[QUESTION] Questions about Nokia Lumia 930 - Windows 10 Mobile

Hello, I happen to have a Nokia Lumia 930 (which I thought I lost long ago, but found recently).
My main question is what to do with this phone? I know I can update it to use W10 Mobile (even Insider versions, apparently). However that's all I know.
What can and cannot be done in this phone? I don't know if WPInternals supports it, since it's not in the list of supported phones, but I've read all around that WPInternals supports all W10 Mobile phones, so I don't know anymore.
What are some of the things that can be done with this model?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I still play Asphalt 8 in this device, as I had some progress there. Other than that, it's still a nice camera phone with 20MP. W10 mobile left behind some enjoyment of Here Maps and featured Lumia apps, but I guess it's necessary due to security and compatibility issues.
As Windows is no longer developing this mobile platform, don't expect much on any updates on the existing apps. NFC is nothing without support from apps. Many downside on apps availability compared to Android's, i.e. PUBG, even YouTube is not officially available. You can however, maximize the use of Microsoft apps, such as Word, Excel, One Note, Outlook, Edge, but again, they're also available in Android. FYI, WhatsApp has limited feature in this version, probably some other apps also.
In the end, you can still utilize it as a music player, movie player, ebook reader, file downloader, 32GB USB data storage. That's all from me I guess.

The only for the Nokia 930 is the astoria build and wpinternals is dangerous.. be careful Also for the "Astoria" build .But if u want to try it you ll need this. if you want to go back to original firmware you should connect to PC ur 930 and in WPinternals under download press 'download all' to get original ffu for flashing. or visit Lumia firmware on browser and grab ur stock ffu and flash it with wpid in flash mode

Not exactly. The active upgrade path goes up the "Anniversary Update" (1607)....
... and spoofing a 950 (registry editing) enable you to go up to "FCU" (1709).
It runs like a charm.

PC Software –How to Run on Win Mobile?

I was wondering, tht when buying a new smartphone if I go with windows based OS on mobile, will I be able to run any software tht can run on windows based desktop computer? If not, such functionality is expected to come with forthcoming Windows 8 mobile?
PS: I wana run my live stock market terminal on mobile phone.
Since ver 7, the os is no longer called windows mobile; its now called windows phone. but to answer your question, no you can't run desktop applications on windows phone (or windows mobile for that matter) and this is unlikely to change.
That said I'm sure you can find another application to achieve whatever it is that you're after on the marketplace...
:-( my all needs are getting completed with an smartphone, but i guess eventually i will have to buy a laptop as well... just to run my stockmarket software.... Damn and they are telling smartphones (Like SGS2 etc.) are quickly replacing laptops...
PS: Wht is the latest ver. of windows phone called and, what is the windows phone marketplace url (Kind of new to smartphones)
Well for a lot of people smartphones or tablets can replace computers, most people aren't stockbrokers!
The latest version of Windows Phone is 7.5 Mango, which is currently at RTM stage - i.e. released to OEMs pending approval for new devices and upgrades to existing devices.
The Windows Phone Marketplace can only be accessed via the phone or via the Zune desktop software. The Zune software comes highly recommended from me, it's a very, very good media management software and I can't live without the wireless sync function anymore!
You can browse the marketplace through Zune without owning a Windows Phone device.
Perhaps you could let the community know what it is exactly that you need to do and someone might be able to suggest something?
EDIT: As you're new to smartphones, from a usability perspective Windows Phone 7 would be an excellent choice for you - it is simply brilliant to use, the interface is understated and elegant and the lack of pointless graphics makes it both simple and quick. Microsoft have clearly put massive effort into making Windows Phone highly usable and have surpassed pretty much all expectations, especially with the 7.5 update, which brings in a huge amount of functionality. A lot of people try and put Windows Phone down having never used it, because it's one of those things that needs you to spend 10 minutes with it to understand - but once you've spent 9 minutes with it, everything else just seems ridiculously complicated.

Silverlight in Windows
Hi
Silverlight apps are currently available in Windows and I think that the concept being put out there at the moment is that Windows 8 will run the same apps as Windows Mobile 8.
Nobody knows if this will become a reality or not.
Cheers

The best thing for you to do would be to find a mobile version of the software you are trying to run. Then get the device that runs that particular software.
The closest you'll come to running your "exact" software on a mobile device is to get a Windows based tablet or laptop. But to run your stock software on a smartphone, you will need the "mobile" version of that software, if it exists.
Also, check to see if your stock-terminal application is web-based. If it is, you may be able to access what you need with ANY smartphone through the smartphone's web browser. That means your "stock terminal" would work on Windows Phone, iPhone, Android, etc.

[Guide][Windows 10 Mobile] How to reinstall the Glance screen app

Is the Glance screen not compatible with Windows 10 Mobile? Not any more
No Interop required
Simply enable developer mode
Sideload the XAP a do not open it
Open Store on GS app and click Update
When error will occur , unistall the XAP form the app list
Keep pressing the Arrow and go back to the Store
Click the Refresh button
All done

Hello, can you do same thing with Glance Backround
https://www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/store/apps/glance-background/9wzdncrfhw46#
It is still possible to get it from the Store
Interesting approach, and it really works (the part of installing it). But once I open it, the drop downs are empty, the toggle buttons are all switched off, and if I touch anything, the app crashes.

Strange, i can"t.
It says This app is not more available.
Official .164 on lumia 640ds
Glance Background app is useless in W10M and thats why is removed.... not such loss... if your device support pictures on glance screen you can add it via glance settings.. no need for any app..
I only needed to open the Store and go to the list of apps and here I clicked on the arrow to download the app
Sorry it might be a late question, but I have tried your XAP on L1020 running latest Redstone build 14393, but can't deploy xap, gives me the error: WMAppManifest is invalid. Might you know how to fix it?
read the last 2-3 pages of this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...indows-mobile-10-redstone-rs1-build-t3319375/

my glance still not working after copying files, setting up registry and reinstall of glance.appx on my Lumia [email protected]
Can I use glance screen on my Lumia 525?? I installed it but it's not opening...
Lumia 535 support Glance out-of-box?
Tried with Lumia 925 with W10 AU, but still Glance crashes
Copying missing files and using latest Interop Tools to enable the Registry entries automatically works on my wife's Lumia 920 with W10M AU. On my Lumia 640 I can't get it to use the old Glance App, but maybe this is due to different hardware not supported by the app? I can't remember if it ever had the old app that shows battery charging icon. But the hack is definitely working on 920 (which had lost Glance when I updated it o AU).
Works on my L925

Works with my L925 (masked under 950) just fine. Used new Interop (which adds all missing par. to reg. in an easy way) add missing dll files and lpm fonts (including old 3.6.1.13 version!) to due (Data\SharedData etc. etc.) folder.
BTW double tap awake, hotspot... all works well. Only problem reported by others and actual with my 925 is panorama mode crash with MS camera but old Lumia Panorama app works just fine.
P.S. Glance version 4.1.151.0 working on RS1 14393.103

Yep. Connect Lumia thru USB in mass storage mode and copy.
Interop Tools required to activate mass storage mode. 4 or 5 dll files and 3-4 folders. There is a zip file somewhere on this forum as I remember or maybe got it from Windowscentral forum.
Only thing is that had to download some. First zip did not work as was incomplete - one dll was missed. Maybe depends on OS and Glance version as well.
But once installed it works - since that OS got updated several times, and glance still works. :good:
I have similar problem on my phone the model is lumia 830

I wish the original glance screen app(which on installing is placed under extras) works. Kindly suggest a way for it.
And the glance background app although it gets installed,on clicking the message appears"failed to initialize Glance". The glance screen app on touching keeps on crashing☹ and as mentioned above dropdowns are empty, toggle switch is off..
Kindly guide me.

[WARNING] Do NOT use WDRT with Devices not Eligable for Windows 10

If your phone is not officially supported by Windows 10 (Lumia 520, 525, 620, 630, 635 (512 MB), 720, 820, 920, 925, 1020, 1320, ...) and you do have Windows 10 installed, do NOT use the WDRT (Windows Device Recovery Tool) which will install Windows 8.x on your device. Since Microsoft no longer offers Windows 10 Threshold releases for unsupported devices in the Release Preview Ring chances are that you'll be unable to update to Windows 10 again.
Further reading:

Of versions and branches - the evolving story of Windows Phone and Windows 10
seems to be a fact since ms introduced the release-preview-ring for redstone. we will see if they offer something like a legacy ring soon
otherwise: still no problem, or lets say still no problem to spoof the devices to get either th2 or redstone
Changing the registry might be beyond users that were only accustomed to joining the Release Preview Ring with the Windows Insider app till now. Some also might not even try out of fear. Thus this warning.
Thanks for the heads up!

thats one of the downsides of the insider-programm. ms let anyone in, thus many many many many people doing stuff they dont know jack**** about. they should have done a simple tech-survey before they let some into the insiderprogramm
Lets go an other route. Instead of keeping people out we should do our best to educate those, that aren't aware of possible side effects and pitfalls. In this sentiment, a call for help: Gather information!
- which devices is WPinternals able to handle?
- what SLB3s are available? Download links?
- Write up a tutorial on how to edit the phones registry using mass storage mode and regedit!
- Gather confirmed info on what unlock methods are available for what RMs!
- Anything to add to the first post? Something to clarify to make it better understandable?
- ...
- ... Profit!
Don't be worry guys, Custom ROMs coming ....
Cool if custom ROMs can be released, but it may be too late for some phones stuck on WP8.1 if they are not hackable. Obviously old Lumias are hackable, but what about 630 for example? Also, some way to install custom ROMs without going back to WP8.1 is sorely needed now.
the 630 for example is no problem either, we dont have any engineering bootloader for it yes. but it has a sd-slot, so no problems to fool around with registry tools to spoof the device id. since its 512mb redstone shouldnt work, but there should be a few devices out which are getting 10 but not redstone as well. so simple spoof it as one of them and get th2 (speaking of the situation next week, right now you could use any "modern" lumia settings to get th2 via upgrade advisor). but no way to build custom roms, thats only supported on 520, 521, 525, 620, 625, 720, 820, 920, 925, 928, 1020 and 1320
Hmmm I used WDRT couple of days back. And now I am stuck with Windows Mobile 8.1. Any chance of getting Windows 10 Mobile back on my L720?

Yes, you can use wpinternals to unlock the bootloader, gain full filesystem access, and spoof the registry with a phone model supported for W10M. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-phone-8/development/windows-phone-internals-unlock-t3257483

They will replace th2 with rs1. We wont be able to upgrade to W10 using insider or upgrade advisor. We're gonna stuck in WP 8.1 forever.
would you please read my post completely? atm its still possible and in the future it will be still possible to get th2 cause not every device will get the anniversary update (looking at some chinese oem devices). and rs1 runs way better even on ancient devices like the 920 than th2. and right now you still are able to get th2 and back it up with wpinternals if you want to reflash it in the future

Sorry, I didnt mention that I'm talking about 630. I don't think ms will add a new ring like "TH2 for legacy devices" because they really wanna get rid of Nokia devices.
we dont know that, but as i said: there will be still devices which got th2 officially but will not get rs1. u simply need to spoof your device to that. and th2 might be even a needed hop to go from 8.1 to 10 rs1. so dont panic

Microsoft don't expect divvys to tamper with tools they don't understand , a simple insider upgrade is divvy safe, theres no need for any tech surveys or whatever, theres nothing in the OS that can break the phone, only ppl who decide to play the tools to crack and edit the registry are at risk. You don't need to be an insider to play with those tools either. Think about it. The wdrt is very powerful, you can spoof your phone and model ID if you wish, (NOT RECOMMENDED FOR DIVVYS) downside of that is ...loading an OS that could be slightly modified and potentially brick your device
Microsoft clarification
Earlier this year when we launched Windows 10 Mobile, we announced a series of changes to Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Program, including details of our launch of Windows 10 Mobile as well as changes to the supported Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview devices.
With the upcoming release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the Release Preview ring is moving to Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 14393. This change will have some impact on unsupported device:
As stated before, unsupported devices will not receive any builds or updates newer than 10586.x
Unsupported devices will not be able to select any Windows Insider Preview rings in the Windows Insider app
Updates to apps and services may not be available for unsupported devices and in some cases may limit certain experiences
Unsupported devices can still use the Windows Device Recovery Tool to recover to Windows Phone 8.1, but will not have the option to return to Windows 10 Mobile.
As always, we appreciate our Insiders and thank you for your participation in the Windows Insider Program.

Lumia 1020 RS1 and DNG photos: gallery and Onedrive bugs!

Hi all,
I have updated a Lumia 1020 to Redstone 1 (14393.321) and everything is working fine (much faster than TH2, better battery life, glance reenabled): the only problems that I have found involve the management of the RAW DNG photos:
When I take a photo with the Lumia Camera (5MP + 38MP DNG), both pictures are showed in the Photo App even if I select the option to aggregate duplicated files (see pictures in the URL below). In TH2 (10586.545) the Photo App was working as expected.
http://it.tinypic.com/r/2rrxvuu/9
http://it.tinypic.com/r/156b7lf/9
On W10M (both TH2 and RS1) Onedrive automatically upload both the low resolution 5MP jpg and the 38MP (and 48mb) DNG files: with Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 wasn't possible to upload the RAW files, now is impossible to prevent them to be forcefully uploaded filling Onedrive and discharging the phone...
Does this happen on your unsupported Lumia shooting raw photos too? Have anyone found some solution or workaround (at least for the Photo App)? Any idea?
Lumia Camera
Hello, can you share info how to manage to use the Lumia Camera App on the RS1 Update?
I bought Lumia 1020 yesterday and updated it to the last officially released W10 Update and did hard reset after that.
After the hard reset I am the Lumia Camera app was deleted and there is no option installing it from the store, however I did found some xap files with the Lumia Camera but after installing it the app says that I need Lumia Denim Update to use the app, and after it the app closes.
I did a hard reset yesterday on my 1020. Afterwards I just searched for Lumia Camera in the W10M app store and installed it, then set it as the default camera app. Doesn't this work for you? Current build number is 1493.576 on my 1020.
Do you notice degraded quality of photography compared to WP8.1?

Running the same build, but installing the Lumia Camera App from the Microsoft Store is not an option for me - it says the "app is not compatible with your device". However I found a Nokia Camera xap file, installed it and update to Lumia Camera App and now everything looks fine.
About the degraded quality, I haven't had time to check the quality with the WP8.1, cuz I updated it as soon as I bought it. However I think to reinstall and use it with the official build /WP8.1/ from now on, cuz I had experienced some bugs and delays compared to my Lumia 735 running the same build.

Hmm, strange. It's odd because when I did the hard reset, Lumia Camera did disappear from the phone, which is why I had to reinstall it. One thing is that after the hard reset, the values used to upgrade the phone (phone name etc. set to match the values of the 950XL) revert back to the values of the 1020, which maybe the store recognizes as a valid phone for running Lumia Camera? Other than that, I've no idea why the Store lets me install Lumia Camera, but doesn't let you, on the same build with the same phone model.
My feeling is that with Lumia Camera, the fidelity of the photography is very much like WP8.1. Using the Windows Camera seems to apply the famous "finishing touches" or other sharpening algorithms which don't work so well on the 1020, but Lumia Camera has the original algorithms. Well, it's just an impression. However, if you plan to use the phone essentially as a camera, and don't need any of the features of WM10, it would make sense to go back to WP8.1. For example, stereo video recording doesn't work with the 1020 on WM10 -- you get mono sound only. And things are just snappier on this phone with WP8.1. I'm just wary of losing the ability to run UWP apps if I revert the phone, but I may do anyway, as I have a 950XL as my main phone, and probably will only use the 1020 for carefully composed photography from now on. In a way, I'm curious to see how long the 1020 is still able to run W10M, if it will make it through to the Creators' Update or not, which is why I haven't reverted yet.

Yeah, it will be nice knowing if the Lumia 1020 gets the Creators' Update, well I am curious if my Lumia 735 will get it too, cuz I use it as my main driver.
About the hard reset, it went the same as you said, after it the phone was marked again like Lumia 1020 by default, so I really do not know what the store did not allow me to install it. Now everything is fine, I just put the WP8.1 on it and ready to go test it tomorrow.

Sorry for the late response, I don't know why but I haven't been notified of your responses and quotes lately... As others stated in this thread, at first Lumia Camera was still there after the RS1 upgrade (I used the 635 specs in the registry, and everything reverted back to the ones of the 1020 automatically after the RS1 upgrade), version 4.10.0.6.
After the last upgrade (149393.1066) Lumia Camera disappeared, and I tried to get it back for a simple reason: Microsoft Camera only shots in 38mp jpeg mode with the Lumia 1020, so no supersampled 5mp jpeg and 38mp DND (the two reasons for which I still stick to this old great cameraphone).
I tried to deploy the following versions of the camera to no vail, either using 8.0 and 8.1 SDK or sideloading it from the internal memory:
Lumia Camera 4: v4.8.1.1 and v4.8.4.3
Lumia Camera 5: v5.0.2.42, V5.1.1.2 and v2015.1022.1227.410
Lumia camera 5 Beta: v2015.717.1205.3383
Well, Lumia Camera 4 won't install at all, Lumia Camera 5 says the app has been deprecated and force you to open the new Microsoft Camera, and Lumia Camera 5 Beta says that you'll need the Denim update (which I obviously have but it is not recognized).
As said by zagiame, the only way that worked was to install this special version of the old Nokia Camera (v.4.5.1.7) offered by WindowsMania.pl and then update it through the Microsoft Store to the latest version (v4.10.0.6):
http://www.windowsmania.pl/programy-504/%5Bxap-x2x%5D-nokia-camera-rs2-1-th2-spust-aparatu-31271/
Hope this will help somene!
ps: anyhow, even if I get back my 5mp jpeg and 38mp DNG, I still have the annoying problems described in the fist post (Onedrive upload and Galeery display of the DNG photos)!

As said by zagiame, the only way that worked was to install this special version of the old Nokia Camera (v.4.5.1.7) offered by WindowsMania.pl and then update it through the Microsoft Store to the latest version (v4.10.0.6):

You'll have to register to the site, then log in and put a "thank" to the first post: once you have done this, refresh the page and the download link will be visible. I have done this myself (I'm italian and I don't understand a single word of polish, but I have translated the whole registration page with google translate in english and then used it as a template to compile the real registration page in polish language).
If you encounter any problems write me back here!

Thanks! I registered and downloaded, it installed fine. But the Store app does not find any updates, so I can't install the new version.

Perfect, so now you have Nokia Camera v4.5, right? Have you tried to reboot the phone and search again (I suppose yes). Which device do you have? If you have an unsupported x2x phone, which registry infos have you changed to update to Redstone? Are they been reverted back to the original ones (if the Store recognize your device as a x50, Lumia Camera Classic won't be available)?

Yes, I have installed the old Nokia Camera 4.5, but it won't start. I have a Lumia 1020, and Lumia Camera has been available from the Store until the latest RS2 (Creators update) build. When I installed RS2 RTM build it removed Lumia Camera from phone. So I did a reset so my registry values are now default for 1020. So the problem with Lumia Camera being "not compatible" in the Store came with RS2 for me.
But I hope there is a way to get the latest Lumia Camera to install with a XAP or APPX.
So Nokia Camera is unable to start... Maybe it is a limit imposed by the RTM of Creators Update... I have a 1020 like you and I have done this procedure just two days ago: untill the last RS1 update, Lumia Camera was always there after the various upgrades. With the last RS1 update (149393.1066) by the way, Lumia Camera disappeared and wasn't possible to reinstall it throught the store: the only way was using that XAP, installing it from the internal memory. If you have done everything like me, maybe the culprit is of the CU... And that means no CU for the 1020! Let me know if you take the time to make some test and find uot if with RS1 is still usable.

A very strange thing just happened. I had the old Nokia Camera 4.5 installed which did not start and checking for updates in the Store didn't find any updates at all. Now when I hadn't touched the phone for two hours, Lumia Camera appeared in the newly installed list, and somehow the old Nokia Camera 4.5 has been updated to Lumia Camera 4.10.0.6! I have auto updates turned off and it's not mentioned in the update history list.

Good to know that everything updated as it should... Sometimes the store is not reliable: just wait for a few hours and it may change idea about what you may or may not install.
Going back to my initial problems, I thought that they were due to the fact that the 1020 was an unsupported RS1 phone (as said, everything worked fine on TH2). Now I'm testing also a Lumia 950 and it shows the same behaviour when shooting photos in both jpeg and DNG format. I have done some research (http://forums.windowscentral.com/ask-question/440536-duplicate-photos.htmlhttp://) and it seem like:
1) for what concernes the duplicated photos in the gallery (both jpeg and DNG showed), it is a known bug of the "aggregate duplicated files" function of the Photo App that it's not working as it should.
2) for the automatic upload af both jpeg and DNG photos in OneDrive, it is a wanted behaviour. I still think that Microsoft should give us the choice about what we want to upload, especially thinking of the actual 5gb space limit of the free onedrive offer.
I'm using the feedback hub to report these problems to Microsoft, just in case they decide they still care about the W10 Mobile platform...

Can you give me your XAP file for Lumia Camera please !?

[Theory] Methods for Android App emulation or restoring "Astoria"

I'm new to Windows Phone and I'm getting my L 950 soon but I've been doing a lot of research recently about "Project Astoria" and the apps Windows Phone is lacking, while I can live without them I still think had MS kept this feature it would've gained them more customers (this was going to be the reason why I considered buying a year or so ago when it was announced). Now before anyone tells me to get an Android, I really want to try out WP because it looks cool and slick and has all the MS apps one would need, minus Google Apps and some Android apps, which are a must for some.
P.S. I really enjoy modding and doing things not normally possible, I almost do this on every device I own even game consoles.
TLDR; So the theories would be as follows:
Downgrading phones to ROMs that had Project Astoria Aka 10240? Which had it for a few phones
Creating a custom rom with Astoria libraries and files to re-enable the function
Wait for the rumoured x86 emulation on ARM, this'll mean we might be able to get BlueStacks or a similar app running through emulation, so emlation in emulation in emulation, lol.
Pray and hope for Microsoft to restore Project Astoria.
Thoughts?
This isn't possible due to MS actually having a CI whitelist for services, and the key component of astoria actually is blacklisted on newer builds, starting the service won't work at all.
Since it's about theories why don't developers try something like android emulation on a website

Then why not just use the actual company/app website?
Kernel is unlikely to support ADSS as a pico provider anymore. The Kernel only allows a single pico provider to be installed and it's hard coded to be LXSS for desktop. Wouldn't be surprised if it's now set to LXSS in the mobile builds too, if it's allowed at all. It's quite possible the pico provider interfaces have changed since the last build with ADSS in it The LXSS kernel devs are unlikely to care at all about keeping compatibility with year old ADSS.
BTW The Field Medic application still have ETW provider "Windows_Brigde_for_Android" available I hope Microsoft will not make it standard feature becasue I want to stay isolated from the Google always-vulnerable-crap pathetic OS as much as possible. That's why I use Microsoft OS and services.
can i downgrade my lumia 730 DS and install the build supporting project astoria..?? will it work n how to go to that build??? suggestions needed!!

i dont understand why people want this back... project astoria apps worked terrible, much worse than MS apps.... if you want android apps, buy frikin' android phone.
There are a couple of possibilities to use astoria:
10240 ROM works on: Lumia 640, 640 XL, 930
Insider Versions 10149 / 10166 (10512, 10514, 10536) works on: Pretty much any Lumia / Phone released before the launch of TH2.
