Can my S9 be rooted or not? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hi guys, Im sorry if this is a silly question, I'm not an expert, I remember when it was fairly easy to flash custom roms back in the days of S2, S4... but now things have changed so much that personally I get confused between this many versions and variants... I have read along many posts that suggest my S9 can not be rooted, because of locked bootloader, but I have some mixed up settings(I think) in my S9 that doesn't help me to be completely sure.
My S9 has the model SM-G960U printed on the back., but in my Settings under Device Information, my model displayed is SM-6960U1 and my build number is R16NW.G960U1UES3ARI1; I just want to know if I can really root it, I don't intend to flash custom roms to be honest, Im satisfied with just to be able to root, install my TitaniumBackUp Pro and freeze/defrost apps I use from time to time, I have read also the people root their S9 but lacking vowifi or camera performance, but I don't know if that would apply to me.
Also, I tapped the build number 7 times in order to enable Developer options, and I couldn't find OEM Unlock on it, that is not good isn't?
I just got this S9, hence my caution to ask before jump and flash things that could brick it.
Thanks in advance!!

There's nothing to flash because the bootloader is locked.

Yes. There are some snapdragon variants that can be unlocked (9600) and they're sold in China and South America afaik. Limited support but there is lineage and twrp here.

Sorry for the huge delay, this has been a rough week for me, and many thanks for your answers.
it really sucks though, and I suppose there's not much hope in a possible way to unlock the bootloader in the future?
I'm not that good seller nor I have the will to actually put it on sell, I assume I will have to accept the fact that I won't be able to root this one ever :/

Snapdragon bootloaders have not been unlocked since at least the S7 days (Maybe earlier), buy a Exynos S9 if you want and unlocked BL

I used to root all the time. But don't see the need some the S7. Phones are so optimized stock. I've never needed to. Granted I do miss CMMod

I used to do a lot of Moto tweaking and they're among the easiest but I no longer root or even want to. Though there are a couple of things I miss like Titanium Backup.

Oh sh**, so do you think there will most definitely be a BL unlock in the coming weeks/months? By looks of that I can definitely say yes to root, but BL looks pretty solid too.

I can't answer that one, only time will tell. I came from Samsung so I'm pretty skeptical when it comes to bootloader unlocking. I would love to see it though.

I'd be coming from Samsung too then, have a S6 and the battery bug has totally ruined it for me. I also have a $520 offer out on a G4 brand new in box right now, keeping my fingers crossed its accepted before someone else buys it haha. The root + potential of a BL unlock on the way definitely gave me the extra push I needed besides SD card and extra batteries!
I don't think any of the LGs ever were Bootloader unlocked. ALTHOUGH we just used hacks to bypass the lock and install a custom recovery. I had a Verizon G2 and rooting was pretty straight up, but Lollipop is a tough cookie to crack.
Fortunately the Stock LG roms are pretty slim and work very well. I used Stock LG on the G2 the entire 2 years. It was just super stable and had features that you couldn't find anywhere else.
No Root or BL access as of yet. All of our Devs have Root Access, it is just a matter of them attempting to package it in a safe and noob friendly process before the gen. population gets their hands on it, so just be patient and remember, Rome was not built in a day.

Canadian v522 custom support?

I'm getting a tablet from Rogers this week so I'm doing some research
To see what kind of support there is for customization of the v522 lg g pad 3 8.0
Can we root it?
Custom recovery?
Any roms that are compatible across models?
Thanks for any info
What I have read so far is a bit old and confusing (calling the Canadiann model 521 not 522 etc)
This website claims that it is rootable... but i trust xda a not random websites found with Google
Can any one report if this works?
(I would try it myself but my tablet is a gift and I don't have a receipt for warranty(and it's a hour drive to anywhere that might warranty it from my small town ))
https://giveawaytricks.in/root-install-twrp-recovery-lg-g-pad-x-8-0/
PREREQUISITE TO ROOT AND INSTALL TWRP RECOVERY FOR LG G PAD X 8.0 :
This TWRP is for LG G Pad X 8.0 (V521, V522, V525)
You need a Laptop or PC
Charge your phone to at least 70%
It has downloads. For the 521 tmobile rom which they claim you can install on the 522 and 525
And twrp for the 521 also they claim you should use flashify to install the recovery.
Now I know lots of devices can use other similar model recovery and roms..
But I trust xda to verify and lead the way for custom devices not a web site like this.
This post on xda mentions that the boot loader for Canada is not unlockable
(If I read it right)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-...guide-lg-v521-t-mobile-version-t3443747/page8
Was wanting to ask the same question, I looked everywhere and no clear answer? For my phones it was really straight forward and I had a redmi and lemax, not exactly the most popular phones... looks like we're out of luck?
There was a new exploit found that might be used to get root.
It is called "dirty cow" now if we can get one of the wizard like developers to see if this can be used to root this device (And others that are hard to root)
Here is some more info about the dirty cow exploit. Not sure if this can be used to root the 522 or others.at least not permanently. But it might lead to a method to do so

Would be nice if 522 and 521 are compatible kind a like all those Samsung phones.

Carrier phones and tablets in the US, including Samsung phones are never compatible with other variants.
Only international Samsung phones like in the Europe or Asia may be compatible with other variants.

I have the Samsung S4 which had a couple of variant, mine was jtfxxx and later on able to just flash the jtflte. I'm not saying all of them would work, but normally those with only last digit differences should. There were I9500, 9509, 9506, 9515, i think they were all compatible.

None of those are from US carriers. My point is that don't expect any US carrier devices, including Samsung devices, to be compatible with other variants or vice versa.
Also for Samsung devices, those with only last digit difference should not be compatible, as soon as they are US variants.
Like the note series, US variants N920T, N920V, N920P are not compatible with any other N920x, even though they differ by only the last digit.
If you mean custom Roms like Cyanogenmod, the developers can make one rom to fit multiple variants with same chip set. If so, it has nothing to do with LG or Samsung. CM Roms can also be compatible with multiple variants for LG devices, like the L90, even though they have completely different model numbers.
Just wondering if there is any further developments on rooting the Canadian LG Gpad III,
I too am looking at picking one of these up as they're getting pretty decent reviews and would like to root it too.
Anything in terms of new development here?
Anyone root this tab yet?

Based on my research our v522 has a locked bootloader.
Not one youtube video.
All research for me has pointed to it not working. Which is terrible because this device is lacking in its full potential. Was able to get adaptable storage working, make sure you have a u3 speed SD card this way apps on SD card will load faster and not lag.

Can all/any Galaxy S9 get root and custom ROM

I'm looking for a new phone and considering a carrier branded one. In the past I've had bad experiences with this as they tend to be more locked down and restricted then when I get phones off Amazon.
Can all Galaxy S9 be rooted?
Can all Galaxy S9 be bootloader unlocked to install custom ROM?

So you're basically telling me there will be no development for this phone? I'm surprised as it would seem Snapdragon is much more common Exynos yet without Exynos you're screwed. There isn't much customization that can be done without it.

If you had looked in the Exynos dev forum and the Snapdragon forum you would see a distinct lack of custom ROMs for the snapdragon, there are only 2 Chinese model SD S9s that are bootloader unlocked, all the US models are locked, this has been the case since at least the S7, possibly earlier, think there was some engineer ROM or something for the S7 that allowed root, but it was a battery hog
Bootloader locked = No development
But tbh if you want to go custom ROMs, I wouldn't buy a Samsung anyway, they make it a PITA to do anything custom these days and you lose warranty, trip KNOX, certain things stop working, can't get good camera quality with non TouchWiz ROMs, etc etc
Agreed Samsung is a pain to customize and yea the S7 never got an unlocked bootloader they had an engineered bootloader that allowed root and a stock custom rom the battery wasn't as bad as most people made it seem honestly, but I do believe the Latin American snapdragon is unlocked as well I believe not just the Chinese variant correct me if I'm wrong?

Up until the G5, the last I owned I always considered Motorola G phones the easiest.
Nah Samsung is actually one of the harder ones to modify bc Samsung doesn't run pure android and they heavily modified it and not to mention all the extra security stuff Samsung added and the fact the international variant runs Samsungs own hardware makes a bit more tricky customize and modify. Don't get me wrong i will admit Samsung phones are some of the best there is out there but to modify it takes a little more know how. But in terms of easiest to modify and unlocking the bootloader you're best off just getting a Google Pixel bc it runs pure stock android and Google never locks the bootloader. (Just don't get one from Verizon or AT&T they do lock the bootloaders on all there phones)

Im with you , I always rooted my devices since I had a G1 (HTC Dream). Since Pie was released, and custom launchers are so good these days, I haven't bothered with any of my devices
....I do miss being able to remove system apps though (truly remove them) ahhh memories of the days when CyanogenMod was what a person would do immediately after getting a new device ....
I don't miss the headaches , the bugs, the constant flashing new roms, the constant clockworkmod/TWRP backups and restores ...
Android is now so polished that I honestly see no need for root anymore
The only need for root I have is getting my Proxmark to work with my phone.
I miss gravity box that's it
root is so much funner though lol

Is this still the only way to root on the U.S. variants? I have seen this floating around for some time and while I have nothing but respect for the developer of this method, I have never paid for unlocking or root and don't want to begin. I would like root, but my desire is not so strong so as to pay $100 to obtain it.
My last rooting experience was with the ENG kernel on my S7 Edge. It sucked. LOL. I know what you've linked isn't a root service but an unlock, however after growing tired of the instability with the ENG kernel I eventually went stock. So now I've been without root for a couple years and have learned to live with it, which is why I don't really want to pay. If that's the only way, though, so be it.

Its real. My note is unlocked and rooted.
There's warning lights flashing with this one...
As much as I like (and miss) a rooted device, I would definitely err on the side of caution with this one especially if you use your phone for sensitive and personal things. Even then, with 3 mics and all those cameras the chance of spying is great! Definitely curious if this is real to have someone use network tools to see if indeed the modded devices are leaking things they shouldn't.

So just to be clear. You can unlock the bootloader of a US Snapdragon Note 20 Ultra and all it costs is $150? Now this isn't the thing where you can only charge your phone to 80% and other stuff is it?

Had my AT&T Phone unlocked, Paid the $150, and since I did the old payment method (wire transfer) Had to wait a few days.
Fully charges, and You can flash TWRP/Root and U/U1 Roms without fear of losing Unlock. The only downside is the Bootloader being unlocked Trips Knox which disables some things like Secure Storage App and Samsung Pay and I believe Samsung Pass. I didn't use those and I have Samsung Pay on my watch which still works.
Also, the process will factory reset your phone like any bootloader unlock procedure.
Am hearing about this 150 dollars to unlock the sm-n986u bootloader, but we're is the link or company that does this?

to add some context, I now have usa source and do the unlocking myself directly (im in the usa) so no china source is involved in this process any longer.
but of course if you or anyone else has their reservations then its understandable. I wouldnt expect anyone to go through with something they are 100% on, i wouldnt either lol.
after all, my goal isnt to get paid its to offer a legit way to unlock the bl on devices that otherwise cant and of course to drive development on xda which im sure u can see theres more stuff being posted for usa models since this has become possible from twrp to mods to roms etc.

Thats awesome, I remember during my unlock waiting on the source over in China so you being able to directly do it yourself is a time saver and probably a lot easier

to add some context, I now have usa source and do the unlocking myself directly (im in the usa) so no china source is involved in this process any longer.
but of course if you or anyone else has their reservations then its understandable.
