Nexus 5x dying, what can I do? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lately my phone is giving up. Camera doesn't work, phone app crashes, it's slow, etc.
It's stock with Franco kernel. Previously I tried just going stock everything, but still everything is slow.
What can I do to speed things up?

@Bei60, suggestion: save your data, flash actual Google-image (all new), TWRP, ABC without GApps. If it's still slow in this lite Vanilla-state, hardware is dying and time to say goodbye.

without gapps? will I still be able to install google apps from the playstore though?
also, how can I trust this release with only 30 downloads on some thread not even in this forum. just curious and being cautious, thanks

@Bei60: I use ABC since 1y and am happy with this clean&stable Vanilla. My link leads to the latest build, the regular ones you find here. If you don't trust, take another AOSP-ROM. GApps you can add later, if performance is satisfying.

I have to use gapps. I installed ABC and downloaded gapps from here: https://opengapps.org/ but now the play services crash every few seconds... any ideas?

@Bei60: dev recommends Beans GApps Mini. No idea about that, don't need GApps.

Jandycane previous version question, or jb-kfire

Hi all.
I just installed Jandycane 1.7.2 on my KF and it's gorgeous, smooth well done praise/praise/praise. I'd like to get Chrome up and running (a large reason for jellybean on this device). It's known to not function - and I tested again on latest version (see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811376)
That thread recommends two fixes - 1: uninstall Chrome, wipe dalvik and cache, revert to a previous version of jandycane, install chrome, re-flash latest version. This seems to be the easiest fix, but the links in ROM OP of Jandycane http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766829 are all dead (Apparently I'm lucky I got it about 4 hours ago), because goo.im seems to be DOA right now for pretty much everything).
So in regard Fix 1 - does anyone have a hosted copy of Jandycane 1.6 or thereabouts that they can host somewhere until goo.im settles down in a few days?
Regarding that thread's other fix, which itself is referencing a post in the ROM's OT: 2: wipe/wipe/wipe, flash jb-kfire-hashcode-07-13, flash gapps, wipe caches again, install Chrome, dirty-flash Jandycane 1.7.1 (assuming works for 1.7.2).
In regard Fix 2 - I also can't find jb-kfire-hashcode-07-13 anywhere, does anyone have a hosted version of this, a version they can host, etc?
Thanks.
Yes replying to myself. I've been a *LONG* time lurker... need my 10.

Let me start off by saying, don't hate on me for replying to myself - yes it's for 10count. But I've been lurking here about 2 years and while I haven't found a need to post much, I do now, between a new Nexus 7, and old Huawei Ascend2, 2x Kindle Fires, and probably soon to be a second Nexus, I have questions damnit!
Now on to the jbkfire-hashcode-07-13 : It was originally posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765288 and the link leads to droidhive.com which is showing as a dead GoDaddy site. So... yeah.
Is the whole community being effed with when I need them most? Droidhive and goo.im down at the same time, mediafire and dropbox thresholding downloads or simply freezing accounts for 72 hours over traffic, blah.
Some help would be appreciated so I can get the KFs running well for the wife and kids, and I can go back to playing with my Nexus 7.
Thanks.

Gapps notworking
Hey Guys,
thanks for the great work. Keep it up! I've installed it and it's working like a charm.
However, I cannot get gapps working. I flashed the gapps from your link, but there is no play store or any possibility to sign up with my google account.
I've also tried flashing gapps-510-base-20150422-2-signed from androidhost. Same negative results.
Any suggestions?

Yes, I also tried flashing multiple gapps versions, it looks like android doesn't detect the new apps...
Works!
It works and looks really awesome. Is it only my feeling or is CM11 a bit faster than CM12 on PRIMOU?
No Gapps
After looking further into the iddue of no gapps showing I found an article stating that it might be a twrp related problem. However, flashing CWM and installing the rom and gapps anew also brought no results.
Yet, the application manager shows that gapps are installed. They just aren't showing.
Maybe one needs to force start playstore etc via terminal??

Google Play Services missing?
Works great, but Google Play Services seems to be missing so you can't really do anything with it yet (no Play Store or anything). When can we expect a build with gapps services?
Awfully slow with gapps
While the Rom works fine and smooth on its own, it becomes unbearably slow after installing gapps. In fact, I couldn't even finish the cm start assistant because the phone was too slow.
Anyone experiencing the same? found a solution?

Sorry, but the phone is just very slow and was never designed to run lollipop, overclock your cpu to 1600mHz and it will be better.
Performance will get better in the next builds, especially when the low_ram prop is usable.
Sorry, I may be missing something, but I have flashed GApps as soon as I have flashed the ROM. There are apps like GMail, Play Music, Play Games and others but no Google Play or Google Play services. The Google account setup wizard didn't appear on first launch either.
I have tried re-flashing for a couple of times now, sorry if I'm wasting your time if I'm missing something obvious here.

Help a novice please - have ROOTED Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 (SM-T320) - Update?

I just received a used Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 (SM-T320) - and discovered (not known to me before purchase) it is Rooted.
When I went to do an Update via standard Settings>about Device - it refused returning tablet modified.
also it had the App SuperSU (free) installed) which asked about permission on a couple of Apps I used.
I have absolutely no experience of Rooted tablets,
and currently have no idea how the tablet was rooted, and what with.
So I am seeking your patience and some advice about this, please.
Is there a way to return to the Stock installation?
If so, how to I check that this is possible?
Or should I keep the Root?
If so, how do I update the tablet?
eg: how do I check what, or if any, custom ROM has been installed?
or
which custom ROM do people advise I install?
Thanks for any advice.
Vincent
Just back up your valuable data and storage contents and flash stock via Odin. And I believe at this time point the updates are not of much importance, so if you're on KitKat you might as well ignore that if you can't spare time for backups.

Thanks for the reply.
Funny that was starting to be my take too.
Either leave it rooted as is - since it really is just KitKat 4.4.2 - but with more ability.
Or later when the spirit moves perhaps upgrade via a custom rom.
Thank you.

@vincent. I have the same tablet as you and I prefer to run the latest OS which is Marshmallow. As you state you are already rooted so you might as well try out a custom ROM. I recommend Resurrection Remix ROM by Vasumit and the XDA thread can be found here. Latest update to ROM is here. You will also need to install gapps. I recommend Banks Dynamic Gapps 6.X.X found here. Give it a try, I'm sure you will like it. ROM is buttery smooth and Vasumit updates it often. :good::good:

Thank you so much for your encouragement and suggestion.
Even though I have used Android on tablets and phones for years -
I am still a n00b when it comes to Root and Custom ROMs
I have heard of the more famous ROMs like CyanogenMod etc -
what makes Resurrection Remix ROM by Vasumit better than CyanogenMod
in terms of features and/or support please?
How easy (or not) are custom ROMs to undo?
Many thanks,

Personal opinion below: most AOSP-based ROMs have equal or slightly better support than CM because the team behind them is much smaller, but they might die out one day because of the same reason. CM maintains a huge number of devices and is the basis of many, so it's not likely to disappear soon. Also, CM is usually among the quickest to get to a new Android version while others usually sync from CM and start from there.
As of features, others are guaranteed to have more than CM. CM doesn't like adding features these days.

Do: Flash TWRP, make a full backup of your stock ROM, full wipe and flash the new one.
Undo: Full wipe and restore the old backup, or if you decide you don't want your data, use Odin.

Hey!
you could look at it this way, most of the people here have a hard time just ulocking the device and rooting it, not that yours is already done, might as well right. along with the proper research, your device could be one hundred times better, the stock OS of the tablet isn't that good (lets face it.) and with the current technology, it will have a hard time keeping up because the OS for this device is not that efficient (personal opinion). Anyways, it's still up to you to do it or not. Cyanogenmod has released the nightly version of Marshmallow 6.0 for this device. maybe you could check it out!! ^_^

Yes, thanks for the encouragement.
Seems ironic that I had done lots of look-sees (not quite research, but close) about rooting devices - and I actually now have one
(it was just unexpected on this Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 (SM-T320)).
As you see I've decided to keep it rooted and am actively looking at which ROM to flash -
currently I am leaning toward the more conservative approach of doing the CM (CyanogenMod)
and rather than deciding between the snapshot CM-12.1 or the nightly CM-13.0....
perhaps I should just wait for a snapshot CM-13.0
(" and we’ll have a quality approved SNAPSHOT for CM13 sometime Jan." of course it is now Feb - so maybe soon?)
Thanks,

Don't wait for snapshots - they are just forked from nightlies at a certain timepoint and aren't more stable than nightlies. Just backup and flash a nightly, and if anything you feel unstable, restore the backup and/or wait for that to get resolved. I personally don't see anything disturbing aside from wonky external SD support (which is a universal bug across all 6.0+ ROMs).
P.S. The "Thanks" button is there - use it

The issue is mainly with how to use SD card as external storage (as on older Android versions), not with the new "adoptable storage" feature. That we don't have a definitive solution yet.
You might want to read through the last pages of the CM13 discussion thread in Development subforum if you're determined to get it working.

I've been doing my best to get my own build running for a few weeks now, and while everything else seems to work perfectly, I can't seem to figure out a way to get it to connect to mobile data. I'd be really interested to hear if there's something in addition to the build instructions provided by Google that you had to do to get it working!
I would just use your build, but my goal is to avoid gapps altogether. Hopefully the trick isn't to have gapps installed

Now, I'm relatively new to the rooting world of Android. Is AOSP essentially custom ROMs? I know this is sort of a "if you don't know, you likely shouldn't be messing with it." I just love tweaking my phone!

for u id say hold off.. it works fine for me but it technically is a userdebug build.. AOSP =Android Open Source Project, Its basically Android built from Android source so typically devs can pull the source and make their own roms how they want them. Normally doesnt even have google apps like play store for example.
Its a very clean low lvl android OS and the dev controls every aspect of the build process.. its also been called Vanilla
this technically is "custom" but this initial build doesnt have many tweaks or customizations.. its merely a glimpse as to the possibilities
but hey, try it out if u got the itch, it wont hurt u lol plus the only real way to know the difference is to try it for yourself

Honestly, I'd normally listen and hold off. But since I have a day off I think I'm gonna attempt it just for the sake of learning!
As long as it has the Play Store so I can download the apps I want, I'm good. If I can get all the apps I need to than I'll be a happy camper.
Say later on it's decided I want to go to another AOSP rom, am I going to have to wipe again? If I can get all my apps, won't have to wipe my device every other week, and can get my modules installed I should be good to do some good old fashioned experimentation.
I am not a smart man, at times. I'm gonna try it out. I have a few hours before anyone else is awake. Might as well use that time (un)wisely.
Plus I believe these "vanilla" ROMs, being what they are, can be modded to an even greater extent than the already pretty modifiable "stock" Pixel ones. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks!

I found this:
https://github.com/anestisb/android-prepare-vendor
I submitted my changes and they will update in a few days to the add tamien support.
I am going to hold off on this for now, as it's just a shell of what custom Android can be but just wanted to say thank you very much for getting the ball rolling. For giving us hope haha. I check the thread at least 4 times a day and my heart jumped when I saw this post! Good work!
Nice can we flash the Kernels that have been around here for a while on this rom?

@deeproot
have you uploaded your WIP android_prepare_vendor anywhere? I would like to clone your changed repo and run this script if possible.
I attempted to manually add your changes in the pull request, but the script is breaking with a debugfs error
Thanks,
Edit: Found it, still getting same debugfs error.

Question Best A13 ROM for Mi 11x

I tried Pixel experience but it was giving me issues. Currently on PixelOS and it is working fine. I have not tried any other ROM as it is hassle to backup, restore and then entering password of apps.... Not sure, but perhaps most of the ROMs does not come with Gcam or ANX. So which is the best A13 ROM for Mi 11x with a working ANX or Gcam?

I run the AMAZING Evo-X 7.4 rom, its solid as a rock and works brilliant for me.
I would suggest to check out the Evo-X thread, you might even find me on there
Now the Pain with switching rom is having to re-install all you apps and loosing their data,
as far as i aware there is no A12/A13 Recovery that backs up the complete phone like the Clockwordmod days.
I use a great program called Migrate-GPE it comes in three parts and is FREE, its available on the App store but i have uploaded the version i use, you need to be ROOTED to use this app.
Migrate-GPE saves most of your apps including their data, excluding Banking and Magisk apps,
I love it as it save all my offline maps, battery stats, ect.
Have fun.

Thanks for your suggestion. Yes, I came across EvoX and yes, also migrate GPE. Will try after listening to more suggestions
I also tried Evolution-X, but it has a major drawback. If you go back to MIUI it gives you the "find device storage corrupted" error. Also makes your device uncertified. I eventually fixed both these but it was a massive pain.

Apparently it does but "find device storage corrupted" error it`s a easy fix as long as you have Twrp Recovery,
As for "Device Uncertified" i might flash MIUI Stock to see if i encounter this issue before return back to EVO-X.
I feel there is no advantage returning to stock due to firmware limitations,
if and when your device needs warranty repair, sending it in with non Miui Firmware installed shouldn`t affect your claim.

Wish I knew that. Can you explain how it's done? I tried flashing persist using twrp but that didn't fix it in my case.
I went back to miui because I was experiencing battery drain on Evo-X. And maybe it's just me but my eyes felt strained on Evo-X for some reason.

Hi,
You could check out my post, it worked for me:
Could someone send a dump of persist partition?
I have the error device is not certified with locked bootloader after reflashing the persist partition when it was corrupted (I took persist.img file from fastboot rom). I think that a dump of persist partition from the other poco f3 may solve...
forum.xda-developers.com
With TWRP/OF Recovery installed download and install TWRP Recovery 3.6.2 12 POCOF3 v6.3 A12-alioth-skkk from recovery,
download and unzip find device storage corrupted your device is unsafe now please note this is for EEA Firmware only.
In TWRP Recovery tap on the "New Persist image from Original Rom" folder and then open Persist.img folder and then from TWRP tap Install Image, select Persist.img and then tap the Persist.img checkbox in TWRP and swipe right,
Reboot,
Job done
I WAS PREVIOUSLY RUNNING EVO-X V7.4,
AS A TEST I JUST INSTALLED STOCK
"Alioth_eea_V12.5.6.0.RKHEUXM_07-09-2021.FASTBOOT-11.0" FIRMWARE OVER THE TOP
AND I DIDN`T GET THE "find device storage corrupted" POP UP

Well i actually switched to crDROID for about a week, while using crDROID and replying to posts on XDA a user pointed out the "Device Storage" issue and portioned the blame at the Evo-X rom, as a test i downgraded from crDROID back to stock "eea_V12.5.6.0.RKHEUXM" firmware and yes i received the "NAG SCREEN"
Using the above method I installed a new Persist.img and the nag screen disappeared.
As their was a rumor still going around blaming Evo-X,
again as a test i downgraded to "eea_V12.5.6.0.RKHEUXM" over the top of Evo-X V7.4 that i`ve been using for a week and the nag screen wasn`t present ,
I the Evo-X rom its AMAZING

1. Does it support turbo charging?
2. How is overall battery life?
3. Which cam application does it use? Basic or something like Gcam or MIUI stock ones?
4. What other issues you have come across?
Thanks
Hi,
1. Fast charging works great, but then i use a QI wireless charging adaptor, check out my post on the Poco F3 thread.
2. My phone last me around 9 hours, as i`m not a massive phone user,
I charge my phone from 45% to 65%, this give me enough charge for a day and generates 0.02 cycles of battery wear, the amazing Evo-X rom has the "Smart Charging" function.
3. Not to Shure about the stock camera as i have three different apps running,
it think it`s org.lineageos.aperture Version code 33.
4. When starting from a clean install Every thing works great, I haven't encountered any FORCE CLOSE issues
5. THIS ROM IS AMAZING, IF IN DOUBT CHECKOUT OUT THE OFFICAL TELEGRAM PAGE,
EVO-X SIMPLY AMAZING

I`ve been playing/experimenting with customs roms for over 10 years starting with the HTC Wildfire, i then moved on to the early Samsungs Pre KNOX and then on to LG phones, i still have my LG G7.
I have seen the evolution of Android over the years and it`s been mind blowing and the quality of Custom rom`s and their Dev`s is outstanding.
I choose to upgraded my G7 as LG unfortunately left the smartphone market and custom roms were getting scarce, so i settled on the F3 because it was easy to unlock, had Great specs and dev support, also being one of the most popular xiaomi phones on XDA helps and it was great value for money.
I have run maybe 6 major roms as my daily driver over the last 13 months that I have owned the F3, I have also tested maybe another 10 - 15 roms out of curiosity.
I have found that EVO-X is the most polished rom that i have come across with all the major feature that most users need and i like to give credit when credit it`s due.
EVO-X 7.4 Simply Amazing

Do u by any chance know of MIUI13 ROM which allow smart unlock feature? I know through custoMIUIzation module i can do it, but i was just wondering if someone has optimized MIUI13 for Mi11x with such features unblocked to save the hassle.
I have installed EVO-X and it is good. But i miss "Themes" feature of MIUI which changes over all skin of the phone with so many options to search for. What i like the most that it changes wallpapers, icon, system setting, lockscreen, colors etc in one go. I tried to find an alternative app and even tried installing MIUI's theme module but to no avail. TBH i am only missing that feature.
bliss Rom allows it, I am on 16.2 build and it's perfect for me. My favorite rom in general is crdroid, but last version of bliss Rom hits all my criterias (hbm, power toggle for torch, really smooth and good battery backup...). It is a pity it lacks visibility here
