I've proudly been the owner of an H932 V30 (T-MOBILE) since launch. I've had a blast with this device. I'm also a proud owner of an H872 G6 (T-MOBILE).
Well. I moved to these phones after my H811 G4 (T-MOBILE) became too outdated for my needs.
The G4 has TWRP and root and ROMs as every TMO branded device I've ever had also did.
Well, LG took that away from us by stripping fastboot commands from their devices now. This is sad. But carrier unlocked models can be bought outright for upwards of $600-700 and LG will give you binary file to unlock the bootloader and void your warranty.
No matter, these phones are fairly premium devices and serve their purpose even without Root or ROMs.
The V30 is a multimedia powerhouse, great recording video and audio even in super loud venues! This phone absolutely blew my mind, being that at $800 it was highest price premium flagship device I've ever had. I was in love, like many are. I've been a long time LG fanboy and have always wanted a V-series device since the V10 was released and I'd finally gotten one.
After a while of living with this device as a daily driver i began to realize that it's not as great as I'd convinced myself it was.
I spend hours every day wearing headphones connected to my main device. Listening to music continuously.
The V30 was boasted as having the greatest audiophile sound quality though it's 32bit HiFi DAC utilized through its 3.5mm headphone jack. Admittedly, the sound quality is crisp, clear, and well driven. But is it what everyone says it is? Not entirely, but it's pretty amazing nevertheless.
The overall user experience with the H932 V30 is good, yet not anymore than just that, good. Only good, bordering great but not so much.
LGs skin has always been an acquired taste and I've always been okay with it. But they seem to have been trying too hard to follow the pack rather than be original. Theu even went as far as to remove basic Android options such as better notification control as I've always loved about LG. Even dropped from 8mp front camera as in the G4 (2015) to a puny 5mp potato cam. Insert facepalm here.
They were trying to win back the confidence of the haters giving them grief over past mistakes and alienating those like myself who'd stayed loyal through the ****storm of screw-ups.
This devicehas had a terrible update frequency, which is fine as the hierarchy of AOSP, OEM, & Carrier trickles down to the users eventually. But lack of support and further updates to more refined and stable versions of Android shouldn't be withheld from the end user who pays their premium prices for a so called premium device.
At any rate, I had accepted my fate as a V30 owner and kept looking forward. Everyday there was another issue with the device. . .
Sometimes heavy lags and stutters due to LGs UX skin. Periodically the HiFi DAC ceased to do anything leaving me with flatter sound than desired.
Then there's the highly inconvenient design of the device itself.
My V30 was eligible to receive a free Google Daydream VR headset, so of course I accepted it and I enjoy it. But there's an issue with the headset, LGs design of the device. The orientation of devices for Daydream thus far is only able to be used in one direction, 90 degree rotation to the left. This means the volume buttons are going to be tucked inside the headset and inevitably pushed against the hinge of the daydream viewer! This makes the sound either go to full max volume or fully minimum volume (no sound) wearing over ear headphones for maximum emersion into day dream with the volume buttons becoming stuck to full volume is quite painful, to say the least.
The infamous 3.5mm headphone jack containing the 32bit DAC, while it sounds good it's quite poorly placed on the device. This seemingly minor detail is the one MAJOR flaw that I cannot move passed on this device no matter how hard I try. The headphone jack is placed on the top of the device, which is an absolutely horrendous design choice for several reasons, let's explore my absolute disgust...
Having the headphone jack on the top of the device means during rain or other precipitation there's a chance of the jack getting very wet or filling with water. This isn't really a major concern on an IP68 rated device but it is a thought.
With the headphone jack oriented on the top side of the device this causes an annoyance while just relaxing watching movies with headphones on while the device os plugged in. The type-c port and headphone jack are on opposite ends of the device! This makes using headphones, charging, and holding the device all simultaneously a serious pain in the @$$. At least for me having to accomplish hand gymnastics to hold the device in odd ways as not to put pressure on either ports in use and cause any sort of extra wear, fatigue, or damage of the ports or cables.
Another very similar occurrence is while out and about. Sometimes you have your headphones in while commuting and you also need to use a power bank to get some extra juice in that rather small 3300mah battery! Makes sense doesn't it? Well, now put the device in a pocket with charging cable and headphone jack plugged into it. Go ahead do it! You can't without potentially damaging the ports and/or the cables! This is enraging, truly. The headphone jack should never be on the top of the device!
This brings me to my last and most absolutely infuriating point. The damned headphone jack is on the top of the device! I commute and walk a LOT so I have headphones in often. Of course I want to take advantage of that nice Hifi DAC whilst I commute, wouldn't you?
Well it's more difficult than you'd initially think.
The cord is a nuisance, therefore I always like to tuck the headphone cable into my shirt, hoodie, or jacket to keep it from catching on, well, absolutely everything all the damn time! Well, LG doesn't want convenience for me. Haha, well played LG! If i tuck the cord into a shjrt or jacket i won't be able to lift the device above my waste without putting unnecessary pressure on the wire and/or the connector. Or forcing the earbuds to pull down uncomfortably on my ears and essentially flop out of my ears! This is just a terrible situation overall.
This means that I am forced to wear the cable outside of a shirt or jacket and risk it getting caught on something possibly severing it, breaking it, causing the earbuds to be ripped violently from my ear canals, or pull my phone out of my hand!
Absolutely true! I've dropped this device a minimum of 11 times just because of the headphone cable getting caught on something or by simply putting my hand down and accidentally snagging the cord. When your $800 device goes flying for absolutely no reason while 2 pieces of metal are violently torn from your ear canals it's hard not to be overwhelmed with rage, embarrassment, disgust, & fear of damage all at once! This is absolutely unacceptable for a device that costs more than $40 (yes, forty dollars)!
Finally, I have always out my device into my pocket top down, since my first smartphone running Android 1.5 Cupcake. This orientation just makes perfect sense as the device will be top side up when you raise it to your viewing area. But with headphones plugged in i have to have the device top up then I'm required to remove the device from my pocket and use my other hand to reorient the device in my hand to have a chance of using it. Not to mention if the device is top down in your pocket and there's no cover on the headphone jack (my cases all have cover flaps on ports) you can get various pocket lint inside or dust whatever could be in the pocket.
To top this dumbass headphone jack situation off this could be lived with if I could have 180 degree orientation and just use the phone upside down. Oh but there's no option for that! I could add it myself, but, that would require rooting the damn phone! AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHH, I hate you LG! You trolled me so badly.
But, live and learn. I only paid $325 after all rebates and deals for my V30 so whatever at this point.
In the meantime. I'm now a VERY PROUD owner of a OnePlus 6! Which DOES have the headphone jack on the bottom where it belongs. Yes, I unlocked the bootloader and rooted 53sec after opening the device.
Oh yea, its also the single greatest Android experience I've ever had. I have never once witnessed an Android device as fluid and snappy as the OnePlus 6, not once! Not to mention simply holding the devjce is nearly orgasmic in its own right. Its an absurdly sexy device and feels more premium than the V30. And the 1080p screen isn't bad. Definitely not as bad as screen banding and completely crushed shadows in video on the V30 at lower brightness!
And the OnePlus 6 is significantly cheaper than the v30 was when it launched.
As for the perfectly mounted headphone jack on the OP 6, well its sound quality makes the V30 headphone jack sound like a tin can on a string! It completely obliterates the V30 in audio output and performance. I still can't believe it myself and I own both!
That was a looooong rant about almost nothing, I don't even remember what this was about anymore. Haha
If you made it this far, good for you! You must have a lot of freetime Thanks for reading! If you're a V30 owner, I have a used SupCase Unicorn Beetle Pro case that I will no longer need for the V30. It's in great condition and fully entact no scuffs or scratches! Just cover some shipping and it's yours.
I'm not giving up on my V30 & G6. They're mine and I love them, mostly.
??
I just want to say I'm sorry because I skimped though your post and maybe didn't catch everything you said, but did you realize that the LG V30 can actually be unlocked and rooted (every model BUT the H932)?
I think the only point I can agree on is the bad front camera and the back camera which is short of exceptional. The headphone jack placement is a mild discomfort, nothing more. Most other things you mentioned can be fixed via rooting.
The development for this phone is just picking up now that most models can be unlocked, and I expect a lot of improvement in the next couple of months.

Oh yes. I absolutely know this. And I have 2 H932s. Trust me I know. But I have a OP6 so I can finally have root again.

But you lose the quad dac and the wide camera, which is a pretty big deal. And of course you could have gotten root anyway if you didn't choose a carrier locked model.

I didn't have $900 lying around to get a phone at the time. And I couldn't have gotten non carrier devices with my Jump upgrade anyway..
It doesn't matter. My V30 & G6 are now backup phones to my OnePlus. LOL

I love the headset jack on top, and it's the best place for it as I hold my phone on the bottom.
Just have to refute the other rant.
Also you can get bootloader unlocked and rooted mint V30+ that will work on any carrier for $335. Yesterday, with one- day sale was even $268 with free shipping.
LG V30/V30+ was the best phone of 2017 and still beats pretenders like inferior OnePlus. QHD 1440p display, Qi wireless charging, quad DAC.
I actually returned my midnight black op6 256 with 8 gigs of RAM two days ago. Went to the launch event in SF. Found out that they didn't sell 256 models there after waiting in line for an hour and a half, then ordered one online. At this time I saw the eBay auction for Sprint v30+ for $325 taxes in and ordered it immediately.
Spent a few days with both phones and concluded that the op6 (which I paid 729 for with an accessory bundle) was in no way worth over double what I paid for the v30. I find the cameras to both be just OK. Neither is in the pixel2 or iphone8 range. I do like and use the wide angle camera on v30 but the front facing is garbage. I had issues going back to a full HD screen coming from HTC 10. The vibrate motor in the op6 felt cheap. Though dash charging is arguably the superior tech, I didn't want to have to replace all of my quick chargers at home and in cars.
All in all, I think OnePlus is doing a fantastic job, I would just pay 40% more for 40% more quality. That's me. My plan is to use the v30 through the summer and see what pixel 3 looks like come fall.

I just replaced my G6 with a V30. Does the V30 have a shortcut (or widget like the G6) for the square camera? Is the only way to access the square camera on the V30 is via the settings in the camera app?
I thought about the OP6 after my G6 died, but I can't do without wireless charging and wide angle camera.

You confused me with "square camera". What do you mean?
Are you asking how to put a shortcut to your camera on the desktop? Surely you're not asking that, so what the heck is the "square camera"?

Yeah I'm not buying a phone without Qi wireless charging. Even iPhone has that now. OnePlus doesn't know what they are doing. Maybe one day OPPO will v actually let the release a premium phone with QHD display and Qi wireless charging.

On the G6, the 1:1 ratio camera is called the "Square Camera". LG provides a widget to open it directly. On Nova Launcher I can set a home screen shortcut to launch it directly. On the V30 I have to open the camera and change settings to 1:1.

Hey to each their own. I hate the extra fatigue on the cord being at the top and the extra precautions I have to take.
Oh I love my V30 & G6. But I need certain stuff like bottom jack and working fastboot.
However the recording quality of the V30 is irreplaceable. I'm not getting rid of any of my LG devices.
Honestly if I could put a SD821 chip or better in my G4, I'd use it exclusively as it's practically the perfect phone in design. Dammit 808! LOL.
Currently the OP6 is the best thing I've experienced. Especially having bootloader unlock, twrp, & root 2min wfter receiving it... I can't wait to buy a 6t later this year! Yay.
BTW Chazz, are you running your V30 stock? I have crazy lags sometimes after Oreo update. Also, sometimes the device freezes when I have PiP running with YouTube. V30 needs 8.1. and to run stock Android. LOL never gonna happen on either of those.
But I'll still use it nevertheless. Heck I'm commuting right now and running OP6, V30, & G6 currently!

The quad dac does work on AOSP roms with Whiskeyomega's mods. Wide angle should potentially work with the cstark google cam wide angle app. The camera situation is not ideal (2apks and you lose video modes if you care about those) but the mods are a perfectly fine compromise for what you get in return.

Yes, I am still running stock. I normally love custom ROMs and may move to them eventually, but I'm too busy to mess with them right now. Working 60 hour weeks right now and weekends are taken up by necessary stuff like family and mowing the grass.
Of the 5 (yes 5) V30/V30+ I have, one is being prepared for my sister, possibly one for my 88 year old mother (she's still on a Straight Talk feature phone which may be dying -- so THAT will be quite a ride, explaining not only Android to her/Google Assistant, but just modern touchscreens, etc.)
My wife is still on non-rooted V30 and I'm trying to figure out how to swap her to one of the others temporarily while I then bootloader unlock and root hers. I need like one full day to do it right.

Yea I'm about to use TMobiles jump ootion on my current V30 and use my paid off one. But so far I'm loving my OnePlus 6 with official TWRP, ElementalX kernel, Magisk, V4a, and plenty of ROMs in development.
Apparently you can also flash official OTA files in TWRP as if it's a ROM. Awesome. I still daily my V30 and G6, but the OP6 is just a flatout beast with everything I could want as of right now. And the audio output is actually very good from the jack.
I know you hate 1080p display but it doesn't bother me and this device is absolutely fantastic.
Wish an unlocked V30 cost the same. But for $615 i got a nearly stock Android experience with 8gb RAM, 128gb storage, SD845, Karbon Fibre case, tempered glass screen protector, 24ohm impedance earbuds (that sound great), & an OTA cable. V30 comes with.....a microfibre cloth. Mmmhmm. At least it's LG branded. LOL

In December, if my V30+ from T-Mobile doesn't have root, I'll likely be moving on to the next.
We shall see what's available.

I don't think I have ever had a problem with charging my phone with Type-C and using the 3.5mm on top at the same time while holding my phone.....and I walk with the cord out because having it in my shirt or sweater is uncomfortable and as you said would make it almost impossible to use....i also never used it that way on my U11 which usd Type-C headphones....
One plus 6 ain't as good for multimedia

Lol, 1080p, as you said, worse sound than the previous one plus model through the headphone jack so it's not even in the same league as the v30, no card slot, no wide angle. How is the one plus as good as the v30 for multimedia? 8 GB of RAM is cool though. The one plus is better for opening apps speedily but not for multimedia purposes.

1080p is.fine.
Don't need wide angle on op6 because i have it on my V30 & my G6..
Headphone jack is 1. Mounted in a usable place the BOTTOM of the phone where it belongs. 2. Had a friggen equalizer amd sounds absolutely incredible because I can drop the disgusting treble way down.
Besides that, i can actually root the op6 unlike my v30 and I can use V4A which add to the amazing experience of the OP6s dac.
I don't even care that the op6 is 30x faster than my v30. All i care about is the properly mounted headphone jack so i can actually use wired headphones outside of my home. Being able to tuck my cord into a shirt (between shirt and undershirt) or hoodie keeping me from ruining my cord or repeatedly dropping the device because I keep getting caught.on anything like my own goddamn hands. Also, I can pocket the device the CORRECT way, top side down, instead of the top side up bull**** that makes the fingerprint scanner unusable without rotation of the phone in hand.
I'm not bad mouthing the v30. It has the potential to be good. Everything is a 10/10 on it but the headphone jack drops 4 points and no root drops more. But it's still better than crapple.
Id love it more if I could have a friggen equalizer on the headphone jack so I could take advantage of the sound..
Besides having the device plugged in with headphones while holding it is the most awkward bull**** experience ever. You have to hold it a very particular way as to not ruin the cords on both sides and cramp your fingers. Headphone jack on top is is not practical in any way. Its only good for plugging into speakers and setting the phone down or in a car with aux cord..
Headphone jack location alone is the factor that makes this device not worth buying if you want to use headphones on the go without taping an extension to your phone like I had to.
But mine only costed me $310 so its a.great backup/work phone
The Dirac tuned audio may not be as mainstream as B&O, but at least it has an EQ built-in. Besides, the OnePlus headphones ($20) are far superior to the the LG/B&O headphones ($140) in sound quality and bass. And both sound better on the OP6 with reduced treble.
Also, audio calling on the V30 with headphones is awful! I can hear everything in my Microphone like breathing and the cord flopping around. Granted the other person doesn't, but I can. It's realy upsetting.
BTW this is difficult to type as I just sliced off my thumb tip at work a few hours ago and cannot use it..

Besides, i only get 8hrs of SOT with the v30.

I have the HTC One M8 since launch and love it. The looks, the smoothness, Sense UI. Best smartphone I ever had (came from a couple of Samsung, which were dissappointing).
The only thing failing is the battery but I already bought a new one and will be replacing it soon. But I'm debating if I should upgrade to the new HTC 10...I also thought about the Pixel but seems too expensive, only reviews will tell of course.
To anyone who went from the M8:
Is it worth it? Is it definitely faster and with better battery life? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Thanks in advance for your input.
Cheers
i came from an m8 and would definitely recommend it. it's much faster and the battery life is much better. also, given that it's unlocked (i had an att m8), the updates are more frequent.
things i don't really like about it, the headphone jack is on the top instead of the bottom. i also preferred the m8's method of turning the camera on (by double clicking on the volume) instead of the 10's method of swiping down on the screen since i seem to always be turning the camera on by accident.

Did you have the M8 since it was launched? Did you get to replace the battery? I've noticed that battery life is not the same has it was at the beginning but to be honest the worst moment was when we got the Android 5 Lollipop update. Other than that it's still blazing fast so I can't really imagine something much faster than this. Is the 10 that much faster?
The Google Pixel is going to be announced tomorrow so I might as well wait for the first reviews. Even though I would love fast software updates from Google (and that will last not 2 but 3 years) I doubt that the sound quality will be has good and it is on the M8 and the 10.

Yes, I had the M8 since launch although ATT replaced it when they upgraded to lollipop because their update made my GPS go haywire (it couldn't be turned off and so drained my battery like crazy). the replacement m8 has worked fine. Both m8's didn't really have any issue with the battery. I still have my m8 which i'll use as a backup.
I'd also wait for the pixel phone reviews to see what they're like.
I ran M8 from launch day right up until the 10, and is absolutely worth it. The development is wonderful as well.
I do agree, however to see what the Pixel devices are like.
I honestly didn't think the 10 was a huge upgrade over the M8, but in certain key aspects, the 10 is a marked improvement. The battery on the 10 is similar to what I used to get when I first got the M8 on Kitkat, but my M8 was getting pretty worn down by the end. The camera of course is a huge upgrade, even in low light and optical stabilization is a fantastic thing to have. The software is not that much faster in my opinion. I had my M8 running really well and the 10 is similar, though scrolling is noticeably smoother especially in chrome. Game performance is also much better understandably. One thing I find really useful is the fingerprint scanner and side mounted power button, they both make the phone a lot easier to access if you use a lock of any sort. The display is interesting, I have the Tianma version and it had a prominent pink tinge at first, but it definitely has cleared up using my m8 and Nexus 5X as reference. The 10 is better calibrated than the M8 and the vivid mode does add a lot of punch for movies and games, max brightness is similar even if a lot of reviews have measured lower readings. Auto brightness still sucks.
As far as audio quality goes, I'll copy what I wrote earlier on Head-fi:
Owned the M8 since release day, just picked up the 10 about a month ago, currently working on a review, so here are some of my notes:
As far as SQ through the headphone jack goes, the quality is noticeably better with a very low noise floor even with my most sensitive iems, the Shure SE215, Westone UM 50 Pro and Oriveti Primacy, it's barely noticeable if at all. The M8 by comparison had a lot of hiss with those earphones.
Output impedance is definitely lower as it sounds more inline with my Oppo HA-2 than the M8 does with particular earphones.
Volume is pretty similar between both, I don't own anything particularly hard to drive and I'm more of a low level listener so hiss is usually a bigger issue to me.
Overall, I'm really liking the headphone out on the 10, it has HTC's usual quality AMP with plenty of voltage for high impedance gear and also plenty of current for low impedance monitors but this time, the discrete DAC is of much higher quality (Likely the Aqstic DAC), reproducing songs with a lot more dynamic range, everything sounds a lot cleaner.
As for speakers, it's a mixed bag as others have stated. I do think that the full range driver on the bottom/side of the phone is of slightly higher quality than the drivers used on the M8 but the top tweeter is pretty average.
The bottom speaker is mostly dominant with the front speaker complimenting certain sounds. The 10 does have the immediacy of sound that the M8 produces through this setup, where purely bottom/rear firing phones can sound more diffuse, but it lacks the sense of depth produced by the stereo setup.
The 10 has more extension in either direction, treble in particular is much crisper though the lower midrange has less body. Bass notes are punchier through the 10 though the midrange sounds somewhat skewed due to the uneven speaker output. More detail and clarity on the 10's speakers are great for videos and vocals in general.
I think the sound quality of the 10's speakers is ever so slightly better but the placement is of course inferior. The M8 has an extra notch of volume but distorts slightly at the top two notches, the 10 does not, so in that sense, the usable volume range is higher, but overall volume doesn't get quite as loud. You'll notice a lot of internet reviews use the music preset, the movie preset actually produces a lot more volume but soundstage effects can make vocals sound more hollow.
If you use the phone speakers to listen to music, definitely check out this video detailing some eQ settings though Poweramp, it does produce a much nicer sound than stock when used in conjunction with the Dolby music present. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEQsxcoh3Uw)
Be sure to assign this eQ to speakers and the flat eQ preset to headphones so Poweramp will automatically switch between to two when headphones are plugged/un-plugged.
So in my testing, the 10 has small upgrades in most areas and large upgrades in a few. I would say it's like a very refined M8 which I already found to be a fantastic smartphone (I hated using the M9). The 10 has no real disadvantages compared to the M8 except the speakers and it's a little wider in dimension.

Thanks, I had already read your answer on Head-fi and you've been very helpful once again. I am actually very glad to know that speed and smoothness is not that different between the M8 and the 10 since I love this phone and was hoping to keep it a while longer, not letting the "upgrade bug" bite me
Indeed battery life on the M8 got worse after they updated it to Lollipop because before that I always got to bed with 30% at least, which stopped happening afterwards. Of course 2 years of heavy use also had its toll and I am hoping that replacing the battery with a new original one will help regaining some of the battery life I used to have but I dont really know if it will help. I actually love my M8 camera but I didn't try the HTC 10 so probably it´s because I haven't tried anything better. I also love the sound that come from the speakers (the guy that replaced my once faulty micro usb port cleaned the speakers grills and sound is once again very nice, just like it was when I bought it). I particularly love the sound when using headphones. I came from the Galaxy S3 and S4 and there's not even a comparison.
I believe I have very nice hearing but I only use the Xiaomi Piston 3 headphones, if you participate in the Head-Fi forums you surely know they have nice and balanced sound quality for the price (20 bucks) but I wanted to ask you another question, if you dont mind: would you recommend me a better in ear headphones, ones that cost less than, lets say, 60 bucks or so? Will I see significant better sound quality than my Xiaomi Piston 3?
Thanks again for your input
Cheers

Thought that username looked familiar! I had the Pistons 3's for a while and they're very good for the price. They're warmer and bassier than neutral so I would look at the Shozy Zero for $60 on the dot. They have a similar warm sound, they're a really nice step up but you'll perhaps miss the remote. I found them to sound better than my Klipsch X10's which cost me over $100 and they're also lot better than the Shure SE215 in the sound department. There's heaps of reviews on the net, it's definitely a model to consider.

Thanks, I will read some reviews about them. Cheers
Ryan's review is spot on.
I came from the M8. In short, I upgraded because of the upgrade bug mainly. After a couple of months of usage, I can say that I could have stayed with the M8 longer. The major differences are (1) improved build quality (e.g. no dust under the lenses; no scratches), (2) much better camera, (3) finger-print scanner, (4) punchier audio jack output.
As you can see, the only two things that really make a difference are the camera and the fingerprint scanner. Otherwise, I generally feel I haven't gotten a new phone, if not for the visually different front side.
In the end, if you take lots of photos, it's probably justifiable to upgrade. If you don't take too many photos, then the upgrade bug is the only real reason to upgrade.
Cheers.
PS: I love the 10. It's easily the greatest phone I've ever held/seen. It's just that the M8 was so amazing in its own right that it's a small upgrade to the 10.

I came from the M7, so I know I'm answering slightly out of place, but I did have a few M8 Dev phones I used and played with, but didn't use as a daily driver.
I paid full US Unlocked retail cash money, so it was a substantial investment upfront to get the M10, not just a monthly finance charge.
My honest opinion, it was totally worth it. I considered the nexus or one of the CM or blu type devices because of instant OS updates and unlocking. I'm SOOO glad I went with the HTC 10.
It offers me HTC Sense, and unlocking it thanks to sunshine (it's actually S off, not unlocking, but for ease of use we will call it unlocking) was easier than some of my nexus devices, literally.
Hardware and build quality is amazing, and the sense software and rom selections are too notch.

I went through 2 M8s and loved them. Definitely one of the best devices I've ever used. The only reason I ended up upgrading to the 10 was because my second M8 got wet and the screen died. To me, it was worth upgrading rather than trying to repair it. There are some definite benefits of upgrading.
The phone is more comfortable to hold.
The all-glass front looks incredible and has resisted fingerprints and smudges much better than my M8 did.
The cameras are much better (although the "laser autofocus" does mess up from time to time, especially looking through a window)
The screen is larger and even more crisp. Colors are brighter.
Battery life is MUCH improved.
Quick-Charge 3.0 is like magic. It's seriously impressive how quickly this phone charges.
USB-C is "future proof" and a better connector. Not more finding the right orientation or loose connections with old cables.
I thought I'd hate the power button on the side, but I actually love it. It's a solid button and it makes taking screenshots (pwr+vol dn) easy with 1 hand.
The fingerprint scanner is a HUGE plus. I still keep a lockscreen password as a backup, but 99% of the time, it unlocks with a single finger press.
I don't know if you still have your M8 stock (if you're on XDA, I hope not ), but I had a big issue with my M8 when I first got it, with the "wipe after 10 failed unlock attempts" that was built into the OS. It ended up trying in my pocket and when I took my phone out, it was wiped. Installing a custom ROM fixed that for me. On the HTC 10, they changed it very wisely. After 5 failed finger print attempts it will lock you out for 30 seconds. To unlock in this window, you need to use your passcode/PIN. If you try and fail on the passcode, it will give you 3 more tries until locking you out from that too for 30 seconds. After 5th failed unlock attempt, it will then ask you to trace a pattern on the screen, before it will let you try again. If you don't follow the pattern pretty closely, it won't let you try again. This makes it virtually impossible to accidentally wipe your device, while still preserving the security feature. I'm not sure if this is a MM feature or an HTC feature but it's great and has saved me a few times already.
There are some cons about switching from the M8 to the 10 though....
No more IR blaster.
No more Barometer.
Headphone jack is moved to top of the phone.
Rear camera sticks out.
Speed / performance increase is not very noticable. The M8 is still a competitive phone.
Neutral is the boomsound speakers. The M8's front stereo speakers were definitely louder, but not significantly so. The front/down combo on the 10 works fine.
A negative of both the M8 and the 10 is the IP rating. IP53 just doesn't cut it. I learned first hand how intolerant to water the M8 is, and the 10 is no better. HTC needs to get next year's flagship up to IP68 or they're going to really struggle.

I am using stock rom, tried several Google based and sense based and didn't like them, I actually think that the stock one is better, especially since Marshmallow.

Thanks for the time you took mentioning the advantages and disadvantages of making the upgrade. My only gripe currently is battery life, that's why I ordered a battery and will be replacing it. 2 years of heavy use takes its toll. Let's see how that goes.
I won a blackberry DTEK50 (it's the Alcatel idol 4 hardware rebranded with blackberry software on top of Android) and a UMi Max Smartphones on 2 Internet giveaways (in the same day, talk about luck, right?) , they haven't arrived yet but I believe none of them would be a proper upgrade over my M8 so I think I'm selling the DTEK50 and giving the UMi Max to my niece. Do you guys agree that the DTEK50 is more of a sidegrade as well?
Cheers
I wasnt planning on upgrading to the 10 but broke my m8 a couple weeks ago. Things i like right away; better camera (faster focus/snapping and quality) battery seems to last longer/charges faster, phone is quicker in general and audio from headphones is better (more on this last one below.) The USB C is nice (other than having to buy a few extra cables to keep around the house/car,) nice not having to align the direction when plugging in. Transferring data to/from computer is quicker.
One of the main reason i was interested in the 10 if for its audio, i use Sennheiser Momentum 2, over ears. Noticeable improvement of the M8 in back to back listening of the same songs. Momentum 2's are lower impedance (compared to most headphones in that price range) and the 10 get louder than i can comfortably listen to but even fully cranked, sound is clean. I'd be curious to see how well it could power a higher impedance headphone without a standalone amp. Also, noticed an improvement with my old M8 Harmon Kardon ear buds (new 10 doesnt come with any, which i didnt plan on using but found odd)
ROM support seems pretty good, still waiting for a daily driver AOSP style rom but VIPER has been issue free.
Down sides, the phone feels larger in the hands, not so much heavier/dimensionally but maybe weight is in different place? I know, that sounds odd but just how it feels holding it one handed. The power button on the side was easier to get used to, no longer phantom touching the top of the phone. I liked having the headphone jack next to the charging port on the bottom, made it easier to use both at the same time. No more IR blaster, which i didnt use often but still used on occasion.
Speaker audio seems quieter, not really liking the ear and bottom firing speaker vs dual fronts of the m8. If holding the phone in landscape and watching videos, your hand can easily muffle the sound depending on how its held. Dual front speakers seemed to direct the sound towards your head better. The sound range seems to come mostly from the bottom speaker, depending on how you holding the phone can change that.
Overall, pretty happy with the device. Waiting to see if I can get a second one on sale/contract for the wife. Scored my Sprint version from Bestbuy.com for $100 but havent had luck finding a second in stock at that price.
I came from the m8 too. The HTC10 is a brilliant phone with a few flaws.
The camera (or at the very least, the software) can be a little temperamental. The sound does not match up to the M8's boomsound at all. With that in mind, however, its better than pretty much every other phone without a similar set up.
You would also be moving from USB Micro to USB-C. A much needed improvment, but maybe stock up on cables, and make sure they support quick charge
As for things that I prefer over the m8, the black navigation bar at the bottom of the screen is gone, and replaced by hardware navigation. This is much better to me, as I always felt the onscreen navigation just wasted screen space really.
The finger print scanner is one of the best I have used on any phone, and using that to wake up and unlock the phone makes getting used to the moved power button a non-issue.
I did have issues with the headphone jack being on the top, but im just used to it now.
I have installed custom roms (you dont need to S-OFF to do this whatsoever, just unlock the bootloader using HTCDev) and this improves much. In a default stock condition though, its a pretty damn good phone. Certainly happy to be using it for the next two years.
I came from the M8, but am returning to it once I get it unlocked for use with my current carrier. Cameras (I never take pictures) were a non-issue for me, I could care less about them. For me, it is a software issue. I like Sense and the way it is/was implemented. With each iteration of HTC phones, Sense seems to be in a state of retreat, abdicating to standard Android apps. Many things that have been removed are the very items I liked. Vanilla Android is not for me. Soooooo, for me it's back to the M8 and a dilemma over what my next phone will be. Certainly not an HTC unless miracles occur.

Thank you both for your answers I am more and more inclined to keep my M8, replacing the battery, of course.
Cheers!
I still have my M8 and to me, the 10 makes the M8 look generic. The screen is much better and much more beautiful, it is much faster and smoother and although the sound doesn't seem louder from the speakers, it is mainly because it is much clearer and sounds much better. Especially certain ringtones just sound much better. This lie I keep hearing that the M8 boomsound speakers are much better is aggravating lol. I mostly hear it in the same post where they are talking about the S7. The 10 is an absolutely perfect phone and the development is amazing. Viper 10 is the most perfect ROM I have ever experienced. I always thought I would hate hardware buttons but after going back to my M8 when flashing ROM's, the onscreen buttons are annoying. I liked my M8 and M9, was disappointed with the M9 luckily I was able to trade it in for the 10, but I absolutely love my 10. There is no doubt it is a worthy upgrade. Having it now, I would hate to have not ever experienced it. You would have to be very picky to have anything bad to say about it.
Figured we probably needed a place to put everyone's first impressions.
I'll start with first, this thing is small and light! Coming from a V20 and a Nexus 6 before that, this thing is tiny. Last time I felt like I had a phone this size was the Galaxy Nexus. (Yeah, I know. That one was probably actually smaller than this but still, this thing feels that small in hand to me. I've been using nothing but phablets since that phone.) It feels closer in size to my work iPhone 6s than my V20. That's going to take some getting used to. It's in a case now but still feels small.
Still trying to get used to some app behaviors that seemed to have changed. For instance, Weather Channel app is having all kinds of issues. Shows as a sensitive notification on the lock screen vs my V20 where it isn't, because it isn't. The widget doesn't display information without being cut off. I still need to go log into all my apps and get them set up.
Camera. Haven't really taken any shots with it yet but I did dig through it. First, I'm not happy that it always opens in auto mode. The V20 would open in whatever mode you last had it in. I prefer manual mode and liked that I could just open it, make a quick adjustment to the settings and shoot. Now I have to dive into a menu to get to manual then make adjustments and shoot. It'll slow things down quite a bit. I am happy that Graphy can be shut off. Also, noise reduction can be shut off in manual. It was actually disabled by default. Going to do a lot of test shooting today.
Hoping to hit up the museum I used to work in and always test every camera I own there. Also hitting up an outdoor night event here as well as the jazz club. It's going to get one helluva workout today! Going to take my V20 and Nikon V3 along too. Not sure how much I'll use the V3 outside of the outdoor event. Not going to bother taking my DSLR. (I'm actually in the process of downsizing my photography to smaller cameras. DSLRs have gotten way too clean and clinical for my tastes.)
Nice! I can’t wait to see the pics it takes.
I played with this at Verizon yesterday, and I'm still on the fence. The front facing camera was HORRIBLE. I held my G5 next to it and took a selfie, and the G5 was so much better. The rear camera did seem to take awesome shots, but still slow to take and delay in swiping between front and back cameras, something I really thought they'd have a better handle on by now since I had the same issues in the G4 and G5. I loved it otherwise, I think it's a gorgeous phone, I like the looks a lot more than the Galaxy phones.
I went in wanting the phone, but two separate Verizon reps were adamant in saying I should stay away from LG, that they have nothing but problems, they only sold maybe 2 G6's, they have class action lawsuits against them, and they tell customers to go take a hike when asking for a new phone after having multiple of them die in a row from a known defect. Theyd rather keep sending you defective phones repeatedly under warranty. So idk. I'm reeeally torn between this and the S8+ which has very similar specs and is cheaper at this point, but I don't like having only one rear camera.
Initial results at the museum are looking pretty good. I'm impressed so far for the most part. As for selfie camera issues, I was disappointed at first until I figured out those stupid settings at the bottom of the screen. After you turn off the skin toning and lightning, the images are much better. Then they work well with post processing.
Have you had a chance to play w Bluetooth, GPS, Wifi/Data connection? My G4 had bad bluetooth disconnections and busted gps in the G5. Just curious how the different antennae have been working for you. Good battery life?

Haven't played with GPS yet. I can't really speak to how well or not how well it works. I used wifi during set-up. It worked but my wifi is slower than my network connection and I regretted using it. Not a knock on the wifi of this phone, it's just that my carrier network is that much faster than my home wifi. Only BT I've done so far is to connect it to my car. That went much better and smoother than my V20. It took me many attempts over an hour and a half to get my V20 and car paired. The V30 paired the first time. The next test will be to see if I have to restart my phone after a few days to keep the connection from going wonky. (Which is a ritual with my V20 that occurred at least once a week.)
I got mine this past Friday. It is slippery to hold, you will def need a case to keep it from sliding out of your hand. I'm still not sure why designers can make insanely powerful devices but can't figure out that you actually need to hold on to it to use it. I'll probably get a DBrand skin or equiv when they are available. It is super light. Kinda feels flimsy it is so lightweight even though it is not. My last phone was a Nexus 6P, before that an HTC M9, before that an HTC M7. All three of those feel like tanks by comparison. I'm not sure yet if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Camera is nice but uses a lot of noise reduction. It has endless options that will take some time getting used to. I'm not sure yet if it is as good as HTC's U11 which as an incredible camera IMO (my GF has a U11). Looks better than my Nexus 6p for sure though. Much faster too. I love the wide angle lens!
Audio from Headphone jack is insane. I'm using the BEATS headphones from my old HTC One, I can only imagine how good it would sound with high end headphones. Phone speaker is ehhh. Nowheres near as good as HTC or Google phones with front facing speakers. Or HTC U11 which seems to have crazy sound magically radiate into space.
As for speed, its as fast as any other 2017 phone I have tried, the hardware is all the same. The screen is amazing. I mean AMAZING! I can't really see a difference between 1080 and 1440 quality or speed wise. I thought at first there was but now think it is more of a placebo effect. I have been keeping it maxed mostly for the bragging rights of it being higher rez than Apple's silly Superduper mega retina display, what ever that means.
It is to early for me to tell if battery life makes a difference with resolution. I have read it is supposed to eat more power with the higher rez. It isn't as near bezelless as I thought it would be. It seems to be a marketing trend for company renders to show super edge to edge displays until you actually get it and there are good sized bezels. Not that I mind, it is just something I noticed. The screens are not any larger, the phone is just shrinking around it making the device seem small and the screen seem smaller than it is. My Nexus 6p dwarfs the V30 in the hand and the display just feels larger on the Nexus even though it is not. Kind of another odd placebo effect.
Speaking of battery, it seems to last well over a day of playing hard with it but is still to early to tell since I keep plugging it in to transfer files. After the newness wears off I think I will be able to get 2 days out of it.
The power button, or lack there of is great I think. Instead of a dedicated button, it is just the fingerprint scanner. You can click it, hold it to open restart options etc. Works great and is non intrusive by comparison to a dedicated button that I usually hit by accident all the time.
The UI is not terrible. It is fast and responsive. For the record I am a fanboy of Sense and Stock. LG's UI has a lot more options for customization over Stock but some things seem like they just changed from stock to say they did. Especially in the Settings menu where they feel extra pages of settings tabs is preferable than a simple list. The worst part is LG's apps that are mostly broken or limited.
Contacts doesn't work right and crashes sometimes when I try and edit a contact. You can not fully disable it. I'm using Google Contacts when it will let me.
Calendar is ok, about the same as Google Calendar. Again you can not fully disable it for some reason.
Camera app is good so far, or at least I like it.
Messaging app sux. It freezes sometimes and when it works you can't insert gifs. Again you can't disable it. I'm using Google's Messenger.
Keyboard is limited, I just use the Google Keyboard.
Gallery is simple and works for on device pix but doesn't allow cloud access. Since most of my pix are on GoogleDrive I just use Google Photos. And again you can't disable it.
Smart Cleaning is a cleaner app. The phone is so fast I can't see any difference after using it.
LG Health I haven't tried yet.
LG Smart World is just some LG app browsing thing. Haven't really played with it other than browsing themes.
So far I love the phone. Out of 2017 phones I have used the HTC U11 and Essential Phone I like the V30 best of those 3. My biggest complaint is I just wish you could at least disable the LG bloatware apps so they can't start up. Maybe there is a special way to do it aside from rooting the device and going that route.
Hope this helps anyone considering the V30

Yep. This method works on G6, so it should work on V30 also, be careful on what you disable, you could potentially brick the device.
BTW any display problems? And what variant did you buy?
Thanks! As for the variant, I have the AT&T 64gig one. There are a few AT&T apps, all can be disabled. I actually use a few of them. And no display problems that I have seen. I think the display is one of the best parts of the device.

Awesome overview :good: Although I already ordered v30 (black, 64gb) from South Korea, it was still nice to read, especially regarding the screen/size. I am not a fan of 18:9 in general since native support is still behind (cropped, zoomed videos), but I like what LG does - basically putting 18:9 screen in a more like 16:9 frame.. this makes it look much better than sausage-style s8/s8+/note8.
Here’s my V30+ first impressions. Will do a deep dive on the camera and audio soon.

Interesting review. Where did you get your B&O branded V30+ in UK? I thought they only had the V30? Did you get it from Italy or elsewhere?
I watched your full YouTube review and I agree people are selling the camera on this phone short. Interesting that all your friends chose the LG V30+ pictures over the Pixel 2 XL pictures. That's one reason I'm not really going to mess with the Pixel camera port.

Thanks. You’re right. UK only gets standard V30. Wondamobile supplied the V30+. The Pixel 2 will take better pics , but like everything it depends on the scene. I was out this morning with my Canon & V30+ and will get a post up next week with the results.
Ok. Audio review now done on the LG V30 covering speaker, Bluetooth, wired and type c. Over a dozen headphones used too.

I'm on my second Sprint lg v30 plus. Had to exchange the first one due to digitizer issues. On one side of the screen. It only responded to taps. My luck I guess.. Overall I like the device. It's light, fast and has a nice design. The camera sucks tho compared to my s8+ especially in low light. Not a bad camera but no where near the pixel 2 or Samsung phones. Was going to get the note 8 but I doubt that will ever get twrp. Hopefully this device gets root and twrp

I know there is a thread on the V30 forums that are more biased towards the V30, I am curious to see what the Pixel guys have to say. I am torn between the two right now. I'm on Verizon so I got the unlocked Pixel XL 2 Unlocked on preorder but the V30 is the Verizon version which is locked. I dont know if i plan on ever putting custom roms on it but i like the option to if I want to.
As awesome as the v30 looks and on paper, I cannot live with lgs skin, it's hideous ?
To me it depends on how important an up to date pure Android experience is to you. The v20, for example, is still running 7.0, so the LG updates are a bit slow. I prefer the quad dac and headphone jack on the v30, but the software ranks higher on my wish list.

Yeah, I've never owned a LG phone until I picked up the V30 last week to try it out. Loving the feel and experience with it so far. Never have I gotten this good of battery life on a phone either. 4 hours of SOT and still at 35%. I use Messenger/FB/Snapchat which are all hogs and this thing is handling it no problem. I have to go into a verizon store and see what the pixel feels like in hand. I love the idea of stock android with updates when they come out because I know I wont ever be able to root and toss on roms on my V30 cause its Verizon.
I posted in the V30 vs Pixel 2XL thread over on the V30 forum. But since I'm typically one to sway towards Nexus/Pixel devices, I'll give my opinion here.
As you can see from my signature, it's not like me to venture away from the pure Android experience. And I was very excited to see what the 2nd generation of Pixel phones had to offer. However, I must admit that I am disappointed with what Google put out this year. I've decided to go with the V30 and it arrives Monday.
To start, my recent test switch from the Pixel XL to the Galaxy S8 (about 4 months ago now) has been surprisingly great. Sure, TouchWiz is no "Pure Android", but I've found the S8 to be extremely fast and hasn't missed a beat for me. So I've learned first hand that you can still have excellent performance on a non-Pixel/Nexus phone.
I've also gotten hooked on wireless charging. I have a Qi wireless charger on my night stand and one in my office. My relatives have all seemingly adopted the most current Samsung and LG phones and all have multiple QI chargers in their homes, as well. So I've been able to fully adopt wireless charging in my daily life. In fact, my OEM USB C charger is still sitting in the original packaging, unused.
Now that I've experienced how convenient wireless charging is, I honestly could not imagine going back. So the lack of wireless charging in the Pixel 2 XL was a serious Downer for me.
This week I was able to compare the V30 and 2 XL side by side in my local Verizon store. This really helped solidify the V30 for me. Side by side the 2 XL's top, bottom and side bezels look enormous compared to the V30 (and the S8 for that matter). The 2 XL's bezels make the screen appear smaller than it does on the V30 while also making the phone feel notably larger in the hand than the V30. Which is annoying because the V30 is already a relatively large phone.
In addition, the user interface on the V30 is very fluid and smooth. Easily as fast as the 2XL, from my quick 5 minute comparison. I actually like LGs take on Android with their latest skin. And if I get sick of it, I can quickly install a Pixel theme with Nova and mirror the Pixel user interface exactly.
In fact, after using pure Android phones for so long, I'd even go as far as to say that the user interface on the 2 XL is boring. Oreo feels the same as Nougat, which feels the same as Marshmallow. Sure it's fast but it's almost too simple and feels the same as it has the past 2+ years.
I know many will disagree but at this point I feel that the pure Android experience has grown tired, stale and featureless. The little tweaks and features that LG and Samsung have added with they're skins are actually quite great and have progressed Android much further than stock Android has over the past couple of years.
However, with all that said, both are great phones and I don't think you can truly go wrong either way. It just depends on what you are looking for. If you are one to root and flash kernels/ROMs, the decision for you is easy. But for me, my days of rooting are behind me and the 2 XL is slightly too large and is missing a few too many little features to justify the price point over the V30.
Yeah, I had my sights on the V30, still do, to be honest. However, at the end of the day, quick updates from Google is where it's at and the P2 phones are getting three years of them (although I am honestly likely to upgrade in a year or two).
Having said that, when the V30 drops in price, I will definitely consider picking one up as a backup. I love the idea of a HiFi DAC and the second wide angle camera. I just can't stay away from pure Android for my main driver.

I guess the V30 is like a Pixel 2xl with LG skin, Bloat, Expandable Memory, Ear Bud Jack, 2 year warranty promo, slippery back, ( I handled on @att) different audio and camera hardware.

Yea, they aren't that much alike from what I see. Similar maybe, but that's about it. Pretty much a coincidence that the P2 XL and V30 were released at the same time. That's not a bad thing and nothing implied about either. Both awesome phones. I can't give up that update on the 1st Monday of the month.

Yea I had the Pixel XL, sold it and went back to an iPhone just for battery life because my Pixel XL wasnt getting more than 3 hours of SOT, and then traded the iPhone for an s8 + $200 on Craigslist. So i've been rocking the s8 for a couple months now and I can agree that its gotten a lot better than it use to be. Its my first Samsung that i've actually given a try since my Note 4 that I had and hated. Needless to say I hate that they dont get the updates but as you have said in your post, is the updates worth the look/features of another phone right now. I watch quite a bit of content on my phone without headphones so the stereo speakers would be nice but after having the s8 and no bezels (I know its not a huge thing but I like a sexy looking phone) it will be hard to go back to ones with a lot of bezel. The V30 is just perfect, I'm not a fan of the s8 curved edges as sometimes you wanna touch something along the edge and just cant get it. Only gripe on the v30 has been the camera which Verizon is sending me out another unit because they think its faulty. Last night I had 4 hours of SOT and still 35% left which is the best i've ever had on an Android phone. I use messenger/facebook/snapchat etc so I kill batteries fast and this thing just handles it like its nothing. I've never owned an LG phone but this thing might have sealed the deal for me. I still have my 2XL on order and when I receive my replacement V30 I should receive the 2XL before my 14 day return period is up so I can use both side by side not in a store having someone breath down my back for a sale.

You can just put another skin on top. Afaik the hardware is nearly the same on both phones (except camera) so maybe there will be also a smooth bugfree aosp rom for the v30 too.
Tbh I also looking forward to the Mate 10 presentation tomorrow, because Huawei is making the best UI from all skin androids regarding performance.
So maybe I just get a Mate10 and put pixel / nova launcher on it, instead going with the pixel 2 xl.
I preordered Pixel 2 xl (release in germany in 15.11.17) but if the mate 10 has more advantages i would go with huawei this year.
Is the LGV30 rootable? The latest update thing from pixel phones can be solved if the phone is rootable...
After leaving the gym this morning, I decided to poke my head back into the Verizon store next door to spend some more time doing a hands on side-by-side comparison.
In playing with both phones, I started taking some observations made by others into account, as well. One thing that I must admit is very cool, is the ability to squeeze the 2 XL to open Google Assistant. One of my concerns with this was whether squeezing the phone would lift a full coverage tempered glass screen protector. I am concerned that the addition of a TPU case, paired with a full coverage screen protector, would be an issue with this because the front edges of the TPU case would likely push into the screen protector whenever you activated the assistant. This could potentially lift the screen protector around the edges, which would get annoying. But the reality of this concern is yet to be seen.
The other thing others mentioned was just how ugly the built in LG dialer and messages apps are. I spent time trying to make a call in the LG dialer and the built in messages and have to agree that both those apps provide a very ugly experience. And since LG/Samsun make it next to impossible to fully replace the dialer/messages apps, it's something you'd have to live with in one way or another. Going back to the built in dialer and messages apps on the 2 XL were a breath of fresh air.
In addition, this time around I decided to test the speakers on each phone. I've gotta say, the front facing stereo speakers on the 2 XL are pretty spectacular. Especially when directly compared to the V30 and my S8. The bottom speaker on the V30 and S8 sound very "raspy" and hollow, in comparison. Plus, those bottom facing speakers don't get nearly as loud and are easy to accidentally cover with your finger. For my testing I used the Youtube app to test Marquees Brownlee's Pixel 2 XL YouTube review video and then the "Imagine Dragons - Believer" video, to give me an idea of how music and normal web content would sound. The front facing speakers on the 2 XL truly put the S8 and V30 to shame. At just 50% volume the 2 XL speakers were as loud as the V30 and S8 speakers were at full volume. And the overall sound from the 2 XL was much more "full". I suppose that's to be expected but I was surprised by just how big the difference is.
Admittedly, the front facing speakers truly have me back to considering the 2 XL, since I do spend a good amount of time consuming video/audio content on my phone, through the built-in speaker(s). However, I hate that I'd have to give up wireless charging and I still think the bezels on the 2 XL are ugly compared to the V30. Plus, in trying to picture 3 months down the road, when the initial "new toy" excitement wears off, I'm now considering whether or not I'd prefer to have the 2 XL's inevitably great dev community to fall back on to mess around with. Needless to say, the decision has grown more difficult for me....
DAmn this is why I posted a thread on this. I didn’t see this one. The screen and overall feel of the V30 plus the dual camera makes me want the V30. The updates and speakers plus google goodies makes me want the pixel. I want a really beautiful screen and don’t want so feel like I have a tiny screen because of the pixel speakers. Man this is harder than I thought

I've made an interesting decision, for now. I went ahead and pre-ordered the 2 XL. In addition, I have JUMP! On-Demand with T-Mobile. I'm going to use that to trade my S8 in for the V30 when the local store near me gets their V30 stock this week (hopefully tomorrow). So I'll get up to 14 days to play with the V30 as a daily driver. This will either lead me to canceling my 2 XL order before it ships or turning the V30 in for one of their super cheap phones to have as a backup to the 2 XL.
....or maybe I'll just keep both and let this indecision linger for months to come.

Yeah thats what I'm doing right now, got the v30 and love it besides the camera like i said, somethings wrong with it. Sending me a replacement and i get the new 15 days added on so it'll line me up to give them both a try for like 3-4 days together until the v30 would need to go back. The 27th cant come fast enough. Gonna go to the other 2 verizon stores in town tomorrow and see if I can get to play around with them since the one i went to today was "broke"
I made a list of advantages of both phones over on the V30 forum, which has been updated an added to, since . Here goes:
Pro V30
Headphone jack and DAC (not sure I'll be able to appreciate the latter with $100-headphones and spotify, though)
Sleeker design (but it'll live in a case anyways)
Smaller bezels
Smaller and lighter
Probably a tad cheaper
AOD seems to be more useful, incl. controls
Qi wireless charging
Higher IP 68 rating (even WITH 3.5mm headphone jack)
dual cameras -- one with f/1.6 and one with a wide angle lens
Pro P2XL
Better overall camera (esp. if you don't use manual mode)
Better low light/high dynamic range pics
Pure Android, no bloatware
Faster updates, esp. monthly security updates
Purportedly better support than LG
No breakable, smudgy glass back
RGB led
front-facing stereo speakers (the one thing the LG V30 doesn't have)
I am leaning towards the P2XL. One reason is that I’m not a big content creator (definitely not going to dive into manual photo/video modes), the other is that while the V30 may be the overall better package today, the P2XL will get better for a long time, especially once Android P drops, which will probably take LG at least six months to implement.

I’m in the same boat. I have decided to just wait on my Pixel2XL it’s def the better phone and def better for me
After a full 24 hours with my V30, I've already decided that when my 2 XL arrives, I'll be returning the V30 to T-Mobile.
The main draws for me toward the V30 were wireless charging and the smaller form factor/bezels. In addition, while I understand the headphone jack is becoming an outdated "feature", I do still prefer it for the sole purpose of quickly plugging some headphones in when a client calls me. This happens multiple times each day so I do find it convenient. Powering on and pairing a set of bluetooth headphones would likely lead to me missing calls from clients.
I truly wanted to love this V30, but so far it's been nothing but disappointment.
1) I'm already experiencing notable lag (as others in the V30 forum have pointed out) when opening the app drawer in Nova Launcher and scrolling through various apps like Instagram, Facebook, Chrome and even LG's own LG SmartWorld theme app. I've performed all the steps others recommended to fix it (i.e. enabling GPU rendering, and turning animation scaling to .5x). However, the lag/stuttering remains. Rebooting solves it for a couple of hours but then it comes right back.
2) Wifi connection with the V30 is considerably worse than it was on my Galaxy S8 and my previous Pixel XL. My office is in the very front of the house and the router is near the back of the house. Nonetheless, my S8 and Pixel XL were both able to acquire 3-4 signal bars and get 50mbps+ download speeds in the office. The V30 hovers between 0 and 2 bars and never achieves anything more than 5mbps. It's so bad that I'd be better off not using Wifi with the V30 in the front office.
3) 4G signal strength seems to have similar issues. At my gym my S8 and Pixel XL always had full 4G bars and great download speeds. My V30 hovers around 1-2 bars and Spotify songs are always pausing to buffer. This was never an issue with my previous two phones.
4) I've already found myself accidentally covering the bottom facing speaker while watching videos. Admittedly, this was an issue for me with the S8 and original Pixel XL, as well. This has me completely re-thinking those front facing speakers on the 2 XL. When I did my side by side comparison of the 2 XL and V30 in the Verizon store, the front facing speakers on the 2 XL blew me away with their performance, compared to the V30 and S8.
I'll have to live with the larger bezels and lack of wireless charging with the 2 XL. And I'll have to figure out a bluetooth headphone solution while in my office. But my immediate experience with the V30 has been bad enough that it's only made me more excited to get my hands on the 2 XL in the next couple of weeks.
EDIT: Add Feedly to the list of apps with obnoxious stuttering issues. Oh and the Google keyboard K
started randomly failing to recognize finger swipe gestures, forcing me to resort to tap-to-type.
There is something seriously wrong with this LG software. It's making me miss my S8, at this point. ?

Ouch, sorry you had that bad of an experience with it... Only "downside" i've had with the v30 in the week i've been using it is my wifi disconnects all the time randomly and I have an Orbi Mesh wifi system at home so i'm never more than 15-20 ft from a router/satellite, and the Camera is meh on the backside. Its been buttery smooth for me for the week but I've been in the boat where people say the same thing I am saying and mine lagged like whoa. I am excited for the Pixel 2 XL though, I wish I had patience to hold out for the Panda one but I think i'll just order up a white bottom dbrand skin and toss that on and go reverse
TL;DW:
"It's like a dream come true": It has a great software experience, far superior compared to the one in the G7 ThinkQ. Apps open faster and it's more fluid in general.
LG still hasn't disclosed whether this phone will be released globally or not and at what price, although Canada is a confirmed market. One thing is certain: in the words of LG, this is a midrange device. Expect to be priced accordingly (400-700 USD)
Key differences between the G7 One and G7 ThinQ:
* The most important difference is that it runs stock android, since the phone is part of the Android One program. This means that it'll get 2 years of regular updates (Android 9.0 Pie update is confirmed for all Android One devices) plus 1 year extra of security updates.
* Another difference is its design and build. The G7 One features a black matte glass back that is much easier to grip as well as aluminum sides that match the rest of the body, instead of stainless steel sides like on the ThinQ.
* It only features the regular 16mpx f1.6 camera, not the wide angle one and the camera app doesen't have manual controls either. On the bright side, images have a lot less image processing in comparison.
* It has a Snapdragon 835, rather than the ThinQ's 845.
* It has 4 GB of RAM instead of 6 GB.
* It doesen't have wireless charging.
* This version is running Android 8.1, whereas the reviewer's ThinQ is still running 8.0.
Specs that stay the same way:
* 6.1 inch IPS display, 32bit HiFi Quad DAC, BoomBox speaker, fingerprint scanner, dedicated Google Assistant button, IP68 water and dust resistance, 3000 mAh battery, Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0.
What do you think about the G7 One? Would you buy it? Is it better or worse than the G7 ThinkQ?

Well, I was interested until I saw the price.
Hi, i just got it from koodo here in Canada for 435$ total. I had a 125$ rebate cause I'm a long term customer, but that also implies that it's a 560$ phone. At that price I think we have a deal on our hands.

Interesting. That's less than 430 USD. It seems that currently price is flowing between 400-600 USD.
If it's not too much to ask, could you do a quick review about the phone? Namely about things that the reviewer didn't cover such as battery life, quad DAC, speaker performance, etc?

Hi,
I've had the phone for about 2 weeks now. As for battery life, I cant complain. But I'm a light user. I'm getting a full 2 days of use between charges. Where I can provide some useful feed back is the speaker and dac. For the speaker, i would compare it to an ipad, maybe a little louder. It does fill a small room quite well if all you want to do is have background music. I'm an enthusiast "audiophile" so i wont be using it for this much, but its good to get the kids dancing and such. Obviously there is little to no base, but it does get surprisingly loud.
Ok, for the DAC, this surprised me. Its drives my 50 ohm HD558's with ease. The soundstage is broad and clear allowing you to listen to each instrument independently. There is lots of definition in lower frequencies. A really great listening experience. Its like having one of the DragonFly, or FIO, etc. USB DAC/AMPs built right into the phone. Plus, so far im only listening to 320kbs spotify downloads. It supports flack, etc. For someone who listens to lots of music, this is a very nice surprise. I was expecting some "bass boost bull****" but no, this is a legit DAC for listening to music the way it was recorded. For fun, I plugged in my HD6xx and its clearly not powerful enough to drive 300 ohms adequately. But no phone or normally priced ubs dac/amp can. So for the 435$ CAD i paid, i feel i got some great value here given the phone's performance as a music player.
Other thoughts, screen is great. Colors are good, viewing angles are great. Nice and bright. Back is a little slippy for my tastes. Camera app right now is bare bones, reds are over saturated but it works just fine. No "portrait" mode but thats coming apparently... If you want photography, get a DSLR. But if you XDA guys can get the google camera working on it... that would be nice Its plenty fast at opening and navigating apps.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your input, really appreciated!
I'm really tempted by this phone. I can have it on a Koodo tab for 360$ which is a good deal.
I'm looking at the MIA2 as well, but this phone seams superior in almost every spec except the storage.
The only thing that makes me hesitate is that the xda forum is almost empty :/
I've had a weird experience with my LGG3 also (It was great for the 1st year and then it became really unstable, and network was always disconnecting), so i'm also a bit hesitant towards LG.
After multiple weeks how is the battery life ? and the camera ?
I get 24-hour battery life through my average use. A couple of phone calls, lots of browsing, some YouTube videos. Not sure of the SOT, but coming from my 3 year old Moto X2, which was never great at 2300 mAh, this LG 3000 is much better.
Can the bootloader be unlocked easily? LG phones typically don't make it easy for Canadians, not sure if Android One changes that for this phone.
Thanks!

I don't think it's possible
#August 7th is the launch date if latest rumours are to be believed.
- What do you think about the rumored pinhole front facing camera? Looking at the small size of it, is it going to be inferior to the one in the S10+?
- The rumoured back cameras design looks a lot like what we have seen in several other smartphones. It does not look appealing to me and expected a better design.
- No hardware bixby button seen so far looking at trustworthy sources/renders. If it's real, it would feel like a fresh breath of air. Hope they all together killed it and not keeping a software-only bixby.
- Exynos 9820 or 9825? Hope the latter.
- 25W fast charging or something like 45W? Hope it's 45 but I'm kinda sure it'll be 25.?
#Meanwhile Vivo goes INSANE with 120W super fast charging to charge 4000 mAh in 13 minutes:
- No headphobe jack it seems, not that something I care much, but a lot will be furious for sure.
- Feels good to know about AMD & Samsung's GPU licensing deal, but it does not mean we will see Adreno GPU in Exynos SoCs so soon, and nothing tastes bitter than continuing with Mali GPUs.
- Courtesy to IceUniverse's tweet, Note 10's "chin" is very narrow and hence no speaker grooves on the forehead, meaning that the flagship Sound on Display(SoD) technology will replace the traditional speaker. This is a welcome move . SoD in LG G8 for example, produces fuller, louder and equally good sound like traditional stereo ones.
- Though improved with consecutive updates, the FP sensor on the S10/S10+ still struggles at times, hope we see a drastic change in the second gen sensor.
- UFS 3.0 for sure, fast AF, sweet to have irrespective of how much of a difference it actually makes in real world..
- I wish the pinhole was at the side. Sticking it in the middle is distracting and also wastes the space either side.
- I like the camera design on the rear, it looks more natural when you are taking landscape oriented shots.
- No Bixby? No problem. Look I have tried very hard to like Bixby, I have defended it many times but in all honesty it sucks. The button is a pain as I constantly accidentally press it when gripping the phone.
- I think the processor speed regardless of which version will be absolutely more than enough. I don't get hyped up about speed anymore, I haven't had performance issues with Samsung flagships in a very long time. The latest version is nice but I am not too fussed.
- Superfast wireless charging would be nice but it's not dealbreaking.
- I do want a headphone jack! I do not see the point in removing it just to be like all the others. If they do remove it I hope they ship with some decent wireless buds.
- A GPU upgrade is a long time coming.
- I like the idea of Sound on Display for making calls, so long as it doesn't make the external speakers sound crap or too quiet when playing music or video.
- I definitely think they will improve the fingerprint scanner. My S10+ is hit and miss and seems like it's in beta. I am sure this will be improved.
- UFS 3.0 ... I agree it might not be worth the excitement but nice to have.
I hope they stick to the more subtle curves on the edges and corners. As much as I like the look of the curves on my S10+ they aren't as comfortable/practical as the Note 9.
I hope we still have a MicroSD card slot and they add wireless power share. I also want to see more attention paid to low light photography and an increase in optical zoom.
Regardless, as a Note Nutter I will be buying a Note 10. I don't want to break the chain of Notes owned since 2011

Quite liked how you wrote.
Unfortunately, we will probably see Type C AKG earphones bundled with, and not wireless buds as per this tweet:
https://twitter.com/mweinbachXDA/status/1142429182431039488?s=19
We are already seeing massive low light improvements in the S10's after the updates :
https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s10-camera-review-updates/
Note 10 should make it even better.
Sammy will probably not pay much attention to more optical zoom capabilities for now, but with 3 variable apertures being rumored, we might see sharper images in moderate lighting conditions due to the addition of f/1.8
https://mobile.twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1141608857220681728?ref_src=twsrc^tfw
Maybe they will offer the earbuds on pre-orders (fingers crossed) But whilst I don't use the headphone jack very much I really hate this band wagon jumping that OEM's started to do when Apple removed it unnecessarily because (cough) they were brave.
The rumour mill does suggest that the Note 10 might have a 5x Optical Zoom, though it might be more destined to coincide with the next year's A-Series launches, considered Samsung's test-bed models of late. I also read that their newly developed 64 megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor is not going to make it to the Note 10.
Which leads me on to this:
What's sad is that the Galaxy Note series was always considered Samsung's top jewel in the crown. If a new innovation was being pushed out you would find it on the latest Note. Now it seems that all the excitement is taken away once the S - Series phones are released (and in some cases the Galaxy A-Series) so owning a Note doesn't give you the bragging rights you once enjoyed. A good example is that I used to love the larger screen size offered by a Galaxy Note but now my S10+ is the same size as the Note 9. Camera innovations are often re-ported from the S to the Note, along with new bio-metrics and screen technology. So aside from the S-Pen, what do we really get for all that extra cash?
I upgrade each year all the same, because I have always considered the best Android phone each and every year is the Samsung Galaxy Note. But seriously, if the boundaries between the Galaxy S and the Note becoming more and more blurred my passion for this device will probable dwindle.

a new article appeared on gsmarena where it leaks new note 10 cases and it's clearly showing that it will not have a headphone jack. personally I don't see a reason to buy it, even though I have wireless headphones I also use the wired ones at work and for the moment I can't part myself from a very useful feature.
To be honest, the Note 10 seems too similar to the S10 5G. I do prefer the centered front camera and the S-Pen is nice, but is it worth losing a headphone jack and likely having a smaller battery? Also, we see a rumored A90 without a notch or punch, but with high end specs.
Samsung has created too many models. They likely could have saved money and cut costs by combining the 5G and Note models. They could differentiate them more by using different aspect ratios. Not everyone likes the 19:9 or 19.5:9 aspect ratios. Phones are getting tall and unwieldy and a bezel-less 18:9 or 18.5:9 phone would be welcome.

Yup. It doesn't look aggressive in the pics...
And I'm not liking the punch - "pin"hole front cam. The "capsule" in the s10+ distracts, this one will too, but it's too late for me to whine.
Eagerly waiting on the official details but so far dont like the pin hole camera hole, the camera hole on the s10+ looks much better and like u can add the battery icon colors.
If they remove the Bixby button that would suck because now since u can remap I use that all day every day for my Nest cameras on demand. I mean u could use google to open apps quickly button if its constantly listening to wake up i found that drains ur battery. It's great though if u have smart displays at home and all.
Yeah, looks like I will sit this one out. The note 9 is going to be the new note4 . The notch is a deal breaker and so is the lack of headphone jack. The back camera placement is fine tho. I too ,miss the days of the Note being the flagship, and all about business, but nows it's just the Galaxy S with a pen. Some people may think it's being silly, but I refuse to pay north of 1000 bucks for something that isn't exactly what I want. I also thought there would be more Note fans who share the same view, but it looks like I am in a small minority of folks who hate the notch and love the headphone jack. I now know how the fans of the ir blaster felt.

While it sad to see the headphone jack go, I don't find the audio all that good out of the Note 9 headphone jack. It's OK but nothing special.
I use a Bluetooth adapter which gives far better sound.
So I'm not too bothered about the Headphone jack going.

You know what's funny about your post? I legit just told my wife about 2 days ago I would have happily stayed with my note 4. I had so many accessories, giant batteries like zero lemon. It was truly decked out. My last got ridiculously smashed though
This stupid ''Infinity O'' thing in the middle of the Display on Top is the only reason to wait better on Note 11 or 12. Im no Fan with this Notch/InfinityO things overall. Anyway my Note 9 is atm a beast & i guss it will be a beast for the next 2-3 years. Hopefully Sammy managed this Displayhole till this day when i feel a need to upgrade.
Same here I'm staying with the note 9 for a few years
