I'm having this connection issues where the phone would show the 3g/4g icon but the connection is really slow( slowest speedtest gave me was 0.01mbps). Im testing with a different provider now but is it possible this is a hardware fault?
Same Problem
I have a similar problem, when I enable Mobile Data, it could not connect, I have to turn Airplane mode ON and then OFF and then Mobile date On to get the Mobile Data... Very Irritating... I hope its SW issue
I have slower connection on 3g and h then previous devices
Well its only 4g giving troubles now, is 4g and 3g on one chip or a seperate chip?
Try cleaning cache of your browser
Don't think its browser related because its systemwide. Plus i tries a factory reset already
I've gotten this as well from time to time. Doesn't seem related to whether or not I'm transitioning from Wi-Fi to 4g or not.

I'm getting the same and came on here specifically to see whether it was just me.
These are the symptoms: it seems to happen when I transition from a WiFi network to mobile data network. The data icon still shows activity and good signal but internet access is incredibly slow or non-existent in all apps. Toggling in and out of Aeroplane mode fixes it. I am on a 3G SIM, so for now I have tried to turn of 4G mode and see if this fixes it. Will report back.
This is really annoying - my £100 Acer Liquid Metal did this like 3 years ago... I don't expect a modern £500 phone to have this issue.
I love the phone but issues like this aren't acceptable and I'm getting really frustrated to the extent I might even send it back for refund under not fit for purpose.
Also I have problems with unstable network. Has anyone tried to restore the firmware?

I've turned off 4G as I don't have a 4G SIM, so I'm gonna see if this helps resolve the issue. If not, then I'm going to try and flash a different firmware as my handset came with a EUR firmware and there seems to be some differences between this and the UK firmwares. If that doesn't fix it, I'm going to try the AUS firmware which is a later version.
If I get an success or otherwise I'll post back.
I'm noticing that HTTPS traffic always seems to work fine, but standard non-encrypted traffic doesn't. Anyone else? Seems a bit weird.
Hi guys!
I m wondering if anybody does have wifi-tethering issue on M8 stock/unrooted.
It worked once at home and then nothing at all.
Is this because of outdated driver ? or should i use app from GooglePlay ?
Any advices??
P.s: usb tethering works however.

Unlikely, since you are on stock unrooted (assume this means never modded) Lollipop, your firmware should be up to date.

I can see wifi tethering on my network list but i can t connect to it. I get dns error.

4G switched on, or cell data not switched on?
If just 4G, I don't see why tethering would be blocked (should work fine on 3G).

I meant cell data (2G,3G,4G) not switched on.
I thought actually that wifi tethering can use my private wifi when at home.

For one thing, while I'm not sure, I don't think its technically possible for the phone to use its WiFi modem as a "sender" (router) and as a "receiver" at the same time.
Another thing, is if you already have your home WiFi network available, why not just tether the laptop directly instead of needlessly having the phone as a middle man? Using the phone as a WiFi hotspot basically defeats the purpose. Probably will even slow down the data connection to the laptop.

Actually the bandwidth speed on wifi tethering using mobile data is 2x times better than my home Wifi network. Obviously because of the 4G network.
it s 3mps vs 6-7mps when downloading..

You must have a really poor home internet connection and/or router, then.
My cable internet is around 80 Mbps, and my 14 year old WRT54 is spec'ed for 54 Mbps.

I was misleading a little bit
My internet connection is actually between 60-70 mbps on wireless router.
But i m using Internet Download Manager while downloading stuff from the internet and the transfer rate, it says, is about 2 mbps.
Has anyone else experienced slow download speed when using wifi tether? I can do a speed test on my phone and get 40mb/s then connect to the OP3 tether from my laptop and it will not even get 1mb/s. Max I got this morning was .69
I am as well. I just noticed this and haven't been able to figure it out just yet.
What carrier and OS are you on? I'm on T-Mobile and running the initial CM13 Unofficial build from 07/03.
I've been messing with my APN settings, but I don't think that's the issue. I wonder if it has to do with T-Mobile not recognizing the OP3 as an allowed device or something like that.
Were you able to figure it out?
OK, so I restored to the Stock OOS 3.2.1 backup I had made, and tethering is fast and working as it should. So maybe it's a CM13 thing. I'm going to download the latest official nightly and see if that fixes it or not. I'll report back once I do.

Anyone else on cm13 that can test?

Rather than try to discuss this in the Offical CM thread, I'll try to keep any related info in this one. Here's what I found out recently:
OK, so far I have tried the latest builds of CM13 Official, BlissROM, Dirty Unicorns, and RessurrectionRemix, and they all exhibit extremely slow WiFi tethering speeds between 0.01Mbps - 1.5Mbps, The only ROM that returns expected WiFi tethering performance is the Stock Oxygen 3.2.2 (between 20-50Mbps).
It would be really nice if anyone here could run some quick speedtests while tethering to Hotspot to let us know what you get and what carrier!
Click to collapse
And one user in the CM thread ran a test and had steller performance:
Notebook: Lenovo Thinkpad X220
Carrier: O2 Germany
32 Mbps over Wifi Tethering
Phone is on 3107 official CM
Click to collapse
So...without additional results from other users/carriers/ROMs, now I am thinking that maybe it is related to T-Mobile somehow. I wonder if maybe T-Mobile isn't recognizing 3rd party ROMs (and somehow is aware of Oxygen OS), and then throttles the tethering. I tried changing my device on their website to my previous HTC m9 with no change in tethering performance.
Anyone else care to test WiFi tethering speedtest for us (me)? Please also list your ROM and carrier.
TIA.

Thanks.
Just tried aicp and still had slow tethering. Only got about 1Mbps down. What speeds do you get?
T-Mobile does seem to be a common denominator though.
UPDATE: There are actually two AICP roms, and I had originally tried the 'KRYO" version, with slow tethering results. I just tried the "Unoffical" version and the speeds were better, at about 3.5Mbps. It's usable, but not great compared to OOS.
Interestingly, I only started using the [then] Unoffical CM13 rom on July 18, and my data usage shows about 1.5GBs of tethering usage. I didn't notice any issues with slowness until the end of last month, so I feel like it was working for a while in order for me to rack up so much usage.
My thoughts are that T-Mobile is throttling me, but I am on the 6GB plan (with full tethering allowance), and so far this month have only used ~2GBs of data.
I may try to call them later if I can and report back.
Any other T-Mobile users noticing wifi tethering slowness when using a custom rom?

It's not only the tethering which is working poorly it's also keeping up with the lte or 3g connection. It is changing too easily from lte to gsm only (edge)..As I said it's good with my other phone but not with this. I live in Finland and I have telia-sonera carrier. Elisa (carrier) is selling the phone here , it shouldn't matter(or maybe it should), but all the apn and others are configured fine.

Thanks for the update. Yours is the first in this thread that is not using T-Mobile and are experiencing the slow tethering issue.
I ended up calling T-Mobile and they were not able to resolve the issue. They escalated the issue to a higher level of technical support and said I should be hearing back from them in a few days. I'm not counting on anything, though.
I'm on Vodafone in NZ as well as on 2 Degrees in NZ and both have slow tethering speeds. My old LG G2 was much faster while tethering
Fixed it! (for T-Mobile at least)
It's an APN issue, at least for T-Mobile USA.
Just go into the SIM Card settings and edit the Access Point Names (i.e. APN) for the T-Mobile US LTE
Change the APN from fast.t-mobile.com to epc.tmobile.com (no hyphen). Use the menu option to Save the settings, then test the hotspot. For me, this worked instantly and without a reboot. Got 20Mbps down on my first Speedtest!
Yay!

I wanted to chime in and say Thank you for this. I changed my APN and am getting upwards of 26Mbps via hotspot. It does appear that I lost IPv6 but I'm not too worried about that right now.

This worked! you are a serious life saver dude!! woo hoo
This is what I found lately. When I received the OnePlus 3 last week, I tested the Hotspot functionality and it worked only with epc.t-mobile.com APN. However, after couple of days, the tethering became very slow on my other devices even though the speeds are of D/U 100 Mbps/20Mbps respectively.
Even though the tethering is slow, when I test for Speedtest.net on my laptop it still shows good speeds but no other website works. Then I filed a ticket with OnePlus thinking that hotspot tethering is not working. But then, I called up T-Mobile to check with them. They said I crossed the 5GB hotspot tethering limit and so they are automatically gets throttled. They said since they use speedtest.net for most of the testing purposes, that website is allowed automatically even through tethering and so it works.
In order test if it is the limit or a defect with the device, I requested T-Mobile to add little more bandwidth to my 5GB hotspot cap so that I can test it again before my billing cycle ends and they helped with the request. Voila, now the hotspot tethering works again super good. I have been testing on and off for the past few days and it is working pretty good since I did not cross the additional bandwidth yet. I am looking for a proper solution though so not to use the native hotspot which counts against the hotspot limit.
So, the native hotspot feature counts against the T-Mobile hotspot cap limit.
Hope this explanation helps.

No APN reset don't work. Get Disconnect from Mobile Data Service. But I see that the settings says when it is connected Network Type EDGE. But if it gets Disconnected then it says GSM
Edit: Attached ScreenShots
Go to developer options and turn on "cellular data always active". I use that on my phone and it picks up the cell signal almost instantly when out of WiFi range. I am still getting about 5 hrs SOT. ,
Okay i think this is gonna work, instand Switch to Mobile Data. And what to you mean with SOT @calbrs
Today i downloadet the system Update 3.2.2 and I think this bug is patched with this update . Actually no issues with the Mobile Data connection

I have exactly the same issue with my OP3 OOS 3.2.2, no root. It is really annoying
Me too, it isn't handling the switch between mobile data and Wi-Fi very well, not sure whether it's just one way, when i get to work and connect to work Wi-Fi I've ended up having to turn off mobile data to get it to use the Wi-Fi connection.

It is two way. That's my observation. I am very disappointed from the phone which has such problems with basic thing like wi-fi connection. I think this will be my first and last OP phone!
So has anyone found a solution to this issue? What kind of flagship killer has problems with such basic functionality?
I've read on other forums that some devices have a feature called Smart Network Switch, but I can't find that anywhere.
And I really don't think it's the APN...I've modified it in all possible ways and it's still happening...not switching automatically but starts working after switching to airplane mode and back. And the "aggressive" switch option doesn't work either.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix this or how it can be further investigated, please share, it's becoming really annoying. Thanks!

I activated the Mobile Data on in the Developer Options and for me it works pretty well.
The IPv4/IPv6 solution seemed to work. I still have issues when connecting to the wireless network (company wifi, with login credentials and the whole deal) but I used to have the same issue with my Nexus 5, meaning that I have to be disconnected from the mobile data to access the wifi network's login page (forgot to mention this in my previous post). Anyway, I'm happy that I don't have to switch to airplane mode anymore Thanks everyone!
Hey,
after updating to android pie I have problems with mobile data. In my area I usually have 4G or 3G but I now only have 2G a lot of times. I even compared the coverage with a friend who has the same provider as me but an iPhone, and she had 4G while I only had 2G. It also seems like I can't receive or send any WhatsApp messages unless I am connected to the WiFi.
Does anyone else have these kinds of problems, especially those living in Europe (I live in Germany)? Is there maybe a problem with LTE band 20? (my phone is not rooted, so I am unable to check)
I have the global version btw, and everything worked fine under oreo
