September Security Update (#11 - R16NW.N950USQS5CRI4) bricked my phone - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

Anyone else experience this after the most recent security update?
My phone rebooted after the update was installed, and the notification that the update was completing was visible in the notification bar. Then the screen timed out, since I wanted to let the phone just do its thing while finishing the update. The screen powered off, and it has been stuck that way for two days now. I've tried all manner of button presses to simulate a battery pull (Verizon officially recommends pressing and holding the volume down button and the power button to simulate a battery pull), but none of them work. I tried all combinations of the button presses with the sim tray pulled out, the charger attached, but nothing seems to work. I don't get any led indication either, just a black screen. I've tried charging it for a couple of hours, but don't get any red LED or other indication that it's charging at all. I think it's fully bricked, but wanted to know if anyone else had this happen and had any suggestions before I take it in for service.
thanks for reading

An update really shouldn't cause that.. How long have you held the buttons for? If you have a case protection on your phone take it off and then press the power button the Bixby button and the volume down button and make sure you have them all squeezed good and try to hold it for 2 minutes or more and if you still don't get anything then plug it in and then try again holding the buttons for at least 2 minutes.. If that doesn't work then you might need to have Samsung fix it for you under warranty if you still have warranty available..

You're right, it could be a coincidence, but one heck of a coincidence. If no one else is experiencing the issue, then it must be my phone. I tried holding the buttons for two minutes both charging and unplugged, no luck. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'm off to Verizon to see what my options are.

If the phone has been with you less than a year, Samsung will repair it for free since every phone has a 1 year warranty from the date of purchase.. Get a hold of Samsung and see if it's under warranty if it is they'll give you a shipping label and you just send it they'll fix it and send it back..

[Q] [ION] Please help with possible hard brick, I've read other threads

Hi, today while I was browsing on Firefox, the app closed by itself and the home screen got distorted (the wallpaper got black and some icons started to show up in the background). Since it has happened before, twice in the last week, I tried to reset the phone. However this time the phone did not turn on. I put it in the charger and the LED is also not turning on. I've had it plugged in for about 9 hours now and the LED is still off and the phone is not even getting warm, like it usually does when it's charging. The charger is also not warming up, and when I tried to connect the phone to the computer USB port, Windows doesn't report any power consumption.
I've read some threads about bricking, so I know people mention longer times to get the LED turn red, but is it normal that it doesn't warm up and doesn't suck any power from a USB port?
For anyone familiar with AT&T operations, if I sent it as warranty replacement, would they bother running diagnostics? I have it with LT28i .68 firmware, rooted and with CWM.
Also, is there a way to retrieve the data from the internal SD card? I tried connecting it to the computer and nothing happened. Nothing happens when I press either volume button + power button. An nothing happens when I connect it to the computer pressing either volume button.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Have you tried the Hard reset?
Holding Power Button and Volume button together for at-least 3-5 seconds and you would feel 3 vibration.

I tried that too, the phone also doesn't respond.
Does ION has removable battery? If yes try to remove it for a while.
If not. Then try the buttons combo with the phone connect to charger...

The Ion doesn't have a removable battery. I already tried all combinations of power+volume buttons, while disconnected and connected to the charger, and nothing. Maybe the battery somehow got disconnected internally, I don't know if that's even possible.
I've called AT&T, they'll send another warranty replacement, the second replacement I get. Hopefully this one will last enough at least for an early renewal.
I don't know if AT&T still does this but back when I was in the states last year I had them give me an early upgrade because two of the handsets they gave me were faulty (original and one replacement). Try talking to CS Reps sometimes it pays off. You might be able to get an early upgrade if you tell them how this can't keep happening you have important data blah blah blah.
Anyways good luck!

Broken Display?

ok so here is the rundown
Device: HTC one on vzw
Rom: Slimbean 2.x
Gapps: Slim AIO gapps
had a weird problem with the display today if anyone has had this or know someone who has i would greatly appreciate the help. I just flashed Slimbean 2.x last night and all was good. no problems what so ever, got everything setup and was working fine. this morning around 10am i opened snapchat to view a video. i clicked on the video and as soon as it started the screen went blank and would not turn on. i tried holding the power button down for at least a minute and nothing. also tried power and volume down, power and both volume buttons, power and volume up and still nothing seems to work. when i plug it into the wall charger the red LED light does not turn on and screen does not wake. when i plug it into the computer the computer does not ever read the device and noting pops up letting me browse the files on the phone. i have no clue why this happened it has been working fine for the 3 months that i've had it. took it to verizon about an hour ago and they didn't know either but they are sending me a replacement htc one. all i really want now are my photos that i have on the phone.
does anyone have any ideas about what i could do?
thanks
I had something similar and think it was conflict related. After installing the "advanced power menu" with xposed, I had an issue when trying to use it to boot into recovery. Basically it had timed out and then went away without rebooting. The next time I tried it locked up and my screen went black. My keys would light up if I clicked on the power button (it was dark in the room so the sensor was still working), but nothing else. Nothing I did would make the screen turn on at all and holding down the power key to reboot did not work. I just planned on letting the battery die out. After about 45 minutes, the phone just rebooted and everything was back to normal. I really think it locked up due to a conflict similar to what a PC might do.

[Q] Screen doesn't turn on!

Dears, help me please!
I have my nexus 7 for 3 months. It was working pretty fine before... BUT... last thursday I left it charging overnight, I woke up turned the tablet alarme off and put it on a backpack to travel.
When I tried to turn it on the screen just did nothing!! The strange thing is: when I got mail it notifies me... the pulse light is active but the screen doesn't show.
I tried to charge it, hold the power button, hold the power + volume down buttons and nothing solved.
Anyone has/had the same problem?
I have the same problem. It happened a couple times already but I could not figure out why it happens. When I push the power button long enough it just restarts. It happens only when its laying around a couple hours like over night.
The tablet returned from the repair.
It seems like they changed the mainboard. Sadly there was something behind the camera glas and there were scratches on the screen. So they had to send it in again. Then they also changed the screen. All this took about 3 weeks.
I suggest claim for repair its definitely a hardware issue. Now my Nexus is running flawless and I am waiting for the Lollipop update.
You could also just try holding volume down + power for about 30 seconds. I've had a couple of freezes before where holding down the power button did nothing. But, holding down power + volume down worked. This is assuming you weren't flashing or doing something else, this is only if you were using the tablet as normal and it just suddenly won't turn on.

Power button, volume button are working but I can’t power off the device cause I can’t see the screen options.
When I plug in to the charging cable it vibrates but does not show anything on screen.
It didn't drop or hit by anything. i have been using it for 3 months now. it just happened by itself or may be by some update that I don’t know.

I tried several times.. nothing happens... any other suggestion please
Power+voldown+home.
If this does not boot, you could try with usb dongle.
Or full run down to empty battery.
Next chance would require to open it.

It's not bricked so calm down. It just had a cyber stroke. It will be fine just let the power run out and recharge the battery so u can turn it on again. Same thing happened within days for getting mine.
yes... I am waiting for the battery to be completely dead. so far its on...taking calls and sms..I don't howmuch % of batter is left cause I can't see it.
I had the exact same problem once....and i had a hunch that the screen was fine, it turned out it was thankfully....but....im aware that on 100 percent battery in standby it can last a good week or so....i was too impatient...so i ran my fingers around the edge of the backing and slowly was able to pull out the back of tge case and unclip the battery...worked straight away when turned on.
But also what i discovered does reset the tablet forcefully is holding power, vol down and the center button at the same time....try it a few times for a minute each time...if successful you might get a message about being in download mode but then just do the same thing again but imidiatly release your fingers once you see the screen go off from download mode or it will just go bavk into it...good luck m8
Have you tried holding down the power button for awhile, like 30 seconds? This should shut your device off....Then take it from there.

Seriously on my tab right now i just held vol down, power and center button whilst on and after 25 seconds screen went black then gave the "are you sure you want to enter download mode." Then i tapped vol up......t805 as well.
Battery completely empty.. tab S turned off, i plugged in the charging cable (1 ) battery meter does not appear (2) Power+vol does not work for me.. if it does.. i can't see because of the dead screen...
i have 2 options now..
(1) send it back in warranty.. this will take a lot of time and they will only fix not replace.. i guess
(2) open it and fix the display.

Hello,
Did you finally got some result?
I have exactly the same problem with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. The screen suddenly went black although the light leds (home, back) were on.
I tried different combinations of buttons, usb charging and nothing. The only difference is that now the light leds are off.
---------- Post added at 08:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 PM ----------
I have achieved to boot up the device because I have heard the start up sound and some notifications. However, the display doesn't work at all: the screen is black and there is no response when touching it. In addition, the light leds of the buttons are off now even when I push the home button.
Volume keys are working (I hear the sound then touching them).
Hard reset is VOLUME DOWN(left side on a 10.5) + POWER. Hold until it restarts.

But I can't figure how could this happen in a new (2 month) high-end product... I think that I will have to use the product warranty with the cost in time it involves.
This has happened to me twice during the last year. The last time was just ten minutes ago. I tried everything mentioned in this thread. VolUp+Home+Pwr for a looong time. Just PWR for a long time. I saw on my Wifi Router that the tablet was connected, but no screen. What helped me was to do a combination of everything mentioned here. What eventually got the screen on was 1. I turned of my router and 2. Home+VolDOWN+PWR for (what I believe was) 10-15 seconds. Then I got the choice to do a normal restart or a device reset. If you come this far, be sure to press VOL DN when asked. Otherwise your data will be lost. Obviously, I can't say if the router pwr off was necessary or not.
What's really weird is that my LG G3 went into a boot loop at about the same time (less than five minutes apart). They are not connected other than using the same router. I've had my LG G3 for exactly one year without ever experiencing a boot loop. The LG G3 is rooted, but my SM-T805 is not.

It's easy fix, most of the time due to loose LCD cable. If you can hear anything on the background but blank screen, 99% is loose cable.
Remove the back cover, disconnect and reconnect LCD cable, make sure it's fully inserted, then secure the connector with tapes. Test by plugin to charger, press the HOME button.
If you do correctly, the battery icon should show up on the screen. Then put back the cover, you're done.

January 2017 patch bricked my Pixel XL 128GB?!

Hello everybody,
2 days ago, my Google Pixel XL received the January patch and downloaded it. It installed the first step flawlessly, but the second phase took a lot of time (the progress bar was staying around 50% for at least 60 minutes). Since I was not watching my phone during the rest of the process, I cannot say precisely what happened, but as I wanted to look how far the progress bar is, the phone did not respond anymore.
here is a summary of the situation:
- it is the pixel XL with 128GB of memory directly bought on the Google store
- the battery was fully charged before the update began, an it was approximately around 85% as I looked at the progress bar for the last time
- the phone was not hot during or after the update
- the screen is now black and does not display anything (I have tried everything I thought about: it is definitely black and nothing happens anymore, even when plugged for charging, or when connected to a PC (the USB communication with the PC is not building up anymore))
- the phone react only when the power button is maintained pressed for several seconds: it vibrates briefly, but nothing more happens
- the phone was never rooted, there was no "unknown sources" app installed (I had Cerberus installed but have uninstalled it 2 days before the Android patch was installed), and the USB debugging is not activated
- I called the Google support and they immediately proposed to ship a replacement device (they did not ask me to do some tries)
I have tried to discharge the battery by maintaining the power-on button pressed during hours: the red led then turns on when the charger is plugged in, but the screen stays black.
If somebody has an idea of a test I could make, I would appreciate the held.
Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions.
Best regards
Vincent

How long have you had it plugged in? It sounds like the battery is empty.
Try to leave it on the charger for a couple of hours.
If it does not boot by pressing the power button, you can try to boot bootloader by pressing volume down and power at the same time.
The battery has been fully charged, so I am pretty sure that it is not the battery (the phone has been plugged in for more than 12 hours to recharge it).
I have also tried every button combination that I know and that I found on the web: there is nothing else than a short vibration when the power button is pressed, but no reboot and nothing is displayed.

I would try pressing and holding the power and volume down buttons until you get the short vibration. Hopefully after vibration you will be in bootloader. Then connect to a PC and try and flash-all the factory image.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, after the vibrations, I do not get anything on the screen. In my previous phones, I was used to flash ROMs and so on. I never bricked a phone. But with the Google Pixel XL, I must admit that I do not have anymore ideas how to rescue it. I have tried the following:
- holding only the power button for several seconds --> short vibrations after several seconds, but nothing else
- holding the power button and the volume down button for several seconds --> short vibrations after several seconds, but nothing else
- holding the power button and the volume up button for several seconds --> short vibrations after several seconds, but nothing else
- holding the power button and the volume down + up buttons for several seconds --> short vibrations after several seconds, but nothing else
I have made these tries with the charger plugged in, plugged out, and removed at different instants. Nothing more than just the short vibrations.

Your screen may be black, but there is a small chance your still in the bootloader. I have read that other people have recovered from a black screen. I still think its worth a try to connect to a PC and see if the factory image flashes after holding power and volume down and after vibration. Those vibrations have meaning.
Thank you, I gave it a try: the PC does not even ask to install a driver, when the phone is connected. I made several tests, exactly as it is required to flash it, but there is no communication with the PC. :crying:

I thought there might be a small chance. At least you will get a new phone. Best of luck.
I hate to tell you this but I had the same issue with a 32 GB 5 inch pixel...It was dead...Everything you have said is what happened with mine.
What happened was the slot the phone was trying to boot into had no bootloader or it was a bad flash...Either way, the slot didn't have a bootloader on it when it tried to boot and that black screen is the result...Google sent me a new one and all was well and they will do the same for you.
This is why I don't trust OTA updates...I manually flash everything and I'm sure to flash the bootloader to both slots anytime I update my phone...Good way to keep this from happening again....Best of luck man
You keep saying several seconds. You gotta hold the power and volume down for a pretty long while. Just saying.
Probably a bad boot partition though..
Thank you very much for your kind support, guys.
Your explanations is very interesting. This means that the strategy implemented for the bootloader itself is not very safe. I would be interested in knowing how such a faulty flash can happen and what are the possible reasons behind. Is there a procedure that can increase the chances for a successful flash by doing some things before the OTA update is allowed to be installed?

Believe me, I pressed the button for a very long while also (hours) by blocking the button in such a was that the phone boots up until the battery is discharged. So also such an extreme tray was made. The only consequence was the red light flashing.
Iam having similar(exactly) situation as stated by OP. Phone dead, only short vibration, no boot loader, no dshub qualcomm either detected while plugging USB to pc. Charging still ok.
update: now phone can be detected as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 in Device Manager.

Phone is in Qualcomm Emergency Download mode. What happened? Also a bad OTA flash?
You only have two options:
Press power button for ~ 30 seconds to get out of EDL. If it's completly bricked then RMA. You're under warranty yeah?!
