I know it's only out for reviewers and what not but I'm looking forward to the device, not only that but I'm looking to upgrade my rooted V20 and wanted to know the chances of the G7 being rooted
Only European and US unlocked will get official bootloader unlock (as far as we have seen in many variants before) and root other variant may or may not find a way to root

Yup. And that is exactly the reason the v30 will be my last LG phone. At least the new HTC comes out soon and HTC has previously been dev friendly

Honestly it's a shame I was seriously looking at this phone, but what's more unfortunate is I'm starting to feel rooting is going the way of the dodo, more or less for big brands Samsung and LG for instance. HTC has always been pretty Dev friendly, it's just a shame I stuck with Android all this time because I had the freedom to root and do whatever I wanted and now it's just become a hollow shell of itself
I'd say odds are piratically zero unless you get an unlocked variant, even then it can take months for LG to release the code for unlock. I am looking elsewhere manufacture wise. I have a G3 and it is on its last legs.

For all of you that say HTC is so great, Let me tell you.. I was once a huge LG fan back in the G3 days and V10(Which went knowwhere) and then I said I would never touch another LG again, So I went HTC10,
was great at first, a bit pricey for the money, But to make a long story short. all HTC's battery suck.. your device will die within 1 year. but you will notice the issue way before, like 6 months to less..
when it happen to me, I thought maybe it was just me, then after me, other friends of mine, started having issues, and then friends of theirs had issues, and coming from a Developer on HTC10,
I can tell you, the scene sucks. the users can be rude, even know that is everywhere.. but cant explain unless your a dev, and even know you can s/off which will cost you 25.00, no biggie, lets you rebrand your device too... and unlock your bootloaders, but as for scene, Its not really there.. a few roms and a few things, but nothing big.. I created PureFusionOS originally on a HTC10, and I created Nebula Kernel Originally on a LG G3,
then Ported the first EAS Kernel to HTC10 on MM then N and not on Oreo......... So, dev friendly as it is, it has its draw backs.. I personally wont get another HTC do to the crappy batteries..

as for the oods of getting root, anything is possible.. look at the v30.. look at the g6 and v20 and so on, Most didnt think that would happen... its a challenge.. I wouldnt say you would get it soon,
but sooner or later.. if you truly want software and dont care about hardware, get OP6........................... But if you want a device that can outperform most others, Samsung,LG and Google.............

Sony phones are locked down tighter than a nuns vagina so I won't go that way again.
I had an htc M9 and the battery was TERRIBLE. 3 hours I was at 60pct of little use, and this was brand new. So the battery issue has to be better than it was then. But most of us buy our phones and never plan to keep then longer than a year Max and most of us also use the payments so the OP6 and others like it are not affordable, especially for my broke ass.
LG makes great phones, they really do, but I want absolute control over something I legally own (for the time being ) and I think everyone else feels the same way. I haven't given up on LG just yet but for time being, I'm using the Motorola z2 force soley cause it can be rooted easily...well I thought easily anyway. Google's seemless update confuses me with two.
That being said, my hopes are still up, hanging by a string for the next LG model, but this time I won't buy it until root is achieved/released..if ever.

I swore to never own another LG phone after the G4 fiasco, but here I am a few years later - literally about to pull the trigger.
I don't care about the notch or the AI features - I just wanted a good phone with: a headphone jack, bigger screen, and most of all - a wide angle lens. I had my heart set out on an ASUS Zenfone 5 for a while but the wide angle camera has apparently been somewhat disappointing.
I currently own a Pixel 2 XL and a Galaxy S8+ Exynos version, both have been a blast to have because of the ease of being able to flash a new ROM and what not. I know for a fact that having this new G7 means losing the ability to customise the phone, but I'm left with little options as my desires for a wide angle lens has become far too great. I could get a secondary lens for my DSLR but snapping pictures very quickly with a phone has become the norm. Oh well, I'm probably going to get the G7, I'm prepared for a locked bootloader

Verizon will never unlock the bootloaders on any phone they sell. Basically, if you want root, the general rule is to not buy Verizon phones 99pct of the time they are not unlockable

I think that law may have been to physically mod phones? I can't quite remember.
But yeah, Verizon = no bootloader unlock, ever. I am hoping T-Mobile's buy one get one free promo will get the phone in more user's hands. More users should lead to more desires for development. The last LG phone I had was the G4 and there was an odd way of getting root on the phone.. I really hope there will be devs to work on the G7. As always, I'm ready to donate money to get root and the ability to flash ROM's.. honestly, I just want AOSP icons on the statusbar :laugh: I hate ugly statusbar icons!

Considering how incredibly slow LG was to add the V30 unlock codes to the official site, and still no OFFICIAL support for the open market V30/V30+ US998 model, I have serious doubts the G7 will be added to the list, at all. If you have a European variant, I envy you. They DO have laws that require companies to allow for modification. The US has pathetic loopholes in right to repair which even Apple and Microsoft scoff at, let along a smaller company like LG. They simply don't care about the dev or modder community. They would much rather have you get a new phone every year because the former was crippled by poor software and lack of support.
I'm rocking a LG G3 vs985 and it is really in bad shape now that thermal issues have led to SD card failure. I might have to reflow the solder to get it working long enough to see if the G7 will get root, or if there are alternatives.

I am currently researching various sites such as XDA now being in the market for a new smartphone out of necessity. That necessity...... Echoing the quoted portion of your previous post...... Is " thanks " to the battery of my HTC 10. I write this with my HTC 10 tethered to a charger because not connected to power once the status bar battery icon shows 70 % it is a very short wait until it bootloops with the only course of action then being a vol. Down + power button combo press to get into download mode...... Select power off...... And connect the HTC 10 back to a power source ( at which point it displays that the 70 % screen on battery power remaining is actually around 8 %.
The HTC 10 battery does indeed suck. Researching now for a new smartphone is leading me to think there are only 2 options that tick the boxes of my wants...... Among those wants being latest hardware with a Good + camera, SD card slot for storage expansion, and ability to be rooted. It appears the 2 smartphones to come the closest to meeting those wants are the LG G7 and Samsung S9 ( and unfortunately it appears presently the want of root may not happen with either of those 2 smartphone options [ Snapdragon versions. ] )
I suppose I could deal with my always-needing-to-be-tethered HTC 10 a little while longer to enter the U12 in the purchase running ( that I presume will be rootable ) but I will be concerned of having another battery nightmare with a HTC smartphone......

I haven't rooted my phones for a few years now. I dont see the necessity for it anymore ( I respect the opinion of others who have their reasons for rooting.. i just have no justifiable reason for myself)
I still use xda a lot for reviews , q&a , discussions etc just not for development.
To me, phones have come a loooooong way from the days of the LG G2x etc where rooting was a MUST if you wanted a phone that could even last the entire day

I'm actually in the exact same boat as you - although my battery isn't quite as bad on the HTC 10 yet, it's definitely dying 2 or more times a day on me. It's a great phone and I wouldn't be itching for an upgrade if the battery was still good. I like the U12+ but after this(and previously my One M8) having both battery or charging port related issues, wireless charging on my next device is a must. Unfortunately like you said both the Snapdragon S9+ and the G7 are the only current real options and neither of them seem to be getting any traction in the root department. The s9+ is especially interesting to me because I would think the USA would have a HUGE market for people buying and modifying that phone but it seems as though that just isn't so.
Back to the G7 - this is the first time I've ever even considered an LG and this device looks freaking great, but I want to not only de-bloat and adblock, but also have the ability to run free WiFi tether on Sprint as well as the fun of changing out ROMs(although the older and busier I get the more tedious this becomes).
Eagerly watching from the sidelines on what happens with this phone though!

Not a good thing reading that you had battery related issues on a previous HTC smartphone as well as the 10...... As far as my thought of a U12 being in the running for my next soon-to-be purchase each new day I become increasingly frustrated with needing to be constantly tethered to a power source with my HTC 10. I also have a Google Nexus 10 tablet ( that I believe has HTC battery hardware ) which in the past few months has been major off-and-on issues that after online researching of others experiencing the same thing attribute likely to HTC battery hardware in the Google Nexus 10. Early reviews of the HTC U12 do seem promising...... But after the cost of a flagship phone I do not want to find myself having the same battery nightmare a little over a year from now as I am with this HTC 10.
It is a real shame as so long as I am tethered to a power source my HTC 10 still runs like a champ in every other aspect. Another shame is something you mentioned in root / mod activity on XDA seems to have really declined for most smartphone brands...... And that does not give me hope of there arriving root for either the Samsung S9 or LG G7. If I am destined for the LG G7 I am considering holding out for one of the 2 merchants listed on the LG website to get in stock a carrier unlocked version of it...... In hopes that could make it a little easier / likely for eventual bootloader unlock and root. If not I will just have to get use to it being my first Android smartphone that I did not have root on.
With that scenario in mind I have been researching on alternate methods to try and do as close to some of the basic things I have always utilized with root. One thing you mention is debloat. Searching with a phrasing similar to " remove bloat no root " did return a result from XDA that I likely will try And there do exist adblock, firewall, etc. apps that do not require root...... But my guess is they will not function as well as those with root. I have had a few Samsung, a couple Motorola, and this one HTC ( 10 ) branded smartphones...... A purchase of a G7 would be my first LG as well......

The prior HTC phone (One m8) didn't really have battery issues, but the charging port (microusb) failed on me. I believe this is going to be much less of an issue going forward with USB C connections so I wouldn't really say that's a major concern. I've had HTC phones all the way back to the EVO 4G, and generally did not have issues with battery or power related things. At this point we're going off topic though. Hopefully someone with the talent and ability finds a passion in figuring out root for the G7.

I started with iPhone many moons ago, then transitioned to Android / Samsung back around the S3 days. Been with Sammy ever since, but they are starting to get like Apple in that they are VERY unfriendly to the mod community and they go to great lengths to stop it. They are also killing their phones with Bloatware.
I am toying with going to the G4 with my next upgrade (coming from Galaxy S5). Does LG tend to have a major security war with their users or are they a little more lax? Does rooting void their warranty like it does with Sammy?

All root voids warranty first of all, that's why many go back to stock when returning or getting a insurance replacement. Lg is by far one of the easiest phones to get root compared to Samsung even within an app as well. Go with lg, plus the software is by far simpler and not complicated like touchwiz
So LG hasn't pushed anything into their design like that stupid Knox hardware fuse from Sammy that can't be reset once tripped? I have my final choices narrowed down to the G4 or the HTC M8/M9. Since I've never had anything other than Sammy, I'm taking my time deciding here. I'll be stuck with whatever I choose for the next 2 year cycle.
I was a long time Samsung user. I've he Galaxy S2 through S4. I opted for the G3 over the S5 and don't regret it at all. I currently have an AT&T G4, and love it so far....just waiting for root!
If root and unlocked bootloader are essential, I'd wait to get the phone. LG has replied to several queries indicating that they won't be offering an officially unlocked bootloader for any model other than the 815 variant. I haven't seen anything indicating that they'll be fighting the users like Samsung does, but they're not precisely welcoming or accepting that we want to unlock and root our phones either. I'm sure the devs on xda will work around it, but there's no time frame as to when this will happen and it's not guaranteed.

Seriously, I got an H815 but it's a US model with locked bootloader and it's really a drag. I can't decide between this phone or my S5 with everything unlocked and a plethora of ROM options. The camera is soooo good :-\.
Get the g4 and be patient like the rest of us all. You can go and get the m9 but all up to you.

Thanks for all the comments. I tried to thank everyone with the links, but the web site tells me I can only do 8 per day.
rfarrah - I have one of the new Pioneer NEX model radios. Pioneer puts out their own interface software, but it is horrid (and has been for years . . . . . . . never any improvements). I use AR Liberator which is awesome, but it has to have root to work. There is another popular third party app called AppRadio Unchained, but I've never messed with it since it costs freakin' $30! Maybe I'm just a cheapskate.
I'm about to upgrade my Verizon account, and I'm trying to decide between the LG G4 and HTC One M9. Right now, rooting and bootloader unlocking are possible on the M9. Difficult; but possible. However, the G4 still lacks carrier-specific forums on XDA. I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took a whole year. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'd forgotten about jcase's news. I guess mostly I was just worried by the lack of carrier-specific forums. I've never seen it take this long for a flagship phone before.
I have 2 more weeks to make my choice. I may go your route.
We will get Root and Bootloader access, it is just a matter of time since the devs (or rather some of them) already have it and are working on making a safer method to do it.
As far as a direct unlock from LG, that is never going to happen. They have personally stated they have no plans to do the unlocker for any of the "older models" of the G4 (So no AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.).
While I do understand your concerns as Root is very important to most of us and it seems like an eternity waiting for it, but trust me, this device can certainly hold its own just based on its own merits.......Yes Root will be nice and bring forth welcome modifications and removal of bloatware, but in the mean time the phone is still an incredible piece of technology and is also a great feel in the hand.
Overall I would say get yourself the G4, you will not be sorry.

I'm a pretty heavy root app (and custom recovery) user. I like making regular nandroid backups. I use Titanium Backup all the time for so many different functions. I love my root-enabled Tasker profiles and apps like VideoReg Pro with save-to-SD capability. Plus, a bootloader unlocked phone just means so many more ROMs and a much simpler process to try them out.
I agree it's an amazing phone (hardware), but the software side of things is even more important to me. Thus my dilemma.

I fully understand, trust me I am the same way. I got my G4's on 6/17 and this is the longest I have ever owned a smartphone without Bootloader & Root Access.......It really sucked for me at first (as I did not know it was still locked down when I got it and had I known that before hand I honestly would have gone for the Moto N6 instead) after a week or so with the G4 though I am super happy with my decision and now I just see Root as being the eventual icing on an already fantastic cake.

It's not just the carriers either. They told me they have no plans to unlock my 815 TW version that has no ties to any carrier either.

Ahh, I see. I was not sure on those as I do not have one at my disposal so I had no reason to ask about it. Thank you for the information on the matter though.....I guess the H815 is just special?? Seems like it is the ONLY one LG is willing to "Fully Support".

Well Mine is H815. But it's the TW version... The H815 Europe version without any carrier ties is the only one that can unlock. I wish I had known this all when i ordered it .

You and me both, buddy. I ended up with the US991 because I was dumb and did not check the root status before I bought the G4 (Don't get me wrong I love the phone and everything, just should have done my research is all)
We technically already have root. It's just a matter of being safely packaged and released. I give it another month or 2 before we see a long hand method on how to root our phones without bricking them.
In all honesty the G4 is far superior to the m9 in just about every way, aside from the forward facing speaker of the m9.

That’s debatable. I prefer the smaller screen and resolution myself. I'd rather not sacrifice CPU/GPU cycles and battery life for pixels I can't even see. I mean, the G4 has 4x the pixels of my 24" monitor. That's just stupid
Then there's the snapdragon 810 in the M9 that some say is horrible, and others say is amazing. And yes, the stereo speakers would be nice.
If the M9 had a removable battery and the G4's camera, I wouldn't even be here. The camera is really important to me though, and the M9's looks like a toy compared to the G4's.

Oh the G4 is deff display overkill. And I'd be with the m9 personally if the camera was on par with the G4 and s6, even without a removable battery.
I went with the G4 for the camera and sd card. I have kids and taking a million pics of them are more important than hearing my ring tone and music louder without a Bluetooth speaker.
I prefer a largerish phone after my s5 and the G4 didn't really feel much larger aside from width a little.
Plus I got a free battery and 32gb SD card, so there's that too.

Yeah, we have pretty much the same requirements. Those kids move so fast, an average phone camera just won't cut it anymore. I'm tired of blurry pictures
I've used every Samsung Galaxy flagship until now. Forget Samsung and their Apple-chasing, anti-user policies. I need an SD card dangit!
Some phones take longer to get root than others, but being how this is LG's flagship, and LG has a growing followship, there will be root very soon. Just be patient! This phone kicks butt. I typically root to get easy tethering, ad removal, and bloatware removal, but this phone is damn good out of the box WITHOUT root! get it and don't look back! you won't regret it.

It's time for a new phone and I'm on the hunt doing research. Such a hard choice! I've had a Galaxy S1, S3 and S5 and loved them all so I went and got the S6 the other day without ever reading about it. When I went to install my ROM of choice I found out that Samsung is now officially releasing only the douche ROM...so I returned it 3 days later.
I read that the 5X was going to be released soon and also read some stuff on the Moto X Play (which is what it's called here in Canada, available at Telus). The 5X seems ok...I could potentially wait a month for that delivery (if Telus even carries it), or I could go get the Play or the G4 today--which seems to be the forerunner at this point due to it having slightly better specs than the Play.
My questions relate to custom ROM experiences. I like to have AOSP support with all the fancy settings available to me! I especially like hardware keys. My S3 was able to turn the flashlight on by holding the home key. I know the G4 doesn't have hardware buttons anymore so I'm not even sure if that's a thing. Maybe volume keys instead? That might create problems with track seeking though. Whatever...as long as there are options lol.
So...what kind of experiences--good and bad--have you guys had with this phone? Is there good ROM support? It seems like M will be out soon...does that mean the code will also be available for developers? I see a few ROM's available but unfortunately I can't test them out because I don't actually have the phone.
I'm sure I'll have more questions but thought I'd get a discussion going for those interested in sharing their experiences.

i'm somehow convinced that when the official android M update from LG finally released, the developer scene would start to bud here and there.
but for now, i think the developers are gathering only in some unlocked bootloader variants...

The play is a midranger with a good battery not comparable with a flagship like the G4. Maybe you were thinking of the Style or Pure as its known in the US.

Not too much at the moment. Just root. To use xposed entails risk as there is no recovery. Unless you can source a H815 euro variant of the G4.
I'm sure I'll have more questions but thought I'd get a discussion going for those interested in sharing their experiences.

I'll be honest, I was about to use my middlefinger to write an aggressive post for you but the intelligent part of my brain said "STOP! THINK!". So I thought...and thought again. Coming from Nexus devices running CM only, on the G4 I have yet to find a reason to even consider a custom ROM. I sometimes miss the pure Android but that's all about it. It's the first time since my Nokia E72 in 2007 I did not switched a ROM for more than a month. Let's see where this goes. Good point mate!

It's too early for the G4 now. Currently only the EU H815 model has an unlockable bootloader. LG's official page says more devices will be added to the list soon, but I wouldn't count on that. Since you're from Canada and propably won't get the H815 on contract, it'd be risky. If I had your patience, I'd wait for the 5X. You seem to be an Android purist. I wouldn't want to deal with a device running a custom version of Android. Also, even if CM or any other AOSP ROM would make its way to the various variants of the G4, they're going to have these little issues here and there because of bad or missing documentation from the manufacturer. It'll be a buggy experience overall. For example, I'm sure the camera will be a mess on CM/AOSP/A

It's great so far. Running vanilla Android was a nice experience but I got bored. Having a custom UI with the option to use a custom vanilla Android is the perfect place for me. But as I said, right now I have no reason to go vanilla.
5X = 32gig no sd
G4 = sd
I can't live with 32gig so G4 fills all my needs. Stock too.

There are some things that vanilla doesn't seem to offer me. Some features are not needed (pie and other recent/quick access features, and others I can't even think of cos I never turn them on in my current ROM lol); however, the ability to alter the power menu, the ability to add custom hardware keys (mainly for flashlight; if not a hardware key, then at least a toggle in the tray, or in the power menu), status bar changes (clock, color, battery % in numbers, double-tap for screen off), led control, etc (perhaps all these can be altered with apps or via Xposed. @onetwelve You said above there could be problems with Xposed because there's no recovery. You mean TWRP recovery? You can't mean that, so I'm confused :s).
The lack of camera support would suck. I am by no means a photographer; the main thing I use my camera for are taking random photos and also taking quick snapshots that require a fast-focus to be achieved. It's frustrating when camera apps don't work properly. I think pretty much every camera is going to be good enough for my purposes. 21MP vs 16MP = whoopdeedoo.
SD card support is not a concern for me. I've lived with 16GB for years and it's almost never been a problem unless I record a bunch of videos before I get home. I don't put music on my device (only audiobooks). Getting a 32GB internal memory phone would be like landing in a pot of gold haha!
My buddy has been nagging me to get an iPhone 6 and jailbreak it--he says I'll never turn back...but I'm not sure, I love Android and don't really wanna learn a whole new interface.

There is no custom recovery as in there is none for the G4 variant you most likely will be getting in Canada, as of now. However, there are reports of an unofficial Bootloader unlock method coming for many variants of the G4. It's important to note that in this case you must not take OTA updates or the unofficial unlock method won't work. Anyway, no need to get into detail much.
There's no need for a custom recovery since flash fire is enough to get xposed working.
Btw. Is that a Rick & Morty reference?

I guess you mean the 5X? In this case, yes, you can expect the great minds of XDA to develop for this device and since the 5X is relatively cheap and people tending towards mid-high-range devices, you can expect a big fellowship in the 5X development section and forum in general.
Nvm, I was referring to the "whoopdeedoo". Realized that "whoopdeedoo" is a very common saying. Just binge-finished Rick & Morty but somehow my brain is still processing the information.

am not too knowledgable on the xposed side of things. it was an interaction i had with someone on youtube and they said if you do not have access to kdz, then in case of a boot loop you would not be able to recover. since you're in canada and the carriers there are no better than us carriers, xposed might not be an option unless you REALLY know what you're doing. There's these TOT's instead so somebody more knowledgeable can answer.

yeah, vendors keep cameras very close to their chest. Only stock based roms will preserve camera or lets say are more certain to preserve it.
other stuff is going to be buggy or not work too well. this is down to developers so you end up using 3rd party cameras but its not the same as stock when it comes to cameras.
The cameras on the nexii are pretty good from what i've heard. But I would contend that the lack of OIS is an egregious omission when the last two nexii had it. Maddening! why go to the trouble to develop such a good camera and leave it out (!!!)
This means you will have to have a good handhold to avoid blur or camera shake indoors or in low light. But if the light is enough i think you will be happy with the nexus cameras. They really have come a long way since the Nexus 4. In good light i would not be surprised to see them rivaling the S6/G4 in terms of preservation of details. They are that good. But unfortunately thats it.
Btw the nexii are 12MP shooters. Don't let the mega pickles bother you just check out the photos at the pixel level and see for yourself.

thought the whole point of getting an iphone is that there is no need to do jailbreaking. not nowadays anyway. why would you want to jailbreak ios9 ?
Hi, I was hoping someone could explain something for me. I'm looking through the forums and seeing the threads for roms and kernels specifically for H815 and H811, usually separate. I'm from the US, considering the G4 on T-Mobile. As I understand it, both can have the bootloaders unlocked (H811 comes unlocked, and the H815 can be unlocked).
I know the H815 has had Marshmallow released, and the H811 has not yet.
What I'm wondering and what I can't find a straight answer to is why, for example, when I look at CM downloads, I can find a v13 for H815 but only a v12.x for H811. The best answer I could find is something about there not being a released bootloader or modem for the H811 compatible with that. I don't know if that was accurate or not, but if it is that confuses me because I've had a Galaxy SIII whose last carrier Android release was 4.4.2, yet is still getting CM 13 releases pretty quickly and other AOSP updates from developers. Is the reason the H811 isn't just because there isn't enough people or developers using that model, so less are working on an updated kernel compatibile with it? I've never had to update my modem or bootloader for an update between Android versions, so I'm assuming that answer was wrong unless there's something I'm missing? I don't think there's a real hardware difference between the two models besides the modems/bands supported, right?
I'm trying to figure out my best option here, have had a Samsung Galaxy SIII since Aug. 2012, bootloader unlocked not too long after, and have really liked it until recently when I was having a slight issue with streaming audio over my mobile network and decided to switch back to stock for a short time to see if it fixed it and compare some settings, stupidly not realizing that in the 3 years I had been away from the stock firmware that Verizon had locked down the firmware again to 4.4.2 and nobody has figured out how to get around it.
I'm looking for a phone that I can install AOSP or CM or similar Roms on (Although I'm not against playing around with the LG Stock Android, it doesn't look that bad, but I want the choice) and am really hoping user removable battery and MicroSD slot. It's not a major must, but I would also like a fairly good camera.
Sounds like my best bet is either the Nexus devices or the LG G3 or the G4 H811. These all either have unlocked boot loaders or ones that are easy to more or less unlock, which I know is something I'll want if I don't want to be stuck on the version of Android the manufacturer supports. I can't stand the size the Nexus 6 or 6P is, haven't had a chance to see the 5X, but it's lacking the removable battery and memory card. I'm currently on Verizon, and would prefer to stay there, but am considering T-Mobile as a potential possibility. If I go with a G3 I'll stay with Verizon, if I go with a G4 I'll have to switch to T-Mobile.
I've seen the G3 and G4 in person, I like both, but prefer the G4 just based on the color temp of the screen, the camera, and battery charging (The G3's in Verizon's store were all low on battery because the charger couldn't keep up, but the G4 was fine I'm assuming because of the quick charging). But, it's looking like the G3 is currently better in terms of development support than the G4. My worry is in a year or so I may be stuck on a version of Android, whereas with my GS3 (Up until it got re-locked) it was still being actively updated. I can get the G3 online for ~200$ versus ~$400 for the G4, and the rest of the specs on the phone aren't different enough for me to care that much about seeing as my GSIII was handing all my requirements until recently.
Wasn't sure if this was the best place to post this, but my only option for the G4 is the T-Mobile H811, and if there is a big reason why that isn't supported (Whether it's because there's not a large enough user base or something else) then perhaps it's best I not consider that device?
It's been a long time since I've done much with porting Android and have been focused on the device I've had for the past 3.5 years, so I might be missing something here. If anyone can clear some of this up for me, it's be appreciated.

If you want to be able to install an AOSP or CM or similar Roms you sure gonna have a bad time with the LG G4 cause the variants that can be unlocked are the H815 from the european market, hence the variable that are sell in the US ares as you mention the H811 that can't be unlcoked or the H815P wich can't be unlocked either, if you can afford a nexus i'll go with the nexus (I'm planning in upgrading to the nexus 6P for the same reason i own a LG G4 and i'm very dissapointed with the develop of the phone) since i come from the LG G3 that phone although it has a very limited amount of roms at the time it's now a little biger but nothing compare with any nexus... so for resume I'll go Nexus>LG G3>LG G4

The H811 is unlocked, which is the only reason I was considering it. The rest of the US carrier G4's are locked and have basically no development going on. I prefer the idea of the nexus just based on software and support being that it's a Google phone, and it's going to be guaranteed updates for quite a while, I just am concerned that since I cannot see any of the nexus phones in person currently (Besides the original Nexus 6 which are in some stores) the only way I'd have to see the phone is to buy it, play with it, then return it if I dislike it, which I prefer not to deal with. The newer Nexus phones aren't in stores here in the US besides one store Best Buy which is just getting them, but I was told today that they likely wouldn't get a display model, just boxed up ones to sell.
I'm probably over thinking the fact that I need a removable battery or memory card. It's just nice to not have to worry about not having it.

I have h811 and we will have the same roms available to unlocked h815 variants as soon as T-Mobile updates us to marshmallow...cm13 is going to be available to h811 as soon as we get the bootstack that will come with the update...also we have a few great kernel devs that will more than likely release an h811 version with that release

That's what I was asking about... Why do they need T-Mobile to release an update? I mean obviously it's easier if they do, but is it required or is it just majorly helpful? I'm asking because my current phone this whole "bootstack" stuff was never needed for developers to release updates. I'm just looking for that clarification to make sure that there's not some new requirement with this device that I'm not used to seeing that would make it unlikely to see development in the future, say if LG or T-Mobile decided to not update to the next version of Android after Marshmallow, if we'd be stuck on Marshmallow, or if the development could keep going like it did on the phone I currently have, where the manufacturer stopped development on Kitkat, but people are still releasing even current marshmallow builds.
I would not buy the G4 again.

Locked bootloaders. Rooting requires rooting a system image and flashing the entire 3.5gb image. LG has closed this loophole in the V10. So I think our days are limited. No custom roms, custom recovery, or much community support.
I love the phone itself and thankfully the stock roms are great but once updates cease, the device will be stuck.
I would pick a LG Nexus 6 or the Hauwei Nexus. I've honestly thought about going with Hauwei but the 6" screen is tablet territory IMO and too big for 1 handed operation. The 5.2" LG Nexus would be a better fit.

Okay, if that's the reason why the v10 doesn't have any real development going on, that would make sense. I wasn't aware that that was a requirement. Figured it was just that there wasn't enough knowledgeable people working on it yet.
I got a clarification from a friend as to the bootloader question... I guess normally an updated bootloader has been needed moving from 5.x to 6.x, which doesn't appear to have been needed with the GS3 I have... I guess people must have rigged something, because updating the bootloader was never a step with that. He has a Nexus 5 (the orig one) and said he's had to flash a boot loader several times for this reason.
i'm too lazy to read all of this, but i was planing a long period of time to buy the G4, but i found some hardware cons and problems in it as a result of my deep search on youtube , gsmarena users reviews, xda forums and more.
The one problem that made me decide not to buy it and not to think about it any more is the self-die / bootloop hardware problem. read about it on xda bro. Adding this big possibility to the other cons (hardware + some software complexity) made this deal very risky as it will be my second device within less than a year.
i don't know if i'm right and made a good decision, i was believe in this device and i love it ..

So..... can I have the US unlocked LG710ULM, or one of the other models, fully working** on Verizon, rooted with recovery?

In all fairness youre asking about a phone thats been released 3 days in the wild [emoji4]
LG makes it fairly clear the phone supports all bands in one device. Although not Verizon, I have full services running on ATT with VoLTE, WiFiCalling, HDVoice and VVM. Unlike my previous HTC devices where we had to spoof imei's to activate services, this one turned on like butter. Since VZW carries a G7, the ULM IMEI should activate all features on your plan.
We do not currently have bootloader unlocking on the ULM (yet), nor do we have TWRP for this version. There are not KDZ files to crossflash for this version that i know of.
As for root, oddly for myself its not as urgent as previous devices. The blaotware is almost non-existent and aside ad blocking and a few more convenient features, there isnt a mission critical need for me on this handset.
Ive not owned an LG before, looooonnnnggg time HTC guy. To me, this device is a much more refined user experience than HTC sense. A lot of things i would have rooted to fix dont need it on the G7. Honestly im a bit shocked. I dont like vanilla android but this LG UI is pretty good. Few sense features i miss like secure messaging, but i can totally live without them. The G7 hardware design is more thought through than HTC, its a remarkable, unremarkable phone. Oh and the display has to be the best LCD ive ever used IRL. 15w fast wireless charging is also a bonus.
TLR - very impressed with the phone. Full carrier services on ATT. UI is better than others. Too soon for root but hopeful for sometime in the near future.
Unless your use case absolutely requires root now, get the phone. I was hesitant but this has turned out to be the best phone ive ever owned.

The phone was released in early June but the ULM model didn't start shipping to anyone until July 11th, hence a couple of days. It has only been physically available for 3 days. Devs cant root what isnt available [emoji4]

Dude, thank you so much for this. I’ve been killing myself over buying this phone for a while now. I always root my phone to only: remove in app ads and from YouTube and remove useless bloatware. That’s literally why I’ve always rooted my phones. But now, this cleared it out a little. T-Mobile currently has a deal of get one and get the other one free. I’m gonna get two of them lol

BTW dns66 is a non root vpn app from fdroid that allows you to encrypt and choose your own dns server as well as ad blocking servers (because its rerouting only dns requests).
It is a lifesaver for adblocking and dns privacy. No root needed.
I went with substratum/andromedia/paid theme to clean up the LG look. Macrodroid with adb hack has given me back most of my automation. 3c toolbox allows me to backup apps/data without root but im sure there are other methods.

I’m getting those two phones TODAY. I’ve been using an iPhone and I’m about to have brain cancer. Finally pulling the trigger.
I'm also unfortunately stuck with Verizon as a carrier (work phone). I've been lucky to unlock all of my devices up to this point, but the current crop of phones it doesn't seem promising at all. I'm certainly not a flash-a-holic, but i do prefer to run custom roms and have full control over my device.
Came across this thread while doing research on the current offerings from Verizon and so far your post @datafoo is the most convincing to switch. I too have been an HTC guy for a while. I love my 10 running LeeDroid but the battery is finally starting to go. It's been a great work horse for the last 2 years though.
Just wanted to post and say thank you guys for your opinions on this phone. I'm going to poke around a bit more, but i think I'll be pulling the trigger later today. Really hope we do get unlocked boot loader at some point!!!

Although I paid too much as an early adopter, the ULM unlocked version is on sale everywhere it seems, I don't regret it at all.
Feel free to hit me up, I'm a little slow to respond at times simply due to workload but i'll respond as time permits.

I felt like I needed to root my HTCs. I still don't feel a hard need to do it on this device. I would really like to see the unlocked bootloader and magisk on here but it's just not as mission critical on this version. Carrier models may have more bloatware and need it more but the ULM is pretty trim as it is.
I do like the stability of a non-rooted phone. No random reboots, predictable battery life. Get the ULM version as it should have all the bands for VZW and most all the bands for everyone else in case you switched carriers.
I'm still really happy with mine. The most remarkable, unremarkable phone I've ever owned.
I'm guessing no change yet, and not rootable, still?
