I am rooted with SuperSU and about stuck on 7.1.1 November security level. I really badly do not want to lose any data I have on my phone, no time to set up things again (and again, once was enough when I shattered the previous one). I have bought Titanium Backup long ago.
All in all, how do I get from here to a fresh, rooted ROM? TKPCA channel, if that matters. All the guides I can find are vague and outdated and really, really have no time to play tamagotchi with my phone.

If one of us happens to get the update, and want to keep root....what do you want us to do with the update?
Don't install it. I'm not sure how to do that with an Android device.
However if it does get installed you will lose root. It could also cause some problems if it gets pushed to your phone.
The devs will have a rooted version of the rom before they will have a root method for the rom.
I think it is safe to say, if you want to keep Root, ignore the update prompt, and wait for the developers here to make rooted versions of the ROM.
The original firmware was rooted before the phone came out. (I don't know how long it took developers to actually Root the phone, since I don't know how long they had the developers release in their hands).
When the 1.47 OTA came out, it broke root, and became a mad scramble to try to re-root the phone. If I remember right, it took a couple weeks to find the workaround that would allow root.
It is a good bet that the new release WILL break root again, and there is no telling how long it will be before it can be rooted again, if ever.
is this a serious question? most updates will remove all hacked/homebrew stuff been hapning since the begining of time.......(i.e. PSP, Nintendo Wii, iPhone/touch......)just dont update...take this stuff to yahoo answers.

Update lose root. Period. Just wait.
ohh geez, be prepared for all of the topics like "just updated to sprints official froyo update and lost root can i root it back?" my gawd its gonna get annoying
i guess this is a noob question, but how long does it take to get a rooted stock rome of this 2.2? i would assume not too long correct?
usually same day.. its all about patience which there is little of.. i can guarantee you will have a stock rooted rom by this weeks end
Pretty new to Android phones. Just got my evo 4g last week and I've been having a lot of fun with it. I went on vacation this week and I wanted to have the wireless tether working so I used unrevoked3 to root it for the use of the tethering app. Now that I'm back however, I want to do more with the phone.
But now that I'm reading around I'm wondering if I should just yet.... I guess the official froyo update is coming on Tuesday (Aug 3rd) and I would certainly like to use it (or a rooted froyo rom).
My first question is, is it necessary for me to factory reset the phone (since I used unrevoked3) to install the official OTA when it becomes available? My second question would be... should I? I see many custom ROMs for 2.2 already out there... I've been looking at CyanogenMod6 specifically and I'm sure that now that I have more time to find the solutions to the problems I was having with SimpleRoot I could get that installed in no time.
My next question is, should I factory reset the phone before I run SimpleRoot or will it not conflict with what unrevoked3 has already done?
And lastly... if I have to factory reset, what kind of setup is required to get the phone back on the sprint network (if any)? Will I have to redo the initial setup call I made to sprint or will that information still be saved on the phone?
To sum up my questions...
1. If I were to want the official 2.2 Froyo update, would a factory reset be necessary since I rooted the phone with unrevoked3?
2. Should I wait for the official 2.2 update? (I've basically already convinced myself not to wait just by writing this post... I've already got the itch to experiment)
3. Should I factory reset the phone before I attempt to SimpleRoot? (Seeing as how I already used unrevoked3 method)
4. If I do factory reset... what kind of setup is required to get my cell back to its ability to receive calls? (if any)
I would do a reset and use simple root to get fully unlocked. Then flash a rooted Froyo rom like Ava's Froyo. All you'll have to do is login to your Google account and redownload your apps. No additional setup is needed to make calls, texts, etc. Before you reset, try out titanium or my backup. I'm not sure if they require full root or not but if they dont, you can backup all the apps you currently have installed and restore them to the new Rom. Hope this helps.
Sent from my EVO using xda App
It helps very much, thank you for your fast reply =D I tried out titanium backup but it requires busybox which is telling me it requires nand unlocked... I'm not to worried about it. Like you said I have all my contacts saved via google and the apps can all be re-installed once I have a custom rom I'm comfortable with.
Thanks again =D
try my backup pro it works well for me and it worked for me before being rooted and once rooted it will gain more features.
So after having softbricked my phone while attempting to get TWRP onto my phone (my phone's fine now don't worry) I've had to accept that, well, it's been years since I tried to do any of this stuff and I haven't once done it on a Samsung phone (my last phone before this one, years ago, was a Nexus, and as far as I understand it those are easier to root and stuff than Samsungs are). I've been searching for updated information regarding how to get one of these to work. And well, I have no idea. Please help, thanks.
Greetings,
I've recently got myself upgraded with xz2c. I used to have a rooted z3c back in the days of glory, however now I seem to have less and less time to learn about the current ways to root. I've recently updated my device to pie 52.0.A.3.84 due to the fact I couldn't figure out how to stop the update notification from showing. Phone feels sluggish and overall less functional with the updated version. I am considering to downgrading back to 51.1.A.11.51. Forgive the novice question but AFAIK you loose all your data if you downgrade unless you use something like titanium backup which requires root. Is there a way to do this without root privileges while conserving the user data?
You can try through Flashtool, it can download the firmware with the built in xperifirm app, but you can loose your data of it's something not compatible
I also need this but when i tried, Flashtool didnt recognise my ftf file and oreo firmware is not exist anymore in xperifirm. How can we do rollback process?
Alright so... Apparently I rooted my phone at some point and over the years my phone has gotten really slow. After Googling a bit I found my phone is still on 7.0 when it should be on 8.0 and that confused me a bit until I realized I rooted my phone at some point when I dug up some Android files on my computer. I found this website and discovered I had an account here, so I looked up my posts and found I had used a guide to root my phone located here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/howto-moto-z-play-unlock-root-t3508547
After reading around for quite some time I learned that apparently I had to unlock the bootloader to root this phone when on most devices you don't have to apparently, making rooting this device not as simple as just installing an app and pressing a few buttons like on some phones. The guide talks a lot about fastboot and flashing and I have no idea how to follow these steps as it feels like there are steps between steps that are missing since everyone else here already seems to know what to do without including how to do certain steps.
After hours of reading through threads I decided that I wanted to just flash my phone back to a fresh unrooted version of Android and then install the updates OTA. I just spent hours backing up all my apps with Helium until I realized it couldn't backup some apps, so I then Googled and discovered Titanium Backup and backed up everything again through it. Well... why the apps were backing up I stumbled upon a thread here that said I would brick my phone if I flashed back to the original version of Android on this phone then tried to update to the newest version OTA.
Well now I'm a bit paranoid and am hoping someone here can walk me through how to upgrade my rooted Moto Z Play running Android 7.0 to Android 8.0 without bricking it, or throw a guide my way that explains how to do this for simpletons like me.
TL: DR - I suffer from amnesia and don't remember how I ended up rooting my phone, and need to find someone that can explain to someone who is not knowledgeable like me how to upgrade my rooted Moto Z Play to Android 8.0 since my phone is running like hot garbage after all these years.
Thank you in advance to anyone who spent any time reading this wall of text
After messing around for over 12 hours I surprisingly got my phone in a working rooted state on Android Oreo 8.0 without bricking it... But there's one snag. Each time I boot my phone, I first get the "Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted" (Bootloader unlocked warning) and then it takes me straight into TWRP. Even if I hit Reboot and select "System" it just loops back into TWRP. The only way I can get into my phone it seems is to boot into the bootloader then select start. Not really a big deal, but it's still annoying.
I'm hoping this is something that requires an easy fix and that someone is willing to guide me through it.
