In all fairness youre asking about a phone thats been released 3 days in the wild [emoji4]
LG makes it fairly clear the phone supports all bands in one device. Although not Verizon, I have full services running on ATT with VoLTE, WiFiCalling, HDVoice and VVM. Unlike my previous HTC devices where we had to spoof imei's to activate services, this one turned on like butter. Since VZW carries a G7, the ULM IMEI should activate all features on your plan.
We do not currently have bootloader unlocking on the ULM (yet), nor do we have TWRP for this version. There are not KDZ files to crossflash for this version that i know of.
As for root, oddly for myself its not as urgent as previous devices. The blaotware is almost non-existent and aside ad blocking and a few more convenient features, there isnt a mission critical need for me on this handset.
Ive not owned an LG before, looooonnnnggg time HTC guy. To me, this device is a much more refined user experience than HTC sense. A lot of things i would have rooted to fix dont need it on the G7. Honestly im a bit shocked. I dont like vanilla android but this LG UI is pretty good. Few sense features i miss like secure messaging, but i can totally live without them. The G7 hardware design is more thought through than HTC, its a remarkable, unremarkable phone. Oh and the display has to be the best LCD ive ever used IRL. 15w fast wireless charging is also a bonus.
TLR - very impressed with the phone. Full carrier services on ATT. UI is better than others. Too soon for root but hopeful for sometime in the near future.
Unless your use case absolutely requires root now, get the phone. I was hesitant but this has turned out to be the best phone ive ever owned.

Unfortunately, being good on AT&T doesn't guarantee it'll be good on Verizon-- but it's hopeful. And I could have sworn I'd read it was released LAST month, been out a month or so by now
well, either way, I won't be able to get it until next month, anyways, so hopefully by then there'll be at least some indication someone's going to be rooting it.

The phone was released in early June but the ULM model didn't start shipping to anyone until July 11th, hence a couple of days. It has only been physically available for 3 days. Devs cant root what isnt available [emoji4]

Dude, thank you so much for this. I’ve been killing myself over buying this phone for a while now. I always root my phone to only: remove in app ads and from YouTube and remove useless bloatware. That’s literally why I’ve always rooted my phones. But now, this cleared it out a little. T-Mobile currently has a deal of get one and get the other one free. I’m gonna get two of them lol

BTW dns66 is a non root vpn app from fdroid that allows you to encrypt and choose your own dns server as well as ad blocking servers (because its rerouting only dns requests).
It is a lifesaver for adblocking and dns privacy. No root needed.

I'm also unfortunately stuck with Verizon as a carrier (work phone). I've been lucky to unlock all of my devices up to this point, but the current crop of phones it doesn't seem promising at all. I'm certainly not a flash-a-holic, but i do prefer to run custom roms and have full control over my device.

I love my 10 running LeeDroid but the battery is finally starting to go. It's been a great work horse for the last 2 years though.

Although I paid too much as an early adopter, the ULM unlocked version is on sale everywhere it seems, I don't regret it at all.
Feel free to hit me up, I'm a little slow to respond at times simply due to workload but i'll respond as time permits.

I felt like I needed to root my HTCs. I still don't feel a hard need to do it on this device. I would really like to see the unlocked bootloader and magisk on here but it's just not as mission critical on this version. Carrier models may have more bloatware and need it more but the ULM is pretty trim as it is.
I do like the stability of a non-rooted phone. No random reboots, predictable battery life. Get the ULM version as it should have all the bands for VZW and most all the bands for everyone else in case you switched carriers.
I'm still really happy with mine. The most remarkable, unremarkable phone I've ever owned.
I'm guessing no change yet, and not rootable, still?

Why on earth is T-Mobile just now in the testing phase when every other carrier has had a release. T -mobile is the new Verizon when it comes to updates, very sad. I expected more from the uncarrier.
Maybe they are trying to fix the roaming data connectivity issues wrt IPv6. See the old threads.

Could be, T-Mobile is the only carrier using IPV6 only on LTE (if I'm not mistaken). They could also have required VoLTE be working, so LG could be taking longer to make sure all this works. Still sucks that it's taking so long.

I've been using a Moto X 2nd Gen. New job has the silly policy of not allowing rooted devices to access our craptastic Lotus Notes e-mail. The G3's KitKat build is unusable without root. Hoping Lollipop is better, otherwise the G3 will be finding a new home.

You could use RootCloak on Lotus Notes so your work wouldn't be able to detect it.

I tried. Didn't work. They use Airwatch and I couldn't get anything to fool it on the G3 while rooted.
But now that you pointed me to it again, I searched through the RootCloak thread and apparently there is a version of Airwatch that can be fooled. I'll have to try it and see if I can get it working on my G3. That would be awesome.

The answer is so simple...
There's developmental teams for each region and NOT all of them finish at the same time... The last responses shows how childish some people are. Some devices get finished on other carriers and some don't. T-Mobile isn't always the first and they are not always the last. You can say that with ANY carrier.
If manufacturers really wanted to fix this problem they should take away the carrier options they give them, and then have a single base phone so they only need to code for a single device(iPhone 6, and 6+ as an example they are all exactly the same). Of course device prices would get more expensive then people will complain how expensive they are while blaming the carrier for the prices.

The fact of the matter being LG had 5.0 in hand early to mid Q4 and many carriers were putting finishing touches on their certification by the end of the year. We are now 2 months in to Q1 and every carriers' update status has surpassed ours. When you say there are different development teams for each region I assume you mean domestically which makes perfect sense but isn't that a nice way of saying "we're not ready yet". I'm not one to usually ***** about updates because it makes things less enjoyable in most cases but I'm a little blown away. When I heard LG G3 was one of the first handsets scheduled to get lollipop I thought for sure T-Mobile would shine once more. I just need to modify my definition of "soon" because in T-Mobile's dictionary the definition is a month or more.
I'm about to upgrade my Verizon account, and I'm trying to decide between the LG G4 and HTC One M9. Right now, rooting and bootloader unlocking are possible on the M9. Difficult; but possible. However, the G4 still lacks carrier-specific forums on XDA. I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took a whole year. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'd forgotten about jcase's news. I guess mostly I was just worried by the lack of carrier-specific forums. I've never seen it take this long for a flagship phone before.
I have 2 more weeks to make my choice. I may go your route.
We will get Root and Bootloader access, it is just a matter of time since the devs (or rather some of them) already have it and are working on making a safer method to do it.
As far as a direct unlock from LG, that is never going to happen. They have personally stated they have no plans to do the unlocker for any of the "older models" of the G4 (So no AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.).
While I do understand your concerns as Root is very important to most of us and it seems like an eternity waiting for it, but trust me, this device can certainly hold its own just based on its own merits.......Yes Root will be nice and bring forth welcome modifications and removal of bloatware, but in the mean time the phone is still an incredible piece of technology and is also a great feel in the hand.
Overall I would say get yourself the G4, you will not be sorry.

I'm a pretty heavy root app (and custom recovery) user. I like making regular nandroid backups. I use Titanium Backup all the time for so many different functions. I love my root-enabled Tasker profiles and apps like VideoReg Pro with save-to-SD capability. Plus, a bootloader unlocked phone just means so many more ROMs and a much simpler process to try them out.
I agree it's an amazing phone (hardware), but the software side of things is even more important to me. Thus my dilemma.

I fully understand, trust me I am the same way. I got my G4's on 6/17 and this is the longest I have ever owned a smartphone without Bootloader & Root Access.......It really sucked for me at first (as I did not know it was still locked down when I got it and had I known that before hand I honestly would have gone for the Moto N6 instead) after a week or so with the G4 though I am super happy with my decision and now I just see Root as being the eventual icing on an already fantastic cake.

It's not just the carriers either. They told me they have no plans to unlock my 815 TW version that has no ties to any carrier either.

Ahh, I see. I was not sure on those as I do not have one at my disposal so I had no reason to ask about it. Thank you for the information on the matter though.....I guess the H815 is just special?? Seems like it is the ONLY one LG is willing to "Fully Support".

Well Mine is H815. But it's the TW version... The H815 Europe version without any carrier ties is the only one that can unlock. I wish I had known this all when i ordered it .

You and me both, buddy. I ended up with the US991 because I was dumb and did not check the root status before I bought the G4 (Don't get me wrong I love the phone and everything, just should have done my research is all)
We technically already have root. It's just a matter of being safely packaged and released. I give it another month or 2 before we see a long hand method on how to root our phones without bricking them.
In all honesty the G4 is far superior to the m9 in just about every way, aside from the forward facing speaker of the m9.

That’s debatable. I prefer the smaller screen and resolution myself. I'd rather not sacrifice CPU/GPU cycles and battery life for pixels I can't even see. I mean, the G4 has 4x the pixels of my 24" monitor. That's just stupid
Then there's the snapdragon 810 in the M9 that some say is horrible, and others say is amazing. And yes, the stereo speakers would be nice.
If the M9 had a removable battery and the G4's camera, I wouldn't even be here. The camera is really important to me though, and the M9's looks like a toy compared to the G4's.

Oh the G4 is deff display overkill. And I'd be with the m9 personally if the camera was on par with the G4 and s6, even without a removable battery.
I went with the G4 for the camera and sd card. I have kids and taking a million pics of them are more important than hearing my ring tone and music louder without a Bluetooth speaker.
I prefer a largerish phone after my s5 and the G4 didn't really feel much larger aside from width a little.
Plus I got a free battery and 32gb SD card, so there's that too.

Yeah, we have pretty much the same requirements. Those kids move so fast, an average phone camera just won't cut it anymore. I'm tired of blurry pictures
I've used every Samsung Galaxy flagship until now. Forget Samsung and their Apple-chasing, anti-user policies. I need an SD card dangit!
Some phones take longer to get root than others, but being how this is LG's flagship, and LG has a growing followship, there will be root very soon. Just be patient! This phone kicks butt. I typically root to get easy tethering, ad removal, and bloatware removal, but this phone is damn good out of the box WITHOUT root! get it and don't look back! you won't regret it.
So I am reluctantly moving on from my Nexus 6 which I have loved and been rom-crazy with. I'm really bummed out how pricey phones have gotten, so looking for good value wherever I can. I'm looking to do the 2 XL from best buy, pretty good deal right now. My issue, and it's a big one, is that the VZW variant cannot have the bootloader unlocked (right??, man please tell me I'm wrong!), thus not root, ROM, etc. I've always loved Android for how customizable it is, but I'm worried if I got with this version I'll basically feel like I'm on a Google version of the IPhone. Is this the right way to look at it, or am I not giving a stock locked phone enough credit?
For anyone with this phone on VZW, I'd love to hear your thoughts on customizations, options that you undertake without root, if you miss root/Rom or if performance and stock are enough. Specifically, I like to be able to change color of UI/apps a la substratum, wireless tether, nav bar mods to name a few. Any locked options out there, any others I'd get without root?
Would love some experienced opinions.
You cannot unlock your bootloader. You are pretty limited with customizations. Like only Substratum with Andromeda. No ROMs, no kernels. I have read that you can sideload the P OTA. But that it's very risky and you pretty much can't go back. Go through the Google store and finance through there if you can't afford to pay for it entirely.
But I was saying in another thread that I am completely fine with this phone stock unrooted. I've when relocked my bootloader. I've had nothing but Samsung devices since their introduction. I have had better battery life and SOT than I have ever had on any phone by a long shot. I went back to my S8+ and couldn't stomach how laggy the Samsung experience is. In my opinion, you really can't go wrong with this phone. But if you're wanting to rom and customize, you'll be SOL with the Verizon version.

Having run the P2XL fully stock for a month after I received it, I will say that you won't miss unlocking, rooting, and modding it that much. Sure, it's great to me able to do all that stuff of course, however, it certainly won't hinder the functionality and experience of the P2XL. I was completely satisfied just being able to theme it with substratum+Andromeda, and just use it as it was intended. After all, it's just a phone ???

I would also like to mention that the dual partitions on these phones make doing backups, restoring, installing ROMs, kernels and all that comes with that kind of a drag. It most certainly isn't like the s1 through the s5 where the bootloader was unlocked and flashing and modding was much simpler. But on the other side. Android has come a long way. I rooted my first week and flaked everything I could. But I always found myself returning to stock because even the custom ROMs like DU or nitrogen OS left me missing something that they just weren't achieving from the stock pixel experience. I joined here in like 2012 and for once in my time using an Android phone, I'm actually content with the device as is. They're are others that use BusyBox, XPosed and or Magisk modules. I guess I'm just able to achieve what I'm looking for without root or unlocked bootloader just fine with what third party apps I use. But if you're a bit of a more easy going user, and have only flashed to flash and to get AOSP like experience with overclocking to achieve those conveted benchmark scores. That just isn't needed with this device right now. Not for me at least. Having the freedom to unlock is nice, especially if you plan to keep this device and the support stops. But in my opinion, you would be well suited even by the Verizon model. I just got the Google unlocked just in case. Anyway, I hope this helps. My reasons for wanting the unlocked bootloader are a little different. I'm looking for an unlocked bootloader so I can get rid of gapps and play services and run AOSP or copperhead.
The 200$ Google credit may have me pull the trigger before end of the month.

Not many for sale right now, but Swappa is a great place for Pixel 2 XL's, either VZN or preferably Unlocked.
I bought the Verizon P2XL from BB with the $400 off deal a few weeks ago. No regrets. I've found nohing that I'm missing from not having root. I do love tweaking and flashing ROMs but the experience on the Pixel is so good I'm not pining for it.
As far as tweaks, the only thing I'm really doing is running an immersion mode app to hide the navigation bar and Edge Gestures to enable swipe navigation. It works great.
One of the great things about having the Pixel (my last phone was they Moto Z2 Play) is the variety of cool cases available. I'm rotating between a cloth backed case from Incipio and a real wood case from Kerf Case. Both are fantastic.

So I look at things a little differently. I think you may want to look at use case of your phone and your specific needs. Yes the performance of the phones have increased dramatically, so the need to strip bloatware to optimize storage and speed isn't really there. However, for me, I have 2 must have features, Hotspot tether and Viper4A... Those are deal-breakers for me, at least. I'm sure you'll get a lot of various opinions here. Typically what I've done in the past years is keep my nose to the grind here in XDA, and then wait for an bootloader unlock method on a VZW phone. I've had to wait a bit at times, but I've balanced my needs for a new phone (if my old one is under performing), and the ability to get into a 'newer' one with full customization's. If you're willing to wait sometimes you can save considerable $$$, otherwise you lose functionality or pay more for unlocked variants. Your call completely... for example I'm on the VZW Pixel2 as there is a small window to unlock the bootloader. This doesn't exist for the 2-XL though...sorry. Good Luck!!!

$200 off, and a 18w charger? Yeah, I'd buy the 2 XL again for that price!
Coming from the 6P I ran the 2 XL for about a month or so fully stock and was ALMOST happy to wait for cust roms.
I love this phone! It's light, it's fast. Dual front speakers. Great device, even locked.
Then I realized that I really like the flashing and modding process and ability to mess with my devices, and would miss that with a locked bootloader. I'm a simple guy, messing with phones makes me a happy, simple guy.
Could I live with a locked 2 XL? Yes. Would I want to? No.
If you can't or don't want to pay outright for the unlocked version, Google offers pretty much the same payment plan you'd get with VZW (my carrier also) so you'd pay $40/mo for 2 yrs 0% interest and you still get all the VZW services and goodies since this is a VZW offered device (unlike my 6P)..
Bottom line; could you live with the Nexus 6 another year? (heck I could probably live with my Note 3 running Alliance for another year) Probably.
But for $40 mo, and the ability to mess with, tweak, flash, root, and enjoy modding your device; do you WANT to stay on it another year?

I've had the phone since launch and I can honestly say I havent even looked at the ROM's being released because it is just that good. Like others have said, the battery life is just amazing on it and its just so buttery smooth still. I wouldnt hesitate to buy the VZW version knowing I cant unlock it.

I have been using a google one on verizon but havent unlocked or looked at roms either. It runs so smooth and I never think about battery. Im up at 7 am and go to bed at 10/11/midnight and never had it down under 15% unless its hours of streaming and it still lasts until I go to bed

Yeah, I mean $650 definitely gets me closer, still don't love it. Can get $450 @ BBY vzw variant. Not sure if the $200 is worth the unlock, might be. Have some decisions to make.

If you don't plan on, or worried about rooting or modding, then save your dough and just get the Big Red version. The P2XL is still pretty darn good running full stock :good:
The Pixel 2 XL is such a great experience out of the box that I haven't had any desire to root, especially since substratum is now available for rootless phones via andromeda. FWIW, having an unlocked Pixel doesn't seem to provide many more options than a locked Pixel based on the current state of development for this phone.

Maybe it's plan specific, but I can tether just fine with my VZW Pixel 2 XL.
Thanks guys. Yeah I had no idea hotspot was included with my plan, used to not be that way but apparently it is, again another reason I don't need to root. Yeah I've heard Viper is the bomb, never looked into it but honestly I so rarely use the phone speakers, always on Bluetooth of some kind which always seems serviceable for me.
Got the vzw phone in, saved $200+, we'll see how it goes.
I'll say, this blue shift thing is no joke...jarringly noticeable. I'll check the IMEI, see if I can get a later build which I've heard had a better chance of less blue shift. Haven't taken it through it's paces yet so not sure if any of the other screen issues are present yet.
I know it's only out for reviewers and what not but I'm looking forward to the device, not only that but I'm looking to upgrade my rooted V20 and wanted to know the chances of the G7 being rooted

Honestly it's a shame I was seriously looking at this phone, but what's more unfortunate is I'm starting to feel rooting is going the way of the dodo, more or less for big brands Samsung and LG for instance. HTC has always been pretty Dev friendly, it's just a shame I stuck with Android all this time because I had the freedom to root and do whatever I wanted and now it's just become a hollow shell of itself
I'd say odds are piratically zero unless you get an unlocked variant, even then it can take months for LG to release the code for unlock. I am looking elsewhere manufacture wise. I have a G3 and it is on its last legs.

For all of you that say HTC is so great, Let me tell you.. I was once a huge LG fan back in the G3 days and V10(Which went knowwhere) and then I said I would never touch another LG again, So I went HTC10,
was great at first, a bit pricey for the money, But to make a long story short. all HTC's battery suck.. your device will die within 1 year. but you will notice the issue way before, like 6 months to less..
when it happen to me, I thought maybe it was just me, then after me, other friends of mine, started having issues, and then friends of theirs had issues, and coming from a Developer on HTC10,
I can tell you, the scene sucks. the users can be rude, even know that is everywhere.. but cant explain unless your a dev, and even know you can s/off which will cost you 25.00, no biggie, lets you rebrand your device too... and unlock your bootloaders, but as for scene, Its not really there.. a few roms and a few things, but nothing big.. I created PureFusionOS originally on a HTC10, and I created Nebula Kernel Originally on a LG G3,
then Ported the first EAS Kernel to HTC10 on MM then N and not on Oreo......... So, dev friendly as it is, it has its draw backs.. I personally wont get another HTC do to the crappy batteries..
If none believe me, click on the Telegram group on my sig and ask in there.. you will see for your self.......
as for the oods of getting root, anything is possible.. look at the v30.. look at the g6 and v20 and so on, Most didnt think that would happen... its a challenge.. I wouldnt say you would get it soon,
but sooner or later.. if you truly want software and dont care about hardware, get OP6........................... But if you want a device that can outperform most others, Samsung,LG and Google.............

Sony phones are locked down tighter than a nuns vagina so I won't go that way again.
I had an htc M9 and the battery was TERRIBLE. 3 hours I was at 60pct of little use, and this was brand new. So the battery issue has to be better than it was then. But most of us buy our phones and never plan to keep then longer than a year Max and most of us also use the payments so the OP6 and others like it are not affordable, especially for my broke ass.
LG makes great phones, they really do, but I want absolute control over something I legally own (for the time being ) and I think everyone else feels the same way. I haven't given up on LG just yet but for time being, I'm using the Motorola z2 force soley cause it can be rooted easily...well I thought easily anyway. Google's seemless update confuses me with two.
That being said, my hopes are still up, hanging by a string for the next LG model, but this time I won't buy it until root is achieved/released..if ever.

I swore to never own another LG phone after the G4 fiasco, but here I am a few years later - literally about to pull the trigger.
I don't care about the notch or the AI features - I just wanted a good phone with: a headphone jack, bigger screen, and most of all - a wide angle lens. I had my heart set out on an ASUS Zenfone 5 for a while but the wide angle camera has apparently been somewhat disappointing.
I currently own a Pixel 2 XL and a Galaxy S8+ Exynos version, both have been a blast to have because of the ease of being able to flash a new ROM and what not. I know for a fact that having this new G7 means losing the ability to customise the phone, but I'm left with little options as my desires for a wide angle lens has become far too great. I could get a secondary lens for my DSLR but snapping pictures very quickly with a phone has become the norm. Oh well, I'm probably going to get the G7, I'm prepared for a locked bootloader

Verizon will never unlock the bootloaders on any phone they sell. Basically, if you want root, the general rule is to not buy Verizon phones 99pct of the time they are not unlockable

I think that law may have been to physically mod phones? I can't quite remember.
But yeah, Verizon = no bootloader unlock, ever. I am hoping T-Mobile's buy one get one free promo will get the phone in more user's hands. More users should lead to more desires for development. The last LG phone I had was the G4 and there was an odd way of getting root on the phone.. I really hope there will be devs to work on the G7. As always, I'm ready to donate money to get root and the ability to flash ROM's.. honestly, I just want AOSP icons on the statusbar :laugh: I hate ugly statusbar icons!

Considering how incredibly slow LG was to add the V30 unlock codes to the official site, and still no OFFICIAL support for the open market V30/V30+ US998 model, I have serious doubts the G7 will be added to the list, at all. If you have a European variant, I envy you. They DO have laws that require companies to allow for modification. The US has pathetic loopholes in right to repair which even Apple and Microsoft scoff at, let along a smaller company like LG. They simply don't care about the dev or modder community. They would much rather have you get a new phone every year because the former was crippled by poor software and lack of support.
I'm rocking a LG G3 vs985 and it is really in bad shape now that thermal issues have led to SD card failure. I might have to reflow the solder to get it working long enough to see if the G7 will get root, or if there are alternatives.

I can tell you, the scene sucks. the users can be rude, even know that is everywhere.. but cant explain unless your a dev, and even know you can s/off which will cost you 25.00, no biggie, lets you rebrand your device too... and unlock your bootloaders, but as for scene, Its not really there.. a few roms and a few things, but nothing big.. I created PureFusionOS originally on a HTC10, and I created Nebula Kernel Originally on a LG G3,
then Ported the first EAS Kernel to HTC10 on MM then N and not on Oreo......... So, dev friendly as it is, it has its draw backs.. I personally wont get another HTC do to the crappy batteries..

I am currently researching various sites such as XDA now being in the market for a new smartphone out of necessity. That necessity...... Echoing the quoted portion of your previous post...... Is " thanks " to the battery of my HTC 10. I write this with my HTC 10 tethered to a charger because not connected to power once the status bar battery icon shows 70 % it is a very short wait until it bootloops with the only course of action then being a vol. Down + power button combo press to get into download mode...... Select power off...... And connect the HTC 10 back to a power source ( at which point it displays that the 70 % screen on battery power remaining is actually around 8 %.
The HTC 10 battery does indeed suck. Researching now for a new smartphone is leading me to think there are only 2 options that tick the boxes of my wants...... Among those wants being latest hardware with a Good + camera, SD card slot for storage expansion, and ability to be rooted. It appears the 2 smartphones to come the closest to meeting those wants are the LG G7 and Samsung S9 ( and unfortunately it appears presently the want of root may not happen with either of those 2 smartphone options [ Snapdragon versions. ] )
I suppose I could deal with my always-needing-to-be-tethered HTC 10 a little while longer to enter the U12 in the purchase running ( that I presume will be rootable ) but I will be concerned of having another battery nightmare with a HTC smartphone......

I haven't rooted my phones for a few years now. I dont see the necessity for it anymore ( I respect the opinion of others who have their reasons for rooting.. i just have no justifiable reason for myself)
I still use xda a lot for reviews , q&a , discussions etc just not for development.
To me, phones have come a loooooong way from the days of the LG G2x etc where rooting was a MUST if you wanted a phone that could even last the entire day

I'm actually in the exact same boat as you - although my battery isn't quite as bad on the HTC 10 yet, it's definitely dying 2 or more times a day on me. It's a great phone and I wouldn't be itching for an upgrade if the battery was still good. I like the U12+ but after this(and previously my One M8) having both battery or charging port related issues, wireless charging on my next device is a must. Unfortunately like you said both the Snapdragon S9+ and the G7 are the only current real options and neither of them seem to be getting any traction in the root department. The s9+ is especially interesting to me because I would think the USA would have a HUGE market for people buying and modifying that phone but it seems as though that just isn't so.
Back to the G7 - this is the first time I've ever even considered an LG and this device looks freaking great, but I want to not only de-bloat and adblock, but also have the ability to run free WiFi tether on Sprint as well as the fun of changing out ROMs(although the older and busier I get the more tedious this becomes).
Eagerly watching from the sidelines on what happens with this phone though!

Not a good thing reading that you had battery related issues on a previous HTC smartphone as well as the 10...... As far as my thought of a U12 being in the running for my next soon-to-be purchase each new day I become increasingly frustrated with needing to be constantly tethered to a power source with my HTC 10. I also have a Google Nexus 10 tablet ( that I believe has HTC battery hardware ) which in the past few months has been major off-and-on issues that after online researching of others experiencing the same thing attribute likely to HTC battery hardware in the Google Nexus 10. Early reviews of the HTC U12 do seem promising...... But after the cost of a flagship phone I do not want to find myself having the same battery nightmare a little over a year from now as I am with this HTC 10.
It is a real shame as so long as I am tethered to a power source my HTC 10 still runs like a champ in every other aspect. Another shame is something you mentioned in root / mod activity on XDA seems to have really declined for most smartphone brands...... And that does not give me hope of there arriving root for either the Samsung S9 or LG G7. If I am destined for the LG G7 I am considering holding out for one of the 2 merchants listed on the LG website to get in stock a carrier unlocked version of it...... In hopes that could make it a little easier / likely for eventual bootloader unlock and root. If not I will just have to get use to it being my first Android smartphone that I did not have root on.

The prior HTC phone (One m8) didn't really have battery issues, but the charging port (microusb) failed on me. I believe this is going to be much less of an issue going forward with USB C connections so I wouldn't really say that's a major concern. I've had HTC phones all the way back to the EVO 4G, and generally did not have issues with battery or power related things. At this point we're going off topic though. Hopefully someone with the talent and ability finds a passion in figuring out root for the G7.

Looking to get the 3XL when it comes out through Verizon. Most likely Verizon is going to run a buy one get one with adding on a new line in.
With the phone being stock Android already but with a Verizon locked bootloader is it more beneficial to give up the buy-one-get-one and just buy an unlocked one through Verizon? If I go the buy-one-get-one route myself and my brother-in-law are going to be splitting the retail cost of the one we have to buy

If you want root, then do not buy the Verizon version. On all previous Verizon Pixel devices "OEM unlocking" in developer options has been disabled. With that disabled you can't unlock the bootloader. With a locked bootloader you can't install TWRP. Without TWRP you can't install Magisk. Without Magisk you have no root.
If having root is not important to you, then feel free to go for the Verizon version.

I know the whole locked bootloader, TWRP stuff. It's probably been since my Google Nexus and I believe my Note 4 or 5 that I messed with rooting, unlocked bootloaders and roms LOL
But with it being stock pure Google is there really anything truly beneficial to having the unlocked bootloader to allow for rooting possibilities. I used to root my phone's just to run custom roms to get rid of them bloatware that other manufacturers put on it. But since the pixel doesn't have a bloat or skin overlay, is there a real reason for rooting capabilities?

There's always good reasons to root. Ad blocking is the number one thing that comes to mind. Utilities like Better Battery Stats to see what's killing your battery, Titanium Backup to backup your apps or uninstall system apps, WakeBlock to block or limit wakelocks so your phone isn't waking up every 10 seconds to send analytics data to Facebook/Twitter/Google when it should be sleeping, etc.
Google phones still come with bloat, it's just not as bad as Samsung or LG phones. For example, my 6P came with a ton of Google apps installed (Play Games, Hangouts, Play Movies, Docs, Slides, and **** ton more) that I would probably never use or have a desire to use. Sure you can disable most of them, but I'd rather remove them entirely.
These are the best reasons for rooting. Ad blocking is a good one, and I just enjoyed flashing new and different roms. It was fun - there was a new cm nightly every day to flash. I've got away from that partly because of less development and partly because stock android is pretty good as is. If you can't handle staying stock you could probably get your price out of the phone on Swappa and buy from Google. If there is any development to get in to. I've been stock the past year and am happy with that.

Did not think about the swappa thing. May be a good idea depending on what it's going for on there when it releases.
If I would stick with the Verizon variant, I would just need to stay off XDA and not read "what I could be doing with the unlocked variant" lol.

Absolutely Id go for the nom Verizon version....its a no brainer.

Yea, the fact that you're here is testament to the need for the unlocked Pixel. I've been mostly stock for the last couple years but tinker occasionally. I want the ability to tweak my phone even if I choose not to, especially if there is some development going on. I hope there is some life left in the Pixel community here, it's been kind of quiet. The phone is more difficult to mod and to be honest, the stock software is hard to improve on.

That was my thought too about how stock software is hard to improve on to justify buying unlocked rather than the buy one get one thru Verizon ( if they offer it) and splitting the cost of the one we have to buy.

I don't have Verizon but if I got a Pixel for half price thru my carrier I might be on that. My son has Verizon and gets his phone free from his work. He was a hacker too but has been good with a stock Pixel XL since he got it. Monthly updates - hard to beat stock on the Pixels.
As others have mentioned, having an unlocked phone generally means you are able to root the device. However, I couldn't help but noticing Google's new Titan chip that is claiming to securing passwords and the OS. My question is, how is this new "chip" going to play with "rooting" the device. Will simply having an unlocked device bypass this new Titan chip?
At this moment Verizon's 128gb model is 30$ more at 1029.99 with 9% tax 1122.69 plus $30 upgrade fee. Total $1,152.69
Google's version is 999.99 with 9% tax $1089.99
So all in all with tax one is saving over roughly 62$
Verizon is doing BOGO on the 64gb only, and offering a wireless stand. Even without the BOGO it equalizes out.
I don't need the BOGO so buying from Google is cheaper for me
I haven't rooted in YEARS. The last phone I rooted was the 1+2. OEM vanilla android is so good now I'm not even tempted. I stopped specifically when I thought about why I was installing ROMs. I wanted one that hid from Android Pay (back in the day) and allowed me to clone my phone if it broke. So, I was installing software from suspect sources to make copies of my device and perform financial transactions... Dafuq was I thinking!
This probably isn't a popular thing to say, but... how much do you really trust random dudes calling themselves "SKREET/|/KLoWnzZ", or some ****, who put together the "(-XxX[DaRTh++KriMzON ].::.KaRBoN.::.SKuLLzZzXxX-)" ROM, anyway? You've probably got some kind of banking data on that phone, right? I'm not saying Devs are crooks, but I'm certain more than one dude out there isn't on the up-and-up, I promise you. Mathematics demands it to be so. My wife would choke the piss out of me if our account got drained because I compromised our data using a hot ROM cooked up in Romania.
NOW, I get unlocked phones so I can carry a blank phone and switch carriers for trips overseas. My Pixel 2XL will replace my Nexus 6 as my travel phone, and the Pixel 3XL will be my main phone
I have been purchasing my phones directly either from Google or HTC, just so I could unlock and root. But I haven''t been rooting, even with an unlocked bootloader. I am probably not going to unlock my Pixel 3XL since I want to use Android Pay, and also play PoGo (I know Magisk can hide it, but it's always a game of cat and mouse.)
Plus, you never know. The original Verizon Pixel was unlockable for a brief time. It's unlikely, but it could happen this time as well.

Since the Nexus? You didn't even unlock the 5X? So the question is should I spend an extra $1000 so I can possibly use Adaware? You won't need Titanium if you're not flashing roms, Better BS works perfectly without root, and there is no bloatware any longer. I understand if these things like flashing roms from Romania (lol that post above is funny) are important to you but you haven't rooted in like what, 5 years now? This is really a no brainer.

Not gonna happen like it did for that one month. That flaw has been closed. I'm just waiting for a bounty thread for temp root. And I'm wondering even with temp root if you'd be able to unlock the bootloader on this device.

I do admire your optimism but they've been at this a long time and it seems they really have it locked down this time. Unless the Pixel 3s have an exploit I just don't see it. I do hope you're right though.
