First Impressions, and initial Issues?

Hardware is beautiful and working great thus far, coming from a blackberry z10.
issues:
- noticed the best buy demo units are slightly snappier and quicker vs the verizon one that was released
- spigen cases i tried covered up thr mic holes at bottom by charger so need to change cases now (reported in another thread)
- i config'd my 5 non-gmail email accounts (hotmail, outlook, yahoo, etc) and noticed my battery was draining like crazy, 50% gone in like an hour, phone was super hot, and then i realized ghe inbox for all accounts was not syncing and phone keeps retrying constantly. after thorough testing, the issue was that if "group by email conversations" was setup for each account under account advanced settings, once i disabled this for all my accounts, the device was flying, no hot phone, and battery was great

1. I am surprised Wiz is not the usual mess and I am not compelled to go to Nova yet.
2. Radio reception for data is the same as the S3 and S4. Same high battery drain and hottish device in weak signal areas. Good though in medium or better signal areas.
3. Display is great, but still would rather have a great 1080p for battery more battery life.
4. Audio output is low from the audio jack, but Poweramp's gain increase fixes this.
5. Sound quality from the audio jack is good.
6. The speaker is okay, but could be better.
7. Charge time with included charger is fast.
8. Performance is as great.

I would like to agree with everything above and add:
1. Switched to Nova Launcher and is a bit snappier.
2. Not sure how much faster this phone is compared to my LG G3 real world.
3. I must say the N4 stock UI is faster than the LG G3 stock UI.
4. Samsung should really take a page from HTC One M8 or the LG G3 for audio sound quality and output. Both of those phones smoke my N4 especially in volume loudness.
Using Neutron Player and Westover W40s with all lossless recordings. Definitely need to crank up the preamp a bit.
5. Feature set is Awesome so far.

agree note 4 stock ui smokes g3 stock ui
Everything is a positive for me but recent app button (wish it was menu on one tap and recent button was long press on home button hopefully root will fix) and screen wake for text msgs besides that its perfect

any bluetooth issues? Or is it just my accessories (jawbone speaker, car stero)--doesn't even see device

minor issues
I'm finding that the audio jack is really finnicky with different types of headphones. Some don't work at all. I've seen in the store some are compatible with Apple or Android, is there a way to tell the difference by looking at the plug?
Also I agree that this phone looks incredible, however when looking at the black version, if you look inside the USB port it does appear to still be plastic with some sort of metal coating. This is also evident if you remove the s pen and look at the back case. It is a whitish gray color. The antenna lines through the sides of the case are also white where the bevel is on the front and back. It doesnt bother me at all, just something that I noticed.
One last thing is that on certain videos on YouTube I don't have the option for 1440p. I know on my tab s I had to go back to an earlier version of youtube to get this. Does anyone else have this option for videos on YouTube that are 1440p on their computers or tablets?

Are any of you getting extreme lag with Facebook and instagram?

Cons:
1. The stock launcher is slow. Nova is tons better.
2. Had to turn off all those animations within the developer menu. Device is much speedier now.
3. Glass protectors shows this halo effect because of the 2.5 glass. Wish they just left the screen completely flat.
4. Fingerprint scanner works great with my index fingers but not my thumbs. But once lollipop hits I won't be using the fingerprint scanner for unlocking purposes. A Bluetooth or NFC device will work nicely.
5. Root on the Verizon model may come to Kitkat but it might be near impossible on Lollipop.
6. And where the heck is Gear VR?
Pros:
1. The display quality is better vs Note 3
2. Touchwiz actually looks nice when it comes to the settings menu.
3. The IR blaster strength is so much better vs the Note 3. I don't have to point straight at my devices.
4. The build is a clear step up. Feels super solid.
5. Best camera I've used in a smartphone.
6. Gear VR is the primary reason for upgrading to the Note 4.
The 3 apps I recommend for this phone is:
AcDisplay = Moto X like notifications
Gravity Screen = Turn phone on and off without the power key. Wave hands over the proximity sensor to see AcDisplay and place phone face down to turn off.
Smart Remote = Unleash the true potential of the IR blaster.

Yes I get the the lag on Facebook as well

Same here. Mine came with scratches on the bezel right out of the box. Might just be exchanging for the turbo or getting a new note 4. Still in my 14 day return period! ?

asides from technical issues, physical issues included from other posts
- not that many cases have the proper mic holes for VZW N4
- most glass screen protectors are causing halo effects, manufacturers still working on them

seriously!? glad im not the only one. i am returning for the refund (minus $35 restock fee) and probably going to buy dev ed note but we will see. going to go in tomorrow or this weekend when turbo is out. i have until nov 5th

Yea, I watched the Verizon employee take it out of the box and immediately hand it right to me. The first thing I noticed was the scratch on the top lol. It really disappointed me. Anyways I hope the turbo is in the stores tomorrow so I can make a quick exchange. Does it take a couple days to do a even exchange? I bought my phone from a Verizon retail store.

wow i dont know how mine got it. it came off all in my case and it is a mess. and i am just returning for refund. i havent even opened factory battery yet lol and they should exchange in store no problem

yup im just going to go in and not say a word about anything just say i want to return too many good phones right now i dont know what to get and check out turbo while i am there lol

My wife and I both got new note 4s this weekend. I wanted to wait for a black one (BB only had white), but yesterday was the last day to get the $200 trade in on my ancient Evo. Overall, it's been a good experience. I noticed that I have a bit of a gap on the right side of my white note 4, but it is less of a gap than I had on my old GS3. I got a case that covers the gap, anyway.
Things I love:
1. The spen is very cool. There's so much that I can do with it, and am still figuring it all out.
2. I've never had a phone that had such good radios. Places that I normally struggle with 3g get me a couple of bars of 4g. My GS3 was terrible with the radios. Really, just terrible. I'm not sure if there is another current phone that has radios this good.
3. The screen really is a thing of beauty. Pictures are sharp, and colors are bright and vibrant.
4. The build quality is solid. The phone feels great. The buttons all have solid click feedback. Serious thought went in to the aesthetics of this phone. I've never had a complaint about that on any Samsung phone that I've had or used.
Issues that I'm having:
1. The wifi is terrible. I have a Netgear Nighthawk router. I've played with the settings a bit, and nothing that I've done has made a difference. None of my other electronic devices are having a problem. Well, except for my wife's note 4.
2. There is an ever so slight greenish tint at the very bottom of the screen that's only visible on white screens. Sometimes I am not even sure if I'm seeing it. My wife does not see it at all. I do tend to be picky about screens, and will willingly return an electronic device because of screen issues. It's most noticeable on lower brightness, and not noticeable on full brightness.
3. The viewing angles on this aren't that great. Mine is actually better than my wife's. If I tilt her phone even a bit, it starts to look greenish. Mine will do it as well, but it takes a more extreme angle.
4. The colors ARE amazing, except for white. White isn't really well represented on either of our phones, unless the brightness is cranked up.
5. Chalk this one up to personal preference. The phone is huge! The GS3 is so much smaller than this. I've read a lot of comments that say that you just need to give it a bit of time to get used to the size. I've only had it for a day, so it remains to be seen if I will adapt.
These seem like a lot of complaints, but really, they're minor. For the most part, this is a solid phone with a TON of cool features. I've been looking at all of the phones for quite a while, and there simply isn't another phone with this array of neat stuff.
The thing is, I feel like there really aren't any phones out there that as good as this one. Looked at the iPhone like I do every time my contract is up, and there's really nothing new there. I really have to laugh at NFC that can only be used for Apple Pay. The droid turbo seems ok, but looks a bit dated. And it's sort of a fat phone, though it's much more pocketable than the Note. I also spent some time looking at the G3, and just didn't like it. I'm not even sure why. Maybe it was the skin.
I am not sure what I'll end up doing with it, because I don't know what I'd get if I did return it. I don't want to exchange this one just for a perceived screen issue that might only exist in my mind and that I probably won't notice two weeks from now. Participating in a screen lottery only leads to madness, and I've been down that path before. My GS3 didn't have the most uniform screen, and I totally forgot about it. Because both of our Note 4s have wifi issues, I'm guessing that it's not hardware related.
I think what it comes down to is, can I adapt to the size?

I have a note 3, give it a few weeks, and the phone becomes "normal" size. I had issues with size when I first got my note 2.

No voice command to turn off the alarm clock?
I don't know if I just am unable to find it but have you guys figured out if there's a voice command to "STOP" the alarm clock? I loved it back when I was using my Note 2. I am pretty sure that this feature also existed on the Note 3. Did Samsung decide to take this feature out on the Note 4? It may not be a big deal but it still was such a convenient feature.

HTC Desire Eye mini review

So, I picked up a Desire Eye on launch day. I feel like I was one of the few people intrigued by this device when it was announced. Since then, it has received almost zero attention: Few reviews, no posts on XDA, very little buzz on the internet in general. So, if you're even remotely considering this device and want a little info, here's a personal perspective from someone who bought the phone.
Disclaimer: I have owned dozens of flagship phones over the last several years. I'm also quite a fan of Sense UI and HTC in general. I did not buy this phone for the front facing camera. I don't care about selfies, so I'm probably not the target audience. I really just wanted an M8 with a better camera.
Display
The display is probably my one gripe about the device so far. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it looks washed out to me. When I first turned it on in the store, it immediately looked dull. A lot of the HTC wallpapers and themes are a sort of pastel, so it's really hard to tell, but next to my iPhone 6 Plus, and even a Windows M8 in the store, it just doesn't look as vibrant as I'd expect. Compared to my Note 4, it looks positively depressing, but that's to be expected. That said, it does get plenty bright. I just wish I still had my M8 to compare it with because I swear the M8 had more contrast and vibrance.
Camera
My only real beef with the M8 was the camera, mainly the low megapixel count which made cropping nearly impossible. It also had trouble with exposure and focus. I was really hoping that they fixed that with this phone. I know it's not their flagship and is, in fact, marketed as mid range, but it's really just an M8 with a different build and cameras. I have taken quite a few photo samples and compared them online to the Z3 Compact, iPhone 6 Plus, OnePlus One, G3, and Note 4. There is definitely more detail and you can crop in much further than the M8, but it still gets soft when you do. I also noticed the same issues with exposure. If you're not careful about where you tap to focus, you'll get a blown out sky or dark subject. Focus is fast, but not always accurate. It sometimes blurs the subject instead of the background. Definitely not on par with the focusing systems found in the Note 4 and iPhone 6 Plus. Colors are good, if not great. They lean toward the warmer and more vibrant side, which I personally prefer. Overall, it's an upgrade over the M8 and on par with phones like the OnePlus One and G3, at least in my testing.
Build
I know a lot of people are fans of metal, but there are advantages and disadvantages to metal and plastic. The advantages here are water resistance and weight. This is a light phone and it feels good in the hand. Coming from my Note 4, it is significantly lighter and easier to hold. It's also fairly grippy. I don't feel the need for a case. My one complaint about build is the size. This thing is big. It's nearly as big as the iPhone 6 Plus and Note 4, which is kind of sad when you consider the 5.2" screen. Part of this is the 13mp front-facing camera. Part is the speakers, even though the grills are much smaller this time around. They still needed that blank "HTC" strip on the front for components and that adds to the overall size. The camera shutter button is very difficult to press. I only see using this thing under water. If you try to use it for normal pictures, you'll get blur because the phone will move when you try to press it. I find this to be a problem on a lot of phones with dedicated shutter buttons, but it's much more pronounced here.
Battery
My other primary concern with this phone was battery. It's the same internals as the M8 with a bigger screen and a smaller battery. While disappointing, so far it's not as bad as I expected. It seems to be about on par with the M8, though I'm not sure how. Standby time is pretty good (in my limited testing so far) and it doesn't drain horribly fast when the screen is on. Since HTC doesn't show screen on time and I had to install GSAM, I don't have any screen on results yet, but I will be testing that over the next few days.
Performance
This is the reason to get an HTC phone, in my opinion. Sense and stock Android are easily the fastest, best performing versions of Android, in my experience. But Sense brings some nice enhancements to the table that I think are worth it over stock Android. There's no lag or delay anywhere on the phone so far. Everything is fast and fluid. It makes my Note 4 look positively slow. Just the gallery lag on the Note 4 alone is enough to drive someone mad. HTC is doing it right. I'm actually a fan of Blinkfeed, too, though I know other people hate it. Since the introduction of Blinkfeed, I almost always end up putting a widget on my left most homescreen of every other Android phone that gives me a full page of news, though nothing quite compares to HTC's solution. I like their enhancements to the gallery, contacts, etc. Very nice overall experience.
Misc.
1. Minor annoyance, but the stock email client makes you tap to show images on every HTML email. Since I actually use it, it's kind of annoying. I wish they would at least give an option in the settings to "always show".
2. Some of the camera features are really need, like face merge and photo strip. I do miss slow motion video and 4k recording, though.
3. Internal storage is only 16gb. You have a little over 9 free out of the box. This is the only other con to this phone, in my opinion.
4. I'm a pretty big fan of the screen on gestures. I basically never have to use the power button. And now we can launch straight into the camera, too.
5. I received an update yesterday and it auto installed. There's no info anywhere on what it was. The phone just rebooted and installed with no warning.
6. There is a ton of bloatware on this thing (AT&T). Seriously, brace yourselves. It's even more insulting with only 16gb to start with.
7. Bootloader is unlockable at HTC Dev so, there's at least hope that we'll get root soon. The main issue will be S-Off, as usual. But I really only want/need root.
8. The front-facing speakers are every bit as good as you'd expect, despite the water resistant membrane and smaller grills. It's pretty impressive how small and unnoticeable they are.
Wrap Up
Overall, I really like the device. My main concerns are camera quality and battery life, which I will continue to test. I really like the user experience overall, though, and it's one of my favorite phones of the year. I don't think this phone is really getting the attention it deserves. Even the tech bloggers seem to be ignoring it. I hope this helps anyone who's on the fence about this phone and/or looking for more information.

Thanks for the review and photos. The camera was better than what I was expecting from the sensor HTC is using, to be honest. The only downside from what I've read in your review is the screen: while I don't like oversatured screens, I also don't appreciate "dark" screens (it hasn't to do with brightness, but with the white tone).
Regarding the speakers, I know you don't have a M8 to compare, but do you notice much of a difference between the devices?
Can you please confirm that it has MHL and it works?

For what it's worth, I held my One M8 side by side with a Desire Eye in store and compared the screens while displaying the same images and websites. They looked pretty much exactly the same to me other than a slight difference in size. Didn't think it looked dull. Of course, the lighting in AT&T was pretty harsh so it wasn't the best environment for comparison. Maybe you just got used to the super punchy over saturated colors of the Note 4?

Could you please state in which degree you can use the phone with one hand?
Would it feel closer to the use of a One M8/Galaxy S5/LG G2 or would it compare more to a One Plus One / Iphone 6 Plus (which is for me slightly to big).
The 5.2 inch of the LG G2 is of perfect size, but that phone had way smaller bezzels, so this is in fact something that scares me of the HTC desire EYE.

It's definitely closer to the OnePlus One or iphone 6 Plus size wise, but it is MUCH lighter, which does make it easier to handle with one hand. Unless you have gorilla hands, though, you definitely won't be able to reach all four corners of the screen with one hand.
It's tall, rather than wide.

I got the Desire EYE in the mail 2 days ago, it's a really good phone, really fast, takes nice pictures, overall I'm happy about it, the only downside about it is the internal storage, it has like 7 gb out of the 16 dedicated to the OS and stock apps... But other than that, really good phone!

To start off, I will say I am a big HTC fan. I talked about 7 people into buying the One M8 over the S5 this year. I love Sense, Blinkfeed and the snappiness of their devices. I have since sold my One M8 earlier this summer, around May, and have been jumping around to different devices. I strayed from the One M8 mostly due to the camera and the fact that I like to try the latest and greatest devices. I have been using an iPhone 6 since it launched. When I saw the Desire Eye was announced, I got excited. I was really hoping for an M8 Eye, which I think would have been the perfect smartphone for 2014, but this was almost as good. I picked one of these up on Friday at an AT&T store. The guy kind of looked at me funny when I said I wanted one, I don't think he was trained on the device or knew what it was. I didn't open it until Saturday night, but in the store, when playing with it, the first thing I said was, this screen looks washed out. I think it has something to do with the default theme, when I changed it back to one of the same Sense stock themes on the One M8, it didn't look as bad. It is something to do with that pink color they are using. I am torn on the device, it is like 2 steps forward, a couple steps back. I didn't like the first few indoor pictures without flash I took of my 3 month old daughter, so I switched back to the iPhone 6 yesterday because it was her baptism and I didn't want to miss any shots, or risk them coming out badly. One thing that Apple knows is how to make a camera that focuses fast and gives you good pictures. The Boom Sound is also a bit of a disappointment. The bass and clarity seems to be lacking compared to the M8. I played some Vevo music videos on the demo models in store. I am currently thinking about trying to find a second hand M8 Google Play Edition in mint condition (so I have full T-Mobile support for the $30 SIM I have for my play phone line), and keep either it or the Eye and my iPhone 6.

You mentioned no-slow motion (i had actually talked about this in the other thread) and the info i read was that it didn't have. However, i was just watching a video review of the desire eye and in the settings i noticed the slow motion icon and the review actually pressed it and it sayed it was slow motion (its an italian video, i actually looked it up to see the translation lol). It was in the camera interface under the " ... " icon and on the modes (it usually says auto) it has the slow motion icon/cartoon - Here is the video @ 11:45
Still no mention of 4k, so that is not from stock but maybe with a mod.

I don't see a slow motion option anywhere in the settings. The only video options are for the resolution (MMS, 1080, etc). One thing they did do right, though, is put the video record button back on the main interface full time next to the camera shutter button. They were crazy to ever take that away.
Quality is okay. It's about on par with the OnePlus One and G3, in my testing. Most of the shots I took were on an overcast day, so not the best testing environment, but overall I think it's acceptable. I think I'd still grab my Note 4 or iPhone 6 Plus if I was going somewhere to take a lot of pictures, but I don't feel like I'm carrying around a bad camera when I have this phone.

It was in the camera interface under the " ... " icon and on the modes (it usually says auto) it has the slow motion icon/cartoon - Here is the video @ 11:45
Still no mention of 4k, so that is not from stock but maybe with a mod.

Okay, I was totally wrong about slow motion. I just found the option. It was not where I expected, but I'm stoked to see that it's there!

Great Slow motion on htc is good, at least if its like on the m8. I think only htc and sony in Android lets you record 120fps and then edit what parts to slow down, which is how slow motion should be. Glad to see its there and websites like gsmarena should mention it and update the specs info with that.

Battery is really good for the capacity. Idle drain with my apps and setting was about 3%/hr. With the screen on, it does seem to lose battery pretty fast, but I was still able to get about 10-13 hours of use with around 3 hours screen time. That's not much worse than most of my other phones do, actually.
I would post screenshots, but I no longer have the phone. As much as I really liked it, I just couldn't live with the camera quality. I was really hoping for better. But if camera isn't your #1 priority, this is a great all around phone. Camera is definitely better than phones like the Moto X. I was just hoping for closer to Note 4/iPhone quality.

How do the camera quality and pictures compare to Samsung S4 or S5?

Initial thoughts on first weekend with my tmo V30

Ok, so I received my T-Mobile V30 Friday afternoon and have used it quite a bit since then. here are my highlights/low-lights so far.
Overall I really LOVE this phone. I've been knowing for a while that it would have just about all I wanted in a phone from physical size to features (minus stock android and quick updates). It will be a tough decision which to keep when the Pixel XL I pre-ordered arrives.
Physically
-Look and feel is fantastic.
-Great screen to body ratio
- size is the perfect mix of size and ease of use.
-Screen looks great! Not Samsung Note 8 great, especially in bright sunlight but in the top displays I've ever used. (coming from a note 8)
Software
-Scroll speed is disappointing. I find it moves slow and when I try to scroll fast in FB or even my google news feeds it stutters and is just not fluid.
-A big annoyance (besides the scrolling speed) for me was the auto brightness. LG really needs to have something like Samsung where you can set the brightness for a setting and not just full auto. Because they ALWAYS have my screen too dim. I was forced to download Lux which I should not have to do.
Camera
-Excellent camera but not on par with Pixel line or Samsung. Don't get me wrong, it is a great camera and in the sunlight it is fantastic but low light it does not do as well as Note 8. Video or Stills. But it is very adequate for my needs and I prefer having the wide-angle lens over the zoom lens any day.
-The one thing that really bothered me was shutter lag at times. Sometimes when I snapped a photo it was almost instant and others I had to wait a second or so. Long enough to think I might not of pressed the button. Not sure if others have had this issue but it is troublesome. It was not isolated to taking multiple photos fairly quickly either. Sometimes first shot.
Battery
-Battery is very good. Last night I went to sleep with 50% left and screen on time of 3 hours and 20 minutes. That, to me, was fantastic.
-I don't see any trouble with me getting a fully heavy use day out of this phone without charging.

How is reception? On my G6 is pretty bad...
Also, any display problems on low light and low brightness conditions?
For scrolling go to developer options and enable force gpu rendering, it should scroll better

Thanks, it did help the scrolling. Went from bad to acceptable. not sure what side effects that will cause elsewhere.
Reception has not been an issue this weekend but I use my phone more on weekdays so I'll see. I did get 1 or 2 fail/resend on text messages but that could be tmo also.
I use my phone before bed in the dark with it close to all the way dim. Either I don't know what to look for or it does not bother me. Either way I'm totally satisfied with it in low light.
However, I do wish it had the 1200 nits that the Note 8 has. Today at the pool it was difficult at times to take a photo and really see what I was taking a photo of at 100% brightness.

Thanks, I use it in that way too before going to sleep, it's one of the moments where I can play some games, this is way that display problem brothers me so much.
Now I'll wait for Europe price and relevant date, if it'll arrive at 799 euros in Vodafone stores I'll probably buy it.

The camera is above average just not quite as good as Pixel or Note 8. For selfies, if you set the skin tone and lighting effects to 0 then it is ok.
Here is an album. The colored balls, food duplicate shots are for comparison. (I deleted most of my comparison photos. Was done for personal comparison so no reason to keep them)
Use "info" to see the model number of the camera that took the photo. Easy if you have windows 10 and default photo viewer. (click info icon at top right)
The boy in the sand photos and the selfie of me and my wife are from today on the V30 and I had already packed up the Note 8 to sell on swappa.
Low light - just had a crack in the door with very little light coming into the room. Note blew the V30 away on this one.
Photos from LG that seem close then far are regular and wide angle lens.
All photos are on "auto" setting for both phones.

Have u seen the videos speed between note 8 vs v30? V30 was slower but my problem was with this was, just like the s8 plus. The v30 cannot keep app in the background and are constantly reloading. Finished the second round more than 1 minute behind the note 8. Having 6gb ram o. A non stock android js a must for me.
I was just like u but after the price. And everything um m get for just $130 more, spen, larger better screen, more ram. And hold its value better. I bought the note 8 2 days ago. Prettg happy so far.

My phone comes tomorrow and after reading several posts about it, I am considering a return. I went to the VZW store today to see it and everything about the look I like. I went into the camera to take some pics and I noticed right away that the shutter took way too long to take the shot. The odd thing about the camera is I had the G6 and it took great low light pics, even better than my S8+. One of the main reasons I wanted the V30. I'm worried now I will be giving my S8 back for a phone that isn't "better". I'm so tempted now to just buy the Pixel or wait and get the iPhone X. This sucks so bad. I was looking forward to the V30 and have no desire to get the Note 8.

Ooh so the S8 Plus isn't any better? Was considering that as well to save a little bit.. They have a $300 trade-in deal on all phones on Samsung's site, even goes towards 24 month financing.

You can't just turn off auto-brightness? I've done that in every LG phone, from G2 to G4 because yes, they make it too dim.
Have they disable manual brightness setting or something?

Actually quite impressive pictures -- and I'm glad you chose "auto" for these tests. Most of the time we take pictures, I'm really not going to mess with the settings. My wife especially will not. She went hiking with a friend last weekend through a forest with a waterfall, and while the pictures were nice I wish she had THIS camera. One shot was taken by a stranger to whom she handed her phone -- with her and the friend standing amidst the foliage, with the waterfall visible behind them. Adjusting settings just isn't going to be done in that situation, and she wouldn't know how.
Yes, it's nice to have settings you can adjust for long setup time, I appreciate LG adding that capability -- but let's be honest. 90% of the time it's about taking the picture quickly.
On the close-up colored balls comparison, I might give the Note the win, but barely. The V30 is very, very close.
On the french fries/granite counter wide shot, I prefer the V30 over the Note. The V30 wins on that one, to me.
Low light shots of the PC on the floor, yeah, the Note was cleaner, clearer. The Note had great focus and color of the baseboard and wall, as well as the PC.
But the outdoors shots of the V30 you have are great. Thank you for sharing.

1. I did not notice any scrolling lag on the Note 8 at all. It was pretty smooth. There was the lag after pressing home button or switching between apps like all galaxy devices but the Note is the most responsive phone Samsung has ever created.
2. Battery seems to be better on the V30. I could make it through the day on the note but I tried killing the battery yesterday on the v30 and I had almost 6 hrs of SoT and 18 hrs on...still almost 40% very impressive. For me at that point the Note would have been dead.
What made me decide to keep the V30 and sell the note was the following.
1. I much prefer a wide angle lens over a zoom lens. So many times I need to capture more int he scene yet can't back up. I'll sacrifice a little quality to get that.
2. Size. Note was just too tall. It bothered me and it was the first phone I did could not adjust to it "feeling big". The V30 just feels like the perfect phone in my hand size wise. I'm 6'3" and don't have small hands but just could not get used to the note. It would stick out of my jean pockets..sad when a phone can't fit in your pocket. LOL
3. I really don't like the curved edges. too many accidental touches. I know it makes the bezels "look" smaller but I prefer the "almost" flat screen of the v30.
4. I did not use the pen much at all. Maybe to show people what it could do or my son played with it drawing. But I won't miss it. I'm sure others use it a ton and can't do without it. I just don't.

Of course you can. But that is not the ideal solution. On an $800 flagship I should not have to do that. Lux is a better option than that. This is something LG should fix. It was/is an issue on the G6 as well.

found a few more photos, added. The last few of the lowpro bag were with morning light (overcast day) coming through a window about 8 feet from the storage table. No interior light on in the room.
closeup of PC card - taken from about 10 inches away with both cameras, focused on heat sync on the card. Light from window 5 ft away and room light on. So a good amount of indoor lighting.
Also, a note on all the photos I took. I did press my finger on the same focus point and let the camera focus just to make sure I compared the same results. I do this most of the time when taking photos anyway. So, this was not a test on the auto focusing abilities of each camera. on the last one I pressed on the DVD stack on all 3 photos. I also sat with my elbow on my knee in the same exact spot/distance for all 3. Which shows how much more of the scene you can actually get with the LG wide angle lens. The reason I love having that.

Yeah, as I stated in initial comment. I noticed inconsistency with camera. Sometimes it is instant and other times there is a noticeable lag. I have not done enough testing to know if the lag is based on setting/light or if it is just truly random but I have experienced it. Note 8 had no lag whatsoever as I'm sure the Pixel 2 will not if it is anything like the Pixel. My reason for keeping the V30 was that the wide angle lens and size was far more attractive to me vs the negatives. It will be a hard decision when my Pixel 2 XL comes in though. I just like how responsive the Pixel phones are. This v30 is laggier than the Note 8 for sure but bearable. Hopefully there will be a firmware update to fix some of these issues soon.

I had the G6 as well. I assure you the photos are better in all areas over the G6. Especially the wide angle lens.

I read that some carriers actually disabled the brightness feature you're looking for on the V20. I know that t-mo was one of the carriers that disabled this feature. I have the V20 currently and on AT&T I can increase the brightness if it's too dim and the phone will still auto adjust the brightness if lighting conditions change, but it will remember that in a certain lighting condition, I changed the brightness and it will use the value that I previously set instead of the default value. I'm thinking t-mo also disabled it on the V30 also.

Man, I wanted to love the V30. It was supposed to be the better, snappier cousin of the S8. But I'm going to return it, and stick with the S8, which I don't love. I wanted to share a few of my observations, in case anyone else is considering a similar upgrade. Disclaimer: I usually prefer stock Android, but switched to Samsung after the Nexus 6. Imho Google hasn't released a good phone since the Nexus 5X and that's sad.
First, the screen quality on the S8 is much better than the V30's, especially at lower brightness levels. Looking at the V30 on auto-brightness settings, it always looked washed out compared to the S8. Even the V30's different color settings didn't help. And to be clear, it's not a matter of the V30 looking more "true to life" -- the screen colors just looked washed out, especially at indoor brightness levels. Counterpoint: You might not notice if you are coming from a non-Samsung phone like the OnePlus 3T or 5.
Second, the scrolling lag on the V30 was atrocious. And I say this coming from an S8 where scrolling lag is noticeable. The two apps where I noticed it the most were Instagram and Sync (for Reddit). Vertical scrolling, side scrolling, scrolling upside down, all of it was laggy as hell. I thought LG's UI was supposed to be more responsive? I compared the two side by side, and the V30 made the S8 look *buttery* smooth. Didn't make any sense. Super disappointed in this aspect of the experience.
Third, the V30 is just overall too big to be used with one hand. As one example, the volume button placement is way too high on the phone to adjust with one hand. And I have big hands. Ugh. The V30's placement of the fingerprint reader is VASTLY superior than the S8's... but that's kind of it.
Finally, the overall UX design on the LG V30's default skin feels cheap. This includes the default System UI theme, system apps, and their icons. Compared to the S8, the V30's UI is just bland and retro-looking. I immediately missed the contemporary design of the S8's system UI buttons. I searched for LG V30 themes that could help, and none of them fixed the icons problem. The dialer app especially was just hideous compared to the Samsung dialer. And for both, I wish I could replace them with the Google dialer, but they don't let you do a *true* and *full* dialer replacement.
So I'll be sticking with my S8, and probably holding out until the S9 rolls around. **** man. Not happy about this at all.

I've got zero scroll lag in Instagram, G+, Chrome... etc. As for the screen looking washed out compared to Samsung, it's generally well known that Samsung goes full tilt on the punchy cartoonish colors. First thing I always had to do was set my Samsungs to their mildest display setting. I even had to back the V30 off just a tad. As for the default LG skin, I replace it out of the box with the Google Now launcher, the beauty of Android no matter which manufacturer you're using.
Lastly, are you sure you have big hands? My Nexus 6 and LG V20 felt fine. The V30 feels small in comparison. It feels closer to my work iPhone 6s in size than it does to my V20.

I switched to V30 from S8+ for one reason only, the HiFi DAC. S8 (non Exynos) headphone jack sound quality is mediocre at best, couldn't stand it anymore.
V30 sound quality is incredible. Only thing I miss so far is Samsung Pay.

Quite content with my V30 so far. No lag, slimmer than my Nexus 6. Anything else is subjective

This is now the 4th mention I've seen of the V30 having noticably laggy scrolling. Making me nervous for my purchase.

To answer the question above, the Nexus 6 was pretty big but didn't FEEL too big. This V30 however does... strangely. Go figure.
Quick update after using the V30 a bit more:
1. The video camera features on the V30 are really swell, clearly superior to the S8. If I shot a lot of video and didn't care about the other stuff like ugly UI and laggy scrolling, this could sell the phone.
2. The V30 does NOT support Kevo deadbolts, even though it has BLE. Wtf? This ALONE is a deal-breaker. For SEO: the LG V30 does not work with Kevo deadbolts by Kwikset.
3. Quad DAC is a nice feature, and it seems to be unique in its class. But I don't listen to headphones very much, and it has no effect on the phone's built-in speaker.
4. I compared the scrolling side by side and the lag is NOTICEABLY bad on the LG V30. To show it off I'd need a THIRD camera though.

I'm surprised to hear that you were experience scroll lag on your S8. I have an S7 Edge and never experience scroll lag, and I use Instagram and Sync for Reddit.
I actually find the V30's size to be great. Compared to my S7 Edge, the proportions are almost identical. It's nice going for more screen real estate without adding on extra bulk.
One of my biggest concerns with upgrading is the quality of the screen and the overall build quality. Going from my S7 Edge, nothing jumped out at me about the screen, but the V30 feels cheaper in hand. Probably because of how light it is and that awful chrome band around the edge.

I have both phones, and except for the part where the S8 might have the 'better' (I think its just brighter, V30 is more realistic) screen, I disagree with every one of OP's points. I mean really, the size? The V30 is 3mm wider, 5 mm taller, almost a mm THINNER, and virtually the same weight. Thats barely any difference, especially considering V30 has a screen .2 inches bigger
If you have problems getting to volume button, you DO NOT have big hands. I have normal hands and I have zero problem reaching any button on the V30. Funny thing is that the Volume buttons on the S8 are actually a smidgen higher than the V30. There is almost zero lag in both of those apps for me on V30. S8 is pretty lag free also, so that's a wash.
The UX thing is just funny. There are a million launchers/themes/icon sets out there that can change the look of any phone. I think the V30 UI is more subdued and natural and just says 'use me right'. The S8 jumps out at you like an attention whore. I feel like I need to dial back the tones, colors and overall 'HEY LOOK AT ME' screen of the Samsung phones.
If you had the 'sky is falling' screen issues (that can only be seen in certain specific test instances) or maybe is so vain that the selfie camera wasn't up to your speed, I can understand. But you're complaining about 3 things that are absolutely not true. In my household are 2 V30, a V20 , a 6p, an S8, S8+ and a Note 8 (with a Pixel 2 on the way) and I tell you the V30's are by far the best phones in that group.
I love to see critical analysis of any phone and I have no brand loyalty to anyone. Out of all the personal reviews I've read, this is just downright the worse and farfetched. Sounds like you just wanted to hate the phone and you found ways to meet that hate. Enjoy your S8

2. The V30 does NOT support Kevo deadbolts, even though it has BLE. Wtf? This ALONE is a deal-breaker. For SEO: the LG V30 does not work with Kevo deadbolts by Kwikset.
3. Quad DAC is a nice feature, and it seems to be unique in its class. But I don't listen to headphones very much, and it has no effect on the phone's built-in speaker.
4. I compared the scrolling side by side and the lag is NOTICEABLY bad on the LG V30. To show it off I'd need a THIRD camera though.

My wife is 5'0, 100 pounds woman that wears XS everything, including gloves. She was amazed how small the V30 felt in her hands and how light it was for such a big screen.

Quick side by side test
S8 on left, V30 on right. S8 is running basic touchwiz, no other launcher. I have about 35 apps on phone, Adguard running in background. V30 has about 200 apps, running Nova, Adguard, Gear s3, Android Wear all running in background. Made this real quick to show the 'atrocious' scrolling lag in reddit app of the V30......

Have you tried a hard reset and tried again? This phone is buttery smooth compared to the s8. I downloaded Sync to test out scrolling compared to my s8 and it has no problem with Sync/FB/Chrome anything. Only problem i've had with it is the camera and taking fuzzy photos which I have a replacement coming.

Cool bud, glad you like your V30. I really want the V30 to do well since competition helps out everyone.
I handed the V30 to my buddy and asked him to tell me what he thinks. He IMMEDIATELY noticed the laggy scrolling and also noticed a new thing I had not, which is the irregular brightness of the screen with auto-brightness on.
When people don't notice the problems I notice, it's not so much that they're not having the problems I found, it's just that they haven't noticed them (yet), or they don't care. Attention to detail ain't everyone's forte, let's be real.
And of course there's always the possibility that a large percentage of V30s have hardware issues, and yours hasn't, so you haven't had any of the problems I've had.
Either way, I think LG can make it right, and I sincerely hope they do. Everything I've seen so far seems to be a software problem, potentially fixable in an OTA update -- but who knows when that will happen. The V30 should be the best phone on the market today -- but it's not, at least not yet.
LOL at the big hands thing, too. To each his own. Anyone reading this needs to grip the phone to know whether it's comfortable or not. I'm sure it's fine for some people. I'm also sure the volume buttons are too damn high on the left side.

Ya, I understand that being the phone was just released..... you can still get bad transfers etc when downloading all your previous apps from other phones etc. I agree with people earlier you are literally looking for every reason not to like it so just return it.

I do QA testing for a pharmaceuticals software and robotics company and previous to that I did consumer electronics hardware/software testing. It's pretty much my forte. (Or people could realistically die.)

I'm not saying that you aren't experiencing lag, because I believe that you are, however, I upgraded from an S8 and I will say that, yes, there was some lag when using instagram and sync. Though on the v30 I have found that not to be the case with Sync. Yes, there are moments of lag on occasion particularly when multitasking or using the camera app usually from quick launch and it often occurs when launching in terribly low light situations. That being said I would factory reset it.
4 people on my family plan all got v30s. 3 of us had no issues or lag like whatsoever accept for the occasional hiccup like I mentioned above (or a second delay when launching a fresh app from the home screen). Now, the 4th person had a terrible issue with scrolling like as you mentioned above and a couple other issues that none of us were experiencing. It confused me so much but I decided to factory reset their phone, twice might I add just to be sure, and lo and behold he has not had an issue with scroll lag once since then.
Just a suggestion to factory reset it It's just that a majority of users aren't getting any scrolling lag that is excessively bad.

Are you new to Android? If so then please allow me to tell you that a factory reset is basically the number one step in Android trouble shooting. I happen to know someone who works in a carrier tech support team and when a wierd, unexplainable issue occurs they always have the customer do a factory reset. Sucks that it's an issue out of the box but it sounds like from others that it's a fix so that's a positive!

The first thing I do with any type of lag is cache clear and if that doesn't work, factory reset from recovery.

The S8 was. The V30 was on manual with comfort view on since i was doing some reading on it.

A possibility of large percentage of V30 having hardware problems?! Where, when? Besides a few folks complaining about the screen when viewing a grey background at 0% brightness, there have been almost no reports of hardware issues, nevermind a 'large percentage'. You're making up stuff now.
How do you keep saying the V30 buttons are too high but you're fine with the S8 when the S8 buttons are HIGHER than the V30? Not only higher but then you have the extra Bixby button right underneath the down volume that I can accidentally hit a third of the time when reaching for volume. The off-center fingerprint button of the S8 is higher than the V30 volume buttons.
I give benefit of doubt but I"m seriously doubting everything you're saying. You said you have a friend, who I"m sure has a phone. Why didn't you ask him to take a video of your two phones side by side doing a simple test like I did?
Mind you, I didn't even do my typical factory reset when I got the phone. This is straight out of the box performance.
You come with your 'read this first' headline but you're sprouting zero basis statements with no evidence that no one else (even people with multiple devices) are seeing.

Then why not just try what people have said to fix it if you "really want to like it" . Like i said, try factory reset and go from there.... if it does it again, tell them and return it for another one cause its not natural

First impressions coming from a V20

Well, I started this about eight different times, and decided I'd finally actually write down my thoughts and hit send.
I've had the phone for a week now, upgraded on Friday from my rooted (stock ROM) V20, on Verizon. My main reason for staying on the V20 was to keep root for my hotspot as I was one of the lucky ones with the old unlimited plan (the one that VZW kept jacking the prices up on). Well after getting my girl an iPhone X, and knowing I was going to need to feed that thing a lot more data than a 2GB plan, I bit the bullet and changed to the "new" unlimited (ugh, I know). And then after having my V20 start exhibiting some random power off's in the middle of the day at 50+%, I decided to see what was out there. I compared the V30 to the S8+, Note 8, and Pixel 2XL.
The Pixel, while a great device, lost out with the lack of an SD card, headphone jack and wireless charging. I missed using the wireless charging on my old LG G2, and having a nice plump SD card already, seemed a waste to drop that. Yes I can use a dongle to plug in headphones for listening at my desk at work, but I lose sh*t left and right enough as it is. The Note 8 is amazing, but just a touch larger than I wanted to hold full time. I wouldn't use the pen, and comparing it to the S8+, you lose a tiny bit of screen density for... largeness. And that wouldn't have been noticeable anyway, but I would need something I could hold comfortably. Over to the S8+, then. Nice phone, great build quality, and I've never had an issue with Samsung phones before. Before my V20, I had an S6 Edge, and that's still on my plan as a backup phone. Which is actually one of the reasons why I decided against the S8+ - it looks too familiar now. Other than a little length and the lack of a physical home button, it just reminds me of my Edge. That's not to say it's a bad thing, but the design of the V30 was a refreshing change from anything else. I knew I'd lose selfie quality (the horror!), but I figured how bad could it be? Though, a little interesting that the S8 having been out so much longer than the V30, and they are almost identical in spec. So was Samsung that far ahead back then? Or are we just slow on the take? Well whatever. So I picked up the V30.
First, yes, the selfie camera is lackluster. In good light, and if you can hold your hand steady enough, it's ok. It won't win awards. There's the Google Camera Mod floating around that people enjoy. A little on that- it's fine for what it is, and adds a few neat features. And I haven't found a mode that will let you record higher than 1080 video, either. Not that I'm making movies but I will be using it for video so the higher resolution on the stock cam is preferred. I took a pair of pictures on the LG camera on Auto, and the Google camera on default settings, and they both look close enough to not make a difference. I did notice that the selfie camera seems to be better in the actual camera apps but inside other apps (Snapchat, IG, ect), they seem to lose quality. Or rather, did. Randomly today, it seems to be a little better, but who knows. For all I know, maybe I had a tiny smudge on the front camera the whole time? But I'm ok with it now. HOWEVER: Holy crap the rear camera glass scratches easily. I bought the phone, and refused to spend 50 dollars on the limited cases at the store. I ordered one Saturday, it got here today. And in five days, it's noticeable to look at, scratches on the camera glass. That's from a pocket with no other items, and from sitting on my desk at work. Not playing hockey with my phone. Recommendation: Get a freaking case ASAFP if for nothing else than to protect your back camera. Spend 5 bucks on Amazon for a cheap pos if you have to, but get something on it. It isn't bad enough to effect the camera in any way that is noticeable, but man it's going to bug me now, just knowing.
The home buttons are a pain in the a$$. I mean, they work fine, but the showing/hiding tricks take some getting used to. I've found some apps are a lot less receptive to working with it. Snapchat (yeah, I know) is notorious for it. You send someone a message, and then try to swipe up from the bottom to bring up the buttons to go home, and it does - while swiping all over the keyboard again, so then you have unwanted characters coming up, people are waiting for whatever you're "typing" to send, etc. So you have to go into the settings and disable that for certain apps. Side note on that: Apps that you've changed that for, you have to go BACK and change the setting for that app any time it's updated. So if you update the app, you have to go back and turn off the home button hiding for that app again, it seems to reset every time.
This isn't so much on the phone, but the Tempered Glass protector from Verizon is garbage. All $35 worth of it. Leaves a massive air spot under most of the phone, so tapping on the phone results in a lot of audible clicking sound and less precise sensitivity. Just throwing that out there. I normally wouldn't have, and I'll be taking this off if I can find a case I like better. The one I got, is nice and slim, but doesn't protrude tall enough to protect the screen if set face down. This is 6 dollar insurance for the interim.
The fingerprint sensor so far is snappy as can be. Even to a point that when I just want to light the screen up to check a notification (had Always On disabled), and it would actually unlock just trying to tap the power button half the time. Not a bad thing, just surprising. Volume buttons feel great, as does the rest of the phone. It might lack the feel of the Samsungs, but it does feel decent. Slippery as hell though, another reason to keep a case on if you're even remotely clumsy. The screen itself is wonderful to look at, and I think it's only a matter of time and tweaks as apps catch up to full Nougat and extended ratios and things, between apps and phones where things look better.
Obviously there are still a lot of things I haven't gone through in the settings to find and personalize, but so far, I'm loving the upgrade. Feels good in the hand, more comfortable being a little smaller than the V20 was. Battery life so far has been good, but I do watch a lot of videos and listen to alot of music at work, so I tend to burn through it quick. The quick charge is a godsend coming back up. Other than the frail camera glass on the back (and really that seems to be a common complaint with a lot of phones) and the weaker than expected front camera, I'm glad I picked it. It stands out design-wise, and it's right up there in spec with everything else out there. Not massive to hold, quick and snappy, and with your launcher of choice, worth the investment so far.
