Locked bootloader - Fresh install Android P - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

What is the best way to wipe+install the new Android P update on a Verizon Pixel 2 XL(locked bootloader)? I am on the Android P Beta so the Android P full release is showing in system updates but is it better to flash the OTA via USB instead or just update using the OTA system update and then erase all data?

Just update through the system settings and then do a factory reset. Unless you really want to unlock your bootloader.

Since you are looking for a fresh start anyway and willing to wipe your data, one way is to just do a factory data reset first, and then flash the OTA via fastboot. Full OTA's are already posted and available. Best of luck. :good:

Perfect. Flashing the OTA via fastboot still allows OTA monthly updates as well then?

Yes, because it is a full OTA image. Many people with locked bootloaders have flashed full OTA's when their unit stopped receiving them manually to force them back on track. The full OTA is almost as big as the complete image > 1GB. Not to be confused with the incremental OTA ~ 50MB. Best of luck.

Since when can you unlock the VZ model? I know I haven't spent as much time on the forums since bring relegated back to the land of the rootless, but I haven't noticed any big announcements anywhere. That thread seems to be for the Google version?

Still no KRT16S update for me

I am on KRT16O for some time now and I got it by flashing the factory image. I have my bootloader unlocked and rooted.
I am checking OTA updates via my device daily and still no updates available.
What should I do now ?
Nexus 7 2013 LTE 4G
Go to applications and stop & clear all data for Google Service Framework. Then reboot. That is how i got the update.
Actually Google recommends to sideload the update, but I found the clear data method easier.
Good luck!
I would not use the clear framework trick, there's at least one post in here where a user did it and it needed up their install, sideloading the update is the best option

I can't find that particular update OTA file (from KRT16O to KRT16S for Nexus 7 LTE) so I will have to do a full image flash with nowipe and I hope it works.
When I root again, will I lose my data ?

There should be a thread on here that contains the URL for the small update to KRT16S. Google doesn't publish it, someone has to grab the URL from the logs once they receive the update.
And no, you won't lose your data when rooting, only when unlocking your bootloader.

Unfortunately there is no KRT16O to KRT16S for LTE version. There are the only ones available:
JLS36I->KRT16S OTA - deb/LTE
JLS36C->KRT16S OTA - deb/LTE
JSS15J->KRT16S OTA - deb/LTE
Anyways I've flashed the full KRT16S image and re-rooted and everything is fine :good:

That will be right, the LTE update was released well after WiFi, so it skipped straight to 16S (probably not a bad thing since there was a bug serious enough to hold up the full release in 16O)

OTA after bootloarer unlock?

I've got the OTA update waiting for me to select to get the November update but I don't want to risk losing the ability to unlock to bootloader if I ever want to in the future because I'm not sure of the bootloader unlockability for Bell bought devices. So if I unlock the bootloader do I lose anything, can I still get and take OTA updates from Google in the future?
You're phone will do a factory reset when unlocking the bootloader, so you'd want to back everything up. You can also still update with an unlocked bootloader.

First time side loading. Does side loading the newest stock image wipe everything? Or upgrade over it.

Sideloaded last night. Didn't wipe anything. Will lose root but rooted phone right after update completed with no issues.
Should I install the image for Verizon or would it be more safe to use one of the other images?

Flashfire doesn't fully support Oreo yet so that's a no go, same with TWRP. ADB sideload might work.
I just flashed it this morning and had no problems.
I flashed a couple of hours ago official OTA package via ADB. No problems till now.
I took the plunge and flashed the 8.0 stock factory image the done a factory reset after to make sure and it been great ever since turned off animation and it's nippy just wish battery was about better but I'll give it a few days see if that goes

Does anyone know why the battery drains so fast on Oreo even after fresh clean install
Yes, Pro v0.60. I also maintained root and twrp. I had supersu 2.82-sr3 installed at the time so make sure you have that.

Enable dev options and disable always keep mobile data on.
I just noticed that for some reason that is checked in oreo and it shouldn't be unless you are never on WIFI.

It is true that the OTA is out there. I confirm it because I signed-up to beta program to get the update and two days later I opted out to see if this is the latest official OTA ROM and I didn't get the update. So if you don't want to wait you can do the same it's safe. You can check the latest OTA here: https://developers.google.com/android/ota
The version is the same I have. 8.0.0 OPR6.170623.013.
I can confirm that jd1639's method works for people rooted with TWRP.
- download OTA (https://developers.google.com/android/ota)
- run Flashfire 60.0 (free version is OK)
- when asked "A system update has been detected", cancel
- Flash ZIP or OTA
- uncheck "restore boot and recovery images"
- press "EverRoot" and select "Inject SuperSU" and "Preserve recovery"
- Flash
- wait patiently
I tried flashing the modem FW using "Flash firmware package" on the OTA zip file. It rebooted and the screen went black for many minutes. I had to hard reset.
Can anyone confirm the 8.0 baseband? I have M8994F-2.6.39.3.03. I know that's the baseband for the 8.0 developer preview, but I wanted to make sure it was the final.

Probably a stupid question, but this OTA file- since it's ~1gb-, does it wipe the device like the full image?

No. There is no such problem. You can do it with any of the two ways if you didnt get the OTA until now. 1) Sign-up for the beta program install the update and then opt-out of it. 2) Flash the OTA files from Google to your phone. Or 3) But these are rumors and I can't be sure: An update will come at 11 of September with new Version of Oreo 8.0.1 with better support for Carriers (it is 8.0.0).

6p here, downloaded ota (NOT factory), ran Tibu, ran Flashfire 7.0 pro as described and after three reboots and a while of booted finishing, was cleanly updated to 8.0.0. took < 20 min. [emoji2]

Nothing via OTA update
Only images are available
Just get it on OTA via US IP (vpn), but update dont star
Im rooted, is't interfering??
These wouldn't allow a user to downgrade, correct? Like, to 7.1.0, use dePixel8, and then root?
Can the updates be installed out of sequence? I'm currently on the Oreo March update, can I install the May update without installing April first?

if you're rooted, then the ota won't apply via the google system update. your rom has to be completely stock in order for it to work. your bootloader can be unlocked. i don't know about flashing the ota via twrp. i've never done it.

correct, they will not allow a user to downgrade. there isn't a downgrade method available for locked bootloaders.

You have a few options. You could factory reset, then see if you get your OTA. You could also lock the bootloader, which wipes your device as well, then, yes, you will get normal OTA's. Or, you can adb side load the OTA zip from October, then November, then December to be up to date. Or, you can fastboot the factory images to get up to speed. Or, you can fastboot into twrp, then flash the OTA zips. And there ya go

@Badger50: He doesn't have to install all three, but only the December OTA. Since the OTA zips Google makes available for download are full images they include all the patches from previous months.

Have you flashed TWRP? If so, you cannot update via OTA. This only works with the stock recovery.
You have to flash a full OTA via TWRP or flash the factory image with fastboot if you are using TWRP.
And if you don't use TWRP, you still can update manually. Why are you waiting for the automatic update in the first place?
I have unlocked bootloader, my phone is not rooted, when I try to update my phone tru settings and Sysrem update it starts and than stops (couldn't install update)

This has nothing to do with root, but with TWRP. Have you flashed it or not?
You can try to flash the boot.img again, too. Extract it from the factory image and flash it with fastboot. Of course this only helps if you have messed around with it.
If this doesn't work you can try a factory reset or flash the update manually. See https://developers.google.com/android/images for instructions.
