AT&T LG G8 - Want to flash stock firmware, possible? - LG G8 Questions & Answers

AT&T LG G8 - Want to flash stock firmware, possible? Trying to use it on Google FI and it seems hotpot and many other features aren't working. Phione is paid in full and unlocked. Factory firmware currently.

I want to flash my phone

So you're trying to flash stock on top of stock?

The request is to see if you can flash a bare LG unlocked ROM that comes with factory unlocked phones onto a phone that came with a stock AT&T ROM. The Att phone has now been carrier unlocked, is used on a different network, so the Att specific apps that replaced stock apps no longer work.
I was also wondering if I could do this with my Tmobile G8; unlock the phone, then flash the unlocked LG OS instead of the Tmobile version. My goal is debloat, and to be able to have the original Android hotspot app. Not to mention get rid of that terrible pink, loud, annoying carrier startup splash.
Also, I wonder if security updates would come faster when strait from LG instead of the carrier.

Let me know if you find a debloated is for a T-Mobile g8

Has anyone figured out any method that actually works for just flashing firmware to the g8?

Unlike Samsung phones where you can flash other firmwares via ODIN I don't think this phone has that ability. If you got to the ROM/Development section there are threads where people posted firmwares but no instructions on how to flash.

We can actually cross flash, but we need a modified lg dll to fool lgup into letting us flash any firmware.

I have tried just about everything I can think of to get this thing to flash. I saw some people using lgup v1.15 via the command line but that didn't work either.

I am trying to do the same. I have a sprint version of the g8 thinq which i would like to install the unlocked version of the firmware. Any way to do so?

I have 2 unlocked sprint lg g8. One of them doesn't have the Sprint splash screens. So somebody was able to do something.

Hello,
I've tried to flash another firmware on an AT&T LM-G820UM10i with LGUP and a firmware found on lg-firmware.
The LGUP restarted the phone in Firmware update mode, then on LGUP, I got an error
Error 0x5319, Not allow to change the device.(ATT_US->OPEN_CA)
So I've unplugged and reboot the phone. Still working.

that just means one of the unit was not activated on Sprint (usually once activated Chameleon then kicks in and adds all the sprint stuff or boost depending on the MVNO)

I have all the necessary data and the LG DLL in the LGUP folder to put any ROM released, I have an LG G8 from AT&T, I am not within the United States but I am afraid that by modifying the ROM (KDZ) they will not work for me some things like 4G or some functions inside the phone, to specify live in Latin America, if someone helps me pass the LGUP data through Google Drive

Because the G8 and all newer LG phones have security measures to prevent cross flashing.
Many bloatware apps can be Disabled in App Info Settings. The rest can be removed with ADB shell "pm uninstall". Google it.
It's best to never ever buy carrier devices. There's a reason they're the ones sold with a discount :cyclops:

The Sprint LG g8 is recognized by lgup when it's on leaked beta. It's possible they haven't built in security measures yet, I'm going to try cross flashing

Lg g4 us911 10a (us cellular lg g4) what are my options after root

I got this phone off ebay for a deal 330$. My plan was to root and install an aosp rom.
I have rooted the phone but cannot find anyway to install twrp. Seems like all the twrp recoveries and custom roms are for tmobile and international versions
i was not aware when i bought this phone that it would be a us cellular version the ad did not say
anyways what are my options? Is it possible to get an aosp rom on this version of the phone any advice would greatly be
appreciated
Unfortunately there are no options as of now. The bootloader is locked and there hasn't been a workaround discovered for it yet like for other devices.
At best you can root and flash xposed on the phone as long as it has Lollipop, but as it looks now, you won't be able to keep root if you upgrade to Marshmallow.

thanks for the reply, i can stop searching like a fool lol
will i even get the marshmallow update, i have a us cellular version running on att network
The US Cellular model will most likely get MM soon, but if you're on the AT&T network, you won't get the OTA. I'm not sure if you would have to put a US Cellular SIM back in temporarily to get the OTA download, or if you could just remove the AT&T SIM and download it over WiFi. Otherwise, you could just get the kdz when it comes out, plug into your computer and force the update that way.

yah but even with the mm kdz file comes out it will be for us cellular and the phone will become carrier locked and i will have to go thru the hassle if getting unlocked. btw my firmware version is us99110a i bought it off ebay. the seller did not specify it was under any network just said network unlocked. but like i said my firmmware version is us99110a which i believe is a us cellular firmware
US991 Marshmellow
Hi Guys,
I am having a real issue here after reading this tread. I recently upgraded to marshmellow but my data stopped working. I cannot get the H+ anymore. I need to go back to lillipop. I am looking all over the internet trying to find out how i can roll back. i even factory reset the phone but is goes back to marshmellow. do you have a clue how i can do it?
I asked around and they directed me to http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/lgup-install-kdz-mm-lp-t3249803
My software version is US99120c.
Can I get help rooting the 10a? Every tutorial I see is 10c and I can''t update mine.

You can with a unlocked bootloader. But to go back to Sprint you need the official firmeware which they do not provide to the public.... I have a G7 had it unlocked, different firmware installed. Had no service, . Tried to flash another firmware and ended up wiith a hard brick.. Got it back to the first unofficial sprint firmware, then had to have Sprint reflash the official firmware for the phone.. What's nice the bootloader is still unlocked.. Right now I would not even try anything. Best bet is to return if able, and buy a already unlocked version, so long as you can use it with sprint.

Man I just bricked the phone, first I tried flashing G710EM using LGUP and Partition DL (Select All) it failed almost immediately, after rebooting the phone it booted straight to Firmware Upgrade mode. Then, I got G710N20f, also tried to flash it using Partition DL (Select all), this time it failed at more than 70% step BackupGPT, now when I reboot the phone, I get the LG logo but after the screen turns to whitenoise like, it seems like it is still in Firmware Upgrade as I can still connect to it using LGUP.
Any ideas how to unbrick it? :crying:

Are you sure it is firmware (bootloader unlcok)? or sim unlock, there is a difference.. If you did a bootloader unlock you will get a waring saying. "Warning your software can not be check or is corrupt, please relock the bootloader". If you don't have this kind of message of this sort, then you just had it sim unlocked.

im just going by the ebay listing. It states"Your phone will be converted to a unlocked firmware version and that i can no longer receive ota updates".
My software version is G710ULM11e and my build number is OPR1.170623.032 and im on security patch level july 1, 2018 and android 8.0. When i go to the update center to check for a software update it states im using the latest version for my phone.
I did try a prl update and update device config and it states profile cant be updated. SprintDM notification shows that it trying update mobile network. it comes on and off every 3 mins or so.
I hope this is enough information to go off of! If you need me more information , please tell.
Also I did contact sprint via chat and they stated i could get my firmware back to stock but its 2 about 2 hours away from my city . itll be a like a whole day trip for me since i don't drive and would have to take a bus. I would love to avoid that.
Thanks!

that problem with the Sprint DM trying to connect every couple minutes is a huge problem with the bootloaders be unlocked you will have to go to Sprint and have them do it it takes about 30 minutes because right now there is no firmware available for Sprint anywhere on the internet. when I get a break from my new job I am going to try and install TWRP on my device and if I do it successfully I will be able to upload some firmware but that's not guaranteed.

Whether you had insurance on the phone or not should not have mattered. Sprint should have flashed the firmware, cuz that's their damn job. They asked me the same question I told them no and they still flash the firmware.

You have to be assertive or act completely aloof. If you are a paying Sprint customer, they will reset/reflash your phone. If no one in your immediate area can help you out, maybe you can mail the phone to someone who can get it serviced (heh I'd happily do it for free but hopefully there is someone a bit tech savvy in your own social network).

Unlocked sprint lg g8 on new network that doesn't have its own firmware

Ok before I start I just want to say I'm a complete noob at android and how it works (got my first android a month ago) so don't get too angry if I say something stupid :/
So I bought an unlocked sprint g8 off of ebay but switched to another carrier called mint (uses t-mobile network) so I'm not sure how the software updates work. I'm aware I won't be getting updates from sprint, but I know that I have gotten 1 or 2 updates from lg since I got it. I'm a little confused as to if the updates from lg are all I need or if they are just security patches, and if there is a way to install sprint updates anyway.
I know I can solve this by unlocking the bootloader and installing custom roms once they start coming out, and on sprint I can enable oem unlock, but there is no way to access fast boot. If I do adb reboot-bootloader (or whatever the command is) it just does a normal restart. If I'm not wrong I should be able to do the bootloader unlock after lg adds the g8 to their supported devices, but I don't know how I'll be able to do this without accessing the fastboot. Recovery mode seems to be incomplete too (I can't use adb in recovery I think the drivers are not installed yet), so I think part of the sprint firmware is still kind of in a beta. So if the not being able to access fastboot and an incomplete recovery mode is a problem with the sprint firmware, will the lg updates themselves be able to solve this? Or is there anything else I'm completely missing?
Sorry if that was a little confusing but any answers would be great!
You will still get software updates. I have a sprint lg g8 unlocked on cricket and yesturday i just recieved the August 1 security software update.
I don't have an answer to your question, but does your Sprint model get VoLTE on Mint/T Mobile? Thinking about buying one.

There is almost a 0% chance LG will let US variants be unlocked. And with the impl lock we cant even crossflash the G8, so yea you are stuck with the sprint rom.
Your phone will update. Received August Security patch yesterday. Use ADB to remove Sprint bloat.

New LM-G820UM (AT&T) purchased from ebay. Using on T-Mobile and have update question
Hi all,
Grabbed a G8 Thinq for my son off ebay (which scared me but it was cheap). It's an AT&T variant but it's working just fine with T-Mobile. However, the security updates are from July and I'd like to update. I tried LG Bridge and get a "cannot check software version" error. Before I send this thing back I wanted to check here. I understand that OTA updates are super slow to arrived when you unlock and switch carriers but will I ever get one? Is there another way to update this thing?
I'm pretty Android savvy but just haven't messed around on here since my Nexus 6P days. Thanks!

AT&T is known not to release KDZs ever, and to only provide updates to postpaid AT&T customers. I assume that's true with G8 as well. I saw those unlocked AT&T G8 on eBay for $320, but I wouldn't expect any updates, nor would I expect warranty to be honored.

Sprint unlocked variant updates just fine on any carrier

Welp, this baby's going back. Just ordered up a T-Mobile version for only $20 more so "hopefully" it will actually update. Thanks for the guidance.

T-Mobile is pretty good with updates. I have T-Mobile V30 on Red Pocket GSMA (AT&T MVNO) and receive updates.
But T-Mobile phones are very hard to carrier unlock. They can only be unlocked with a T-Mobile Device Unlock app, which queries T-Mobile servers for approval. If the phone is relocked (such as after LG repair, or if you get a warranty replacement) you won't be able to unlock it again unless you're a T-Mobile customer and/or have had the phone on their service for some time (40 days postpaid, 1 year prepaid). It can't be unlocked with a code like other phones.
Like AT&T, Sprint also doesn't release KDZs, but as noted they are less restrictive about OTA updates. T-Mobile and Verizon release KDZs.
Carrier phones generally suck for the same reason that carriers generally suck: Everything they do is always designed to suck you

Yeah we just wait for bootloader unlock now

Hi all,
Grabbed a G8 Thinq for my son off ebay (which scared me but it was cheap).

Have a look on this thread:

I faced the precise same situation, I was able to get the updates by moving my # to ATT prepaid.

The T-Mobile V30 has official bootloader unlock, as the only North American carrier model. I believe the same was true with V20: Just Enable OEM Unlock in Developer Settings, boot into fastboot mode (Vol- while inserting cable with phone off) and enter fastboot oem unlock. The problem is the bootloader is neutered, with fastboot flash and fastboot boot commands stripped out. So even after BL unlock fastboot cannot be be used to flash or boot TWRP. But it still relaxes the secure boot chain. So once @runningnak3d found a way to flash TWRP using Download Mode (laf) we were golden.
Of course that laf vulnerability is long since fixed. And I am sure somebody must have already checked if the T-Mobile G8 has official bootloader unlock like earlier LG phones. Right? Or are we just assuming it doesn't because other carrier models don't? I only began following the G8 threads recently, so I wouldn't know.

Update to exploitable firmware?

Hello all,
I have an LG G8 on November firmware (I think) on Pie, not Android 10. I am looking to update to an exploitable firmware, but don't want to pay for AT&T service.
How do I go about doing this? I can see I can buy AT&T sim cards on eBay, but not sure what to go with.
My phone is also locked AT&T, but it looks like we don't have an unlocking solution yet. I know putting red pocket on the phone doesn't give me updates and still makes it so AT&T's unlock portal doesn't see my phone IMEI.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a way to do anything right now since the pie firmware isn't exploitable. The only thing you can do is try to call at&t tech support and have them add your imei to the update database

It looks like LG installs updates incrementally, so by purchasing an AT&T sim I think I can get to the exploitable firmware just by doing a couple updates. I'll post back once I get the sim
