Is my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini hard bricked? - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After sitting on my desk for one year, my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini refuses to turn on, show the battery icon when plugged in, and shows practically no sign of life for that matter. What confuses me is that I haven't done anything that would typically hard brick a phone, like flash a wrong ROM or mess with the bootloader.
So here's the full story:
Four years ago I got my S4 mini. After one year of use the stocm ROM became really slow and buggy, which is when I found out about custom ROMs. I installed CWM and flashed a CyanogenMod ROM (Android Lollipop). After another year, it too started to become sluggish, so I flashed another CyanogenMod ROM based on the next version of Android (Marshmallow). That ROM worked well for only a year too, so I decided to instead get a new S8. While waiting the few weeks for the phone to be released and delivered, the S4 mini became increasingly slow and riddled with various bugs (most notably, Google Play Services wouldn't work, so I couldn't use Google apps the last few days). When my new phone finally arrived, I turned my old old S4m off and laid it on my desk where it stayed absolutely untouched for a whole year.
I recently took up interest in seeing my old data. So I charged the S4m, until the battery icon displayed 25%, then turned it on. The bootup sequence started as usual, but never got past the Samsung logo. I tried turning it on again, then booting it in recovery, but nothing happened. When I plug it in, it won't show the battery icon, or any sign of life (I tested multiple usb cables+chargers).
The only hint that still it's alive is that when I plug it into my laptop, my laptop recognizes it's usb driver ("Your device 'qualcomm hs usb qdloader 9008' has been connected"), however, this happens even when the battery isn't plugged into the S4m.
So, what do I do? Would a USB jig help me? How else could I test it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Additional information: I have two removable batteries. The S4m has a 32 gig sd card, which was used as integrated storage (tried booting up with/out it. Still nothing).

Surface 2 Downgrade/Jailbreak

Got some spare time at the moment so I've decided to attempt to tackle this one. As far as I can see a windows 8.1 Jailbreak is already out of the question. To many people have tried and failed so tbh I'm not even going to attempt it!
Downgrading to windows 8 on the other hand does seem plausible.
What I have already discovered:
The Surface RT 8.0 image will boot and BSOD.
The cause of the BSOD is down to both storage and display drivers , a modified WIM with the surface 2 storage drivers will allow the os to install and boot to a BSOD with graphical glitches relating to the display driver.
Booting without video drivers and forcing the standard VGA compatible driver causes no output after the surface logo however it does not seem to BSOD, the system keeps on running providing both USB power and power to the typecase. Plugging in an external display also has no output but the monitor does detect a device.
I already have an original RT downgraded to 8.0 that I can use to aid development.
From what I can tell the main issue of getting display output is down to the Tegra 4 VGA driver not being compatible with windows 8, probably down to driver signing. I already have a few ideas on how to tackle this.
Its been over 6 months since I looked into this and I have since sold my surface 2 but I've decided to order a used one to continue with the project, I feel there is still some life left in the hardware and I would like to be able to use it to its full potential.
If I've missed anything or if anyone has any ideas please let me know. As soon as I have the surface 2 I will be continuing with this and will hopefully have a test image in the coming months

Known bugs/issues and fixes for M5

This thread is for M5 users who have bugs or issues when using Xperia M5 so we know we are not the only one facing it. If possible please include fixes for the issues if there's any.
So far the bugs I've found:
1. Camera shutter lag
According to other threads, this is a known issue because of the Xperia M5 image processor or something like that. Not a big issue though but it's bugging me a bit
Solution: None
2. Phone will lag if phone gets hot
Basically I was excited when I read about the Xperia M5 specs. I was using a rooted Xperia Z1 before this and I never remember when my Z1 gets laggy because it hardly lags. Xperia Z1 is using quadcore so I expect Xperia M5 to perform better with octacore but i guess i was wrong..
Solution: Restart the phone often. At least once a day
Issue with Xperia M5
My phone switches off suddenly even when it is sufficiently charged. It doesn't start unless connected to charger, battery percentage after connecting to charger shows it was sufficient to keep phone on. This is very irritating and disappointing. I can not use phone unless I find charger when phone switches off like that. I have already did factory reset but this problem is not resolved. I am not sure whether this is software or hardware issue. I am frustrated that after spending such high amount phone is not up to the mark :crying:
Many people are talking about this issue but there is no resolution mentioned in those posts. Some say, it is because issue with Android 5.0. If that is the case, I seriously hope Sony releases Android 6.0 update asap.

I am encountering the same issue too. I am doing a PC companion repair now in hope that it may solve the problem. I also find that sometimes it fail to read my 64gb Class 10 sd card when my Z1 can handle it without any problem.
I suspect that it's all down to mediatek processor. Probably it can't handle heavy use and it gets hot pretty fast. It could be that it's overheating and it triggered the phone to off on it's own. I am going to feedback to @Sony if the problem still persist after repairing from PC companion.
It's disappointing that the specs looks so fascinating on paper but the phone's performance is not up to expectation. We're talking about octa core 2.0 ghz processor, not Z1's quad core processor which unexpectedly perform better than M5.
I have the same problem with my M5.. randomly turns off and won't turn on again unless it is "jumpstarted" with a usb cable.. it doesn't happen often (once a week maybe) but it is still a concern. It basically acts like the battery has run out, when you plug the usb cable in the notification light is red like it is when your battery is low... but it had 80% charge!
The other issue I noticed is the touchscreen spazzes out when it is connected to the charger, that may be a heat related issue, I don't often use it when plugged in so I'd almost forgotten about that problem.
Apart from these two minor complaints it's a really good phone, I'd even say I'm impressed. Half the price of a flagship.
I still believe it's software issu, because I read about Nexus 3 having same issue when updated to Android 5.0. Fortunately, for me there's no overheating issue. I tried using Pc companion and there is a firmware update available for this phone, but when I tried installing it, it gives 'Unfortunately, update service was stooped' message repeatedly when Pc companion tries to shut down phone to install update. Hard reset, Upper volume key and power button doesn't work for me. Not sure whether this update will resolve my issue and how to install it otherwise. Looking forward for suggestions on how to install updates and whether it helped.

Seems the battery and the connecting cable issue,as my M5 already sent for repair, and the service center replaced these things at the end.
Algebra the Bard
Hi, I'm also encountering the same problem here. They've actually changed 2 new phones for me due to the 2nd M5 that they changed for me has flaw at its screen. I've encountered microphone and speaker problem immediately at that moment when i got my 3rd M5. Immediately, they software update it for me. But problem doesn't stop there. I've been going in and out Sony Centre and SOny Service centre and the rude seller says that I'm the only customer whom is complaining. After sending in to the factory, they changed my CPU, but problem still arise. Previously, it was just the 2nd sim slot that couldn't detect my sim card, microphone and speaker problem, but now, my phone has been shutting down almost everyday and it is unable to be turned on unless is connected to a power supply. It has gone severe as it shut down 7times a day. Imagine if I didn't bring my power bank out with me, and i'm in an emergency, that must be crazy.! For my first M5, it has problem with its camera and also the microphone and speaker. It shuts down whenever is slightly hot. But for my M5 now, it shuts down whenever it feels like to. I'm definitely annoyed and irritated!
i have purchased sony xperia m5 dual.. i also facing camera issues. its 21.5 MP but pictures are not clear and very blurred .also my firmware build is latest 30.B.1.33. sony needs to fix this camera problem ASAP..

Same problem here with my fiancée's new M5, temporary fix is to only allow GSM network, no LTE or WCDMA. After this it never crashes, it only does this when the LTE/WCDMA signal goes bad and if you won't allow those networks then the phone won't lock up. Does anyone know if it helps at all to take it to service under warranty, or just wait for the update? If it's not repairable I guess we have to try to return the phone completely.
My Xperia M5 Dual needs about 0.5 and 2 seconds to save the image. This is really annoying !
When I set my Class 10 SD Card as picture folder instead of the internal storage, the save time doesn't change.
Is this the shutter lag everyone talks about ?
M5 switching off
Like many others on this thread, I have the switch off at random and needs a cable to restart thing. I'm going to try switching off the LTE, and see if that helps at all. But thus far, it shuts off when it's in my pocket, at other times when I receive phone calls. It's really very frustrating. Though it's a mid range phone, $525 is expensive for someone who is a student. I probably would have stayed Samsung if they didn't get rid of expandable storage in the S6 models.
I was so happy with my Xperia z1 tablet, and it's reliability, that I thought this Sony M5 would be the same. But alas, it isn't. I really hope upgrading to Android 6.0 will help. But I'm not holding my breath.
I also got the randomly turns off and won't turn on again unless it is "jumpstarted" issue, I rang Sony Mobile australia, and they told me to try "safe mode" without any app installed. Sound like a crazy idea. I only have facebook, instagram , whatsapp and camscanner installed. And all the google apps updated, and uninstalled all those PSN , and sony stuff. I told Sony Mobile Australia that it is a known issue eg: this post, gmsarena , few chinese / taiwanese post like mobile01 , and chinatimes have at least a few users on each forum/website complaining the same issue. It is even on taiwanese newspaper.
1 of my friend in Hong Kong also got the same issue with his M5.

Mine is:
Every time I take picture with rear camera, with manual settings, the phone suddenly hangs, not responding at all. I have to restart it so it would work again. Any solution to this? Please reply. One reason I bought this phone because of its camera.... Z Ultra is a big go down for camera sector so I bought the M5 for the camera. Thanks.

For the irritating auto-shutdown error, i manage to solve it when i changed the settings in network.
Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Preferred network type > Change to [GSM only]
I haven't had any auto-shutdown error from then on. Just remember to reboot phone often.
Whenever I tap the battery usage button in Power Management settings, "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" pops up. And the battery drains too fast without even turning the screen on. Hope Marshmallow fixes these. Oh, and there's the weird Snapchat camera bug that crashes both the cameras and can't be used by other apps as well.
Anyone got a solution for the snapchat bug? It happens quite often that I can't use the app at all.
My m5 cannot fully charged, it's always stuck in 87%
anyone have the same issue?
PS: how long does it takes to charge the phone from empty to fully charged ?
Sim Card Slot 2 problem
My M5 has only 2 problems so far:
1) The Sim Card Slot 2 suddenly can't detect my sim card. (Previously works just fine and the sim card is in good condition too.) Any solution on this??? :crying:
2) The Market App always auto close and jump back to homescreen.
Luckily, so far, my phone has no any auto-shutdown problem, etc. even I set it to LTE in network.
same a you
battery problem too, hope sony release new update fix

Is it worth it

So I have always been a razer fan and always fancied checking out there phones. I here they ain't the best but I have a chance to get my hand on the first one and wondering if I should, I herd the camera is trash but I also see there are gcam ports for it and wondering if that makes much difference to the camera at all, I had the pixel 2 and lived the pic quality and used a few gcams on other phones and results were great so jw what it's like on razer. What would people suggest. Is it worth it?
I'm still using the Razer Phone 1.
If you stick to stock rom, it's not worth it... no more security updates, no exFAT sdxc card support unless you adopt it as internal storage (so you are stuck with 64GB), no aptX bluetooth codec.
If you plan on using custom rom, it's better but overall still not worth it. Not many custom roms available. Lineage is officially supported, but I had sleepless nights getting it to work. Going into recovery mode requires plugging the phone into a computer or another phone... which if you happen to be in a situation where you can only boot normally by first going into recovery mode (yes i had to live with this for most of last year)... you better hope your phone doesn't just spontaneously restart or run out of juice without a USB cable and computer/phone nearby. Keep in mind, Google Pay won't work with customs rom. Magisk can add aptX, but no luck with exFAT sdxc.
Yes, the 120Hz refresh rate is nice but the phone at this age no longer has stellar battery. Like you said, camera is trash. GCam only works for one of the two rear cameras (i.e. front camera does not work with GCam). Another annoying bit is the speaker grills... they fall off and get bent or broken, and there is no replacement you can buy.
I'm keeping my Razer Phone around since I like to tinker with the phone and see how long it can last. If you like to do the same, I hope you get a really good deal on the phone. Otherwise, I'd say look elsewhere.

Not sure if there is a Telegram group for the phone. I mainly just use XDA here.
As a quick update to my previous post, in terms of the limited storage, I've gone down the route of picking up a 256GB A2 microsdxc card (split 37% (95GB) adoptable storage and the remainder as FAT32). After using the migrate function for adoptable storage (thus in theory the system thinks there is about 159GB of internal storage), this seems to ease up on the limited storage issue.
The reason I split the card is for the possibility (although untested) to backup my phone to the card / transfer files via the card and still use the card on another device (may require the phone to be powered off to not mess with the system/app files on the adoptable storage part).
But overall, my view still stands, only get this phone now if you want to tinker with it. Don't expect battery to be great with this phone's age either (FYI, look at this thread to manage battery health https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...arging-controller-acc-on-razer-phone.4235283/).

I had one sleepless night to install Lineage os. Now that it's installed, I'm really enjoying this phone. Look for a good deal if you're buying anyway, like I would pick this over a budget phone if they're the same price (only if you plan to use a custom rom). The stock rom is way too outdated

General Not a perfect phone, but exceptional for $500

I have had my ZTE Axon 30 for about 3 weeks I think, maybe more like 2. I like it a lot. The only two quirks I've noticed is that the screen is not as responsive as I would like (might be the screen protector as I put it on before even powering the phone on, since I cracked my last screen), and sometimes the Facebook app will be jerky until I close it and restart the app. Haven't seen that on any of my last 5+ phones. My last phone was a Moto Edge S (G100) which was a pretty good phone, but a little smaller than I like. The battery life is pretty good on this phone, I usually get through a day of usage, but it's around 15% or less if I wait until bed time to actually plug it in. I'm overall happy with this phone, though the quick settings options in the notifications dropdown has certain parts not customizable like I want them to be (wifi calling and mobile data are permanent, huge buttons, and I would much prefer other options like airplane mode or bluetooth). The performance is very good, maybe a little lower than the Edge S, but still not bad. It's a good phone and I'm happy with it.
Sidenote: if anyone knows about a bug causing Facebook to be laggy sometimes until restarted and you know how to fix it, please let me know?
Here is my experience so far after a week of use. I don't care about cameras on a phone. So no feedback from me there.
It's pretty big but it's not bad to hold since it's not wide, just tall.
Performance is fast enough for me. I can watch and scroll through 5.7k 360 videos on the Insta360 app without lag at all.
The screen is pretty pretty good. Would have liked it to have higher nits for outside use. But won't complain much since 99.9% of the phones on the market have punch holes and notches....
The fingerprint sensor is very accurate and fast. Finally got a phone where it is actually useable. My previous 2 phones' fingerprint sensors were trash.
Smart Lock Trusted Places! How I missed this feature on the Mi 9T which only supported Bluetooth unlock and only with Xiaomi Bluetooth devices...
Related to the previous point, I wish there was an option to remove the 'Swipe screen to unlock' when the phone is unlocked with Smart Lock. The Mi 9T has this option in the Developer options but didn't find it on this one. It's just an annoyance having to swipe.
Speaking of Bluetooth, no issues so far. Did file transfers and use Sennheiser MW2 to listen to music. No disconnections at all.
The Always On Display does not work for me at all. Nada. Not a big deal for me since I don't use it but it should be fixed.
As HopelesRomantc91 mentioned, not all of the notifications icons are customisable. Torch, Bluetooth, Data and Wifi are big buttons that cannot be removed. The rest can be added, removed and re-ordered
It comes preloaded with some bloatware but it can be easily removed using ADB.
Since nobody mentions this in a phone review, although it also depends on the carrier, I had no problems with calls and also use dual SIM.
I wish it had the feature of applying dark mode for all apps like MIUI. The next best thing this offers is Read Mode which you can turn globally or per app. I use the latter to turn Apps that don't have a dark theme into greyscale. Helps a bit.
The touch sensitivity on the edge of the screen seems to be a bit 'rough'. When using the keyboard and pressing on the letters/buttons at the edge, most of the the time there is a delay with registering the touch. This has probably to do with the screen-edge mistouch prevention. I changed it to 0 but it still occurs. Maybe this can be fixed in a firmware update. I don't have any issues with the phone registering unintended touches when holding it even at 0.
Regarding gestures & motions, they all seem to work pretty well. I mostly use double tap to wake.
For some reason, the Z-POP feature in the settings under Feature is also named Mi-Pop in the Notification icon. I don't find it that useful.
No headphone jack sucks but it comes with the adaptor. I just leave the earbuds attached to it since I only use them for the phone. So it's just a straight plug in for me.
Last but not least is the battery/optimisation. It's pretty pretty good! I judge the battery by screen off time. I charged it to 90%, went to bed and left the phone on. Just DnD on. No power saver. 8 hours later it was still 90%! After that, I only used the phone every now and then since I was busy working. Around 3 hours later, this thing was still at 90%. Compared to the Mi 9T, the Axon 30 doesn't seem to suffer from constant wakelocks so when the screen is off, it is majority of the time in deep sleep. Pretty optimised. I checked with BetterBatteryStats. I don't use 5G. Oh and the charging speed is fast! From 20% to 90% in ~27min.
Overall I am satisfied with the phone.
That's it for now. If I remember something else or encounter anything else of interest, will post it here.
Google Play store does not automatically update the apps and doesn't show the notifications. Both settings are on. So I have to remember once in a while to open the Play Store and install the pending updates manually. Not sure if this is specific to this device or if it's a Google Play store bug but I never had this problem on previous devices.
New update; 11.0.17_A2322G_EEA. Always on display is fixed. Automatic Play Store app updates and notifications still not working.
Hi guys...
I'm thinking of buying this phone. I was wondering, do you still get updates from time to time? Any word on some major ones, like Android 12?
Would you recomende it for about 375 EUR / 395 USD it costs at local retailer right now?

Last update was the one I posted in my last post so Security update is the one from December... I contacted ZTE support about a possible upgrade to Android 12 or at least more security updates. Their reply was that they don't have any information but that it might receive future updates because it is a newly launched phone.... Almost a year old.

Don't know, but interesting that EEA has higher nominal version number (11.0.17), but older Android patch level...
Still hoping for Android 12, read somewhere it can be expected till the end of August. Now, is it info for CN or Global version, I don't know.
Btw, I feel like they didn't sell many units of this one globaly, although they marketed it decently and it got attention because of the under display cam and stuff. Seems like even on tech forums nobody has this model...

Btw, I feel like they didn't sell many units of this one globaly, although they marketed it decently and it got attention because of the under display cam and stuff. Seems like even on tech forums nobody has this model...

Since you're here, do Play Store apps update automatically for you and get notifications?

I haven't tried because I actualy prefer to update them manualy.
I can turn the options on, test and let you know...
Update: seems it doesn't work - I can see updates as waiting, but no update and/or notifications took place.
A thing I'm curios about...
One of the things I was happy about when I bought the phone was a 65W charger. The brick is quite compact but heavy (as the 65W probably should be), cable is USB-C to USB-C. Perfect for a universal charger.
But when I tried to charge my Lenovo laptop with it, nothing happened. The laptop also came with 65W charger (of course, much bulkier and with a longer cable).
I was really hoping I could use the ZTE brick on the laptop, mainly because I used my previous phone charger (Poco X3) and it worked although that one could deliver just 33W.
Any ideo why this happens?

So when you plugin the ZTE charger in the laptop, it's not detected at all? Or is it detected, not discharging just not charging? Maybe it doesn't support any of the Output voltages/amps of the charger? Not really that knowledgeable in electricity. What output voltages/amps does it show on the Lenovo charger?
It's not detected at all.
Both of them show 20V - 3.25A - 65W.
For the 15V, 9V and 5V they have different A and W values.
Edit: just tried on my co-worker's laptop (also Lenovo, but different model), and it charges at full speed. His also came with a 65W charger originaly. So it seems to be some compitability issue, maybe USB-C port or something. Quite strange.
New update! I guess EEA version is not abandoned yet. 11.0.20 with June security update. Maybe we get Android 12 end of next year when Android 14 is out.
Good news. I'm still hoping for the end of August...
Now, playing with the settings, I saw a strangely named "tiny screen display" setting under "Display" options. I must admit, took me a few minutes to realize it's about UDC (under display camera) area.
How did you set yours (if you changed it at all)? I tweaked mine so it is hardly visible on white, but then again it is still quite noticable on other colors.
Haha never knew what that setting was and never tried it.
Yeah, I think I got it after the last update. Quite sure it wasn't there when I got the phone.
Here's how it looks...

Global just got 11.0.9 with June security patch.
MyOS12.0.16_A2322 (with Android 12 I believe) was rolled out for the Chinese version Axon 30 5G on 2022-08-02 according to this support page: https://www.ztedevices.com/cn/supports/zte-axon-30-5g/
Not sure how long it will take to hit the other markets...

Samsung Dex flaky

Samsung Dex seems to be flaky when I try and use it over a wire to a Monitor/TV when using my fully updated T-Mobile Note 10 Plus. The exact same setup is rock solid with my Samsung Galaxy Tab s5e. All I swap is the tablet to the phone. Setup use to be solid on the Note 10 Plus as well but latest updates seem to have made it worse. Dex is rock solid when I plug the phone into my pc/laptop and use it via windows. Just not with an external screen for some reason.
Samsung will eventually fix it with an update, probably. Try clearing the system cache but a factory reset may be needed after a major firmware upgrade. May or may not resolve the issue. You could probably roll it back as well.
I have two N10+'s, both snaps; one still running on Android 9, the newest on 10. Neither will likely ever be upgraded. They are fast, stable and are fulfilling their mission. Security simply isn't an issue. I have very little to gain and a lot to lose by upgrading... so I don't. The current load on the oldest N10+ is now over 2.5 yo, last firmware update was over 3 years ago. It still runs like a bat out of hell.
Mine is running g Android 12 with OneUI 4.1

You should be able to roll back to 11 if you want to.
Here is a video of what I mean when I say flaky. My tablet using the exact same cables and hub is rock solid
