First I was suprised I didn't see a Q&A stickied for some of these.
Now considering there are threads with the [ROOT} tag I do assume rooting is possible.
1. Is it possible if I were to buy a new firestick now? (apple and consoles and amazon's fire tablet have different generations or whatever you want to call them, usually with the newer ones being either impossible or nigh impossible to root/jb/mod etc., and that is what I am asking about here)
2. Why would you root it? {I understand rooting is fun and quite useful for my phone but considering how different my usage habits will be on the firestick vs the phone I am wondering if I would actually get use out of it. So I guess what I am morely asking here is what general benefits will I get out of this (ad removal/different tv aps etc.)
3. Has unfortunately been forgotten since I decided to focus on the other 2 and clarify (or try) what I was asking.
Please read everything!
1. Yes you can root the latest Fire TV stick with an app called Kingroot, no recovery system or rom is available "yet", but it is highly possible in the very near future this is gonna happen with thanks from our local Dev in the fire tv forums "rbox", unlocking a bootloader is probably never gonna happen, if you are thinking of doing this I rooted mine with Kingroot 4.1 or I've been told you can also do this with the latest version too (but don't quote me to that), if you do decide to root please think carefully first & if all goes well which it should (fingers crossed), please don't think about using the app Super Sume to swap/replace the Kingroot Su for Chainfires Super Su, a lot of people have bricked there device doing this removal/swap method & failed (you have been warned!)
2. You can modify/custom your system settings (if that floats your boat?), debloat/delete system apps If you wish? Put a working Adblocker on your Fire Stick? You could even put Xposed framework on it too (but I would advice You to only do this once & if the stick gets a working recovery then You can play around adding custom settings & other stuff by adding Modules to Xposed? Add Busybox & add other Rooted apps too? Have more control in general with your Fire Tv Stick.
3. Yes or No or possibly Maybe or Never depending on what question 3 was ment to be? Haha
Just check in the forums here for Kingroot & or look over at AftvNews web site for a guide on installing root via Kingroot on your stick. & if you do root don't forget to block updates to Amazon afterwards, that's also in a guide at AftvNews Web site.
Good luck
Hope this helps & if so press that thanks button

How to get the Amazon Fire TV super administrator privileges?
As stated, there is to know? Please tell what
There is not a public root exploit at this time.
Sad thing is there won't be much dev done or progress made until we can root the AFTV We stuck where we are for now. That means no custom launchers, to recovery menu, no running custom OS's off a USB flash drive etc...

Amazon Fire TV software defects too
You can not use usb hard drive
You can not change the language pack States
You can not use vpn
Yes there is a ton of potential...Just like the Apple TV 3 had, but without a public root exploit, we jailed to what Amazon allow :crying:
Once the next update has been released, the root exploit will be released.
Be patient

I admit I don't follow his reasoning on that, but I'm patient.

Companies that brand it should just stop being a c"ck and ask if we want to pay to have open android instead for a small one time fee if their only after lining their pockets,it would make sense as people would buy units more often for that purpose.
Or load it with an icon for open android or apk to switch to open android on it same goes for every proprietary os android system out there.
Because of this fact alone i am not buying the amazon fire tv unless cyanogenmod can work his magic on a rom for it.
I really need to know a qualcomm beast i can get for gaming using same as the power of this any ideas here?
Hi Guys. I took advantage of the amazon deal (Fire phone + prime for $159) today and basically just want to make sure the rooting/unlocking methods are up to date and safe. I've got 2 rooted aftvs and a stick plus a KFHD7 running CM 12.1--been an aftv user since just after it's release. For those that don't know, amazon took a pretty hard stand there--breaking root and really scared some people with efuse (malicious software). I had no issues but over the past 9 months have read MANY accounts of people bricking their devices.
But this is a phone so maybe amazon is a bit more open minded toward development? I guess to start...
1. Is firmware a factor at all in terms of rooting?
2. Has amazon broken root with updates?
3. I notice the CM 11 thread lists "safestrap" as a prerequisite--is there another recovery available like CWM or TWRP?
Sorry for the noobish questions. Really I just want to know I can dig into the guides when my phone arrives without needing to worry about something going horribly wrong, other than usual risks people take when modifying software. Thanks. Looking forward to this!
***Sorry I just realized this should be in Q & A and after looking around a bit I realize most of my questions have already been answered (I overestimated development). So maybe someone can answer this--with fire tv we block the amazon domains before turning on the device for the first time so it has trouble updating AND it WILL update right to the latest firmware. That's what I plan on doing here. Actually I already have but feels like I'm way to late to the game here. Is it possible I'll receive a phone with lower firmware? They probably did have a lot of overstock but this has had several updates since then. Well unless you have any tips I think I'm pretty much caught up. Sorry and mods can move this to Q & A or even delete it.

it's possible but you want the latest unlocked (i believe international) update available anyway. the version available before this was not even rootable. this is probably one of the few times you want to grab the latest update when you get your phone. always good to check though.
Hey guys,
I never thought it could happen but I got my hands on an unboxed Fire TV from November 2014. (as the seller said it was preordered.. so it should have a very old firmware on it).
I'd like to root, bootloader unlock and put custom recovery on it, anything I have to avoid except not allowing the thing to OTA update?
And how can I get root the fastest and the most risk-free way? Block ota through router and then put towelroot on it asap I guess?

Check out the aftvnews.com web site, it has all answers to your questions.
No need to rush anything if you block updates on your router. Just follow AFTVnews.com/start and it will guide you through the whole process. The most important thing is getting through the initial setup without updating. The guide will walk you through that as well. Just select "no" when asked if you've completed the initial setup.

No, there is no root method for the Fire TV 2. (The gaming edition is exactly the same as the non-gaming edition.)
Staying on as old of a software version as you can is your best bet to ensure compatibility with a possible future rooting method. However, the Fire TV 2 has a lot of bugs, so you'll probably want to take the next 1 or 2 updates. See here for how to block updates.
somehow all my routers (and I tested a couple) dont really block the urls given on atvnews.com.
At least I can still ping them .. not sure if they block the updates though.
So how can I prevent updating when not sure if the urls are actually blocked? I read somewhere that I would have to pull the network cable at certain points and reinsert it later, can someone point me to where I find the info about that method? Thanks

Try downloading this file with your PC: http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuit...ueller-ota-51.1.6.3_user_516012020-signed.bin
If you can't download it, then your blocks are working.
Your other best option to block updates is to use OpenDNS.
blocking worked correctly but unfortunately this box I got already has the 51.1.4.0 Software Version installed- so no rooted box for me I guess.. =(
Thanks anyway for your guys' help

Where you from?
51.1.4.0 ist just a good, but last good fw, to unlock bootloader when you root.

You need a eMMc-Adapter or a person who had one. To root your device.
If you lived in germany I can help you.
A good guide is this one here -> http://solderwiresandplastic.com/
Or read this book here : [GUIDE] Hardware root via emmc chip (requires soldering!)
But pls keep your device on this fw!

Could anybody on this site put up a video on how to root the 1st firetv using kingroot and were to download the version 4.1 kingroot as a lot of people are bricking there devices i want to root my device but not 100% on how to do this would be nice to see a video before i try it as I don't want to brick my device hopefully someone on this site can help a noob here
Wait for a custom recovery. You will be safe from bricking and it will allow you to flash a clean system to remove the kingroot stuff. Just block updates right now and hang tight.

Something I realized about three days ago.
A few years back - if you would have talked to a friend about how you've installed a program on your PC - and then ran it, you'd been a weirdo. Today you just talk about it, while filming it with your phone camera and put it up on youtube - and somehow, it has become a service.
Now the reverse is true as well - place those three elements in one congruent story.
- Wants to gain root rights on a device
- Cant use an app with literally one button
- Wants you to shoot a video of it, so he/she can learn
Maybe we can agree on a new rule - XDA members will not shoot videos for you on request? (Talking about causing more problems than....)
But don't let this burry the real message here - there are people out there that root their Firesticks with Kingroot - then brick them with SuperSU-Me. Thats grand. Thats actually - thats, something.
All of that by just bringing two app names into circulation. Think about it. "Is there a videoguide out of this dilemma".
And then theres the usual "they did what the "easy to use video guide" said - then got stuck when needing to copy a file to the device or input an adb command". Realizing - with video they just mirrored behavior. After that they mostly are lost. "Which other five minute video should I watch now?"
Idk, you tell me. No - I really dont know. Someday, maybe, I'll put together a "how the world works" guide, consisting entirely of 5 minute youtube videos... Some day.
I just purchased a nvidia shield TV (not pro) and want to root the device so that I can use a couple of apps (the main one being airdroid/airmirror). At this point, I'm not looking to do much more than that. I've searched and found a LOT of info on rooting the device, but I'm now confused on which option I should use. The developer images suggest they're pre-rooted so I thought that was an option but there are a lot of folks using other methods that include twrp, magisk, etc. and I'm not sure what is necessary .
I'd appreciate some opinion on the EASIEST way to root the device.
Thanks

I always used twrp and magisk. Worked always for me. You can try to install only magisk/supersu app and check if the pre-root is recognized.
