I'm guessing probably not but I pray that I'm wrong.

As of right now. No public root instructions or installs. LG recently released the unlocked variant bootloader unlock but not for the Tmobile version yet. Once and if that comes out, root will soon follow. I've read about some exploits which hopefully someone can test and develop on it. So fingers crossed it'll be soon but as of right now nope.
Anything ever happen with this? I'm on t-mobile variant and hoping for root sooner or later.

Can you go and try unlocking the bootloader? If you can I can try compiling a boot image from the LG open source and apply root to it.
There is absolutely no difference between the source code of the international version and the T-Mobile one in terms of the Kernel. That could mean that (maybe) it's possible to boot the international version of the boot image on a T-Mobile one however I'm still not sure if it's possible to unlock one and maybe try. If anyone is willing to try unlocking it please share a pic of the phone in bootloader mode.
My phone allows for unlock_critical but not regular unlock. Unlock_critical allows bootloader flashing. And when you unlock_critical it wipes your phone like a normal unlock would. I'm wondering if the could be an in for a full unlock??
As far as I know the only place where we can get the bootloader is from the kdz firmware but there is still no tool that can extract our version.
EDIT: try using kngoroot. It claims that it can root Android 8 devices. If you succeed you can then switch to magisk.
Tried previously and no luck sadly.

If you really want to get root you can try using LGUP with the international kdz file but it has a chance to break the phone (but as far as I know there is no different in the kernel of the T-Mobile and the international version). In THEORY if something bad happens after flashing the phone it should boot directly to download mode. If not just cross your fingers and hold the volume up button. Still this is very risky and it has a chance to completely break the phone.
Yeah I may give it a shot once I have all the appropriate files and such. I'm not too worried about bricking it, it's insured and I have 2 Pixel 2 XLs as back up phones lol

Nothing like Kingroot or Kingo root or any other alleged "magical" 1-click solution is ever going to work on newer LG smartphones.
We have root for ALL the LG V30/V30+/V30S on the planet due to exploits we found and wrote guides for.
Just yesterday a dev finally got root for T-mobile H932, so now ALL V30 and variants have root. (Different process for H932).
ROOT FOR T-MOBILE H932 V30/V30+
ROOT FOR ALL OTHER V30/V30+/V30S
Maybe someone can try unlocking it using the exploit?

Respected active V30 user, used to read all of your XDA posts on the amazing LG V30, been wondering the previous LG flagships upto LG G6 USA unlocked (US997) have unlocked bootloader, where as LG V30 (US998) & LG G7 (G710ULM) didn't get supported by LG? Are they officially stopped getting bootloader unlock except the EU variants? Do we hope something (custom kernel, ROMS etc) for them? Been waiting for my beast G710ULM! I hope some exploit like WTF method happens to the LG G7.

Yeah, it's frustrating the LG has apparently stopped giving official bootloader unlock (with fastboot flash commands) to North America variants.
We got "open market" US998 v30 official bootloader unlock code by hacking the website... LG had put in the IMEI before never announcing official recognition, but we could not get that trick to work with the open market US9988 30+, even though Europe had both v30 in v30+ models officially recognized.
So one of my us998 phones did have semi-official bootloader unlock from LG (available but never officially announced), but the others (V30+) luckily have access to WTF. I also bought two LS998 v30 plus off eBay and quickly converted those two US998 V30+ for bootloader unlock and root.
@runningnak3d is going to start working on the G7. His process is more complicated than the WTF method but it works. I'm not saying it would definitely work on the G7 but that's one of his next projects.

I hope LG is reading XDA, also they even set up "Software Update Center" to speed up updates, or are they busy with the "hyped" LG V40?
To make the H932 root happen, a user loaned me their phone. Unfortunately, it looks like the same thing is going to have to happen with the G7. I looked on eBay and thought about buying one to do the dev work, but even ones that have a bad IMEI, or cracked (but usable) screen are still $600+ and I am not going to spend that to root a phone that I don't own -- sorry

My G4 was sold to me as "unlocked". There was no mention of US Cellular and the battery door nor boot screen shows any US Cellular logo. Model number is LGUS991 and software version is us99111a. To my understanding this is not the US Cellular model, but rather an unlocked model different from the US Cellular one. Upon emailing LG about why I can't receive an ota update for MM they told me its because I am not using US Cellular service which got me thinking that maybe this is the US Cellular phone. A Google search just yieleded me a result about root that said "LG G4 carrier models can now be unlocked like the unlocked model"......I could've sworn with all my reading that the damned unlocked model was the one that had trouble being rooted yet searching google it appears to be the other way around as if the unlocked model already had easy root for a while and yet looking around the sub forums here at XDA I see no root method for my model or any roms.
Again I'm pretty sure this is the straight unlocked model I have and NOT the US Cellular one........so WHAT can I do with it? And why would the ota for MM not be appearing? (i don't want it anyway with all the issue people have had but am just wondering). Sorry to make these posts but the info is all over the place. Can't seem to find the correct answers.

Hello carnivalrejectq, were you able to root your phone even I have this same problem with my LG G4 US99121a.
How can I root my phone ?
Negative, you have a Rent a Center G4.
10A = Unbranded G4
10C = US Cellular
11A = Rent A Center
LG is full of **** when they say the updates only come with a SIM card for this phone. The only way to get an update is via WiFi if there is even an update to be had. My unbranded US991LD updated to 21A without a SIM card connected to WiFi even while the morons at LG were telling me otherwise. You can't get an update from USC if it's not even a USC phone!

MM can't be rooted without an unlocked bootloader, so no. There are some possibilities, but I got stuck with the modem not working. I am able to downgrade our phone to 5.1 and root. The process to downgrade and root basically converts our phone to an LS991...but it breaks the modem. There is no TOT file with all required files to completely restore our phone...I'm not willing to send my phone back to LG again.
Caution: DO NOT try this on variants except for LS998 and VS996 unless you know deeply how the partitions work in LG systems.
Basic crossflashing method: Instead of choosing "UPGRADE" In the "process" menu, choose "PARTITION DL",then click "select all", confirm and there you go.
If running into problems in starting the phone, perform a data reset.
Cases: In China, numerous cases of LS998/VS996 successfully flashing US998 or AS998 or H933 and working fine have been confirmed, since second-hand phone dealers crossflash as a common practice for certain reasons. And LTE band 1 and 5 which are not active on LS998/VS996 before flashing are activated in the flashed US998 (the so-called Frankenstein) system. Dual sim also CAN BE recognized on VS996 with flashed H930DS system coz the circuit system seems to be identical among all the variants of V30. However with the baseband difference network is not working.

Sorry for the uneducated questions:
1. This will only work if the bootloader is already unlocked, correct?
2. You mention certain LTE bands become active, but later you say the network is not active due to baseband differences. Can you please clarify what that means for me and other low-tech users?
Thanks for your efforts!

2. Only flashing H930DS on VS996(possibly LS998 as well) results in network problems.

That's interesting! So with this process, I can put an official LG ROM on my H933, with the end result of converting it to a different variant of the V30?
The H933 has not been provided with a bootloader unlock solution by LG, but some other V30 variants have. I am wondering if I could use this process to flash my device from H933 to a variant which has BL unlock available and then go ahead with that. Has that already been ruled out or confirmed possible?

Yes you can convert it, with it seems full functionality. EXCEPT...
No, to the bootloader unlock -- at least on LG Developer Bootloader Unlock list website. That's eligible through IMEI range and they double check Device ID.
LG Developer Bootloader Unlock website then sends you a file you flash that is only good for that particular phone. Basically a custom code to unlock the bootloader with full flash commands available.
Think of it like the US998 or the H930G. Some are eligible for bootloader unlock, like the open market LG US998 or the Italian H939G. But there's plenty out they which are NOT eligible for bootloader unlock, like the U.S.Cellular model US998 or the Israeli H939G.
Just because you have that model doesn't mean LG will unlock the bootloader.

Whatever Frankenstein you change your original phone into, the BL CAN NOT be unlocked unless your IMEI and device id are effective to be used on LG bootloader unlocking page.
Right, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification gents

yes you can do it as you wish.
I flashed my US998 V30+ to the Verizon VS996. It gave me Oreo. Plus a working Verizon voicemail. My wife is no longer cursing me out for missing her voicemails.
I haven't tried going back yet, but I might if LG unlocks the V30+ bootloader.

Does that essentially mean that we all could get root on all other models if the H932 is ever rooted?
This i kind of aimed at Chazz or anyone that understands a bit more in-depth what is contained in the unlock file LG sends out to those on the official unlock list. I'm guessing that the key is IMEI specific. Based on that. Is there some way to make one of those files generic or for some way for a user to take one of those files and change the information in it to the specific IMEI of their device? Before anyone asks. Changing your devices IMEI is a taboo subject here and also more than likely would need root. Chazz has multiple devices. I am wondering if he has tried his unlock bin on his V30+ or tried any methods to alter the bin to work with his V30+.
AT&T LG G8 - Want to flash stock firmware, possible? Trying to use it on Google FI and it seems hotpot and many other features aren't working. Phione is paid in full and unlocked. Factory firmware currently.
I want to flash my phone
So you're trying to flash stock on top of stock?
The request is to see if you can flash a bare LG unlocked ROM that comes with factory unlocked phones onto a phone that came with a stock AT&T ROM. The Att phone has now been carrier unlocked, is used on a different network, so the Att specific apps that replaced stock apps no longer work.
I was also wondering if I could do this with my Tmobile G8; unlock the phone, then flash the unlocked LG OS instead of the Tmobile version. My goal is debloat, and to be able to have the original Android hotspot app. Not to mention get rid of that terrible pink, loud, annoying carrier startup splash.
Also, I wonder if security updates would come faster when strait from LG instead of the carrier.

Unlike Samsung phones where you can flash other firmwares via ODIN I don't think this phone has that ability. If you got to the ROM/Development section there are threads where people posted firmwares but no instructions on how to flash.

We can actually cross flash, but we need a modified lg dll to fool lgup into letting us flash any firmware.

So I've unplugged and reboot the phone. Still working.

Lg Blocked crossflashing , its not possible as of this moment.

We can actually cross flash, but we need a modified lg dll to fool lgup into letting us flash any firmware.

that just means one of the unit was not activated on Sprint (usually once activated Chameleon then kicks in and adds all the sprint stuff or boost depending on the MVNO)
I have all the necessary data and the LG DLL in the LGUP folder to put any ROM released, I have an LG G8 from AT&T, I am not within the United States but I am afraid that by modifying the ROM (KDZ) they will not work for me some things like 4G or some functions inside the phone, to specify live in Latin America, if someone helps me pass the LGUP data through Google Drive

Because the G8 and all newer LG phones have security measures to prevent cross flashing.
Many bloatware apps can be Disabled in App Info Settings. The rest can be removed with ADB shell "pm uninstall". Google it.
It's best to never ever buy carrier devices. There's a reason they're the ones sold with a discount :cyclops:

The Sprint LG g8 is recognized by lgup when it's on leaked beta. It's possible they haven't built in security measures yet, I'm going to try cross flashing
New LM-G820UM (AT&T) purchased from ebay. Using on T-Mobile and have update question
Hi all,
Grabbed a G8 Thinq for my son off ebay (which scared me but it was cheap). It's an AT&T variant but it's working just fine with T-Mobile. However, the security updates are from July and I'd like to update. I tried LG Bridge and get a "cannot check software version" error. Before I send this thing back I wanted to check here. I understand that OTA updates are super slow to arrived when you unlock and switch carriers but will I ever get one? Is there another way to update this thing?
I'm pretty Android savvy but just haven't messed around on here since my Nexus 6P days. Thanks!

There should be newer firmware kdzs that you can download and manually flash using lgup for Att variant just look it up.

Thanks, I'll do some reading on that. Appreciate the look.
Are AT&T KDZs even available? I can't find them anywhere that doesn't look like a complete scam site.

AT&T is known not to release KDZs ever, and to only provide updates to postpaid AT&T customers. I assume that's true with G8 as well. I saw those unlocked AT&T G8 on eBay for $320, but I wouldn't expect any updates, nor would I expect warranty to be honored.

Welp, this baby's going back. Just ordered up a T-Mobile version for only $20 more so "hopefully" it will actually update. Thanks for the guidance.

T-Mobile is pretty good with updates. I have T-Mobile V30 on Red Pocket GSMA (AT&T MVNO) and receive updates.
But T-Mobile phones are very hard to carrier unlock. They can only be unlocked with a T-Mobile Device Unlock app, which queries T-Mobile servers for approval. If the phone is relocked (such as after LG repair, or if you get a warranty replacement) you won't be able to unlock it again unless you're a T-Mobile customer and/or have had the phone on their service for some time (40 days postpaid, 1 year prepaid). It can't be unlocked with a code like other phones.
Like AT&T, Sprint also doesn't release KDZs, but as noted they are less restrictive about OTA updates. T-Mobile and Verizon release KDZs.
Carrier phones generally suck for the same reason that carriers generally suck: Everything they do is always designed to suck you

I faced the precise same situation, I was able to get the updates by moving my # to ATT prepaid.

The T-Mobile V30 has official bootloader unlock, as the only North American carrier model. I believe the same was true with V20: Just Enable OEM Unlock in Developer Settings, boot into fastboot mode (Vol- while inserting cable with phone off) and enter fastboot oem unlock. The problem is the bootloader is neutered, with fastboot flash and fastboot boot commands stripped out. So even after BL unlock fastboot cannot be be used to flash or boot TWRP. But it still relaxes the secure boot chain. So once @runningnak3d found a way to flash TWRP using Download Mode (laf) we were golden.
Of course that laf vulnerability is long since fixed. And I am sure somebody must have already checked if the T-Mobile G8 has official bootloader unlock like earlier LG phones. Right? Or are we just assuming it doesn't because other carrier models don't? I only began following the G8 threads recently, so I wouldn't know.

No g8 has it
So I have my v35 actually going to be discarded, and I decided to buy a cheap G8 from [email protected] and I am confused about the Android 10 update... Some users reported that if the phone is on Pie and skip all the set-up for first time and connect to wifi without any sim card they have upgraded their phones to Android 10, other suggested that they changed the time zone and it worked eventually, others reported that they got a [email protected] sim card and they inserted and after a couple of minutes or hours the update will automatically downloaded.
As someone who live outside US I import my phones because they are way cheap than here in my country and I have enough knowledge of flashing software as I did with my v35 also that was or it is [email protected] But now I see that the Android 10 kdz is on the LG site for flash? As I had to or wanted to install Android 10 on the current v35 as it is unlocked I had to flash the korean version...
My question is if I can flash using LG bridge the current Android 10 kdz or it's not possible on the [email protected]? Or I need to buy the [email protected] sim card or how the heck it's the correct way to upgrade the phone? I have to sim unlock the phone first or should I have to do without sim unlock?

Sorry, there's basically no way to update. You can't cross flash, and at&t doesn't provide kdzs. The only way to is to buy an at&t sim, but you have to activate it, which costs like another $60, and you need to actually connect to at&t, which can be done practically nowhere outside of the us I think
Mmm even with the official page of LG having Android 10 kdz? They are listed as unknown and CAN, and some of them are listed as US too, just wondering if I had to do the same as I did with the v35, which also as being of at&t and unlocked it was never going to receive the Android 10 by ota. I just flashed the korean kdz and it worked and of course it is different.
https://lg-firmwares.com/es/lg-lmg820um-firmwares/
The thing about activating I guess I can't as I am outside USA and by $60 I could anyway it's way cheaper than paying retail prices here for $800

You can't cross flash, end of story. Lg put in new hardware locks against it
Ey pardon for insisting but... T-Mobile and Verizon are way easier to update or it's the same mess as at&t version? Saw a couple of them unlocked one of T-Mobile and the Verizon one seems black listed but for overseas in my case works.

I don't know if they work overseas when they're blacklisted; I wouldn't be too sure of that. Those variants should be fine because t mobile and Verizon provide kdzs, so you can always update manually
Yeah I asked on Reddit and people say T-Mobile updates ota and are on Android 10 and of course they advised me never again buy any at&t variant and even Verizon can update also ota.
