Battery - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Why does my shiny new s9 have worse battery performance than myb2 year old s7 I've disabled. Most of the bloat all non. Essential. Apps are snoozed out still drops like its in Freefall

That's just the s9, i had the same problem.. then i sold it and bought the s9+, which has an amazing battery life (8+ hrs of sot)

Let it settle for atleast a week and make sure you calibrated the battery already.
I had it running for 4h of SOT with constant games (no power saving and no snoozing of apps) and in WQHD+ res. S9 exy

I just yesterday met a colleage whos got the S9+ and his SOT is marginally better than my S9..he's been getting 5hrs SOT. 8 seems great.
To the OP, as mention above give it a week..it will improve..but don't expect anything great. We're all praying Samsung pushes a firmware to fix things.

I'm in the same boat. 5 days in a battery life sucks. I'm averaging 15 hrs up time with 3 hrs screen on time. I'll wait a few more days and comment back.

I got 4h SOT with games in WQHD+ resolution, and that's the minimum I got so far. I tried turning on speed limiter only in power saving mode and only used social media apps and then I got 6hrs+ SOT. AOD off, Mobile data off, and Sync off. Only wifi.

Has anybody noticed that when battery is very low (under 5%) and you plug the charger the phone turns off? I don't know if this is the way it has to be.

Sorry my noob question. What means SOT...Where can i find the meaning of these acronyms?

If you mean shuts off completely, I'm pretty sure mine has been that low and I don't remember it ever shutting down.

You can check for it in Device Maintenance-Battery.
SOT means the "actual use" of your phone. How long have you been using your phone actively, not considering the times your phone was idle.

Well I am jealous. I can see the percentage drop 1% about every 2 mins of use. I had this same issue on the S9+ on launch. Ended up retuning it for that reason. I'm using WQHD+ as well with WiFi and mobile network on 24/7. Medium Power mode doesn't seem to help at all. FYI on other phones with similar settings I easily average 18-30 hrs up time with 3.5-4hrs wake time. This includes my S7 edge, Pixel 2, and 1+5T.

I dont know, I dont always full charge my phone, Im keeping it between 40-80%. I think I fully charged it just around 8times since I got it in April. Last month I disabled most apps due to "battery drain" but I still get around 4h, it seemed that it didnt help. I was a battery saver that time until someone said "I used to care about my battery, but then started to enjoy my phone". He actually got a point, why would you buy premium phone if you've had to disable most apps and featutes. So I turned them all again, except for one settings in apps.
In Settings-Apps you can select individual apps and click on battery, from there I disabled most of my apps Allow Background Activity settings. I think that is what makes the difference. I still get my notifications so I think it's not bad switching it off. Below this post is my last discharge cycle.

Getting great battery. S9 exynos.
Note that the app Popcorntime is used for downloading movies, and I used that since I unplugged it from the charger, and battery still came out really well.

[Q] Odd N5110 Battery Drain :(

Hi all
My N5110 has an odd battery drain.
Normal Internet browsing with the odd YouTube vid can see the battery drop from full to 1% in as little as 2.5hrs.
The strange thing is that it will then run at 1% for a few hours before dying (with the screen dimmed due to auto power saver).
I am running civz rooted rom but have tried several different stock and custom roms, all of which have the same issue.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

what are your kernel settings and civ's rom version you have?...
internet dains battery very fast... so keep in mind playing hd videos using internet will drain battery very fast....
Thanks for the reply mate
Doesnt explain why it's running for hours at 1% tho, guessing the battery stats have screwed up somewhere along the line but then surely they are over written by a rom flash!?

ok,
can you explain with details how do you use your note 8 (from 100% to 1% battery), i mean what applications you use, in youtube (hd content, 1 hour length or 2, etc)
besides that, how do you install the rom?... FULL wipe (erasing internal SD card from recovery and clear cache)??
Hello.
I have one N5110 stock. After upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2, I have the same exact behaviour... very fast battery drain. On standby the Note8 uses very little battery. With the screen on browsing internet it does not get to 2 hours screen time without going below 5% and entering power save mode. Then I can still browse internet for more than a hour with the dimmed screen.... very odd. Seems like it's not callibrated or something...
If I start playing games like RealRacing3 I can depleat the hole battery in less than 30min. With the 4.1.2 version it used to last more than 2 hours playing the same game.
I'm thinking on returning the device under warranty.

The biggest issue that causes battery drain is Google Music Player... Once you go from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. You can disable it in application settings.
ANother issue is DVFS... If rooted, you can run xposed framework and Wanam Xposed.
Opened my note 8 and disconnected the battery for 1 hour... the battery shower 1% when i did it. After reassembling the battery and back cover battery indicated 73%. Now discharging speed is back to normal...

Disabling DVFS will do the same, but will require rooting, which is safer than opening and disconnecting things.
Can you please explain what is dvfs? How do I do that?
Thanks

Well, one will need to root their device... I recommend saferoot on 4.2.2 and earlier, or CF Auto Root for 4.4.2.
Once you root, you can use xposed framework and install either Wanam DVFS for a fast and easy option or get the Wanam Xposed module and enjoy even more options.
DVFS is Dynamic Voltage File System... Samsung developed it, and it seems to be a problem with battery charge rate. There are two issues one that is how Android reads battery data. For example, if you plug in your device to charge it will estimate from polled data. So it is not as accurate as a laptop or cell phone. Becuase is uses a data base, anything can cause an issue with how the battery is being charged. With DVFS active in Touchwiz, it causes the battery polling to go out of cycle and looses perspective when charging and discharging.
I have tested and found that if DVFS is left enabled, you can get a very slow charge or a very fast drain according to how the battery polling database is out of sync.
If Android used hardware polling from the battery's smart interface, DVFS would not be an issue, and would work as designed. Since there are a few apps that kill the database and makes it start from scratch, you may find the problem reoccurring and must keep the app installed. I rather just disable DVFS and not deal with such battery optimizer apps that really don't optimize.

Battery life ?

It is for me because I use the thing everyday. My Transformer Infinity would last a couple of days on a charge because I never used it since there was so much lag. The G Pad is so good that I actually look forward to using it over my G2 whenever possible. That wasn't the case with my Infinity.

Same here! The best way I describe battery life is as follows:
Other tablets I've had: 99%, 73%, 49%, 31%, 11% Charge Battery
G Pad: 100%, 100%, 100%, 96%, 89%, 84%, 79%, 76%, 69%, 61%, 53%, 48%, 39%...etc etc etc : )
This tablets sips juice like a "fine classy lady at a cocktail party!"....(pinky raised and everything!) lol

The new iPad mini comes with a even bigger battery that the old one, reason why it is slightly thicker and heavier.
I have all sorts of tablets, iPad last longest when it comes to browsing and standby, nexus 7 use is 2 days my lg g pad is one day, I find each has their selling point and sometimes I sacrifice battery for other things.
Battery life ok
It is off course difficult to say since consumption is very dependent on use.
In my case it is the screen that uses by far most power - around 70-80% I think.
I have light on auto and 50-100% on the slider and it generaly uses 10% pr hour of use.
When I don't use the tab and wifi is off it uses virtualy nothing and I think it would run for days
And how fast it charges...

Charging Time line while sitting on my desk
9am - 5% start
9:30 - 20%
10am - 44%
11am - 75%
Looks like a full charge by 11:30am. So from 5-100% in 2.5 hours.
5 hours screen on for me for GPE
I just got it, first day I got 5 hours screen on time in 24 hour period and it was down to 10% when I charged it. Then it charged about 12% in 2 hours so I unplugged it and right back in and it started charging faster after that. Once charged it seems to go from 100%-90% fairly quickly then it levels out.
I'm not complaining about idle time...
I almost always use my tablets and phones with the brightness under 25 percent of maximum; that being said, I cruised through an entire weekend with the G Pad without searching for a charge, and that’s pretty impressive.

Screen on killing battery - 5% over 10 minutes!

I'm getting such bad battery drain when the screen is on its ridiculous. I've taken some screenshots from Gsam and as you can see at times I'm losing 5% battery over ten minutes of screen on time. I'm not gaming or doing anything cpu intensive and the screen brightness is set to 25%.. What sort of battery drain are others experiencing when the screen is on?

I am pretty disappointed. I had a Z2 then Z3. IMO you haven't experienced great battery life until you've used one of these phones. It's really unbelievable. I couldn't kill it in a day, period. It's really hard going backwards. I don't care how fast a battery charges or whether it's removable, there is simply no substitute for a phone you take off charge in the morning and run all day with zero thought to the battery until you plug it in at night. For me with the G4 battery is crazy bad with screen on and almost as appalling screen off. With the Z2 and 3 if I didn't use my phone much say during the morning at work it would have 90% left at lunch time. Or even streaming Pandora all day barely touched it. Same for this phone I'm already down to 70% without using it by lunch. In this reply I've lost 6% so far. I think all the comments talking about turning off WiFi, and lower brightness etc are all BS. To me, that's not using the phone. It's not making my day and my business easier if I'm constantly worried about battery life.
I've found that the avg screen time no matter what is 3-4 hours. I get 19hrs on my battery on avg and always get between 3-4 hrs of screen on time. Having that spare battery is a major help.
I miss my turbo for it had minimum 5hrs sot and over. Still getting used to this battery life on my g4
Mine has gotten better after a few cycles. The screen off drain is extremely low, which makes up for screen on drain in my case.
On my Z3v, I was amazed at screen on time - but the battery would just drain at 10%/hour pretty commonly - so even though i could get 5hrs of screen on - it would still only last for a day. With the G4, I use it all day when I need to, and then after two days I need to charge it. Not to mention I got 5hrs SOT yesterday.
I wonder if anyone will develop a 4k Mah battery that fits in roughly the same size back? I've seen 6k already... but I dont need that much. Just a bump more will help.

Recharge cycles, letting it get low enough that It needs to shut down and then charging it back up with the stock charger.
Others have reported similar, and others have also mentioned doing a factory reset if you haven't tried that.
Overall I agree with the barely average life. Especially with this phone - I'd rather they make it .5mm thicker and put a bigger batter to allow for real all day phone use of calls, email, etc.

Standby drain

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Samsung Galaxy S7's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I typically lose about 4-5% overnight. Not bad, but not as good as a Nexus
I have a massive batterydrain in standby when I am connected to WiFi. When I'm on mobile data I have no batterydrain at all in standby
I don't have a clue why it is like this
I lose 18% over 8 hours. Maybe I'll try turning wifi off tonight. That said, battery life overall seems really good. No problems whatsoever getting through a full day on one charge.

I have the exynos version. Still on stock, i just used "package disabler pro" - as you do - to get rid of all the bloatwares and apps i don't use.
Oh, and i don't know if that's relevant, but i disabled the fast charge, in order not to preserve the - non switchable - battery, it still charges quite fast.
I've checked three times now, i was never below 99% when i woke up.
Hope it helps.

only lost 1% with Always on Display? That doesn't sound right
I lose about 2-3% over night without Always on Display

Yet this is. I just turn the phone back (with the screen hidden) so that the "always on" doesn't turn on.
I am having massive battery drain
My phone drops 20% in 2 hours on standby and I'm at my wits end trying to figure out why android os is taking 500mb of data a day
20% Over night absolutely not normal!
Have to recharge phone twice a day.
I am on stock and cannot apply root (this is company phone).
When I had Nexus 5, battery drain was not so horrible.
Here is a picture of my battery drain
From start I have WiFi on and then I turn WiFi off and the battery drain stops
Can't understand why WiFi is draining my battery like this ?

battery life

So all this talk about battery... Some early reviews said 5 to 6 hours battery life. While that is good, it isn't outstanding or anything. Sony been doing that for years and the S7 with the same processor, same battery and crazy amounts of bloat gets the same amount. Anyone have anything to share?
Will check battery life as soon as I got my device. Let's wait and see how it'll do the job.

should help give some light about the battery, for me looks good enough!
Forget about the "rundown tests" as those dont show real use. Pocketnow said 4.5 hours of SOT in a day. Thats horrible for a battery of this size.

Honestly, I am not worried about battery life that much as long as the phone has fast charging feature. I have fast charging charger in office and home and heck, I can even get another for car if I want to. As long as battery life is okay, I am fine with it. Now, if I was to buy a phone without fast charging feature like iphone, that will be a completely different story.

I think the QHD Display is the Biggest Battery Drain. On my G3 I get also 4-5 SOT. Although I like the HTC 10 but I would like to get a better Battery life on a New phone as on my old one....
any updates on battery life?

Well doh, there's your problem.
WiFi + LTE at the same time is quite taxing and not even talking about the SoC load of the phone acting as a router.

I saw a review saying it equals Note 5 battery life, of 5 to 6 hrs Screen On time.

thats not good at all considering the Note 5 have a higher brightness threshold...matter of fact, HTC 10 got the lowest brightness nit I recently remember. seems like thats how HTC trying to save battery.
I've only got past 3 hours SOT on my MXP a few times, it averages at around 2.5 so this is great news for me hah.
With my usage I'm having 4h of sot

5-6 hours of SOT time isn't good at all?
The only phone I've had that was able to pull off a consistent 5-6 hrs of SOT time while lasting 24 hrs was the Note 2. I'll happily take 5-6 hrs of SOT and a full day of usage all day everyday.
Better not be 5-6 hours average... S7e for me if that happens.
Crappy untweaked M8 with everything running gives me that for years.
