Note: Haven't rooted, nor unlocked the bootloader yet; warranty not yet voided.
I was wondering, should I root it? Reasons why? I have rooted other devices before, but never had a warranty to be worried about. Also, will OTA updates stop (honestly my main worry), and if so, what's the fix around that?
Thanks in advance. - Drew
Why do you want to root it?
I haven't rooted mine. I owned Nexus devices before this phone and rooted all of them straight out of the box. Really the only reason I can think of to root this phone is theming. And I don't even think there's any other theme option other then there theme store.
Thread closed as per OP's request.
Thanks

Hey guys. I'm considering to root my international One X but I have a few questions about the consequences after rooting. I'd really appreciate it if someone could answer my questions.
1. Will I be able to unroot my phone without leaving any traces of root that might void my warranty?
2. Will I be able to receive OTA updates on stock rom? If so, will I still have root after I install the update? (let's say the upcoming JB update)

1- no cause you have to unlock your bootloader and they will see that...so you will void your warrany
2-you will be able to recieve OTA updates, but if you're running a custom rom and you're rooted you must not update through them!

So there's no way I can root without unlocking the bootloader?
No, unlocked bootloader is a prerequisite for rooting.
aww. That's too bad. I don't wanna void my warranty yet since my phone is still quite new

yep, did the same thing, i have waited a bit to see if there was problems with the phone and then when i discovered that there was nothing wrong i unlocked it....after 1 week
My understanding is that the retail verizon wireless edition (non-DE) of this phone can still be rooted. But you will trip knox, thus voiding warranty. I also understand you don't have an unlocked bootloader either.
I don't care about warranty, but I do want root. My question then becomes about future updates. If knox is tripped, can I still get to lollipop when it is released. I know I would probably loose root again at that point, but I live in the hope that eventually that too will get rooted (I know it may be vain hope, but still).
If my phone is rooted, will it block me from ever getting lollipop? Because without a bootloader, I can't put lollipop on through a custom rom either.
So, for someone who absolutely doesn't care about warranty issues, is root still a bad idea?
Thanks

Interesting, I read somewhere you can root it still, but it will just trip knox. Maybe they were wrong.
I'm seriously struggling pulling the trigger on buying this without root. But I don't care about warranty.

Nothing yet. It's a nice phone but if you need root go for the DE edition. I can live without root, it would be nice but it's not a big deal to me. I have other rooted phones I can mess with if I want.

This phone is great as is. I personally would not let no root stop me from getting this phone. But its up to you.

Can build G920PVPU3CPD3 be rooted?
Which root method should I use?

Just install TWRP and flash SuperSU.
So there is noway to do this without tripping knox?
bump!
No.
Let me add on a bit to my initial response. Rooting the phone will trip Knox. Has been this way for quite some time. Discussed across many thread here and elsewhere.
Now the question comes up as to what do you lose by tripping Knox? Samsung Pay will never work for you. Android Pay may or may not work. Many people have been able to get it working at least in part, but disable Root (via SuperSu) when using Android Pay. I don't use either of those, so I don't care.
Then the question comes up if this voids warranty. The answer is only if you say "Hey, I rooted my phone and then broke something!" If you need warranty for a physical defect, go back to stock via Odin and you shouldn't have a problem. If you root your phone and then install a ROM not meant for your phone or local (like a Note ROM or an international ROM) you are probably going to mess something up that will be immediately obvious. The solution is not to do that.
Realistically, there aren't a ton of great ROMs available for this phone and most are based on stock anyway. No CM13 as yet. If you can live with your phone un-Rooted, that might be the wisest choice.
That said, I rooted my phone as soon as I got it. I went the full route, didn't care about tripping Knox and still don't. I have run both Renegade and TeamSPR ROMs and have been happy with them.
Now you can decide what to do.
Or u could root ur phone n install xposed on it ... Rooted S6 stock rom is now compatible with xposed its better than any custom roms out there

In my case, I only need temporary root. After that it maybe removed. So it would be nice to be able keep knox from being tripped if possible. Installing twrp is an additional step too that I would like to avoid again because it would serve no purpose since root would only be temporary. I also wanted to be sure that build G920PVPU3CPD3 could be rooted. Thanks for your input guys.
I'm really keen on rooting just for the customisation options. I'd rather not lose warranty for sticking a custom boot animation and custom fonts on the device. In all likelihood that's all I'll ever need root for. I'm assuming this (rooting with a locked bootloader) is possible, but no method has been discovered yet?
In the meantime, any other suggestions on customising the phones font / boot animation? Is this possible without root? I've tried custom launchers (apex, nova, go, the Microsoft one I've forgotten the name of) but honestly prefer the stock one.
I wouldn't say it's possible. At least not in Android versions after Lollipop when Kingroot etc could do the job. That was some time ago though. Sorry, you'll have to unlock bootloader if you want to root that's just the way it is today.
Oh well, guess I'll forego my warranty then. Only another 7 days to go until I can unlock it haha.
the only thing stopping me from rooting is the fact ill lose android pay which ive really become a fan of lately. Before this i rooted every android phone i had. i would advise u to think long and hard before rooting in case u regret it.

No, you'll not. Just be sure to flash stock nougat rom, not deodexed one. And don't use supersu/phh's, only Magisk. You will get root and certified play store at same. Read my post here for more information :

So I got the S8 on BOGO last night, my dad got the S8+, mine is SM-G950U from Costco, it was placed on TMobile network, it's got the T-Mobile firmware I believe as there are about 5 TMO apps pre-installed.
I'm a bit confused, it seems that there are root options for this phone, other threads say TMo won't unlock bootloaders, yet I see there are a few ROMs floating around.
Thus far I did 2 system updates and am currently running on G950USQU1AQEF.
I see that there's a AQFJ already downloading, and the patch notes say "Device Security Enhancements"
Now I don't want to update this device to the point of not being able to root, even though I am not even sure if there's a root available.
Can someone clear up the rooting situation for me?
I don't see any rooting guides, yet I see some ROMs around. (most/all are for G950F/FD/N) - Is the version of the device unrootable?
Does rooting break warranty?
Also, i read somewhere that there are Knox counter re-setters, would that prevent void warranty?
Thanks!

There is no root for the Snapdragon variant of the S8 or S8+, it's not T-Mobile it's Samsung. Yes rooting will trip Knox and void your warranty, even flashing stock firmware won't untrip Knox. So update away, the chances of root are slim to none. I have had 14 or so android smartphones since 2009 and they were all rooted on day one. You can use Package Disabler Pro to get rid of the bloat. If you want some more customization you can use layers from this thread. And there's even Subsratam for Samsung here. I sincerely doubt that the bootloader will be unlocked in the near future.
