Hi everyone, this is my first post, and I'm completely baffled and think I may have bricked my phone. Here is exactly what happened.
I've been running syndicate rom with vision kernel on my samsung epic 4g on sprint for a very long time. I've been getting the upgrade notification for months, so I finally decided it was time to upgrade. Unfortunately, the way I decided to upgrade was to go back to stock, and then let it naturally upgrade. I followed the instructions at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
and, the first time I tried to odin, it was stuck at "setup connection", so after waiting a very long time, I unplugged, then re-started odin. because I used the instructions at the above link, I had re-partition, auto-reboot, and reset time checked. This time, odin was able to get past "setup connection", and was stuck on "datafs.rfs" in odin, and on the phone, it no longer showed a downloading logo and looked like it was just off. I unplugged again, and this time, I could not easily get the phone into download mode. I tried a few things with the battery in, with it out, and finally, somehow, got it into download mode again. Trying odin 1.61, I tried again, it got stuck on datafs.rfs again, and after waiting a very long time, I unplugged again.
Now, I believe my phone is bricked. The following is true of my phone right now:
it does not turn on
it does not have any lights when plugged in
if plugged in, it will not go into download mode
if on battery, i can take out the battery, then put it back in, then i can go into download mode, but when in this mode, windows reports an unrecognized usb device. if the battery is in from when it was plugged in, it will not go into download mode. the battery must be popped out and then put back in to go into download mode.
terrible timing too, as my wife is expecting, and she'll most likely need to get in touch with me in the next week or two. If anyone can help me get my phone working again, that would be amazing. Thanks in advance for your help.

Windows not recognizing a device means you don't have the proper drivers installed. I'd link them to you but I'm at work on my phone. Search google for samsung epic drivers. Or i believe you can even get them from samsung's website.
And Congratulations on the new baby.

the link you posted has all the best instructions. Do not skip a step or circumvent any. Use the file links he has provided. And use Odin 1.85.
Take the battery out of your phone let it sit for at least 20 minutes, leave the battery out plug it into computer and attempt to get it into download mode.
Very important your not using the Samsung stock charging cable to do this. You need a good USB cable, one like the Blackberry phones come with, which is designed for heavy data transfer
Good luck.

The problem and the cause of your woes is a faulty cable. Get a heavy duty blackberry cable and try again. This time leave the battery out, using the cord as power put it into download mode with Odin already up on the computer and make sure to use the same port that it has been working in.

I actually tried a differnt cable because of the original link the first time, and that didn't work at all (used my wife's evo shift cable). But, I did find yet another micro usb cable in the house, and that one does seem to be working. Although, the odin flash does not seem to be, seems to be hanging (and the phone shows just blue across the entire screen), but that is progress =) Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll post my findings if I am successful in un-bricking. (or post where i get stuck next =P) Thanks again everyone.
When you get stuck again, Odin with the battery and sd card out.
Already took the SD card out. I can't go into download mode with just the cable though (already tried). Any recommendations? To get into download mode currently, I have to:
unplug everything
take out the battery
pop the battery back in
then, 1+power to download mode.

Sounds like either the cable still has issues or the USB port is not properly powered. If a desktop, use the USB ports in the rear right on the motherboard. I see you have had different results from different cables already, if you can just get ahold of a heavy duty Blackberry or Palm Pre cable.
How long should I wait before re-trying a new flash? It's been stuck on cache.rfs for the past 2 or 3 hours. I'll try the back usb port instead of front usb ports. I'll also try a palm cable, I think I have one lying around somewhere. Thanks for the tips.

Yeah, it is time to try again with those tips. 15 minutes is max.
SUCCESS!!
Following the original link, what I had to do was:
I plugged into rear usb
still wouldn't go into download mode, so unplugged, popped in battery, went into download mode, plugged in
started odin 1.61 (as in the trouble shooting part of the original link)
Used EC05 rom (as in the trouble shooting part of the original link)
my phone is back from the dead! Thanks for the help everyone.
Congrats man!
nice!

Just got back here and I also am glad you got it going. Congrats! These Epics are almost unbrickable...

Dear Friend , I have a galaxy nexus gsm version ( maguro ) , I have the following issue :
I 'm not able with my phone to go in recovery mode or reboot the system , every operation that I try to do on my mobile is not possible.
I have not problem of battery , and is not possible to connect the device by usb cable to the pc.
How can I solve it ? :crying:
Thank you in advanced.
So it just won't turn on? Or will it turn on but refuse to respond? Did you do anything to it or did it do anything just before it stopped working?
Does the computer even recognize the phone is plugged in? There is a thread in this forum about recovering a bricked galaxy nexus.
Shortly after we got our Nexi (the plural of Galaxy Nexus?), my wife's phone wouldn't power on. It wouldn't recognize the charger was plugged in, and wouldn't do anything. I took the battery out, and held the power button for 15-20 seconds. I put the battery back in, and plugged in the charger, with the phone powered off. The charging animation came on. I was then able to power the phone on normally, and we've had no issues since then. It's at least worth a shot.
Call Google or Samsung.

Guys I need your help
I don't know what happened to my Note II phone.
Only thing I've done was to root it. I'm still using the same O.S. I haven't tried flashing something on it before
Here's what happened.
I was just chillin, chatting on Messenger when all of a sudden, the phone LED indicator flashes but it doesn't unlock. then the phone died and when i was trying to charge it, there was only a charge icon on the screen but it wasn't moving.
The next day i bought a new battery and now what happened was that it wasn't going through the Galaxy Note II screen (bootloop perhaps?) i tried going through recovery mode -- dead android icon then it shuts down. and i was still able to access download mode
before i was able to follow the soft brick recovery mode, all of a sudden it doesn't even go to recovery/download mode anymore
LED indicator does not turn on for charging even if i plug it into the charger.
What do i need to do? i don't have JTAG as an option
I read somewhere that I you can boot hardbricked phones using an SD card by doing something about partition stuff there will that work?:laugh::laugh: hope to get some replies from you guys :good::good:
Have you tried using a 2.0 amp charger and letting the phone charge for a few hours?

Not much you can do if the phone can't get into recovery mode.
When connected to a computer, do any devices appear in the device manager?
I am also facing the same problem,,,,..not entering to recovery mode .......when trying to install stock firmware through odin (using windows 10)it says nand write and next step fail....i didn't even root my phone.....please friends help me....Thanks in advance....and yes it enters to download mode
Are you using the original Samsung USB cable? Tried other USB cables and all USB ports on the computer? What is the specific Odin error?

Well hello everyone i got a nearly new note 7 n930f with its box and all for about 130$ but the owner had let it update and now it only works while plugged to a charger, i tried getting into download mode while on charger but nothing happened just a black screen and sometimes it just boots up guess because the battery is at 0%.. i own a repair shop and i have a z3x box if nessecary.. i thought of opening it and charge the battery separatly or use s7 one but i really don't want to lose water resistance. But since i can get to use the phone i thought maybe i can root it using kingroot or sth and get system file and modify something so i can charge it a bit to get into download mode to flash twrp and costume rom but i'm not that good with sys files or mobile odin to downgrade to 30% battery firmware or sth.. i'm really stuck and i contacted samsung and they didn't want to take it back since it's purchased from another country (in europe)
Please anyone who has any solution help me.. i really love this phone and it was my dream phone when it launched
I did it guys, although no one has replied xD!.. after a lot of research, the way was to power on phone while on charger, check oem unluck then power off, plug usb into pc and do the download mode sequence 5 times with 3sec-1sec interval then flashed twrp and flash hydra kernel, it let it charge to 60%, after that anything can be done.. i'm on note fe oreo port btw!

I'm having similar problems, but mine won't go let me into the recovery menu. Does anyone have any useful tips for me? Can anyone elaborate on the concept of the 3-1 second thing? thanks in advance for all the help!
Accidentally my phone droped on the floor after that it kepps the mi logo loop after some time the battery got dead and phone also not charging. While connecting to the charger cable the led blinking and looping. Buy my phone doesn't charging and while on the flash process without battery the fastboot mode opens and closes rythmically.and my computer doesn't take the time to load the drivers. Now what to do feeling dizzy....
Please help me out of this problem. I think it bricked but not hard. Because the fastboot logo comes but not more than 5 seconds it goes off. Please help
Try giving it to a local repair store.
I also had the same problem. If I used to remove and put the battery back, it used to reboot. I tried flashing using fastboot, but it used to reboot every 6 seconds. According to some friends of mine (Thanks to them) I gave it to a store, which in turn (I dunno how) hardbricked the device. I connected it to the PC, tried to go to fastboot, and it shows up as QCOM Loader 9008, which basically tells you your device is hardbricked.
Fastboot didn't work.
Using MiFlash Tool, while flashing through the QcomLoader, it showed "Did not receive hello packet"
Tried many times more, didn't work out.
So, I went and tried the trusted method: TEST POINT method.
It worked out. Now my armani is up and running!
TL : DR;
Try giving it to a local repair store (not Mi service center, they didn't help me AT ALL.)
Something might have dislodged.
Or
Try testpoint method, google for it
it *might* work. Well, that worked for me.
Not end at all
Hi, sorry for very late reply
Recently I discovered that the battery is dead not working at all. And while doing the test point method I think battery power is needed! So I ordered a spare battery after the delivery I will do the test point method agian. Currently if I plug in my phone thorough usb to my computer the qcom 9008 port shows but while flashing it gets detached then re shows up . And the flashtool error happens. I think a battery power is required so that this failure is happening.
So, what do you think is edl mode requires battery power?.
Need help because I have to fix it. It's my one and only loved phone of all time.
Currently I am using my friends phone to discuss about this matter.....please help me.....

You do not need battery power for test point method.
