for Verizon? That's because the device uses a different method to identify itself as a Verizon device. It's almost a certainty that the IMEI is part of it.

This method only works on the Pixel 1. You can get to the point where you can toggle the "OEM Unlocking" switch (in my testing its always defaulted to on once togglable), but running "fastboot flashing unlock" fails.
According to the person who found this method out, it's because the Pixel 2 has an on-board security chip that deals with OEM unlocking, with the 1st gen Pixel doesn't have :/
It's probably a very safe bet, and sad to say, that since no one found a way to unlock the Verizon Pixel 2 XLs in it's 2.5 years of existence, there will be little if any work put into finding a way at the 3 year mark with 2 (maybe 3) newer models on the market since the 2 XL became available.
