help did I brick my phone?

All,
I have a big problem. When I try to start my phone I get the black screen with google and the unlocked padloack, after which the screen goes dark and nothing happens anymore.
What I did before this are two things. I had been mukking around with the screen resolution (I had it set at 240 and 280, as some apps did not show up in the market) also downloaded LCD density to solve the market issue.
I then rebooted the device and entered CWM to do a backup which as far as I knew succeeded. unfortunately after rebooting, see the above.
I have tried a couple of reboots, tried restoring the nandroid (the above was the only one I had). that didn't work, so tried to connect to the PC to load a new ICS rom (original 4.0.4 by google), unfortunately my device can not go into USB mode in CMW (it comes up with UMS lunfile missing....)
so I am woring in circles. can't start the device to download a rom, can't open USM to load a ROM to start the device again.....
any help would be appriciated

as mentioned, I can't get a rom on the phone so that I can flash it.
I can't start the phone to donwload one, and can't connect it to usb to get one on the storage....
sorry, you mentioned fastboot.... not USB.
so connect it to usb cable. I then entered fastboot devices, no number came up, as was also the case with ADB. thinkin I might not have the correct USB drivers for my windows machine. any idea where to get teh correct one?

To flash stock images the files are on your PC, not the phone.
If you can get the phone to boot into fastboot (via vol up + vol dn + power) and get your PC to recognize it you're good to go.

thats the issue. pc cannot recognize the phone, so cannot get any files from the PC to the phone (ie. cannot get a rom file to the phone...)

Either directly from Samsung or download the GNex Toolkit (You might want to use it anyways to flash the stock image), the drivers come with it.
After you installed the drivers and have you phone plugged in, go to the device manager to check if it is connected properly.

For the drivers, I would recommend you remove all old drivers and install these. If you don't know how to install them, or are having issues, look here.

I had a similar issue with regard to my PC recognizing the drivers. I googled around and found that people were having success with installing the PdaNet drivers, so maybe you can try that too. I had installed the Android SDK as well as the PdaNet drivers, and I eventually got mine to work.
I would probably follow Efrant's links first though - if that doesn't work for you, then maybe you can try PdaNet drivers and/or installing the SDK.

Why not just do a factory reset from within recovery?

the factory reset didn't help, the phone just wouldn't go past the black lockscreen. So in the end I used the galaxy nexus toolkit. installed the drivers for the PC, was able to go through fastboot and push files and flash a new rom.
Al is now solved, just need to do a lot of work to bring the phone back to where it was and make a backup asap.

adb doesnt recognise my phone anymore

I have an HTC One M8, bought from UAE. I rooted it and it all went well. Now I want to get OTA updates on the phone and I want to unroot for the moment. The problem is that I connect my phone to my laptop run adb but it doesnt do anything. All it says is list of devices attached and thats it. Nothing else at all. I cant give my phone commands or anything of the sort. I want to update my phone to the latest android version with sense 7 and I would prefer that I have a stock rom hence the OTA but without getting my phone recognised with ADB I dont know how to do it. Please help!
P.s. I am running windows 7 and my CID is HTC__J15
I got the CID from an app from the app store, dont know if its legit but I the gulf region uses this CID so I guess its safe to assume its correct.
P.s.s. Yes I have tried reinstalling HTC drivers and it hasnt done anything. The device manager doesnt have any unknown device listed either. Yes USB Debugging is also on and I get the notification on the phone as well but my computer doesnt recognise it.
P.s.s.s. Is there anyway to get the latest OTA without hooking my phone up to the computer? I'm not a tech guy so I need help. A step by step would be very nice. Thanks

Boot into bootloader and perform the "fastboot getvar all" command. Post the output here without IMEI and serial no. as the software number is needed to provide further instructions and identify the correct RUU and/or backup you'd need.

Meaning the device doesn't show up at all in Device Manager (HTC, Android phone, etc.)?
If you boot the phone into bootloader-fastboot mode, any response to fastboot commands (fastboot devices, etc.). Sometimes fastboot works, when adb doesn't. And fastboot is the really critical one you want.

I tried booting into fastboot mode and then hooking it up with the computer. I enter the fastboot getvar all command and all I get is < waiting for device > it just stops there for as long as I wait and it doesnt do anything. Please help!!! I've tried different cables as well. Also a different laptop. I'm not sure whats wrong. The sync manager doesnt work either. Doesnt detect my phone :crying:

Media Transfer Protocol works. I just get a new drive with my phones internal and external storage. I can transfer files but thats the only response my computer gives to the phone. Help please :crying:

Did you activate the developer options and if so USB debugging as well. Did you try installing Sync Manager to install the needed HTC drivers, uninstall it (as it interferes with adb/fastboot sometimes) to just keep the drivers? Which adb/fastboot are you using?

Try this: Go into Windows Device Manager, find the device, pick the option to manually select the drivers. Then pick the generic Android MTP device drivers (or some such name like that). I often have to do this to get my home computer to pickup my phone via adb/fastboot, while MTP works just fine.

I have both developer options and USB debugging on. I also tried drivers that came with the phone via the sync manager. Tried after getting rid of the sync manager but it still doesnt work. I can get my software number from setting>about etc no? My CID and Software number is all I need to unroot the phone and install the stock recovery, if I'm not mistaken? I am completely dumb at this tech thing. I'm a civil engineer. I understand concrete and rebar

I'd suggest downloading the drivers again and first of all try with another USB data cable. If it doesn't show up at all, it sounds as if you got a connection problem. So could also be caused by a defective cable and/or USB port on your phone.
I'd check the following:
1) try connection to another USB port
2) try with another data cable
3) download latest HTC drivers from HTC.

I had this happen to me and to resolve it I went into the C: drive of my computer and in the program files folder I located the HTC folder. Once there I looked for the apk files that allow you phone to connect to HTC sync. If I remember correctly, I copied apk file #2 to my phone and installed it. Once it was install that issue went away. To be on the safe side, copy and install each apk file one at a time(there should be 5 of them) to your phone. Only one of them will install the others will not. This will help you to locate and install the correct apk file. Once you have found and installed the correct one, you can removed the other apk files that wouldn't install and reboot your phone. After that connect your phone to your computer, and htc sync and adb should recognize your device. There is a thread on this but I can not remember where to locate it.

Motorola G4 Plus MTP device not showing in Windows 10

I have unlocked the phone and installed Twrp.
I have wiped everything on the phone.
i am able to boot into Twrp, but when i plug in the USB it does not show as MTP device.
I need to copy the ROm to the phone in order to Flash it, how can i fix this.

Make sure to install Motorola Device Manager on Windows.
Or use Linux, where everything actually works.

Installed still, device doesn't show up!

Can you try some other port and/or cable ? Or does the device show up in device manager or in the notifications as setting up?

Well i have another Htc phone as well , when i plug it in in recovery it shows in windows as MTP but with Motorola it doesn't show up.
But after installing the system it shows up in windows normally..

@rony925 Your Computer Is Missing MTP Driver Install It Manually
Go To C Drive/Windows Folder Search for WDMTP.inf Right Click on It and Hit Install (Your Phone Needs To Be Connected to Computer During Installation with MTP Mofe )

Try this

Install it manualy in device manager and choose the MTP USB type.

Oneplus 3 does not connect to pc

my oneplus 3 does not connect to my pc. I have tried turning on and off developer options, turn off and on oem unlocking and usb debugging. I change the usb connection to mtp from charging but does not change. Also does not recognize it when i connect to pc. Also does not pop up on status bar and i checked portable devices. I also tried installing the oneplus drivers. i am on Android 7.0 freedomos-2.5. Any way to fix this issue? i might try to update freedomos because im on a old version of it.:crying:

Windows? If, yes windows drivers are the problem.

I have tried it on both my PC and laptop with both windows 10. Does not work. My PC also has windows 7 still seems to not work. Are there any other drivers i might be missing?

i have also done some research that you should update your drivers from device manager. I dont see anything related to my device. i went to portable devices nothing and i dont have a other devices section in device manager. Any help?

What recovery?
Try to flash latest twrp. I use blu-spark by eng-stk. You can fla**** thru recovery or Flashify app.

ive also found out theres no kedcom driver when i go to fastboot. i even reinstalled adb drivers to insure its there but it does not pop up.

You'll need to remove drivers reboot, install correct drivers, reboot and then be nice to everyone you ever meet and it'll show up. It's a real pain but you can get there. XDA tutorial all the way there!

I once have kind of youre problem connecting to my laptop (win.10). But, at work, on that laptop, connection was ok (win.7).
I reinstal windows 10 and connection works fine, since.
I allways use latest TWRP & version of rom. I can't tell for sure what it's goin on with youre phone.
If i was in youre situation i format my phone (this will erase ALL in youre phone). And if PC still does not see the phone reinstall windows.

Also: Try a different cable.
A cheap cable could have a charging pin layout but lack data pins connections.
9 out of 10 issues with connecting to PC and getting odd behaviours is due to a bad/wrong cable.

What are the driver links if you have? I already installed the OnePlus drivers.

I used the OnePlus cable and another cable.

Driver issues win 10
Find the excellent tutorial here on drivers.
For some reason my phone didn't show up but was able to receive commands. It was frustrating because I wanted to use the all in one XDA product but couldn't.
Even if you installed drivers they can be broken!
Do drivers from scratch per xda tutorial. Don't forget reboot!
Try different cables and usb ports! My front ones never seem to work!
Don't just try fastboot commands also try adb. Like I said mine wasn't seen properly yet it took the commands.
Unless your windows is a years old install it shouldn't require reinstall.
Factory phone reset might help.

No ADB. No TWRP. No Magisk. Am I screwed?

Basically, I installed Havoc OS, tried flashing a couple kernels, kept getting systemui crashes, so I decided to dirty flash HavocOS again, and forgot to flash TWRP again before I exited TWRP.
Next, I boot back into my phone, opened Magisk Manager to find that Magisk is not installed, just the manager. I can't install Magisk as I have no TWRP...Which leads me to my next point, trying to boot into recovery brings me no avail as I forgot to flash TWRP. I have zero recovery right now.
Thirdly, HavocOS Suffers from the whole issue of needing SELinux set to permissive, for ADB to work...I can't do that, because I don't have Magisk/root.
Please tell me that someone has an idea here? I'd like to get TWRP back, or back to 100% stock and I can start over, or something other than a custom rom with serious SystemUI crashes and no root...

This is not even close to a softbrick. Just boot TWRP using Fastboot and flash the zip from inside TWRP to install it. Also, there are various other solutions to fix your problem. Another one would be to simply use Deuces Recovery Script and go back to Stock.

As d-m-x stated boot twrp with fastboot boot not fastboot flash. Twrp will load into the phone then you can flash twrp and magisk.

I'd tried Fastboot already, will try again momentarily though.

Fastboot hasn't worked either. Unless I'm doing something wrong, but I just get "waiting for any device" despite having adb on/off, being in bootloader/fastboot mode or being booted into android, etc.

For Fastboot to work you have to be in the Bootloader Menu. How did you unlock and root your Phone in the first place? That should have taken you through those steps.
Anyways, it's likely that the computer just doesn't recognize the phone. Connect it and go into your Device Manager and see if it's properly recognized. If not install the correct USB Drivers and try again. If everything is set up correctly you can type "fastboot devices" while in the bootloader and you should see your Devices address which means it is connected and ready. Then boot TWRP as stated and install the zip from within.

You're correct, I think its simply a case of the PC not recognizing the device. I've already checked device manager, and it's not properly installing the device. I've multiple times tried reinstalling the universal driver, and various other fixes. I think it relates to the whole issue of HavocOS being screwy about USB. Many people have reported issues with USB recognition issues when ADB is turned on. The consensus from how I understand it, is that ADB ON = Phone won't be recognized. ADB OFF = Device should be recognized for file/data transfer...However even with ADB off my PC is still not installing drivers properly / recognizing the device.
The Device Manager lists my device as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)"
Also tried:
1. Go to C:\Windows\INF
2. Find the file "wpdmtp.inf"
3. Right click the file and click 'Install'
4. Once that is done, simply plug your phone and it should work.

Try these troubleshooting steps:
- make sure you're running the LATEST SDK Tools
- Try diff USB cables (switch from 2.0 to 3.0, or vice versa)
- Try a diff USB port
- Make sure you're in the proper fastboot folder with the fastboot application
- Boot into bootloader type fastboot devices see if you get a serial number
In my sig is a link for troubleshooting, and step by step that includes links to get latest SDK Tools.
If all else fails, I'd reco a fresh factory image install and get back to your cust Rom from there, rather than spend a day or two chasing ghosts.

Spoke with Google; getting the phone RMA. Blatantly told the guy it was rooted previously, bootloader unlocked, and running a custom ROM. He said it didn't matter. I will report back on this thread once I have new phone in hand, just to confirm all went well.

Reporting back.
Brought phone to virgin mobile, obviously still heavily modified.
Was given a loaner phone. Signed a paper saying I'd pay 150 for the loaner if it broke. Broke loaner screen same day.
Just picked up a brand new pixel 2 xl they shipped (phone only) because mine was considered unrepairable. I was charged 169 for the loaner phone, to my account with virgin. No cash transaction.
All in all, they honoured googles view of not minding the modifications so long as it's an issue they don't feel is related.
