Buying a new HTC 10 today
I need to know the following:
- Will flashing a custom ROM ruin the DAC? if not, which ROM do you recommend?
- Shall I update my stock HTC 10 to the latest version?
- Will the DAC work with streming music apps like spotify, soundcloud, etc?
- I will use this phone as portaable audio source in car coming from the AXON 7 which did not meet my expectations in terms of audio.
If you wan't to use stable AOSP ROMs, keep on nougat firmware. If you do not mind bugs, update to oreo.
Related to the DAC and AMPs, custom ROMs based on Stock Sense will have all of this functionalities.
Else, if you flash AOSP, you will lose them, but you can get rid of it flashing Ainur Sauron audio mod, IMO is better than BoomSound, far better. Sound are jusr clear and richer, more equalized.
Also, the DAC and AMPs will only work through built in speakers and headphones, not bluetooth.
For full use of the DAC and camera i think you should use a sense based ROM. I personaly like LeeDroid with ElementalX or Cleanslate Kernel. I also use Ainur Sauron sound mod,and if you are connecting the phone to your car via Bluetooth you should tweak it under Settings-Developer Options in order to get the best sound out of it.
You will not break any functionality of the DAC by flashing a Sense based ROM.

I really enjoy the enviroment of firmwares like CandySix and CM Nighties it looks good, feels good, works fast, except for one FREAKISHLY BIG Minus compared to stock, it doesnt have BoomSound option which basically kills a big important part of the whole device. So my question is: Can this be ported to this kind of firmwares(non Sense) Already tried some options as Viper4Android- it's not as good with any settings(my opinion) Dolby Atmos app- Gives 5,1 effect, still lacks volume levels) If there is a way, pls let me know):fingers-crossed:
Boomsound is a Dolby product used under contract by HTC (and others)...
It is a licensed product and is privately owned and closed source...
We will likely never see boomsound and enhanced dolby audio in AOSP type builds....because it's illegal to use the software....g
Hello, I've been looking for not-Sense-or-GPE ROM's with Boomsound or another sound mod. I've tried CM13 in the past but audio was a no-no for me so I got back to Sense. Any idea how do I get Boomsound? Or is there any mod that is as good as Boomsound which can be flashed without S-OFF?
Currently on S.ROM.
Boomsound won't work with CM, you need the Sense framework. While I don't remember 100%, I think Boomsound will work with GPE ROMs.
Viper4Android is a popular sound mod, that should work with CM or AOSP ROMs.

Do I need to tune settings with Viper4Android or am I just good to go?

I actually don't personally use V4A, just aware of it from these forums. But IMO if you really care about sound, you're going to tune it anyway. Everyone has different preferences on how they like sound equalized (treble vs. bass) as well as the varying sound profiles of different headphones, speakers, etc.
Hi guys, recently I noticed that the headphone jack output isn't as loud it used to be in the OOS 3.X days.
For example, setting my OnePlus X aside and comparing the two, I would much rather prefer the louder, more aggressive tones it produces compared to the OP3.
Does anyone know what I could do to work around this? I have the bluspark kernel currently. I flashed francokernel to use gain control and was running into stability issues and bootloops before i could even get to it.
I'm currently on OB14 and my daily driver IEMs are the Xiaomi Hybrid Pro HDs.
Thanks.
Use ARISE Sound mod + V4A. These work great. Also these are included in popular roms like FreedomOS & ExperienceOS.
Hope this helps.

I tried that, but it doesn't seem to make my audio any louder than it was before

Do one thing flash FreedomOS and in aroma select Arkamysa and Viper 2.5 (or whichever is latest), do not select anything else in Audio Mods. It will work for sure.

Get Viper4Android, do not get any audio mods that come with ROMs if you really do care about audio quality. All these different audio mods make music sound like absolute trash and remove a lot of clarity. Viper4Android doesn't change the sound if you don't want it too and you can go to the last option and boost the gain by I think 10db... That is plenty enough to bring it back to the loudness you like (probably way higher) while not deteriorating the sound much.
I am using lineage 14.1 with Poweramp and Viper4Android atm. (HTC ONE M8, S-OFF). After making calls and writing messages audio playback is the most important task of my HTC One M8.
This was the reason why I choose the M8.
I am wondering if I get the best performance with this settings from my M8 or if I am missing something and if there is a better sounding ROM.
I am just talking about the output of the 3,5mm port: for headphone or to a receiver...the sound of the speakers is not so important.
Is Boomsound, Beats, Harman Kardon ...mainly for the speakers or is this also important when it comes to headphones?
For example: with the alpha test version(704) of poweramp I can't use the new HiRes Output via headphones with Lineage 14.1.
When I try it then the flac will be sampled down to 16bit/48khz
I tested S.Team JW 7.5.0. with the Harman Kardon option selected, now I could play a 24bit/96KHz Flac file which was processed via DAC.
But most time I would not use this bitrate as most of my music are flac files with 16bit 44,1khz or 48khz, but i have about 400songs in 24/96.
Are there differences that one can hear with a good pair of earphones between different ROMs? Has anyone tested the ROMs for this and can tell me what was the result?
of course with same settings(standard audio player without EQ) and same flac file with 16bit/44.1KHz, if there are no differences with the standard player, then there will also be none with poweramp+viper and the other way)
Lineage14.1 runs really really smooth, no problems that I could not solve with some research by myself.
I had the impression that S.team JW 7.5.0 sometimes had delays and stops when opening or scrolling lists, not so smooth...
on the other hand I really liked the cam (dual cam, slowmo ...)and lineage has no theme engine atm and samples down HR audio files...
I had 1 day between the playbacks and it was very hard to tell if there was a difference...I hope someone can shed some light one this topic.
Really? No one? Have I posted this question in the wrong forum? Maybe the M8 General would have been better?
I don't want to post the same question again there. Would it be possible to move this thread there?
I have reinstalled the S.Team JW ROM. The sound had more punch, but I don't know how this was created...but I am used to CM since 5 years and there are so many apps and stuff that I don't use and can't remove...
I will try CM13 because of theme engine which I miss in Lineage 14.1
Thanks in advance

Audio isn't exactly ROM dependent. AOSP ROMs will have AOSP audio. Sense based ROMs will have BoomSound. If you are S-Off, you can flash the Harman/Kardon audio.lib files plus the ADSP that the Sprint H/K model had, which is a part of firmware not ROM (you need the ADSP to make the H/K mod work properly).
S-Rom does some ADSP/firmware modifications that often affects audio quality, so you might have to (probably will have to) re-flash you current firmware version to fix that up.
my car audio player is supporting of android phone and sound quality much better than aux, but Any custom ROMs I have installed so far do not support AOA2 PROTOCOL. It's so difficult to do, does it not matter for developers?
