Question about custom ROMS overall performance - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Questions & Answers

I see that there are few custom roms on here like: RR and LineageOS, so my question is are these custom roms better then stock miui, if so what are their advantages?
>hows the battery life
>gaming performance (do games like pubg lag less?)
>overall look (i would like to have something thats completaly completely dark themed, that goes for settings as well)
Can someone tell me a little bit more about custom roms? Maybe something not many people know, im kinda new to this... and i still have to unlock my mi mix 2, waiting for 72 hours to pass, so i can unlock (and yes im aware i will lose all my data when i do it, i have my backups ready
oh also btw i got the phone like 2 days ago, so anything might be helpful

I'm not a modder and can't speak to how good one rom is over another. But most of what I've read says miui is still the best overall in terms of stability, bugs and battery life. The custom roms always seem to have one problem or another, a sensor doesn't work, a basic function is disabled etc. I'm not knocking custom roms but I've never found a compelling reason to change from miui.

Can i remove the bloatware from MIUI and still get the updates? Cuz i heard somewhere that if you remove some pre installed sh*t miui wont update.
I actually dislike miui, it feels like they're stuck in 2010 or something, a lot of missing features that every other mid range phone has :/

Most things can be removed or frozen without any ill effects. If you're not sure just freeze/disable them.
If there's one thing that miui is known for it's multiple features and customizations so I have no clue where you're going with that one. It IS fugly and the first thing I do is change the awful launcher.

The stock rom is probably what you want to stay on for stability. if you want really cool customization and tweaks go with a custom rom, but remember if you are on a custom rom you cant take OTA updates from google.
I know that, but I think also about, is it really possible, that maybe 10 people can make a better Rom? Google has many employees which working on this for long time. Sorry my english isnt perfect, I hope you understand what I mean.

You have to remember that the majority of people probably dont want a phone which they can customise in any which way that they want. Google need to cater for the masses and create an OS that is at least relatively simple.
Individuals on forums such as these however, feel differently and love the chance for customization. The developers working on after market ROMS create those options and customizations for people that really want them. And their ROMS are based on the source code provided by Google and their many employees - so nothing is lost in that sense.
This is what I think any way!

Are they all "better"? No. Do they offer more features/customization? Yes. Do these features/customization often break something that already works? Yes.

Sometimes it's only one "dev" kanging code.
Regardless, we have some VERY talented devs here. And it's not like they are creating android from scratch, they are using the code that Google has open sourced, so all of the custom roms are essentially STOCK + unique features not part of AOSP. This also makes them not as stable as stock android, pick your poison
That was a good answer !
Thats where is my point, di
oes it really make sense...all time Full-Wipe...backup..flash gapps...then something doesnt work..
but on the other side it looks awesome ! Its just, what do they really change ? Is it stil safe for me as user ?

I think custom roms can often be more stable because bugs are constantly found and fixed on a daily basis. A stock rom may have a bug but will take months for the next update from google.
Also custom roms are just stock roms with additions, so its the same code base anyway.
its mostly about the tweaks that Google didn't put in .. all roms are the same to me since they all base off 4.0.x unless someone builds a sense or Touchwiz rom.
The only thing that makes roms different is the feature list and kernel

It's all very easy once you do it a few times. Customization is awesome. Like the full screen mod getting rid of the softkeys so anything that your doing (game, videos, etc) that keeps the softkeys there, will now be full screen without the softkeys. Just little things like that plus much more than make custom roms better than stock.

Bugs are constantly found for custom ROMs because they've not been tested so much compared to stock before they are being released. (Not saying that stock is bug free but each official version has gone through aggressive testing)
If stability and security are your top concerns then stay stock - this is a no-brainer. Custom ROMs are for people who are more adventurous and want to have more fun with their phones.
So there are more people on Stock or on Custom Roms ? I heard that many people say its a "developer phone", but on the other Hand people say they bought it because they dont want to flash anymore C-Roms.

Of course there are way more people on stock than rom flashers. People like my mom got the phone to use it, not to flash ROMs.
When people said 'it's a developer phone', it doesn't mean the phone is not suitable for daily use or only developers know how to use it. On the contrary, it's a phone that showcases how the latest OS SHOULD look and feel like. It serves as a reference point to how developers should design their apps.
Good answer !
I read a lot of problems like massive battery drain or FCs etc. etc. also I read about speed improvements and great battery life. I can change already a lot of things with a different Launcher.

The thing with all product discussion forums is, people will only post/seeking help if they ran into problems. (Will you go to a Samsung forum and start a thread with 'my TV/camera is working as intended?' ) So these forums are always filled with error reports/complaints. Sometimes it's hard to see if it's really error by design or just the unlucky few with defective devices.
XDA makes it even more complicated because this is a modding community. Half of the complaints are probably just human errors - bad flash, wrong radio, incompatible apps the list goes on...
Long answer short, you DON'T have to mod your phone to reap all its benefits. You are not missing out things if you don't want to customize it.
I completly agree, thats why I also started this thread. I was talking with some people about it. Its nice to customize, but do i need these small things with the possibility to get issues
Are you on Stock ?

Brother man its all about what you want and love. I could nit would not run stock. I have way more fun with custom roms. But to each there own. I must say, I would never have my mother run a custom from. First I would be her tech support, next its not what she needs. But you keep having fun with what you need / do.

I was actually talking about bugs in stock. Its much quicker to fix them in custom roms since the fix will be rolled out in a few days, but we'd be waiting months to get the same fix from google in an update.
Sure new bugs from custom roms may appear too from the new additions. But its still all the stock code base anyway...
ROMs are usually the result of tweaking, prodding, removal to enhance the phone's ability to function. Some things aren't necessary, and some things can be made to cater to a specific user. Obviously, google cannot cater to individual needs, but that's why so many ROMs exist, you can found out what you like and stick to it!
That's why I switched to android from my iPhone 4s. I love messing with my phone, and android is the platform that encourages this

New Nextbin Robin Owner

My phone should arrive tomorrow and while the Cloud feature seems interesting, I am not sure I will find it very useful. On top of that I know that since Razer bought the Nextbit brand/company it is unknown just how long cloud support will be supported.
So is it recommended to put a custom ROM on it, I assume esp on XDA it is highly advised just due to the nature of the community, but what custom ROM is regarded as the best? I am sure if is up to personal opinion but generally speaking? Also, what features are hindered besides the cloud backup by using the recommended custom ROM?
Lastly, just assuming I stick with Stock OS for now, what tips and tricks does everyone have for me? Thanks in advance!

Omni is considerably recommended by pretty much everyone, but you should check out some new roms like AICP, which was just released. The only thing that doesn't work is the cloud as you mentioned. Unlock your bootloader before setting anything up when you first get it so you can flash roms and stock images as well with fastboot.

I like versions of Android that are light and speedy, stable, and very few of no bugs. Don't need a ton of bells and whistles. Is there a rom that allows the fingerprint scanner, NFC, and even the Android pay to work( I think I read it isn't possible for Android pay to work with custom roms? Which custom ROM is best suited for that?
While I have flashed custom roms on a few devices over the years I am no expert. Are there "idiot proof" guides out there to make sure I don't brick my new phone?

NFC and Fingerprint work on pretty much every ROM, I can't say the same about Android pay though. If you really need everything to work and be stable, I'd stay on stock.

So far on stock I am liking it. I can see what people say about it getting warm, but it cools off fast. Also battery seems decent but I play some games and watch youtube on my phone so I am used to not amazing battery life. The one thing I can't seem to get used to is how bright the notification panel is. Is there a way in the settings to change this? I looked but I can't find anything, I tried some apps that do it, but they change the aesthetics way too much outside of changing the color. I tried developer options, System UI Tuner, and even an app that enables night mode but the notification area is still bright white.
Not sure if there is a way to do it but figured I'd ask.

Z2 Plus overall usability review with custom roms and bugs, battery life, heating etc

Hi Z2 plus users.
After lot of analysis and research, I finally ordered Lenovo Z2 plus today. Got a great deal.
8k INR / approx 125 USD
I have the option of getting Redmi Note 4 as well at approx 150 USD / 10k
I have gone through lot of videos on youtube with different custom rom reviews of Z2 plus, pros, cons etc.
My main concerns are:
- Battery Life
- Heating issue
- Overall usability without digging into custom rom installations and updates very frequently. I will install custom rom but would like to use it as daily driver for few months at least before I look for new updates etc. (Time is the issue - Don't get much of it these days to do all the research and experiments )
With custom roms like AICP, Jaguar - how is the battery life in terms of SOT?
How is the heating issue with custom roms which this phone is infamous for?
I saw a review from Indian tech reviewer on youtube suggesting Jaguar R14 is very stable and good rom for this. But I see some complains and users posting different issues in Jaguar rom thread.
Kindly suggest, if it will be good to go for this phone now (after 1.5 yrs of it's launch)?
Can I expect to use it as daily driver without any significant issues for next 2-3 years with custom roms?
At present which custom rom will you suggest with regards to Battery life and heating issue resolution?

I do not have the device yet and that is my dilemma whether to accept it or return it.
Does these roms also have overheating issues?
How is the battery life on these?
CitrusCAF 3.5 by miju12 seems very stable(dont flash custom kernel unless you know what you are doing) and have favourable review from the users.
and Lenovo z2 is better choice anyway
looks okay
Got mine today as well. Same deal as the OP (around $120). First thing done was an upgrade to Nougat. Sept 2016 manufacturing and there was still 30% charge left . Device did heat up during upgrade as it was on charge. Haven't observed any major heating since. I have upgraded (or downgraded) from a oneplus 2 so my criteria of heating may be somewhat biased. A 5 inch display does seem smallish though.
Geekbench 4 was 1720, 3999 which is par for SD820. So no throttling etc.
Just wondering what is so broken about stock ROM ? What's not going well with everyone on ZUI ? I did tweak the DPI to my liking - other than that ROM feels pretty much stockish android. I mean I have heard so much hate about stock ROM for this device?
Edited - Ok I am starting to see oddities. 1. Double notifications (any fixes?)
And the usual follow up questions -
- Does the U touch specialization / gestures (swiping etc) work on the custom roms for this device ? Edited - Yes I guess.
- Would unlocking bootloader reset the device ? If yes, might as well do it before setting up apps etc. Edited - Yes it would like any other device.

I have been using Rooted ZUI (I believe that’s what the stock rom is called) for a few weeks now (Xposed now, but that’s been just a few days). At first I thought I would keep it stock rooted and get all the things I need with Xposed, but the Notification drawer and Lock screen is getting on my nerves. All notifications are ICS Style, i.e. they are not expandable and they have no quick action (except USB connection to PC which lets u choose cam/file mode). Lock screen has this weird image in the middle which just sits there doing nothing. Notifications doesn't get displayed in lockscreen (weirdly I am getting 1 calendar notification there, but nothing else). I tried enabling lockscreen notification for a lot of apps, but it seems to just allow calendar and nothing else.
The U-touch is awesome BTW, but wont let me start Google Assistant voice through it (I like being able to set alarms through it)

To ROM or not to ROM?

So I have noticed some recent slow down on my phone, very minor and non-specific. I also have noticed a bit higher battery drain as of late, which could possibly be due to having 181 apps on my phone...
Either way I was considering a Custom ROM and Kernel or just a custom Kernel. However I've done this with every other phone I've ever owned (Galaxy Nexus, GS3, MotoX, Nexus 6p, Pixel XL) and I was REALLY trying to just stay completely stock android for now...is the ROM world worth it or should I just delete some apps and factory reset the phone to start fresh? My experience with ROMs is that I was often attempting to update to fix some little bug or issue and it because addicting but not really beneficial to my phone experience.

IMHO, the P2XL runs great on stock with a custom kernel and root. Custom roms, are just now starting to become available with some really good ones out there. However, in your case I think it's more of an app and memory thing causing your intermittent slow down. A custom rom isn't likely to have that great of an impact just to gain some extra tweaks, and since you'll probably still instal your 180 apps, you'll likely be back in the same boat. I'd try the kernel first, and go from there. ??

I used to have more than 100 apps earlier...but then I realized I wasn't using many of those apps..may be I was using them once in a month which can be accessed from browser as well.. So I uninstalled around 40 apps and its been two months and I never needed those apps on mobile..so you can rethink as well..Also I usually clear cache in TWRP once in every two weeks...and I restart the phone daily...

I just deleted a bunch of the apps, down to 142. I just have a bunch of apps that I use very infrequently like (uber, chipotle, panera etc.), but they are super convenient and I hate having to download and figure out my sign in on those moments I do want to use them.
Is there a way make sure certain apps just sit completely dormant unless I open them up? No syncing, no data usage, no battery usage unless they are actually being used.

ROMs, especially on Pixel devices are really losing their "allure".. You can do most anything a custom ROM can do by just rooting.. A custom Kernel never hurts in most cases but that's as far as I go anymore. Custom ROMs had their place in the day when swapping out your phones OS with another was new and exciting when Android was in it's growing pains years.. Now a days though.. Ehh.. I have to agree with this. I've fought back my urge to flash custom ROMs simply because they don't seem to offer much of anything over stock these days. I did give Lineage a try a few weeks back but got frustrated because the image quality from the built in camera on that ROM was not as good as stock and at the time there was no way to use the stock camera APK. That has likely been fixed by now, but I still see no real drive into a custom ROM.

Like what? Feel free to link me to another post or thread discussing the features if you want. I'm genuinely curious to see the what the ROM offers. The only thing I've found so far is their Google+ page but nothing that lists the key features. And their official blog hasn't been updated since August, 2017.
If there is a solid ROM with additional useful features over stock, I'd be glad to give it a shot. Just haven't found any that fit the bill yet.
Ideally:
- Ability to use the stock Google camera APK
- No major stability issues with core features working (i.e. no issues making/receiving calls or texts and no reboots)
- No major decline in battery performance
One main reason I keep stock is because I love Android Pay and the fight was ongoing with Magisk. If I go stock w/ root will I have to fight with safety net to keep Android pay (now Google Pay as of today) working? Also is there any issue with root/custom kernels and Google Fi?

Like what? Feel free to link me to another post or thread discussing the features if you want. I'm genuinely curious to see the what the ROM offers. DU Def fits the deal. Believe me. Daily driver easily. I use it with flash kernel. Amazing performance and battery life. There's things like pulse. The ability to swipe left or right on the fingerprint to get rid of notifications. 4 rows in quick settings. Set the navbar size or add buttons. Quick reboot. Expanded desktop. Ability to set the theme white or dark.

It uses stock camera app. Haven't found one bug.
I BELIEVE the RC builds they don't really give chanelogz etc
But one they release weekly or stable builds you will get the feature lists and changelogs

Need a custom ROM -- help me

I hate the stock rom of A2 Lite. Too slow and the background apps keep reloading. I need a custom rom, I already asked on other threads and no one seems to care. I'm a noob, never flashed so I don't have experience and the support is terrible around here. Please tell me which custom rom works fast and stable as of now. I need Gapps and Instagram to work, banking app, google maps. Also no bugs with incoming calls, audio or fingerprint sensor please. I don't care if it's A11 or A12, it just needs to have fast performance, battery life and background optimization. And most of all Instagram, since all the mods seem unable to run it decently. I ask for your help, thanks in advance.
Try Derpfest 12. Daily driving it currently, and still pretty good. Reminds you tho that this 5-year-old phone is already kinda slow in general because of the old hardware, so it aint gonna fix it like magic.

Thank you, I'll give it a try. How does it work with ram management?

Not great, not terrible. I tried a lot of ROMs (especially Android 11 and 12) and safe to say I can't tell the difference between them. So-so, if you ask me.

So you mean it only changes the aesthetics? If that's the case I'd rather stay on stock rom at this point..

I've long gone with stock ROM so I can't compare it. I've heard that Android 12 have more optimization compared to 11 though.
But again back to my point: even though it might fix some of your ROM bugs and hiccups - it's still not magic. Mi A2 Lite is a 5-years-old budget phone. I still got some slowdowns and crashes, no matter what ROM I use.
I mainly change my ROM because I need some features that only available in Android 11 (or 12).
If you need stability you can go back to the original android 8 rom where this phone was fantastic
For my part i need the settings of dnd that where implemented on android 10
