bricked phones that can't boot to fastboot screen... - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

I am wondering if some of these are not stuck in a power-on state.
Thus they would drain battery to zero but not necessarily reset.
Thus any testing would need a good wall wart or good cable connecting to phone to computer (lots of probs possible in there).
I guess testing would involve hold down pwr button and vol-dn button for 20 secs.
However, if all that does nothing I would be inclined to grab a heat gun and a youtube teardown video and take it apart looking for loose connections (low probability of that) and disconnect the battery and:
(this is just one possible example - I haven't watched it all the way through.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3R8Y8Sl_-8
1 press and hold PWR button a bunch of times to drain caps and try for a reset.
2 Also while you've got it disconnected, test battery with voltmeter. That is extremely delicate as the contacts are tiny - we're talking near surgical here. If you short the battery, it will explode.
Just scratching my brain here. I understand how frustrating it is to have a perfectly good phone that you can't seem to do anything with.

For folks in this situation, plug phone to computer and hold pwr and vol-dn -
1 does computer recognize phone?
2 fastboot devices - work?

[Q] Turned it off...Won't turn back on.

I did a soft shutdown and now it won't turn on. No response to Vol UP + Vol DOWN + Power. Nothing but black. Its connected to power and was at 80% when I shutdown. USB debugging was enabled. Any hints? Thanks, -RP

Ugh, I had to hold power button for 30 seconds. Its really excessive. Delete this please. Thanks.
funny thing is the old nexus 7 had the same issues
I received mine today and it wouldn't turn on at all. All I got was a flashing white light after holding the button to turn it on so knowing that the same thing was common on the previous generation N7 I tried the 30 second trick with no success so I figured I'd share my experience.
Turns out my battery was at 0% out of the box. It was so dead I had to do the following to actually get it to start charging unfortunately:
1. Open it, I followed the guide @ ifixit: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+7+2nd+Generation+Teardown/16072/1
Note: The plastic bezel surrounding the screen is incredibly soft plastic I just learned. Even using plastic pry tools I ended up leaving marks the plastic, despite being extremely careful.
2. Disconnect the battery (follow the guide above)
3. Press the power button and hold down for 10 seconds, but don't release yet.
4. Using the supplied AC adapter, apply the power and continue holding for another 10 seconds.
5. Reconnect the battery while the AC adapter is plugged inThis should get you to the point where you at least see the battery charge icon on the LCD. I waited another 30 minutes before moving on and powering the device on. I intend to leave it charging to 100% before I do anything else with it.
I remember on some older devices I've had when they got into 0% state, they didn't want to take a charge from a high power charger and I needed to switch to 500ma USB 1.1/2.0 slot on PC and let it sit a while before it would trickle in enough charge to get some life.
After that it would take charge from any source again.

lol - this happened to me too. Except double whammy - as soon as it was charged enough to turn on, it wanted to do the system update and wasn't charged enough to do that. Back to the USB it went!
Well I got my replacement for the one with the dead pixels, it started up fine and I even configured just to check it had no dead pixels. I had to step away for a few minutes and it was off, completely dead. Tried ever variation of tricks and I get nothing, no white LED, no charge indicator, nothing.
I think I'm sending both the replacement and the original back for a refund, this is just unacceptable at this point.
I bought one but returned it after 3-4 days. Mine was fully powered and I would go through the shutdown procedure. The device would power off. Then I tried to turn it back on. It would not work. I held it down for several variations of time: pushed it quickly, help the power button in for 10 sec, 15 sec, 30 sec... I found that when I connected the device to power through the usb the screen would show 100% charge right away. I would then hit the power button and it would turn on fine. I immediately unplugged the device and everything was fine. i powered it down again and repeated this process 2-3 more times before I said the heck with it. Anyone else know of this issue or did I just have some crazy unit?

[Q] Phone wont boot after replacing charger port.

So here's how it went:
I opened the phone, replaced the port (the small boardlike thing)
assembled my phone to try it.
The phone started
Then I put all the screws and sim card But I didnt get signal no matter how long I waited
So I dissassembled it again. I was a bit harsh and broke the "Power" button. (the rubber thing that makes it bounce fell off, and an small metallic circle that probably completes the circuit fell off as well.
(Google "galaxy note 2 charger port" for a picture, cant post external links @[email protected])
Checked everything was plugged properly and tried to start it with the tip of a paper clip to complete the circuit where the power button should be (that small round thing)
Nothing happened so I googled a method to start it without using the powerbutton:
youtube: Gre9qaJyCZw
Basically its to plug the charger, wait for the battery logo to show, unplug, take out the battery and put it back in quickly.
So I assembled the phone again to try that and when I connect it to charge it the screen flashes for half a second (no words no nothing, it just brightens up for a bit) And then the red led that means its charging turns on after a couple of seconds.
After doing the trick, the led turns on blue....then the phone vibrates a bit(seems its starting up, but with no sound or nothing in the screen)
And then the "menu" soft key blinks a couple of times and then back to nothing
So I just have no idea what to do @[email protected] I dont mind replacing the button but I would rather not spend on it if there's something else wrong with the phone...any ideas?
And I just bought this to replace another phone that broke ;_;
EDIT::::::
I replaced the charger port for the old one and tried the starting trick. but to the same result: after doing the trick, the led turns on blue....then the phone vibrates a bit(seems its starting up, but with no sound or nothing in the screen)

you probably messed up the mainboard or some connections.
Try to power it on with microusb board disconnected.
Make sure every single connection to the main board is connected properly

Any suggestion as to how I can start the phone with the power button broken and without the microusb board?
I already checked all the connections that you can see when replacing the microusb board (the back side of the motherboard) Is there connections worth checking in the front?
Do those symptoms sound familiar for any specific problems? (Like non working screen or motherboard)
- Charging takes a couple of seconds to turn on the red led when connected but shows nothing on the screen.
- Trying to start it with taking out the battery trick makes the led turn blue, then the phone vibrates a bit, then the menu soft key flashes a couple of times.
Update: I found 2 more symptoms
1° Kept restarting the phone with the battery trick, and a couple of times I could hear the music of the phone starting up, but it seems to be at random or due to some factor I have not spotted yet
2° If I connect it to the computer it detects the phone and lets me access the files. Kies detects it as well
If phone can be accessed through kies I think you have broken some connection between logic board.
Power button and volume + - buttons should have the same round metal part, which will work after swapping.
I think you should give up, maybe there is still hope for repair.

Thats the weird thing. if you take a look at that phone's board, the only things that are within "breakable" range when you open it with a plastic tool are:
power button
charger port
earphones port
volume buttons
And they all seem fine except for the power button. there's no other flexors or anything even remotely close to where the tool was used. (and where I got a bit rough)

Nexus 7 Gen 2 won't turn on

Okay, here's the story. My Nexus 7 Gen 2 went into the water for half an instant. However, when I tried to turn it off immediately, it wouldn't turn off. I put it in a container of rice for a couple of days and eventually, it turned off - the battery died, I'm sure. Anyway, now, when I plug in the charger, I get the battery charging symbol, however, it will still not turn on. I've tried some of the button combos mentioned (hold power for 30 seconds, hold power and volume up for 3-5 seconds, hold power and volume down for 15 seconds, even hold power for 2 minutes), yet nothing seems to work. But as soon as I unplug it and plug it back in the charge symbol appears. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Chris
Okay, read some more on here and got it into boot load mode. Pressing the up arrow puts the start arrow at the top of the screen pointing to the power button, the down arrow "restart bootloader", however, pressing the power button does nothing.
Info on screen:

Product name - flo
variant - flo 16g
hw version - rev_e
bootloader version - flo-04.06
carrier info - none
serial number - 0af16079

If you put the tab in the rice container without removing the back, you don't know if all the moisture that seeped in has been removed. You need to disassemble the thing, dry each and every component inside with a blow dryer ( both sides of the electronic boards) to make sure of that. Thereafter, you can try again. Because even if you succeed in flashing the OS anew, you'll never know when the residual moisture will interfere or affect the components again.

I didn't use a blowdryer, but it sat out on a table with the back off for about 24 hours and I do live in southern Colorado in the high desert, so humidity isn't a huge factor. I may give that a try today, though. Thanks.

I'm afraid some corrosion has set in already and it may not be reliable anymore.
Next time, you should immediately disassemble it and disconnect the battery, then use a hairdrier to remove the moisture ASAP.

So, given that it will open into the reboot screen and the volumen buttons seem to work but the power button itself doesn't work, could it be possible to replace the power and volume buttons and get it to restart? Just wondering if I can manage to salvage this thing.

Yes, try to replace or test with multimeter the control buttons assembly first but if it does not help then remove the motherboard and its shields, and check it for any visible signs of corrosion. Scratching off a conductive corrosion layer may fix it.

Seemingly Bricked Tablet Showing Slight Signs Of Life

So I'm trying to help a friend out who's on a pretty fixed income with his bricked Note 8 LTE that follows the same pattern as all the other millions of users have experienced - tablet was on charge, went dead when they returned to it a few hours later. Started with the obvious - swapped the charging port, swapped the battery, tested a plethora of cables and chargers and no luck at all. No lights, no attempt at bootloop or even attempts to boot - nothing.
Here's where my version of things differ though; I have a USB power meter that can read the current levels and draw of whatever as long as it's USB. When I initially hook it up between the tablet and the charger, it reads zero draw at all BUT if I press any of the hardware buttons on the side (so Volume Up, Down, and Power) suddenly there's a tiny bit of power draw from the charger to the tablet which would imply something is alive in there. I've even gone so far as to use a rubber band to hold the power button down and leave it on the charger for a solid 8 hours .
Still no signs of life.
Since I'm at my wits end with this device and have thrown everything I've got at it, I figured I'd reach out to the community for help having noticed this quirky power draw.
Any ideas, anyone?
PS: There was never even so much as sideloaded app on this tablet prior to bricking - completely stock.

Random reboot hard bricked my Robin

May be unrelated but updated to the latest nightly of Lineage, ran into the camera issues and got some random reboots. Sent an email, and then put it in my pocket, pulled it out a few minutes later and it wouldn't turn on. Have done the hold down power and volume down button to no avail. Used the USB cable to hook it to the laptop, see it in QDLoader 9008 mode. If I hold down the power button and the volume down button I can see it disconnect and reconnect but it never turns on or shows anything on the screen.
Spent a few hours googling it and looks like you need some hardware specific files to the QFIL method, which I can't find. So is this device toast? Was really enjoying the device and so sad that it died after only using it for about 1.5 months.
**UPDATE**
So the leave it plugged in to the laptop overnight trick didn't work. So I took the phone a part, when it's in this mode it seems like there is is still power to system. I left it open until the battery died, and the regulation circuit cut power. Then plugged it in the laptop(although a charger would probably work). Let it charge for 10min and it came back. Seems like it get stuck somewhere in the boot and needs to be reset, but without a removable battery you can't cut power. So if anyone runs across.this, leave it disconnected overnight(or maybe longer) until what ever state it is in kills the battery. Then plug it in and it may come back. My booted after being plugged in for 10min and turning it on using the power button
So I have the same problem with my device and am thinking about doing the same thing. What tools do I need in order to perform this?
I also have the same problem, is there any help?

So this worked for your hard bricked phone? And you had no more issues after?
