I'm hoping the At&T and Sprint phones will be supported; it looks like a phone with great specs.
There's no telling for sure but with this phone being a flagship, it probably will be included eventually.
Probably comes with a locked bootloader.. in which case, CM is a no-go..
However, if it's unlocked, there should be awesome development on this phone. If you plan to buy the phone, I would suggest waiting for someone to confirm this has an unlocked bootloader.
I've never owned a lg phone before. Does lg usually lock the bootloader on their phones? Are they encrypted or are they able to be unlocked?

I've never had one either but i've been lurking on the forums for other LG phones and everyone complains of the lack of support. Too bad, I like the specs a lot. But, as that other guy said, if it does become a flagship it should get pretty frequent updates.

I don't remember all the details but, I know with the official 2.2 update they made an active attempt to inhibit modding.
I think the Galaxy series just has enough support that it quickly overcomes any issues.
I've generally assumed there are enough people getting galaxy devices to overcome any such issues..
I'll google a bit and see what comes up..I have a hard time trying to understand why any carrier/mfr locks down phones..
On Att I have owned the Captivate, S2, S3 and Note. All were easily to install custom roms. Bootloader never locked. For some reason Samsung and Att has always been a safe bet from my experience.

Samsung and lg usually don't lock bootloaders HTC and Motorola do... HTC usually puts out an official unlock though... the Verizon Moto's usually get support too... not sure why LG decided to lock the bootloader on the OG... The Samsung's have been unloocked because samsung had the Nexus device. The Nexus is stripped to show the raw power of the os... they should really just make all phones have unlocked bootloaders

I personally still feel it's a bit early to jump the gun and say why things are the way they are. They may have had to lock it for launch since At&t can be a PITA.
I mean Samsung can say "HAHAHAHA, BYE." And At&t suddenly loses out on a lot of impressive kit. Note II, SGS3, and others. Sure At&t still has iPhone but, Samsung is a major android player they don't want to lose.
LG? They probably exert a little more control over.
Samsung is definitely the next best selling phone maker to Apple... they advertise more than other android makers so people associate with them... Sammy's always get compared to the iPhone while people are like the htc what I've never heard of them I get that all day at work

The Droid X came with a locked bootloader and it eventually was supported by CM. It took a while and a couple software leaks to get there though.
To update this thread, there is a strong chance that Cyanogen Mod will have support for this device.
Ricardo Cerqueira would be the person to ask.
Pay attention to the AT&T LGOG Dev forum in the next few days, it seems lie something big is in the works. Hoping for an unlock, and then devs can start building ROMs. Hopefully Cyanogenmod won't be far behind.

The unlock is most certainly coming and as of today, Nov 20 th... the bootloader has been cracked and is ready to install on the at&t and Sprint versions of the phone
Well it looks like the bootloader has been unlocked completely for the USA/CANADA/Korea versions and of course easy root tools have been released. Honestly, I can't imagine it being that difficult now that everything is in place, especially with the similarity to Nexus 4.
Any update to this at all?
I have done it. I have:
1. Rooted
2. Unlocked my bootloader
3. Flashed a custom recovery
4. Flashed CyanogenMod
5. Installed Google apps
All is fine. Except what matters most, my 3G data... 4G is not available in my area but i assume it is not working either. I think WiFi is working, but for now, that is all. I will repost if I get it to work, but for now, be careful my friends. From here I will troubleshoot, if I cannot get it working, I will create a nandroid backup and go back to stock JellyBean

LG G3 is not listed.
Figures... Thanks for the link though
But no LG phones are listed, so it must be unlisted for a reason other than no update coming...
Nexus 6 isn't listed either. I'm pretty sure being omitted from that list does not mean the G3 isn't getting lollipop.
I am not quite sure as to how the LG G3 Lollipop update was left off of the list, but I am happy to report it is in the T-Mobile testing phase. And our testing is going really well. I will reach out to product development and try to get it added to the list. Thank you for pointing this out.

Agreed
G3 is now listed as 'Manufacturer Development'.
Why on earth is T-Mobile just now in the testing phase when every other carrier has had a release. T -mobile is the new Verizon when it comes to updates, very sad. I expected more from the uncarrier.

Could be, T-Mobile is the only carrier using IPV6 only on LTE (if I'm not mistaken). They could also have required VoLTE be working, so LG could be taking longer to make sure all this works. Still sucks that it's taking so long.
i had to move from a nexus 5 to a lg g3, what a regression when you see t-mobile slowing such updates!
I've been using a Moto X 2nd Gen. New job has the silly policy of not allowing rooted devices to access our craptastic Lotus Notes e-mail. The G3's KitKat build is unusable without root. Hoping Lollipop is better, otherwise the G3 will be finding a new home.

I tried. Didn't work. They use Airwatch and I couldn't get anything to fool it on the G3 while rooted.
But now that you pointed me to it again, I searched through the RootCloak thread and apparently there is a version of Airwatch that can be fooled. I'll have to try it and see if I can get it working on my G3. That would be awesome.

The answer is so simple...
There's developmental teams for each region and NOT all of them finish at the same time... The last responses shows how childish some people are. Some devices get finished on other carriers and some don't. T-Mobile isn't always the first and they are not always the last. You can say that with ANY carrier.
If manufacturers really wanted to fix this problem they should take away the carrier options they give them, and then have a single base phone so they only need to code for a single device(iPhone 6, and 6+ as an example they are all exactly the same). Of course device prices would get more expensive then people will complain how expensive they are while blaming the carrier for the prices.

The fact of the matter being LG had 5.0 in hand early to mid Q4 and many carriers were putting finishing touches on their certification by the end of the year. We are now 2 months in to Q1 and every carriers' update status has surpassed ours. When you say there are different development teams for each region I assume you mean domestically which makes perfect sense but isn't that a nice way of saying "we're not ready yet". I'm not one to usually ***** about updates because it makes things less enjoyable in most cases but I'm a little blown away. When I heard LG G3 was one of the first handsets scheduled to get lollipop I thought for sure T-Mobile would shine once more. I just need to modify my definition of "soon" because in T-Mobile's dictionary the definition is a month or more.
Okay, so I've never owned an international phone before, but what's the difference between owning a phone like the Oneplus versus owning like a Samsung. Is the band 13 a huge deal? Or is there some sort of work around? I'm sorry I have a lot of questions. I just wanna make sure everything is okay before I buy because this looks like the phone of the year to me. I don't believe Oneplus 3 works with CDMA carriers like Verizon because it doesn't support the 700MHz band. That's what I found by Googling and reading the reviews.

I'm not familar enough with Samsung devices to say whether or not it would support Verizon out of the box as an unlocked international phone.

I'm with AndroidSlave on this one, while you could probably hack it together to make it work it likely wouldn't offer the performance return you're used to seeing with it limited by the bands. Also, anytime you do a major system update you'll probably lose your custom APNs and definitely your build.prop changes. I recommend against this phone being used on Verizon unless you just love a challenge.
And if you do love a challenge, please document the adventure for us. Others would probably be thrilled for it to work.
I waaaaaaaaaant this phone, if it's Verizon compatible, works properly with their bands, AND is TWRP/Magisk-able, then this is finally the perfect phone I've been looking for since my old V10 died. (The HTC U11 was... until I found out the specs lied and it did not work with verizon)
So..... can I have the US unlocked LG710ULM, or one of the other models, fully working** on Verizon, rooted with recovery?
**fully working, meaning all VZW bands, no connectivity/call/sms issues, and ideally VoIP/VoWiFi

In all fairness youre asking about a phone thats been released 3 days in the wild [emoji4]
LG makes it fairly clear the phone supports all bands in one device. Although not Verizon, I have full services running on ATT with VoLTE, WiFiCalling, HDVoice and VVM. Unlike my previous HTC devices where we had to spoof imei's to activate services, this one turned on like butter. Since VZW carries a G7, the ULM IMEI should activate all features on your plan.
We do not currently have bootloader unlocking on the ULM (yet), nor do we have TWRP for this version. There are not KDZ files to crossflash for this version that i know of.
As for root, oddly for myself its not as urgent as previous devices. The blaotware is almost non-existent and aside ad blocking and a few more convenient features, there isnt a mission critical need for me on this handset.
Ive not owned an LG before, looooonnnnggg time HTC guy. To me, this device is a much more refined user experience than HTC sense. A lot of things i would have rooted to fix dont need it on the G7. Honestly im a bit shocked. I dont like vanilla android but this LG UI is pretty good. Few sense features i miss like secure messaging, but i can totally live without them. The G7 hardware design is more thought through than HTC, its a remarkable, unremarkable phone. Oh and the display has to be the best LCD ive ever used IRL. 15w fast wireless charging is also a bonus.
TLR - very impressed with the phone. Full carrier services on ATT. UI is better than others. Too soon for root but hopeful for sometime in the near future.
Unless your use case absolutely requires root now, get the phone. I was hesitant but this has turned out to be the best phone ive ever owned.

Unfortunately, being good on AT&T doesn't guarantee it'll be good on Verizon-- but it's hopeful. And I could have sworn I'd read it was released LAST month, been out a month or so by now
well, either way, I won't be able to get it until next month, anyways, so hopefully by then there'll be at least some indication someone's going to be rooting it.

BTW dns66 is a non root vpn app from fdroid that allows you to encrypt and choose your own dns server as well as ad blocking servers (because its rerouting only dns requests).
It is a lifesaver for adblocking and dns privacy. No root needed.
I went with substratum/andromedia/paid theme to clean up the LG look. Macrodroid with adb hack has given me back most of my automation. 3c toolbox allows me to backup apps/data without root but im sure there are other methods.

You know I’m gonna be DMing you soon, right? I wanna do whatever you did, but I’m a little rusty. I haven’t been in the forums for at least two years now. So be ready to guide an idiot through those things. Lmao
I’m getting those two phones TODAY. I’ve been using an iPhone and I’m about to have brain cancer. Finally pulling the trigger.
I'm also unfortunately stuck with Verizon as a carrier (work phone). I've been lucky to unlock all of my devices up to this point, but the current crop of phones it doesn't seem promising at all. I'm certainly not a flash-a-holic, but i do prefer to run custom roms and have full control over my device.
Came across this thread while doing research on the current offerings from Verizon and so far your post @datafoo is the most convincing to switch. I too have been an HTC guy for a while. I felt like I needed to root my HTCs. I still don't feel a hard need to do it on this device. I would really like to see the unlocked bootloader and magisk on here but it's just not as mission critical on this version. Carrier models may have more bloatware and need it more but the ULM is pretty trim as it is.
I do like the stability of a non-rooted phone. No random reboots, predictable battery life. Get the ULM version as it should have all the bands for VZW and most all the bands for everyone else in case you switched carriers.
I'm still really happy with mine. The most remarkable, unremarkable phone I've ever owned.

Can not unlock the bootloader on a Verizon (xt1710-02) variant until someone comes up with a way. Doubt it as it's getting harder and harder with each new software/Verizon phones.
Sell it and use the money to buy a non carrier version

Why did you buy a -02, when the -01 was not much more, especially if you wanted to root?
It's been a while since any VZW branded phone was rootable, with exception of the OG Pixel, which is on again, off again.

While this is correct regarding Motorola website unlocked bootloader, prior to nougat, my Droid turbo (xt1254) and many older moto phones on Verizon were able to have the bootloader unlocked via sunshine devs at a price. However, the 1710-02 will likely not have any support from sunshine in lieu of lack of demand and its os being post 7.0.
Your best bet, if you want root, would be to sell it on swappa then buy a rootable phone.
So you can use use a -01 on Verizon? Just use my sim out of my Verizon Droid Turbo?
It is the new unlocked Z3 Play that is GSM only.

I can't speak for the Z3. I thought it had CDMA.
The Moto Z2 Play (XT1710-01) has CDMA coverage and I and the wife are each using one on Verizon. Mine is rooted. Her's not.
My previous phone was a Moto X Pure Edition and her's was a Note 5. We just took the SIM out of the old phone and popped it into the Z2 and away we went, no issues.

I agree that it's difficult to find rootable phones that work on Verizon. Hopefully when big red dumps 2G, tons will get better.
I really like the Z2 Play! It does not heat up, like the X Pure. The battery lasts much longer and it's very thin and light. I use a Sleo snap case for the weekends and it's very thin, but adds grip to a slippery phone. For work, I use a Speck Presidio Grip case and it's still pretty thin.
There is not much development for the Z2, but I like the Moto Actions & Display, which you lose with most custom ROMs. TWRP and Xposed are good enough for me, along with being able to allow super user permission to apps.
I rooted as soon at I got it, in order to prevent Oreo.
Oreo was not going to add much and change the quick settings background to light grey. I cannot stand light / white backgrounds. That is one of the top three reasons for me to root.
The wife had an X4, for a couple months. We did not like that phone one but. It's small, fast and slippery. The camera app has severe startup lag. The OS takes up 13GB of the 32GB internal storage.
For me, 64GB internal is a minimum.
Because of the lack of development for this phone, I picked up a used OG Pixel XL, from swappa, to play with. It's fast and has a lot of development and you have the freedom to go backwards and towards with Android versions, because it's like a Nexus phone, but I just don't like it. The screen is not that great. It's really dim outside. The huge bezels are ugly, useless real-estate. And it turns out that I absolutely hate the fingerprint sensor to be on the back of the phone.
Oh, should I look for a Marshmallow or Nougat? Thanks for your help.

My wife's - 01 just got Oreo, last week. Perhaps you can find one that's still on Nougat.
The Moto X Pure Edition was supposed to get Nougat, but I don't know if it ever did.
The Nexus and Pixel phone can go back and forth or upgrade and downgrade, between Android versions. I had a 6P for a while. It was a good phone, but with the rear FP sensor and no Moto Actions or Display, I couldn't live with it.
For people stuck on the non rootable version there are a couple of things previously not possible on nonroot phones. You can sideload the github version of Netguard and block hosts (ads) and internet all together. You can also install Shizuku Manager and the correct version of App Ops for more granular permissions control.

I realize that the verizon variant cannot unlock the bootloader, however is the verizon model rootable at the very least?
There is no exploit for temporary root. The only recent advance on Verizon phones is that someone smart figured out how to unlock the bootloader on Verizon pixels again.

Is there any current verizon phone that's rootable? Please forgive my ignorance. I'd been using a Moto X Pure for the last 3 years until it the charge port finally 'wore' out.
I got my first Android phone with verizon in 2010. I had it rooted that evening. The last 5 days have been my first ever, non-rooted experience :'(
The only phones sold by Verizon would be the pixel series as someone figured out the bootloader unlock. I'm not sure how long that will last but once unlocked it will always be rootable. The better way to go is buy a non carrier version of a phone that works on Verizon. For instance, the Google play version of a pixel, a Moto phone bought from Motorola that is unlockable like the Z or G series and probably developer versions of Samsung phones. They all work on Verizon. Simply insert an activated Verizon Sim. These days the question is not whether it can be rooted but whether the bootloader can be unlocked as that is the only path to root. Look for that.
Here's an Idea: VZ will Only Unlock Bootloader if People Really Want it

Can not unlock the bootloader on a Verizon (xt1710-02) variant until someone comes up with a way. Doubt it as it's getting harder and harder with each new software/Verizon phones.

The majority of the people who visit this forum and others like it are technology influencers with a much stronger voice than you realize. Verizon or any other business will listen if each of you go out of your way to let those in your social networks know that locked phones are worth(less) than unlocked phones. A locked phone might be compared to a leasing/renting a car vs. owning it, except that with mobile devices, this difference isn't made crystal clear to the buyer.
Mobile devices are advanced enough now that many could be repurposed if they were unlocked. However, that would mean that people who have less of a reason to "buy" (or should I say rent/lease?) as frequently. Being able to freely unlock devices may be bad for corporate profits, but it is good for innovation, the environment, personal privacy, and transparency.
Let's face it, we're dealing with a bully and just as people from other industries make an effort to spread the word about things you're not being told (Monsanto, Big pharma, etc.), so too should people in the tech industry do the same, yet it seems like we are re-living high school again where the tech nerd geniuses let themselves get bullied into silence by the seemingly stronger tyrant whose bad ideas rarely get opposed in a way that makes a difference.
