How to downgrade to android 8.1 from 9.0? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I have bootloader unlocked on my pixel 2 xl. On android 9 with magisk.
I was wondering if I could flash android 8.1 and keep my user date (apps, photos, settings and everything) in take and just downgrade? Is that possible? Or do I have to do a full wipe and flash 8.1 and install everything?

You will have to do a clean install and wipe. No other way around it.

Some questions: decrypt, updating o.s. with root

Hi,
I've a Nexus 5X since few days. I've unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP and rooted.
1) Update
When there will be an update, what can I do?
OTA doesn't work, it is?
I must download the firmware and..? What do I flash (I don't want to lose user data).
Then.. Must I reroot my device or reflash TWRP?
2) Decrypt
Do you recommended to decrypt the Nexus 5X?
How can I do this with/without lose data?
Can I update the o.s. also if it is decrypted?
What? What are you trying to do?
#1=yup
#2=you will lose all your data!
Yes u can update
No noticeable speed difference, so its no point
#3= Google, please read! Simple google search will work wonders

1) Read my guide (section 9) for your first question:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3206930
If installing factory images, install your mods before boot. Also, you need to root or install a modified boot.img for stock 7.0 to keep TWRP installed each OTA.
2) Can't be done. You must format your phone aka wipe internal storage to remove encryption. Then install a modified boot.img or custom kernel to keep encryption removed from the phone. Installing the stock boot.img from any OTA will automatically encrypt when you start up. It's not worth the effort it this sounds confusing to you.

How do I downgrade from nougat back to marshmellow?

Hey guys!
First off: sorry if I simply cant search but I cant find an "oficial" guide on this anywhere.
I would like to go back to the latest OxygenOS version pre-nougat (3.8.2 from the top of my head) but I dont expect it to be just a simple flash from TWRP and I was wondering how I would go about downgrading.
Im rooted (with magisk) and I have the latest version of TWRP. Preferably, I'd like to go about it without data loss but if thats impossible so be it.
I'm downgrading because I just love my Xposed too much to drop it.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

I flashed it via recovery and I had problems, probably because the partitions. I recommend you to make a backup and flash it via QPST, this is what I did and It works perfect.
Flash 3.2.8 and after that do a factory reset. It will not work without factory reset.

Is it actually that simple? Have you tried it and it didn't cause any issues?

Well since you where on 4.0 you prob where on F2fs aswell, 3.2.8 doesn't support F2fs that's why you do a factory reset, downgrading and upgrading is no problem as long as you do a factory reset and most importantly install the full rom.

What I did (with an unlocked bootloader):
Titanium backup all apps and call logs/texts/wifi via XML.
Reformat data to ext4 via TWRP.
Flash TWRP 3.0.4-1 as image.
Flash ob7 within TWRP.
Reflashed TWRP (why not?)
Booted and factory reset.
Flash SuperSU.
Restored user apps and texts calls etc via tibu.
Worked flawlessly.
Just flash OxygenOS marshmallow version ( you can download from oneplus official website, support section), then do a factory reset. Hope its helpful to you.

+1 on this. I downgraded from 4.0.3 to 3.2.8 with a simple ADB sideload. Download the ROM from the support site, then just adb sideload <name of zip>.zip. Done.
I was back on Marshmallow and had no issues. Then again, I wasn't running TWRP, everything was Stock.
@WhaleTrain when you said you sideloaded the rom and that everything was stock, was your bootloader locked or does it need to be unlocked to do it? can I simply boot into stock recovery and sideload?
Thanks

Downgrade 8.1 to 6.0.1

Hello! I updated my 5x to android 8.1. But I would like to downgrade angain to android 6.0.1 because I think I can control better the battery life with xposed.
Is possible downgrade it safely?
Thanks!
https://developers.google.com/android/images
Accept the terms and conditions, then find your device, Nexus 5x Bullhead. Download 6.0.1 factory image and use flash all. That way you will be safe as you flash everything, bootloader, recovery, radio and the factory image. Then you can root and do whatever you like.

you can downgrade to any version you like if you're on 8.1 you just need to remember the current password pin or paternt you have in 8.1 and xposed is released for 7.1.2 so you can downgrade to that version and control the battery with this mod

Thank you!
I flashed 7.1.2 and I think MM is better for me. What do you think about android 6,7 or 8?

Locked bootloader - Fresh install Android P

What is the best way to wipe+install the new Android P update on a Verizon Pixel 2 XL(locked bootloader)? I am on the Android P Beta so the Android P full release is showing in system updates but is it better to flash the OTA via USB instead or just update using the OTA system update and then erase all data?
Just update through the system settings and then do a factory reset. Unless you really want to unlock your bootloader.

Since you are looking for a fresh start anyway and willing to wipe your data, one way is to just do a factory data reset first, and then flash the OTA via fastboot. Full OTA's are already posted and available. Best of luck. :good:

Perfect. Flashing the OTA via fastboot still allows OTA monthly updates as well then?

Yes, because it is a full OTA image. Many people with locked bootloaders have flashed full OTA's when their unit stopped receiving them manually to force them back on track. The full OTA is almost as big as the complete image > 1GB. Not to be confused with the incremental OTA ~ 50MB. Best of luck.

Since when can you unlock the VZ model? I know I haven't spent as much time on the forums since bring relegated back to the land of the rootless, but I haven't noticed any big announcements anywhere. That thread seems to be for the Google version?

Flashing a Pixel 3XL

I just recently found my old Pixel 3XL. What is the easiest way to get back to whatever a stock image is? It's got an unlocked boot loader and is on a very old rooted OS. Don't care about anything on it. Just want to get it back to a fresh stock install. Sorry, been out of the flashing game awhile. My brain defaults to back in the HTC Desire HD days and it's way different than then.

Use the Android Flash Tool. Can start from bootloader mode. Since you're coming from custom firmware I'd recommend checking the Force flash all partitions and Wipe Data boxes. If you want to keep the bootloader unlocked make sure you uncheck the Lock bootloader box.

Thanks very much for the reply. I think it still has the original version of Android on it from when I got it. Looking forward to seeing how it runs on something newer.
