Double Tap To Wake Broken - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I have two Pixel 2 XL's in my house on the Oct 5th update and both have issues with double tap to wake. I've done all the trouble shooting I can think of and nothing I've done gets it to work. When I go to the gestures settings DTTW is actually grayed out. Anyone else having this issue? Is there a fix?
Thanks

You need to turn off Always On Display in order to change it to on or off. Don't know why it's like that but it is.

Well that's weird since I've used the AOD since I've had my P2XL for a year and never had issues with DTTW. I guess it's one of the new "amazing" and "innovative" "features" with the new update! Thanks Google for making my phone less functional! <3
BTW, thanks for letting me know what the issue is.

For anyone else who happens to read this -- in order to get DTTW to work again you may have to disable AOD, then disable DTTW and restart. Then reenable DTTW and then reenable AOD. This is what I had to do to get DTTW to work again. Just simply disabling AOD and toggling DTTW would not work.

Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. It's been frustrating me for days and I couldn't figure it out. My mother will especially thank you since she uses DTTW a lot and was complaining to me the other day about it not working.

Weird how it happened to both of your phones in your house. I never had to adjust mine but maybe because mine was always set to on to begin with. I bet by default AOD on kept DTTW on as well but no longer. Really, there's no need for DTTW to be greyed out either way.

Both our phones had both features set to on since we've had them since last November. Nothing was ever changed but it seems like at the same time both our phones DTTW feature stopped working in September. I'm thinking something in the September update screwed things up.

Gmail Using Battery Notification...

So, I've found that in order to get notifications from Gmail as they come in (I have to have this for my job), it cannot be added to data saver, and it cannot be optimized in battery settings. So, I set it up this way on my new phone, only to get a notification saying Gmail is using battery pretty much every single time an email comes through, sometimes even when none do... If I optimize it, my notifications stop until I hit the power button or unlock the phone (usually).
I cannot seem to figure out how to stop this stupid popup from happening. Anyone else getting this? Anyone know how to make it go away? It's driving me crazy...
Install this app. It's been working fine for me on my pixel 2 xl and previously worked on my 6P after installing 8.0.

Sweet, thanks! Is there a reason why the Pixel does this? My s7 edge did not. I'm assuming it is something Sammy turned off, or maybe it's Oreo.

It started with Oreo.
This was happening on my XL 2 as well, but all it took was catching one of the notifications, sliding to the right and selecting the settings icon, then turning off notifications. I have not seen one pop up since, and my Exchange emails are still coming through fine.

Active display keeps turning off

I'm not sure what changed, but active display with start off on, then disappear. A reboot didn't help
Edit: double tap to wake also stopped working

Sounds like it could be a proximity sensor issue. Maybe it's somehow covered by your case or screen protector so the phone thinks it's in your pocket all the time? Just a thought.

Sounds like a software glitch. Bout all I can suggest is a factory reset, or flash the factory image. Was this a result of an ota or did you update it?
same happens to mine. It happens when the battery is low, but at "random" times too. It's like the AOD app in dozing.

I was not posting that I have an issue with aod, but rather help those with it to trouble shoot and resolve their issue.
Nope I don't use battery saver. Another issue I noticed that started with 8.1 is that my AOD will rotate to landscape sometimes. I've been having other issues recently too, may try for an RMA soon. My sketchy GPS is getting on my nerves

!! 7 attempts at swiping up !

Maybe it's just the screen protector, I know I've read some stuff about the screen protector and people rooting and flashing something, but I swear this thing doesn't respond to my touch. I'm on Android p DP 2 and just factory reset it to see if it helps with some app bugs. Just swiped up 7 times before it went up so I could type my pin in, this has been an issue with this particular device.

I have noticed this sometimes as well on DP2. I have a fingerprint setup but my phone is usually lying on my desk so i swipe up and enter the pattern. Sometimes it just refuses to swipe up and stay there.. its sort of bounces back down. I have to pick up the phone and use the fingerprint scanner.
They lock screen swipe issue was fixed for me recently on a security update but on dp2 sometimes it's worst then it ever was before the fix.
Just tap the lock, no need to swipe
Ah never noticed that. If you have the fingerprint enabled, tap the fingerprint icon.

And this is why you're a senior member, that's pretty helpful. Now swiping away notifications would be wonderful
amazes me that people run essentially a beta version of the software and complain when things arent working correctly.

Are they not allowed to test and provide feedback? Why does it bother you?
Anyways, to be fair, I've been experiencing this issue off and on ever since I purchased the phone. And no, I'm not running beta firmware.
Why does it bother you if I comment?
If you're running a version of Android that hasn't been officially released yet then there is always going to be issues. That's pretty obvious frankly.
The lockscreen swiping is definitely an issue with the Pixel 2 XL. I always had this issue on Oreo but on P DP2 it's gone. It's interesting how it's the opposite for others in this thread.
Even on Oreo, it's hit or miss.
Swiping away notifications almost always takes at least 2-3 tries.
Super annoying for a phone this expensive.

Oreo Lock Screen Fix (Substratum) from Arol Wright fixed it for me.

You seem very passionate about this issue so let me clarify... It's been an issue the entire life of this phone ON ANY AND ALL SOFTWARE.

To be fair....even before I jumped on dp2....I had these same lockscreen issues on Oreo. It's just worse on dp2.

Nope, No issues on mine
Yeah the swipe up issue definitely does happen once in a while for me but it's not often or consistent. Now that I know the tap the fingerprint/lock does the same thing, I just do that.

No issues here. If i'm looking for perfection ill go purchase one of those $25,000 phones and even then you'll find something wrong.

Proximity Sensor still not working

I'm so fed up with these phones.
Is anyone else still having issues where when you go to make a call the screen goes black and you can't get out of it? No way to get into speakerphone mode, no way to hang up the call, no way to do a thing even after the call is finished.
This is with the June update which supposedly fix this issue.
If anyone has any insight I really appreciate it.
Never had the issue while on Oreo or while now on Android P DP3. Do you have a screen protector on it? Even pressing the power button doesn't wake the screen up while in call?

No screen protector, and nope. Even power button won't get me back.
Very strange. It's replicable with every phone call? Any 3rd party dialer or display adjustment apps that you may be using that could affect it?

I know you probably already did this but make sure your screen is clean around the sensor area, I've had a false reading before when the top of my screen was dirty.

I had the same issue a few months back. Did the online support and they RMA'd it.
It seems it was TrueCaller causing the issues. Thanks for all the advice guys!

I had the problem with the proximity in dp3 it would not turn off while I was on the phone! After doing a FDR it worked great!
I had a feel you might've been using that or something similar. Glad you got it figured out.

I have gone the whole day testing this issue.
I hard reset my phone 3 times and tested this.
On every hard reset and fresh start the proximity sensor works perfectly well, as soon as I install true caller, the dead screen issue starts.
But I use truecaller without any problems on my other 3 non pixel phone without any issues. This problem is only with the pixel 2 and pixel 2 XL.
There is no resolution as of now. Does anyone know of anyways to get this resolved ?

I stopped using the pro version for issues I can't recall.

Screen On/Off Animation Lag

The 3 XL has a really neat transition animation when you press the power button or double tap to wake, where your notifications kind of unfurl on your lockscreen.
Trouble is, I'm getting laggy animations 80% of the time. On occasion and for no apparent reason, it works and is fluid and smooth, but otherwise it's really choppy and stuttery. It's almost as if the phone is struggling to wake up properly.
Anyone else experiencing this? I noticed this pre-root, after root and on both stock & EX kernels. Rebooting the phone does not fix it, and it doesn't matter if the AOD option is on or off.
Yeps me to (
seeing some lag with the notifications on the lock screen, Don't know what could be triggering it
Same problem here on regular pixel 3, except it happens everywhere throughout the UI. I even got them to send a replacement device and it had the same issue. Really frustrating. Neither my pixel 1 or 2 had this issue.

I'm facing the same issue. It's especially apparent when there are notifications on screen. Swiping a notification away looks incredibly laggy and painful. Really odd.

Does that happen with the December patch ?
I had a similar problem on my Pixel 2 xl when I would pull down the notification shade. Turned out it was Pokemon go. Every time I had a notification from that app it would do it. The second I swiped it away it would go back to being fluid. I haven't installed it on my 3 xl.
Might want to swipe a notification away and see if that fixes it. Maybe something is weird with one app

I can confirm I'm still getting the issue with the December update...
I've noticed it's most evident/prominent when I'm on 4G/mobile network. When I'm connected to a WiFi network, it's almost always fluid. Weird...
I'm still getting the problem with the january update, I also present problems with the fingerprint reader when activating gestures, it doesn't always work
Anyone have further information on this. Really laggy compared to my 2xl. Same issue booting into safe mode as well

I also get this issue. Anytime I start seeing a bunch of lag, I always have a notification from Poke'mon GO. Once I clear it the lag goes away.

I have exactly the same issue on my Pixel 2XL, manage to fix it by disabling Google Feed on the left of the main home screen. Try it let me know if it works
