I have had a galaxy S9 for almost a month now and and I love pretty much everything about it except for one thing: it has been pausing all audio/video sources at around the 20m mark or sooner, without my input, seemingly at random. I listen to music while I am commuting to work, and usually have to resume the music manually at least 2 or 3 times. Yesterday, on my way home however, it required zero resumes, which confused me.
The fact is, it's super annoying to have it do this as I typically cycle to work, and having to press play while riding ruins my momentum, tempo, and mood. I have tried searching for the root cause to this, and I have even seen S9/other device users with this problem, but I cannot pinpoint a solution, just a bunch of "oh, I have this problem too" threads. Someone said it was Android system related, but I cannot be certain.
Has anybody else heard about/experienced this? And if so, is there a solution available? I feel like this would be the best place to ask this...
I have the same problem, searching on google there is two options called smart pause and smart stay that do exactly that, but I can't find those features on options to enable/disable it.
Any solution?
It might be the battery sleep function of samsung, i blocked both spotify and youtube from being put to sleep by the system, and allowed usage of them and that fixed it for me
Edit: removing it from being optimized also fixes the random pause for me

Tested right now and doesn't work.
The problem occurs in Globo Play app (a local TV broadcast application ), the video pause all the time. In youtube vanced video exit from full screen all the time. Not test Music app yet.

All i know is that you can go to the app's battery settings, disable the stuff there, make sure theyre not in battery>sleeping/disabled apps because i never had that issue since i dont let the system manage youtube (vanced), spotify and others like Samsung Music
Especially delete the apps from "Optimized apps" which actually kills the apps from playing. Might aswell then disable auto optimizing while phone is unused and the other settings from the battery that affect apps

I've seen the CPU usage by "Media" (android.process.media?) to be always extremely high (as seen by "Battery Usage" and "GSam Battery Monitor") - and seemed to be the culprit of my very fast battery drainage.
So using Titanium Backup, I Froze "Downloads 4.x.x" and "Media Storage 4.x.x" which seemed to have helped a LOT - I get much better battery life, and the CPU usage by "Media" is 0-1% as opposed to 80-98%.
Just wondering - anyone know why this is - and what side-effects I could have by freezing these two processes?
I have been dealing with this issue for the last couple of days too. I ended up having to clear the data in Google Music and start fresh.
I froze pretty much everything possible. Those two processes will make your music stop playing and prevent you from using system sounds. It might also keep the market from functioning.
I think the latest google music update messed something up though. My problem seems to have cleared up, but I also have not played music in a while to see if it comes back.

I've had this for quite a while - I don't play music - and I have not had any problems with notifications or sounds, or even downloads.
I read that it does affect Gallery - which I did just try - and yes it seems to force close. But I have always used QuickPic instead which does not seem to have a problem with me freezing these two processes.
I assume they scan the internal and external data locations for media/files... I've read that it's possible that the scanning process gets stuck in a loop if there is a corrupt file or if there is something wrong with the SD card... *shrug*
I'm just wondering if I should be worried.
I'm on CM10 by the way... amazing how much faster my GS3 is over stock...
I miss CM10 from when I was on my Epic. Eventually the day will come that I will flash something. For now I am still just tooling with the way I like things.
I read about the corrupt file issue too. I am keeping an eye on this. Every time I froze media the media-related processes, something inevitably got screwed up. Hopefully I have fixed the issue on my end.
Do you have Google Music on your phone? Just because you do not listen to music does not mean the application isn't draining your battery. It could be starting up and keeping your phone awake if there is something corrupt going on there. Probably better to seek out a solution that allows the core processes to run than to keep them frozen. More than likely you will lose some additional functionality than just the gallery FC'ing.

Nope - I don't use Google Music - and I use a separate MP3 player for playing music (I'm one of those weird people who doesn't believe in wasting my phone battery on playing music.. haha)
I don't see anything else eating away at my battery life according to Gsam (well, ok, except the evil Amazon App Store - which I can't freeze since some apps I bought from Amazon require it - UGH).

Instead of freezing these processes, when you reboot after a couple of minutes go to settings>battery and then to MEDIA and force stop. It will turn itself back on later if need be but that stops the ruanaway service with no apps force closing when used.

My phone is set to reboot every morning after Ti Backup does a backup of apps/data and I'd hate to have to go through that every morning.
(the SmartPhoneMate app also requires 1-2 reboots a day so that's why I also do that)
Yeah I'm just lazy
One day I'll take the time to figure out if it's something on my SD card...
I just wanted to make sure if there was something else I should be worried about... so far nothing major as far as I can tell.

Here is a good set of solutions and workarounds: http://geeknizer.com/fix-android-media-server-scanner-sdcard-cpu-battery-drain/
In addition, a further one may be helpful/needed: disable (freeze) the Downloads app (com.android.providers.downloads)
What was most helpful in my case is to use the Rescan Media Root app to disable the buggy image scanner altogether.

Good stuff... thanks!
Okay so the phone is great let me start there and virtually no lag or studder when using most apps again all. But I did notice today while using Google Maps, Pokemon Go, and Facebook messenger that switching between the apps there was a major system hang and a slow down. Also after having a bunch of apps open it ****s Pokemon go down completely from running in the background and even though it shows it's still open in the recents, when I go back to it, it starts up again like I just opened the app and reloaded it. Has anyone else noticed this issue? And if so is this something that could be fixed with an update or is this just bad ram management for 4gb of ram on this phone?
Pokemon Go is a terribly optimized heavy resource game, it reloads after using almost anything else on my Pixel 2
One thing I've noticed for some apps, if you have it battery optimized, it will do that. YouTube Music for me would. I would be in the car, stop and go in a gas station or whatever, come back out and it would startup like it just opened for the first time. Turned off optimization and hasn't done it since. But yeah, watch out for some games. Some are resource hogs.

This was happening to me on my Pixel 2 XL, and I thought it was a RAM management issue. Turns out it was battery optimization. I turned off battery optimization and PoGo stopped closing in the background. I did this for a couple of other programs I didn't want aggressively closed. It seems to have done the trick.

More and more reports are coming up regarding this issue - playing music in the background and then using the camera, etc.
I have experienced it when using Smart AudioBook Player playing in the background and have google maps navigation running. All of a sudden, the audio bookstops playing. I have to switch to the audiobook and restart playback. It then happens again and when I restart the audiobook a second time, google maps' navigation gets closed out. I think google needs to issue a software update for their RAM management.

In addition to that @topjohnwu has stated:
Just checked the code, it seems that the configurations are read only once when it started. If kernel devs wants to tune LMK, they would either have to: a. Modify /system/bin/lmkd to allow runtime changes b. Use resetprop to modify those read-only props, and restart lmkd https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1054409086626861056

There is defiantly some ram issues, i have been using a few music apps that keep getting killed when im doing other things. im sitting at over 3gb of usage almost 700mb more usage then my pixel 2 xl with the same apps i use. Im sure it will be fixed just not sure it will be done with in my return window and since i got it from vzw i wont have the luxury of flashing better optimized kernels . sucks having issues like this but i think all my pixel nexus phones had some odd issues for the first few weeks/months
I noticed the RAM problem while using Amazon Music and Zombie's Run! The music would stop during the first song while the Run app still runs. It really sucks to have to stop my workout to make the music start. My 2XL never had this issue.
I'm on the fence. For this amount of money, I should be happy with it, not annoyed.
Hi all,
I'm running several apps that should run all the time (AdGuard, Network Speed Meter) or for a long time (speed trap warner,...) but OxygenOS kills them after a certain period. Some of them restart automatically, some don't. Of course all of these apps are 'not battery optimized'. Is there any chance to prevent OxygenOS from killing them?
Are there custom ROMs that can overcome this problen?
I'm on the latest OxygenOS Pie Beta, but the behavior was similar on Android O...
Thanks a lot,
W
Did you try locking the app via recents menu?
Thank for the info, didn't know that.
Unfortunately it doesn't help, Adguard and the network monitor don't appear in recents. The speed trap warner automatically starts and stops when I'm in the car, i don't want to open recents manually every time.

This is not changing anything,e ven with disable battery disabled, even with adaptative battery disabled.
I have the same problem. I have not found any solution whatsoever. This is really frustrating. I've made sure apps aren't optimized. Advanced optimization is disabled. Developer options background limit is at standard. I've pinned the apps in recent apps and it still happens. Apps get killed all the time.
For example,
1. I use Google Fit to start tracking a run. Within 10 minutes of tracking, the app is closed and workout not tracked. Its not even like i touched the phone and opened other apps during this.
2. I have VoIP account setup in the default dialer. Calls come through only 50% of the time cause the dialer is closed.
3. YouTube Music, constantly gets closed if i simply pause the music. Within 2 minutes, the app is closed.
4. Trying to transfer 15GB of files through Explorer app from phone to file server, never succeeds if i don't watch the app and keep the screen on.
5. Plex gets closed and therefore my photos don't auto backup with the phone is plugged in.
This is absolutely ridiculous! Why the hell a phone with 8GB of RAM is killing apps is beyond me!
Custom ROM on the same phone, like Lineage OS, no issues. Can have optimization on, battery manager on and all. In fact, battery life is better on custom when its not killing the apps! Seems to be the only solution until OOS can stop killing apps so aggressively.

Hi all,
I seem to get this issue with pretty much every single Android Device I've owned in the last 8 years, particularly Samsung ones, and that's the good old "Android System" battery drain.
I have tried everything over the years, except rooting the device, but nothing has ever worked as a permanent fix.
I have tried:
- resetting device
- clearing cache
- restarting phone
- Shutting down background tasks
- Low battery usage location settings
- Deleting apps
- a million other things
But one way or another, Android System will eventually make its way back to the top of my battery usage stats.
I've come to the conclusion that it's the OS itself that's badly coded which causes this.
Has anyone, anyone, ever figured out a way to get on top of Android System battery drain?

I'm not sure this effects that, but while setting up phone from a factory reset etc, do you Uncheck the fields that pop up such as analytics, wifi scanning (even while off) and all the other ones ?
I uncheck all the crap i can. It's possible if you leave those checked that could be the culprit a bunch of services running in bckgrd....
Just a guess....but if you say this has happened on all your androids....maybe this is why.

Ibreak, maybe the problem is caused by apps sending reports and analytics via google services, samsung related stuff always sends analytics, even if you do not facebook, the damned thing is always lurking and consuming resources, google app and chrome also are resources-hoarders, I use ccswe to disable all useless firebase, crash, analytics, ad listeners, campaign trackers, components and some boot listeners within many apps

Enable Developer option
then go Settings» Developer options» running services
Here you should see a bunch of services running. A number of them should fall under Android System, close all related to Android System (it is ok to do so)
Then under Google Play services close all (well two of those services are persistent so they will auto start back in a couple seconds, lockscreeen service and Google location service), nothing you can do about this other than to disable Google play services which would then cause a lot of apps to cry like pandora, samsung internet browser, play store, YouTube etc.
Then go settings» apps» 3 dots at upper-right hand corner» show system apps» android system» battery» disable background activity
On each restart Android system background activity will be automatically enabled so just disable it on each restart.
The thing is it could be a number of apps or services that is causing the issue through Android system but a good indicator of which app might be causing your issue is to check Android system memory which is right below background activity, there it should show which app is accessing the memory through it the most. Disable that app or clean its cache/data.

It's in the same place you'd find background activity, but instead of going to battery, go to memory.
settings» apps» 3 dots at upper-right hand corner» show system apps» android system» memory
At the top above average memory usage you should see the app.
I would recommend using a package disabler (ccswe from the play store or package disabler pro from their website)
You can disable a lot of things but DO NOT disable
boot agent (could lock your phone in bootloop)
Android system (could hand your phone on boot up)
One UI (unless you have a different launcher installed and enabled)
IMS is important too
There's one more I can't remember right now, but you get the idea.
If you're not too sure if something can get disabled with no harsh side effects then just post the question
settings» apps» 3 dots at upper-right hand corner» show system apps» android system» mobile data
Shows a list of all the apps that have access to the network through Android system, disable the the ones you're sure you're not using or will use. That should shorten the list of potential battery drainer.
Thanks again.
It just shows an app called "face" under Android System memory. I assume that's for face unlock.
Be careful with disabling OneUI, because it will also disable the task manager and you'll got a really ugly one instead.

Yeah that's for face unlock. I used to use it but since the fingerprint scanner update it has been working really well with my screen protector so I don't really need it anymore so I have it disabled.
If you don't use face.
How i use my phone to maximize my battery is simple. Things I don't use or need I keep them disabled, some I simply disable until I need them like the play store or galaxy store etc. Every other day or so I would check those apps to see if there is an update I might want to install.

There's really no fix to Android System drain, it's especially worse when you're on mobile data.
I am testing a faulty app that it's being faulty during deep sleep, therefore to fasten testing I would need an app which can force the phone to enter deep sleep mode immediately.
Any idea?
Macrodroid or Tasker maybe

Thanks guys!
Try disabling all power management apps ie all the toggles in Device Care are toggled off except fast charging.
Do not enable sleep for any; Developer options>stand by apps, all buckets should show as active if not power management is active.
Close apps when done with them especially ones like Brave.
The phone will automatically go into a deep sleep state at screen off unless a 3rd party apk is misbehaving.
On my 10+ running on Pie this is how it runs best and gets the best battery life.
Goggle Play Services, Gmail, Playstore, Google Backup Transport, Google Framework and Samsung cloud backup are prime offenders*.
Disable these and all Google, Samsung, carrier and apk feedback. I use Karma Firewall to find rogue apks and lock the phone down as well as a package blocker.
I also use Battery Tracker from the Galaxy Store.
Nominal battery usage is 7-10%@hour heavy usage like vids and surfing. Off screen usage with AOD on is 1%@hour.
*enable when and as needed

You'll need to play with it; what works with my configuration may not work for others.
These are my current observations. My stock AT&T 10+ variant is heavy modified and watched over. As I intend to continue to use the current Pie firmware, I continue to tweak it.
What I've observed though over the last year to my dismay is any power management interferes with functionality sometimes randomly and unpredictably. It actually ends up increasing battery usage within a few days although initially it may seem to improve it.
Apparently it causes system conflicts.
I have no power management active other than the screen is set to "optimize" in Device Care and even Device Care is package blocked then unless I wish to use it to clear the cache (which the factory load version does very well).
I toggle Google Play Services/Gmail on as needed and a few other battery hogs. Point is I know their status; no random shutdowns or apk failures... and the best battery life I've ever seen on this device.
You need to go explore, find the resource hogs one by one and find a way to tone them down.
All the shotgun get it done power management apks failed miserably for myself multiple times....
Android runs very well by its self once your rein in a couple problem apks.
Many times the factory loaded versions run better then their updated versions. Gmail, Gmaps, Device Care... may or may not be true on your load; trust nothing!

I am testing a faulty app that it's being faulty during deep sleep, therefore to fasten testing I would need an app which can force the phone to enter deep sleep mode immediately.
Any idea?

When I go into standby mode in developers options each app has 3 options. Frequent, rate, working set. What should I put them on?
Also what exactly does standby mode do? Is it manually disabling that app while not in use or only when you close it? As far as closing the apps, will closing them via the recent apps screen suffice or do I need to force close them?
And my last question is what do you mean by disabling an app such as play services?

It shows the app's bucket state when power management is enabled.
Your power management is enabled... and likely wasting battery even though it's suppose to do the opposite. If power management is disabled as I suggested, all buckets are locked to active.
Right now I have GPS enabled; I disable Device Health Services com as it was constantly accessing the internet.
Usually closing the app is all that's needed.
Use Karma Firewall and Battery Tracker to help ferret out bad apps.
Depending on your model, OS/firmware load, 3rd party apks and settings configuration your system may respond differently.
I have heavily modified them on this 10+ Pie variant; it's an ongoing process. I have around 88 apks packaged disabled as well.
Androids wuv to be played with...
