Favorite PIE ROM? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Just curious which PIE Rom is everyone's favorite? And why?
It looking like there are a several options right now, haven't flashed a ROM since the beginning of the year. Looking for a daily driver, I don't need crazy bells and whistles. Just looking for solid reliable performance, without crappy battery life.
I will be running v4a, Google Pay, Magisk, and CF+llumen.
Thanks!

I don't really use roms on P since you're not really missing anything on the stock OS. Google did good this year.
Using a custom kernel rather than a rom on stock will allow for a snappier experience. Battery life is mainly your problem based on apps
However, if you do want to use a rom, then I recommend c-rom or liquid remix. LOS is always good as well if you prefer it

Best Vanilla combination?

I have had my Note II since launch and I have always had the stock ROM installed. I kind of miss vanilla Android OS from my Nexus so I'm looking into flashing a brand new vanilla stock rom, I have absolutely no time to look into finding the best combination of kernel/rom/radio.etc to get the best out of the note in vanilla.
What combination of ROM/Kernel/Radio..etc did you guys find best to run on the Note II and get its full potential with good stability/battery life? I use my phone heavily for productivity and I don't care much for games.

Use AOSP roms like Cyanogenmod , AOKP, Paranoid Android etc. Use a kernel that will save your battery. Make sure it is compatible with the rom. You can find it in development section

Ya I know, but which ROM out of all these coupled with a decent kernel(stock maybe) gives me the best overall experience? Has anyone tried using the Paranoid droid as their primary daily driver?
I'm sorry to say that they are all great but for different reasons. While I've toyed with AOKP and PA, it's CyanogenMod that fulfills my needs the best. My reasoning is that I am looking for a clean and simple experience in my AOSP roms. While the others may give more options, CyanogenMod make the greatest effort to stay within Google design guidelines for Android. Overall this gives the rom a feeling of being cleaner and less cluttered than the others.
Kernel wise I've found neak, perseus, and Red pill are all great. Currently using neak because the configuration app is (again) simpler than stweaks (which the other two use).

Do you get a decent batterylife?

Battery life is still quite good compared to a lot of other phones out there but noticeably worse than the stock rom. I've encountered this on all the kernels and both AOKP and CyanogenMod. Haven't tested pa extensively but I can't see it being any better than the others.

ROM recommendations

Hey,
I've been using this device for a month now. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied. I'm currently on Open Beta 14, with root, franco kernel and unlocked bootloader. However, I've noticed that I cannot pinpoint my location in Maps, and GPS doesn't seem to be the issue. The device fairly quickly locks down to the satellites according to GPS Status & Toolbox, but when I go to Maps, and click the little circle that's supposed to focus the map on my current location, nothing happens. I can't seem to figure what's the cause of this. I kinda have the feeling that I should go back to regular OTAs with possibly stock kernel/no root.
I wanted to ask, what ROM/Kernel/bootloader status/root are you using and why? Would you recommend it to me?
Pheonix AEX is by far the best rom..especially in battery life.
I get better battery than stock also is very smooth with lots of customixations +substratum
I'm using Sultan's unofficial LineageOS 14.1, with his amazing stock kernel, and no root. It is extremely stable, has great battery life (I'm getting 5-6 hours SOT, whereas on stock OOS I was getting around 4) and is really speedy.
This three are the best
1 Eliminaters RR
3 Sultans LOS 14
2 Phoenix AEX
Performance on VertexOS is top notch! It's a CAF based ROM with EAS. Battery life is also very good. Although, it doesn't havrany customization features... That's the only down side.
FreedomOS (CE),you can select most minimal ROM or some more customizations, just as you like it.
Everything is rock stable since its OOS based and paired with bluespark kernel i get around 7h SOT in everyday use.
VertexOS. It's simple like OOS.. Its receiving alot of updates also it had a really good integration of EAS and Voxpopuli the rom is simply perfect for me.. Its fast has decent battery life and simple and a dev that actually knows what he is doing and spends alot of time with the community. Incombination with Magisk it is all I need.
Slim
i always liked OOS but using Vertex converted me, great rom, the only thing you need to know is that it's as minimal as possible , that's the Dev preference, so apart from Substratum, which fully works on Vertex, it's as pure OSP as it gets, and i have Google phone latest version 9 fully working on it, battery is great specially if you played with the Voxpopuli thing , overall Solid Rom, no issues what s ever

suggest a stable Rom

Post it own opinion
so for the usual "this month's" question...i suggest freedom ce and experience os. tho each of them have their own quirk, but it's stable. maybe the issues's with me, but some custom rom really have some daily usage/stability problem like dialer app crashing or alarm not ringing while they list the rom as "bugs free". obviously i have not tried all the roms or done extensive performance testing on them, so this is just my opinion.

I personally don't use OOS since ages because of the terrible android system drain I got back then. Not sure how it is now but I basically fell in love with VertexOS. VertexOS has been the stablest rom I have tried. Even the Testbuilds on the Slack channel are really stable. The dev definitely knows what he is doing and is putting blood sweat and tears into optimizing the rom. if you are looking for a stable minimalistic rom, with great peformance and decent battery life Vertex is the way to go.
You can basically never go wrong with a Sultan rom
I sugest Sultans Nougat build(if you want theming through Substratum use Matssas builds, for me it was just as stable). Other then that AOSPA, although I sugest you wait for the next build since high idle drain is a known issue.
Both Sultan and AOSPA is known for high quality camera by custom rom standard.
Phoenix aex is the best right now. Best performance and battery life without any modifications
Go with ...Phoenix AOSP ?
Yep, Phoenix AES.
Sultanxda lineage OS is working perfectly.
Have tried RR, Phoenix, Freedom and a couple of more.. Loved all of them to be honest.. But felt experience lite was the best of them..
Yup.. Just a personal opinion..
try Paranoid Android, tons of features, great battery life and (ALMOST) bug free and stable, but keep in mind that OxygenOS or OxygenOS based roms have the most stability ...
Using freedom os + bluspark kernel + akt hawkpepper! Moderate use but too much of voice and duo calls! This combo is perfect one
And full day wifi on! Plus when not using wifi, 4G was on!
I've personally been using vertex for a few weeks now with a gapp prop tailored just to my liking for adding in just stuff I want and debloating of things I never use to clear up wasted space and absolutely love the current setup. Minimal, battery friendly, and zero issues with stability.

is it worth it to install a Custom Rom?

I rooted my phone and installed TWRP however looking at the custom ROMs , I don't know if it is a good idea at this point to install one. What are your recommendations especially in regards to fluidity, battery life, antutu scores, daily usage and everything working?

MIUI will give u the best fluidity
Battery life are pretty much the same
Antutu is pointless
Most ROMs have everything working
If you're all set you might as well test them, just remember to format data if going from MIUI to custom otherwise it will bootloop

Coming from Zuk. Z2 I'm not a newb to flashing but I haven't heard anything but issues on most ROMs I've looked at... Newer phone so makes sense but I wanted to more establish if there was stability and which ones are in fact more stable...
However if MIUI is the most fluid... Might Stick on that for another few months

I keep going back to MIUI, ABC rom seems to be the most stable for me but after a couple days system UI begins to crash.

I think I agree with you there.... Why move if you aren't going to improve

That's been the normal state of custom ROMs on the last few phones I've owned including the supposedly development friendly One Plus 5. I think the problem is that custom ROMs are rarely maintained by people who actually use the ROM and device as their daily driver. You can't make a good ROM for a phone you aren't even using so the ROMs always have bugs that the devs aren't aware of until users report them. There was only one One Plus 5 ROM that didn't have bugs and it was also the only custom ROM by a developer who actually used the phone everyday. One of the ROM devs for this phone even admitted that he wouldn't consider using his own ROM on his primary phone which pretty much says it all.

I have been using LineageOS Unofficial for a couple of months, and now the official for over a month. Everything just works. Things are smooth, and works real nice without any of the wonkiness I had with MIUI. I always struggled a bit to make MIUI work like I wanted. Then again, I greatly appreciate a stock-ish experience. I am even running Substratum.

Just curious...what are you looking for specifically that is special/unique that doesn't exist in actual Stock Roms provided monthly by Google? Can't get more stock than actual Stock.

Usually that would be a developer that's based solely on stock that would keep the graphics drivers updated with speed tweaks Etc. But it looks like those days are gone.

Back in the OG Droid, Droid Razr Maxx days I used to fully invest time and energy to run custom Roms as I also wanted to take advantage of overclocking CPU to maximize the performance of my device (which typically were underclocked by the OEMs). But, I haven't had to go that route in some time. I find the Stock experience provided by Google to be pretty good from a performance standpoint and the Pixel XL experience as far as monthly updates has also been exceptional. If you still have your heart set on having control of CPU clock speed settings and additional custom tweaks not available in the Stock experience - you should look at some of the custom kernels (or Roms) available. I believe there are custom kernels that will run with the true Stock Rom that will provide you greater flexibility.
Good luck.

Funny, I am currently running an custom Kernel on top of stock Android. You're absolutely right about Google's stock builds and performance. You gave great information because that's in fact what I am doing to date. Custom ROMs today are becoming too bloated with issues and issues. Again, thanks, and have a great day.

I have been thinking about at least experimenting with a custom kernel. Out of curiousity - which one are you running and what has been your experience? Why did you opt for the one you chose? (battery life, performance tweaks, customizations, etc...)?
Thanks

ElementalX Kernel.
Well, I picked this one mostly because he's an OG of the kernel scene. I personally don't do anything extra as far as extra features. But I just keep the script on his preferred settings, and I click install. I'm not into the overclocking, but I'm not too shy to underclock. I usually install custom kernels because of security updates and performance updates that they add due to Google's monthly developer updates.
You're welcome, no worries.
