The same as rooting a phone but I really don't see the point of rooting a firestick
The only main benefit is being able to flash gapps so you get the Google play store & other Google services however any app that isn't on the amazon store you can just download on a phone or an alternative app store & install to the firestick via adb
Disadvantages - you won't be able to update the device which may stop some amazon apps from working in the future
Ask yourself this question - what do I need root access for
If you can't answer that question you don't need root access

Hey guys,
Firstly, sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology because I'm still quite unfamiliar with it.
Anyway, I just got my Desire Z about a week ago and am planning to root it so that I can access paid apps via Market Enabler.
I've read through all the guides on how to root and seems simple enough. However, I have a few questions regarding the default HTC applications.
1: Will I be able to continue using and updating the HTC apps (like HTC Locations, HTC Camera or HTC Car Dock) that came along with it after rooting?
2: Is is possible to keep the default SenseUI after rooting instead of getting a custom ROM that looks like SenseUI?
3: Will my phone stop working with htcsense.com after rooting?
4: Will I require a custom ROM installed into it after rooting, or can I just reuse the same default HTC ROM?
Basically, I love my phone and don't want to change anything except getting to access paid apps from Android Market. To do so, I would need to have Market Enabler working, which needs me to have Superuser permissions. Hence, why I need to root it.
Thanks!

Rooting is just rooting; nothing will change other than your ability to do whatever you want to/with your device. Just rooting won't change anything other than your ability to install apps which require root access.

Oh, so I suppose I was looking at the wrong rooting options then. The ones I've been looking at seems to flash the phone as well (unrevoked).
Guess I'll need to find a tutorial to just root the phone. Thanks!

Hi Guys,
I have just got myself a UK Xperia Play (factory unlocked out the box). I am interested in rooting it but I am a little confused, so I would like to ask a few questions if I may?:
1. Can I root 2.3.4
2. Will rooting lock my phone, I read about bootloader unlocking, will this affect me.
3. Can the rooting be reversed.
4. Is there a risk of bricking the phone during rooting.
Sorry if these questions that have already been asked!!
Thanks in advance!
1) Yes - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
2) No and rooting has nothing to do with unlocking bootloader.
3) Yes
4) No
Thanks for the reply. Sorry but I have another question:
What are the advantages of rooting? I read somewhere that I can remove pre-installed games/app that were on the phone when I got it and tweak various things!!
I haved downloaded DooMLoRD_v3, is this all I need to do?
Cheers
Removing bloatware, cpu tools for your clock speed, using adfree to disable advertisements, backing up apps using titanium backup. Various advanced user tools require root.
I did all of the above and also used a root-only font changer to install a custom system font.
For the rooting just follow the instructions in the other thread.
Btw, next time this should be posted in Q & A not general.

I guess if you don't know the advantages you probably shouldn't root. That's what many people say

thanks , just for askin...after root and installed google play what else i can do with a rooted ouya? i'm really new in android world i just wanna know the potential of this device thanks again
First I was suprised I didn't see a Q&A stickied for some of these.
Now considering there are threads with the [ROOT} tag I do assume rooting is possible.
1. Is it possible if I were to buy a new firestick now? (apple and consoles and amazon's fire tablet have different generations or whatever you want to call them, usually with the newer ones being either impossible or nigh impossible to root/jb/mod etc., and that is what I am asking about here)
2. Why would you root it? {I understand rooting is fun and quite useful for my phone but considering how different my usage habits will be on the firestick vs the phone I am wondering if I would actually get use out of it. So I guess what I am morely asking here is what general benefits will I get out of this (ad removal/different tv aps etc.)
3. Has unfortunately been forgotten since I decided to focus on the other 2 and clarify (or try) what I was asking.
Please read everything!
1. Yes you can root the latest Fire TV stick with an app called Kingroot, no recovery system or rom is available "yet", but it is highly possible in the very near future this is gonna happen with thanks from our local Dev in the fire tv forums "rbox", unlocking a bootloader is probably never gonna happen, if you are thinking of doing this I rooted mine with Kingroot 4.1 or I've been told you can also do this with the latest version too (but don't quote me to that), if you do decide to root please think carefully first & if all goes well which it should (fingers crossed), please don't think about using the app Super Sume to swap/replace the Kingroot Su for Chainfires Super Su, a lot of people have bricked there device doing this removal/swap method & failed (you have been warned!)
2. You can modify/custom your system settings (if that floats your boat?), debloat/delete system apps If you wish? Put a working Adblocker on your Fire Stick? You could even put Xposed framework on it too (but I would advice You to only do this once & if the stick gets a working recovery then You can play around adding custom settings & other stuff by adding Modules to Xposed? Add Busybox & add other Rooted apps too? Have more control in general with your Fire Tv Stick.
3. Yes or No or possibly Maybe or Never depending on what question 3 was ment to be? Haha
Just check in the forums here for Kingroot & or look over at AftvNews web site for a guide on installing root via Kingroot on your stick. & if you do root don't forget to block updates to Amazon afterwards, that's also in a guide at AftvNews Web site.
Good luck
Hope this helps & if so press that thanks button
when i purchased my stick the other day I registered and allowed it to update the software.
Am I correct in saying I will not now be able to root the stick
if i am wrong about this can someone please give me details on my best options to root and if I do this will I then be able to install the G Play Store?
thanks in advance.

If unit is running OS5 you can root it with kingroot, as for GP you should not attempt to install it before rbox releases a recovery first.
im on os5.0.5 (537174420) so this is ok for kingroot?
suggest you read all posts you find on subject . Yes you can root, then block updates but DON'T do anything else until advised otherwise.
I know a very little compared to most on here but know when to WAIT.
Oh so I won't be able to enable wallpapers on launchers such as nova and widgets then I guess
