A few questions regarding Froyo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Pretty new to Android phones. Just got my evo 4g last week and I've been having a lot of fun with it. I went on vacation this week and I wanted to have the wireless tether working so I used unrevoked3 to root it for the use of the tethering app. Now that I'm back however, I want to do more with the phone.
But now that I'm reading around I'm wondering if I should just yet.... I guess the official froyo update is coming on Tuesday (Aug 3rd) and I would certainly like to use it (or a rooted froyo rom).
My first question is, is it necessary for me to factory reset the phone (since I used unrevoked3) to install the official OTA when it becomes available? My second question would be... should I? I see many custom ROMs for 2.2 already out there... I've been looking at CyanogenMod6 specifically and I'm sure that now that I have more time to find the solutions to the problems I was having with SimpleRoot I could get that installed in no time.
My next question is, should I factory reset the phone before I run SimpleRoot or will it not conflict with what unrevoked3 has already done?
And lastly... if I have to factory reset, what kind of setup is required to get the phone back on the sprint network (if any)? Will I have to redo the initial setup call I made to sprint or will that information still be saved on the phone?
To sum up my questions...
1. If I were to want the official 2.2 Froyo update, would a factory reset be necessary since I rooted the phone with unrevoked3?
2. Should I wait for the official 2.2 update? (I've basically already convinced myself not to wait just by writing this post... I've already got the itch to experiment)
3. Should I factory reset the phone before I attempt to SimpleRoot? (Seeing as how I already used unrevoked3 method)
4. If I do factory reset... what kind of setup is required to get my cell back to its ability to receive calls? (if any)

I would do a reset and use simple root to get fully unlocked. Then flash a rooted Froyo rom like Ava's Froyo. All you'll have to do is login to your Google account and redownload your apps. No additional setup is needed to make calls, texts, etc. Before you reset, try out titanium or my backup. I'm not sure if they require full root or not but if they dont, you can backup all the apps you currently have installed and restore them to the new Rom. Hope this helps.

It helps very much, thank you for your fast reply =D I tried out titanium backup but it requires busybox which is telling me it requires nand unlocked... I'm not to worried about it. Like you said I have all my contacts saved via google and the apps can all be re-installed once I have a custom rom I'm comfortable with.
Thanks again =D

try my backup pro it works well for me and it worked for me before being rooted and once rooted it will gain more features.

Some questions about rooting (phone is already rooted)

I just want to say that I have successfully rooted the phone and I am running root required apps just fine. But I have some further questions about where to go from here.
#1: Flashing ROMs using ClockworkMod--do I have to wipe my phone every time I want to change a ROM or can I just install a new ROM on top of the old one?
#2: I keep getting a message about needing to update the Firmware... I heard there was some kind of update which kills root so I have been avoiding the Firmware update. Is this the update that kills root? How do I get this OTA update message to stop showing up & is there an updated rooted firmware I can install to not lose root and still have an up to date phone?
#3: What are the benefits of doing all the junk listed in the rooting tutorial after rooting the phone like unlocking the nand? Why would I ever want to make a nand backup?

1. You have to wipe every time you flash a rom of different build...example: you have Fresh Rom and you want to go to Damage Control, then yes you would have to wipe. If you are just updating Fresh .3 to Fresh .5 then you would not have to wipe.
2. There are updated roms out using the latest software patch. I know Damage Control's latest utilizes this...not sure of the others, as I have only run his since the last update.
3. Making a "nand backup" is nothing more than backing up the current rom you are using in case you screw something up you can just revert to your backup. Unlocking nand also allows you to "write" within Android vs. having to do it using adb commands.
hope this helps...I'm sure others will chime in.
pretty much what admorris said.
#2 make sure never ever to take an ota update!!! you could lose your root forever Wait for a dev to incorporate the update (you should find an updated rom and the update messages will stop)
#3 You want to unlock nand because that is full root. The first part of rooting is only the half of it Most custom roms now require nand be unlocked in order for the rom to properly function
thanks. Is there any app I can download to make a backup of my settings & apps? I'm tired of wiping my phone and starting over from scratch.

Want to upgrade to 2.2, but not sure how to proceed

Greetings all,
My Evo is still at 1.47 after foolishly taking the OTA update, and I haven't yet re-rooted it after the exploit was discovered. I want to upgrade to 2.2, but I am hesitant to do so after all the warnings from last time about taking OTA updates.
I really am not interested in a custom ROMs all that much, as I prefer stability and I want my 4G to work correctly.
With that said, I do want to keep my future options open. So, with that in mind, how should I first proceed?
I don't care about losing my apps and data, etc. I will reload.
- Should I follow the tutorials to first fully unlock the NAND?
- If so, can I then apply the official 2.2 update over the air?
- If I do that, and I have unlocked the NAND, can I revert to rock stock later?
- Is there a way (kitchen?) to keep the stock ROM and just remove some apps?
Thanks for the guidance, just want to proceed cautiously.

DO NOT UPGRADE/UPDATE, do a full root then flash any of the Froyo/2.2 ROM's already rooted
most of the release roms have 4g working as well as are very stable. I bet if you tried any of the custom roms you would be suprised. I have very few issues with the custom roms i have used (mainly fresh and dc). As i need my phone everyday for work and am a very heavy user because of it i can tell you hat you will probably be fine with any of the big custom roms (cm6 excluded if you need 4g)
Now on to the question if you root and then take the OTA you are basically jsut wasting time as it will unroot your phone. Your best bet is to root the phone and then if you dont want a custom rom find the stock rooted 2.2 rom in the dev section and flash that. it is the stock room except it doesnt override your root. nothing else is done to it.
This would allow you to have froyo on as close to the ota as possible while not killing your ability to root or taking away your root.
This. I'm lost along with all of the other users who applied the OTA to 2.2 (I have the leaked version). Once I get root again I will never unroot, ever. Flash this ROM (Post ID: 740520, can't post links yet), it's the rooted OTA ROM for 2.2. Keep your NAND, keep your root... having official software means you're stuck with terrible "official" support from HTC and Sprint.
Best of luck.

Backup and restore rom

I was wondering is it possible for me to backup current rom and restore it if I needed
If yes please give me steps
Also how possible for mento restore manufacture setting and everything like I just purchased
Are you rooted? If so, just use ROM Manager (which uses either ClockworkMod or Amon RA depending on which you choose) to do ROM backups. Same to restore.
Restoring to factory settings is a bit more complicated, but there are tons of threads about it here. Just search and read. You're looking for the stock RUU. Or you can flash the new 2.2 stock OTA from Sprint and it will update you and make it all stock. But you won't be able to root it.
Oh, by the way, if you're NOT rooted and you have the 2.2 update, you can't root it yet, as far as anybody here knows, so you can't do any of this.
Go into Recovery Mode, scroll down to Backup/Restore & choose to perform a nandroid backup.

Yes my phone is rooted and I need to know how can I get old rom like android 2.1 the reason for this is I did rooted but there is issue with android market which some software does not have in there like alingplayer so I was wondering if something is wrong.
Btw if I use simplyroot it has 2 steps which 1. Root, 2. Flash it. Now do I need to flash it or just root it should be fine, could this cause the market not showing all software like slingplayer
Um . . . did you do the 2.2 OTA update?
No I don't 2.2 ota update. Currently showing 2.1 but rooted I know because I can do Internet wifi tether but it seems some application missing from droid marketntherefore I need to try restore to original rom or older so I can see if the software I look for is in the droid market or not
Please give me idea on this
I'd just let your other thread run until you get your answers there, then. Don't run so many parallel threads, you'll get confused. If you want your market fixed, that's something you can do with existing threads and info. If you want to flash a new ROM just to get your market fixed, make sure that's what you need to do.

Best way to root the Desire / Best apps for rooted devices

Hi folks,
I've decided to root my Desire running OTA 2.2, but I'm not sure which guide to follow. There seems to be many different options, and all tutorials tell different things. Which is the best/safest/easiest way? I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find any threads for it. Here are some of the guides/methods I'm considering:
Unrevoked
Complete upgrading guide
RiskFreeRoot
The "complete upgrading guide" isn't really an option, since it apparently won't work if "you have installed 2.2 OTA update from HTC". A final inquiry, once I've got root access, which are the must-have apps for rooted devices? I've stumbled across a bunch of them, but it would be nice with some pointers as well
Cheers
1. Use unrEVOked
2. There are no 'must have' apps. Ignore Task Killers as they're not needed. You're better just going for a custom ROM
Thanks! Unrevoked really seems like the best way to roll. I've never used task killers and I see no reason to start now
Well, that was quick and simple enough Kudos to unrevoked 3.
Quick off-topic question: can a device rooted with unrevoked 3 still receive official OTA firmware updates? And if so, when such an update is applied, will the device still be rooted?
You can receive the OTAs (at least if you are still on a stock ROM) but your Root will most likely be gone (as it was the case with the last OTA).
Settings > about phone>system software updates> untick automated option...
because mistakes always do happen and you don't want to in the middle of a day or a weekend..
can someone here also tel me if there is a way to backup de current rom in case somthing happens and need to go back to the vender.
Use rommanager to back up old rom, and also to flash new rom. You can download it from market.

[Q] Evo with Hboot 2.10 and S/W 3.70. Want to temp root to remove apps, any options?

Hello all!
First I am not new to flashing and/or hacking phones I have done many back in my WM and other phone days, just somewhat new to Android
I have looked around and I think I already know whats up but I can't say I have seen this question asked yet...I did search
Here we go,
I have an Evo with Hboot 2.10 Stock sprint flash (as in from the sprint store) and I updated to S/W 3.70 with out first checking to see what it had...(yea stupid of me )
What I want to do is Temp root into the phone, use Ti backup or whatever to make a back up of the stock apps and then remove them. I only want to remove the sprint tv,nascar, blockbuster and other apps that I don't use that don't tie into the rest of the OS.
I tried with Z4root but seeing as I have S/W 3.70 not much happens
I don't really care to flash to new rom as I am happy with the stock flash just want to get rid of apps I will never use.
So far my only option is to wait from what I have looked up,I just wanted to know if I could execute my plan with out a full system flash.
Thank you for your time and if anyone needs more info I will be glad to give it!
Yes, it seems 3.70 has patched the exploit that z4root was using to get temp root. Until the devs find a way to get a new exploit you'll have to wait.
With the rate these Devs work, I'd give it a week and you should be able to root your phone
Thanks!
I figured that was what I would have to do,but it never hurts to ask
A quick update.
It seems as if Z4root still does work even with the 3.70 OTA update...
I was searching around on Google and found people with this exact set up that had been able to temp root.
Not sure on the why yet but I had to do a reset to factory default first in order to get z4root to give me temp root(Maybe something from the update was hanging around on the phone blocking z4??). I then fired up TI backup and started to remove the Sprint stock apps I don't use and and a few other save to remove ones!
So if anyone is looking to stay on the stock sprint rom and has S/W 3.70 this might work for you as well!
And now I am fully rooted and running the sprintlovers rom. I was able to follow the guides here and get my phone flashed up.
If anyone has the same set up and needs help let me know!
How did you get permanent root on 3.70? I was going to try the'savior' adb method, but I'm afraid of bricking. I did just download unrevoked's new beta root though. I might try that when I get home
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
how did you get root? I'm thinking of the savior method too (same evo specs). I'm guessing you used that since you're on sprintlovers?
