Fingerprint Sensor totally DOA - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I'm on the S9+ Dual Sim Exynos. Unrooted.
So I have had no problems with the fingerprint sensor EVER. Yesterday I cleaned up my phone with some Windex and a paper towel because my son got it all dirty.
Now my fingerprint scanner is not at all responsive. I used to use it to unlock my phone and open my banking apps. I tried going into SafeMode but it was still DOA. I even tried this diagnostic code in the dialer *#0*# and it passed everything except one that something about "reset"
Anyone think there is anyway to fix this thing or did I damage it beyond repair? I really dont think its software related

Oh I was assuming u received it faulty as u put DOA which is dead on arrival. Id send it in for repair, just say it suddenly stopped working. Sounds like some of the stuff may have got into the phone? Could try a factory reset first but as u say sounds like a hardware fault.

So on the sensor test block it even passed the fingerprint test located at the bottom of the screen?

Have you looked at the chemicals used in Windex? A phone is not a window

Do a search on Windex or ammonia and cell phones, it's a no no.

Honestly if this thing is supposed to be water resistant it shouldn't be getting all screwed up from some external liquid. Also, I've noticed that the phone isn't charging properly as well. Fast charging works sporadically and sometimes the charging will change from Quick Charge to slow charge to not charging at all.
I think my particular phone wasn't as airtight as it should have been. I had the S8 too and never had these issues.
I uploaded screenshots from that diagnostic thing. What do you guys think?

I'm not sure what the reset thing means, I guess you could try a factory reset. I do know that Samsung will probably do every thing possible to throw this back on you. If a moisture detector is tripped then you're screwed anyway.

Fresh water only, try putting it in the sea and seeing how long it lasts
Windex is not exactly water... solvents eat plastics and rubber too
That sensor test, is it an Official S9 one?

Mine shows a pass for all tests
You could try a factory reset in the hope that the sensor data was corrupted by the windex but if it's the same after a reset I'd say it needs replacing

Yeah, I hate to do it but I may try a factory reset as a last resort. I'm heavily leaning towards I F'd it up though with the Windex. No way that's its coincidence that it stopped working the next time attempted to use it after cleaning it with the Windex.
Worst part is that since I have the International version it's not under warranty here. I purchased a new fingerprint sensor on ebay for $27 but I'm not looking forward to attempting to open up this phone.

Obvious question but have you cleaned it with fresh water / tap water since using the Windex? In case the windex has left some conductive layer over the sensor?

Yeah, of course. Didn't help. I definitely put too much faith in the airtightness/water resistance of this phone.
My charging port is screwed up as well. Lesson learned though.

Again, it's nothing to do with the air/water tightness, you washed it with a solvent, you damaged the hardware externally, likely melted through the layer of contacts the fingerprint reader uses when you put your finger on it
IP68 is ONLY dust / water resistant, not salt resistant, not solvent resistant, not alcohol resistant, Dust & water

[Q] Screen dead spots after a dunk

I dunked my phone in water but rescued it quickly and dried it out. The phone mostly works except for two dead spots where the W and S keys are in portrait mode. (When I press each of these keys, they register either or both of the letters next to them on the keyboard.) I have the same problem whether using the stock or swype keyboard.
I will dry the phone out more, between uses to see if ridding the phone of any excess moisture helps.
Any ideas on the problem and solution?
I don't have TEP. Given that the phone is rooted and probably has wet damage indications, would Sprint repair the screen or digitizer if I paid the $35? The phone is five weeks old.
If not, would self-repair with a digitizer bought off the internet likely fix the problem? Or is the problem likely to be elsewhere upstream of the digitizer?
TIA

No, they won't. Once it hits liquid, the store won't touch it at all.

Yeah, these screens don't do too well with the least bit of water/moisture on them. As long as you dried it thoroughly you should be in the clear. Glad to hear it worked out

There is a few of them that I know of. One is on the battery, another on the back under the battery cover and a third buried somewhere in the phone.

Usually, and I mean usually, these things are dried for a couple of days. With batteries pulled.
Get access to a real desiccator with something like Drierite, have them suck all the all air out with a water aspirator, and leave it in for a few hours.
That ought to do it.
I went Jet Skiing with my EVO a while back, and got it completely soaked. The phone went completely dead, so I took out the battery and let it dry. After drying in the sun for a while, I turned it on, and it was able to boot, but my entire screen was a different color with blotches of water marks. I tried drying it out in the sun some more, putting it in rice, you name it. Nothing worked, but it ended up fixing itself after a few days. The water marks just slowly went away, now it is completely back to normal. I hope its the same case with yours. My EVO has the OLED screen, not the Super LCD.
Has nobody here learned the "bag of rice" trick? Put a handful or two of dry rice into a ziplock bag. Take your battery out of your phone, leave the cover off and put all of it in the bag of rice. Leave it for 24 hours. It's worked for everyone I know almost every time.
Now, jetskiing with your phone might be a bit much, but it'll fix a phone dropped in a toilet and rescued fairly quickly.
The dead zone problem came back and now I have discovered it is a whole strip running up and down the length of the screen pass through the W and S keys in portrait mode; if I use the phone in landscape mode with the keyboard on that side, the whole lower strip of keys do not work. (The temp solution is the type in landscape on the other side.)
I drove to the market the moment it happened and got instant rice to dry it out in. Later I got Damp-Rid from Home Depot.
I haven't seen a real dessicator since chem lab back in college. I do have a food saver vacuum sealer.... if i could find the missing hose part I lost!
One other problem with the display is it being washed out and streaky (vertically) sometimes upon boot. This started happening BEFORE the dunk; I'm still seeing it from time to time. Rebooting once or twice usually fixes it.
Man I hope your phone recovers! Stories like this make me sad.

nabbed, that's brilliant. i've been using Damp-Rid, your aspirator idea led me to use the Food Saver system to speed the drying proces. I stuck the phone and damp rid dessicant in a FS food container and sucked all the air out. I'll leave it overnight and see what happens.

I lost the official red battery. Been using replacements. And I didn't pay attention to the moisture indicators before the accident, so I don't know any color changes. I just see several red stickers on the red plastic inside the phone. The only obvious water indicator is a slightly opaque plastic chamber that seems to have a rubber gasket around it. It's located to the right of the camera. When the phone was wet you could see water sloshing inside. Now that the phone is largely dry, you can see a few small droplets. It doesn't seem to have another purpose other than to hold water.
That small chamber your talking about is the speaker. If you play music and put your finger over it, you'll lose almost all sound.

That is only if you don't have TES.
Also, to buy a new screen it costs $100, even if you have TES or not. Sucks major balls.

I think you mean TEP, and no it is not $100 for a replacement screen. For a non liquid damaged phone it is Free with any ESRP or TEP on the account.
IF, any customer has not been paying the $4 for ESRP or the $7 for TEP the repair fee is $35 for screen repair with the option to add TEP after repair...but again...not for liquid damage. Liquid damage is something we do not repair around or for, we consider the phone Damaged Beyond repair and set you up with the # and website for Asurion insurance for the replacement.
The plans changed around 4 months back.

OK, let me clarify: Like I said before, if you have TEP or not, the STORE will not touch a liquid damaged phone. You can order a replacement phone through Asurion for $100 if you do have TEP, you're ****ed if you don't.

[Q] S4 Touchscreen not responding

I don't know 100% but if you're on Jump it should have insurance and that might cover it. Again call T-mobile to make sure.

HTC One M9- Alcohol Got Under Display When Cleaning

Alcohol problems
So, I was rubbing off a sticker from the back of my phone using a small towel dipped in pure alcohol. This phone is supposed to be waterproof and I put my back cover on the front for extra security. But, after I was done, dried it and everything, I realized that some alcohol had gotten inside the screen, I have no idea why. The whole display was dark pruple-ish and covered in stains and some weird things like dark dark spots and lines. I researched it ans found out that it was okay because alcohol evaporates really easily, so I decided to use it for a bit, since I have huge overheating issues (often going up to about 45-50°C upon usage). After half an hour of usage (it had gotten pretty hot), the display seemed to become a little bit clearer and less dark, but I decided that I should stop using it in fear of moving some bubble or ruining my already dying screen, so I put it to charge and left it alone. I was relying on my country's hot weather to finish the job, and I was checking on it every once in a while. At first, it seemed to get better but suddenly, after about 2 or 3 hours, the screen stopped turning on at all. Neuther the display nor the touch were working anymore, but sound (modifying volume) and vibration (haptic feedback for holding down "power") worked really well. I tried to restarted (volume up + power), but nothing more than some vibrations and jingles. Currently, my phone is turned off (volume down + power) and I'll leave it like this overnight, to see if anything improves tomorrow.
So, I need to know. Is my screen ruined and needs changing, or simply evaporating the alcohol will fix everything? Also, if I have to change my phone, is there a way to use HTC backup to transfer data without the "old" phone?
Thank you in advance!

Hello mate, bad luck with that happening..
First off the phone is not waterproof, it does have an ip rating but it's not up there with phones you can take with you for a dip.
As for the moisture, try a silica gel pack in an air tight bag for a few hours or over night, there are packs you can buy online for this specific treatment, if the alcohol has hit something critical then it could be game over..
Try the drying out techniques, you can find many of them online..
Drying the alcohol up shouldn't be hard but like I said if damage is done then it's done mate.
Just one question, why use alcohol on your phone? Wouldn't a baby wipe or a damp cloth do the same?

First of all, thanks a lot for your help, I will try your suggestions and keep you up to date.
Second of all, by "game over" do you mean for the screen or the entire phone? Because the phone itself seems to work just fine apart from the screen.
And, finally, that was a really tenacious sticker that I tried to remove for days. I know it sounds stupid that I used alcohol but nothing else worked. Good thing I didn't resolve to boiling water first. There is one positive point about this whole story: the sticker is now completely gone.
EDIT: I forgot to say that I made a mistake: the phone is not supposed to be "waterproof" as I previously said, but it is clearly stated on its booklet that it is "splash proof". I guess that does make a difference and I ask to be excused from my dumbness.
How much alcohol did you use... You're only meant to damp a cloth an rub lightly.. It would seem to me you poured it on.
I wish I stole my HTC M9. It's a pile of ****.

Well "rubbing lightly" surely isn't the word because it didn't work but I did damp a cloth and rubbed strongly enough for the alcohol to actually come out of the cloth and slide off the sides of the phone. I did meticulously dry it with tissues tho, but it must have been too late.
Oh, and by the way, I do hear my new email jingle coming out of it (because turns out power+volume down can't turn it off, I can just restart it with power+volume up) when I get an email notification from xda. So I am guaranteed that wifi, gmail and the speakers still work at least. I think the main problem is the screen.
I think something either controlling or part of the screen has popped by shorting out.
It's tough to call but the fact the phone still responds is promising!.
Give htc a call and just tell them it went off one day and wouldn't come on. Any evidence should have literally evaporated into thin air by then. Hopefully they'll arrange something.

Thank you for your help! Unfortunately if I want to send my phone to HTC I'll have to send it to another country because there's not much support here and it will be really complicated. But, if I understand correctly, just changing the screen should fix the problem. It won't be cheap but definitely cheaper and easier than getting and setting up a new phone.
Thanks again for the advice!

Changing the screen should work, just as long as it is 100% the screen and not some controller on the motherboard. Personally I agree with the other user who suggested sending it to htc, in all fairness htc should help you out in this case, it's obvious that it shouldn't have went off in that fashion.
I've sent my prime off overseas before, I get it back in around 5 days, great service. At the very least, speak with HTC and see what can be done and expected timelines. Changing the screen even on a one x was a tedious process, I've broken a device in the process, wasn't even mine so please take care if you go down that road, not to mention it's not exactly cheap.
BTW when I said game over I was referring to a simple method not being available to fix your phone and lastly, if you swap out the screen, you will more than likely lose your warranty.
Click thanks to the ppl who've tried to help you BTW

Please add phone details, root? twrp? and dual ,triple, quad camera... also if youre using a custom rom or stock firmware
thanks for the reply. sorry should have included more.
Its a stock S9 on AT&T. The normal camera that comes with that phone.
Sounds like the focus micromoter failed.
Dropped or gotten wet before the failure?
Any updates or new apps added?
Try:
Make sure the lense protector is clean.
Clearing the system cache
Hard reboot
Clear cam data
I did drop it a couple of days ago.
There are some cracks in the lower corner on the back, but not near the camera thats visible. You think thats whats causing this?

Yeap.
Hard to say what was damage. May just be a dislodge connector.
Likely the cam module or possibly the mobo.
Always use a good case; high G impacts can even damage chipsets internally although it's more likely a solder joint will fail.

When I do take the case off it's always on a bench top, table, etc. The phone stays there until the case is back on. The 10+ is a slippery fish with no case... I'm very careful about that.

Question Pixel 6 Pro Camera Problem

When I'm trying to take a pic in the dark, I noticed that the viewfinder and post picture has smudges/spots on them. It seems to only be on the main camera and in really dark scenarios. Can anyone confirm they have this as well?
@26donny There have been similar reports on Android-hilfe.de
look here: https://www.android-hilfe.de/forum/...le-pixel-6-pro-flecken-auf-kamera.989463.html
If you don't speak German you can use a web translator but in any case you will find that some users there have posted pictures very simiar to yours. The problem should also be visible when taking a completely dark photo...
Here is a collection of example pictures that other users have posted in regard to this problem. As you can see, it's a serious issue. I'd encourage everybody who bought a Pixel 6 to check if they have the same problem and write to Google support if so. They sooner they learn there is something wrong with some lenses the sooner they can do something about it.
Hmmmm, I don't seem to have that but maybe it needs to be darker?
You just need to move the phone slowly over a fairly dark uniform image, the marks will then become clear because they will show up as static parts of the image. This is very similar to the dirty screen effect on OLED and LCD screens. It looks like contamination on the sensor itself, either it hasn't been washed properly or a coating hasn't covered correctly when it was manufactured. Definately a hardware issue, if effected get the phone sent back, it can't be fixed by software.
I've checked mine and no sign of a problem, thankfully.

I'm quite certain not every phone out there is actually affected by this. Maybe yours thankfully just is fine. But everybody should definitely check theirs. Also since I don't have one myself yet I'm not sure whether the problem only occurs when shooting in night mode or not.

I've got the issue. Any further info on this in English? I translated the website looks like no info from Google yet

Has anyone had any further contact with google about this? They were supposed to contact me by friday after closing out my original ticket without ever actually talking to me... Here's a video of what it looks like through my view finder.
I just read an article about how Google doesn't recognize this as a hardware problem. I'm sorry for you guys here.
If it really is a hardware issue, we need to make more waves and get more attention so Google starts to act.
By the way, did you guys clean your camera lens properly? Did you try to look into it with a flashlight, to see if there is some dirt in there? And did you try a factory reset to see if it's not just a software issue? Or try it out in safemode?

Oh boy, that looks terrible.
It's not on the camera lens, if it was you would see the pattern move as OIS moved the lens and most likely it would be out of focus and hardly visible if at all.
The problem is on the sensor, it's either happened in the assembly process of the phone and some solvent has ended up on the sensor then evaporated leaving a dirty mark, or the sensor was already marked when put into the camera module.
It isn't software causing that.

That makes sense, but you still never know with Google and their glitchy software, so a factory reset/safemode try might still be worth, well, the try.
A hardware issue like the one you describe wouldn't surprise me, as already discussed in other threads, we know because of the leaked Assembly video, that a human assembles the P6 Pro almost entirely alone by, well, hand. Which means there are lots and lots of rooms for error, it might even be just a protective film over a sensor that the human responsible forgot to remove.
As reference, a copy of the video that has not yet been taken down by Google
->
As you can see in 01:51, there are several protective films (2 layers, one on the backside of the chassie, one on the lens module part) that need to be manually removed by hand, without a tool. Even if the human removed them correctly, he might have smudged the lenses accidentally by having a contaminated glove.
Besides that, as you mentioned, it might also be a defective module from the beginning, because the sensor itself was contaminated in the assembly process. Even though that would greatly surprise me, since it's a Samsung sensor and we haven't heard about this problem with other phones that use the Samsung GN1 - and since Google doesn't use a custom one, but will get the finished lens module from Samsung and then just pack it on top of the pre-assembled 3-lens camera module... that would be odd.

thanks for that video. I have done 4 factory resets (no safe mode though) and the problem persists. The person who pointed me to this thread said google support told them to wait for the december update and if it was still there to contact support again.

If you are still in the return window, DO NOT wait. Demand a replacement device. Never wait when you are in the return window. AS LONG as you are in the return window, you have power and Google wants to make you happy. After that, you will live in the shadow of their grace, which can be awful.
Other than that: If you tried 4 factory resets, safe mode will most likely not help in any way. Factory reset is always "stronger" than a safemode, since it rans a completely empty device (at least if you tried the camera app without having set up your backup, which would just create your old software problem, lel).

Did you buy it directly from Google?
A repaired device is usually a ****ty device. It will no longer have any decent seal and therefore your dust and water resistance is out the window. The assembly process is being done in a sterile environment, the repair process not so much. Which means that it has a lot of potential faults.
Especially this early on when Google didn't even have the chance to repair anything, it should be relatively easy to get a replacement.

Yeah you are right. And yes I bought it from the google store. I am going to get in touch with them again and let them know that I need a replacement.
I suspect this issue is more widespread than it looks.
I initially thought I didn't have it, but it have it too. Not that marked, but i have it.
To replicate the test better:
- turn screen brightness at max.
- go into a very dark room, close to pitch black.
- open camera, point it to a homogeneous textured wall.
- move the camera around and notice if there is a stain that stays in a fixed position on the camera.
If you have the stains, contact google and let them know.
Attached a photo that makes you see where mine is.
