Brand New Samsung S9+ Crackling/Distorted Speaker - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Greetings,
Today I have received my replacement Samsung S9+ from Vodafone (old one had a big scratch on the screen although it was new and sealed) only to realise that this one might also be faulty.
The speakers have an extremely distorted/crackling sound, regardless of what sound it plays (Ringtone, alarm, YouTube, Spotify etc).
Now comes the weird part...
When I leave the phone on its own for basically 10-15 minutes, it turns to normal. After some usage of 10-15 minutes, it goes back to distorted/crackled state.
Another thing is that when I checked the hardware information through two different applications (Samsung Phone INFO and SamMobile Device Info), the sound chip/card section seems empty.
Things I have tried: Start in safe mode, factory reset.
The software is also up to date.
I would appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.

Definitely seems like an electrical problem in the phone. The electronics are definitely changing power usage between "at rest" and "active" modes so it doesn't seem completely surprising that letting the phone rest for awhile would allow capacitors to drain some of their excess charge.
In any case, I'd hope if you can demo this defect to your carrier at their store, you should be able to get a 3rd, and hopefully final, new/refurb (ugh) phone out of this mess. Just really bad luck in your case

I think it's best for you to take back the phone or take it to a phone repair service. This seems like a hardware issues which needs to be fixed.

exactly same issue
im having exactly the same issue .... i just switched from iphone 7 to galaxy s9 plus but this issu is so annoying that i regret on my decision...... i just wasted my money....
sometimes the speakers are so good but after 10 or 5 minutes it gose worse i cant even explain .....
please help if there's any fixx ..... I'm broke and disappointed by samsung ......

No way should he take it to a repair place if he's within his return limit. Return it again.

If you just got it from a retailer, return it to the store and get another. If not, call Samsung. This is not something that's supposed to be happening.

ohhhh thankyou thanky for replying.... actually these phones are too much expensive in our country so i asked my friend who lived in dubai to buy me one, thats how i bought it so, i just wanned to know if it can be fixed by software because sometimes i get very loud and clear sound ...... if its a hardware problem then im done with samsung ...... but thank you so much for replying

p600 wifi turning off on of on off on....

Ok this started last night, tablet has been working flawlessly for the last 6 months or more.
What happened was, I wasn't able to use the Internet. Just wasn't working. And every 20 seconds or so it would flash up at the bottom of the screen "connected to (my router)".
So I turned wifi off and on, which usually fixed connection issues, but didn't help. I also restarted router, even though my computer and my phone isn't having any issues.
So then I went to the wifi settings screen to see if there was any way to reset networks. What I saw was this:
If i turn wifi toggle on and watch the screen, it would scan for networks, find the list... Couple seconds pass... Then the toggle would switch itself off and back on! And then it would start looking and finding networks again, and then off and on, and etc etc.
I have tried a factory reset and cache reset.
I have also downloaded the 4.4.2 stock rom and installed using odin for a totally new install.
Still does it.
Any suggestions? Seems very strange. It's under warranty but it seems like an odd hardware fault, seems more like software but I dunno.
Help me xda, you're my only hope.
I've been searching the Internet all day trying to find someone else havin this problem... But I seem to be the only one. And noone seems to have any suggestions.
At the moment I'm having to consider a warranty dispute, but that means however many days/weeks without the tablet which I use on a daily basis.
Not ideal Samsung.

Hey. I had the EXACT same problem. Even made a video of it and showed it to the service point personell. Turning on off on again and again, it also displays in the settings the switch just switches itself without any action of mine. It was a hardware defect. send it in and get a new one, better than being annoyed by it. Mine did it on a 5-10sec interval length...

Yeh mines probably every 5-10 seconds...
So this is definitly a hardware fault? In which case I'll have to get in touch with john lewis and hope they will do an exchange in store. If it involves having to send it off to samsung and waiting for it..
Anyway thanks for replying to the question, shame it wasn't better news haha!

yeah sorry to be the one to tell you this is a faulty device but it seems like this unit ain't free of errors and there quality control is somewhat sketchy.
Which android version are you running? I am asking because I run kitkat and also have relatively ****ty battery life. I use it for university so I have the screen on and write notes during lectures. Usually it lasted 7-8hours but for about a week or two it now only lasts 4-5 hours of screen time which is really ****ty.
I read somewhere that this might be a motherboard issue and if it is it might be somewhat corellated to our wifi problem. In my case they replaced the wifi module and gave me back my "old" device but this is having bad battery life so I am thinking about sending it in (again). I did however root so I would have to make use of the warranty provided by the seller, not samsung itself, since my knox is tripped.
(in Germany the sellers also must provide 6months - 2 years of warranty and there was a judgement in Europe that rooting must not have any influence on wether your device still is under warranty or not. sadly this only applies to the warranty provided by the seller, not the manufacturer)
Is your BT on and are you connected to a 2.4 GHZ network?
If so, turn off BT
I get random WiFi disconnects and reconnects from 2.4 GHZ networks when BT is on but not connected. Though, Ive never noticed the wifi switch going off and on.
I am running 4.4.2 or whatever, kitkat anyway.
Bluetooth is off, I never use it on my tablet. I dunno what network type I'm running, might be N or might be B/G, but whatever it is it what it has been for months as I havent changed any router settings lately.
I have restarted the router twice already in case this was a network problem, but the network wouldn't cause the wifi to toggle off and on, it would just cause disconnects etc. Least I assume so. I may try this just in case but like I said the network type hasn't changed lately
John Lewis are saying they won't exchange it, it will have to be sent off to Samsung for "repair". Meaning I'll probably get sent back a refurbished second hand one with a dodgy light bleed screen, as I expect they have hundreds of those lying around now.
Oh and it'll be up to 28 days. For a premium and expensive device that's less than 6 months old this just isn't good enough.

I had mine replaced as well but dont remember wether I got a new one or just my old one repaired... should have written down the IMEI I guess :-/
you're from Bristol, don't the EU rights apply there? If so your retailer should be obliged to replace or repair the device.

Anyways my replacement was done through Samsung and it took 6 days. But then again idk differences between UK and Germany...

[Q] Backlight dead?

Hi,
I just get a e-980.
With no special reason, the screen stop working, I realized under the sunlight, that my LCD still working, but I have no more backlight.
I can barely see white color shapes.
Is it a ''normal'' issue with those phones?
- I've opened it, clean contacts from ribbon cables. - didn't work
- I've done a complete stock reflash with LgFlashTool - didn't work
If you guys have no clue, I'm scared that I'm dealing with a brick, and get back my old reliable desireZ
thank you
Guess first thing to do in such a situation is to check if there is some obvious glitch- maybe brightness turned down to zero, phone not waking up die to some mod etc.. If does not work, then next is factory reset.. Next is a tot flash and then visit to the service center

yep. All done.
Like I said, I can receive calls/txt. I ear the unlock sound, etc. I can see LCD ON under bright sunlight.
Right now, I'm just thinking to throw it in the garbage, a 250$us phone that worked 2 days !!! Wow, people told me to never touch LG, I start to believe them.
Maybe some body here can sell me a functional LCD with broken digitizer??, mine is brand new.
I just dont want to dump more money in it, since the HTC is working strong, even for a 4 yo device
I'll try with LG warranty service, but it was a final sale
Exactly same issue with me too
I bought my LG OPTIMUS G PRO a few days back refurbished, it worked flawlessly for around a week. A few days ago its screen went blank even though it was possible to use screen blank like answering calls etc, i thought humidity has affected it and buried it in rice for one day and it worked again but after 2 days it again went blank and this time burying it didn't help. I am without luck now and looking for some workaround. Please someone help us if anyone knows how to fix it?
Awaiting eagerly for some suggestions.:crying:
Mmm seem to be a LG problem...
Event on optimus G forums people seems to have this trouble.
You just remind me something, went the screen go off, it was 90% rel humidity here, good point.
I tried to put it under high heat and the freezer. no luck.
All I want to know it's if it's the main board problem or screen.
Last time with LG pos, my brother had the LG 3D, wow, pos as well, nexus aren't the best phone as well.
HTC ftw, but the latest models are so no-user friendly on the hardware, seems like they try to copy apple.
My moto milestone 500mhz (2009) still working better than this, lol.
If you don't have a warranty, I'd open it up then clean and reseat the screen dongle connector.
This happened to my optimus g. Suddenly the screen went dark. I opened it up reseated everything and it didn't help. Thinking of buying a mee lcd when I find one cheap enough

yeah, but how you'll be sure that problem wont came back in a year?
The last time I heard about backlight stop working/burn, it was on compaq laptop with pentiumII processor.
1 1/2 year old phone, that's not normal.
any way, I put the phone in a bag of rice for the night, powered up, and the back light came on for 3 seconds.
-- 5 days and still have NO supports from LG.
This is just a thought. I had something similar happen in one of two ways, either the screen turning all red or dark. It was an issue with a night reading program, Twilight. After I managed to turn that off the problem went away.
If you have programs like Lux or Twilight running or anything that can control the screen try and turn them off.
Update.
I didn't touch the phone for days, leaving the battery out. Then I put it back just to be ready to retry a clean flash.
Screen all black.
I had something to do, I leave it on my desk for few hours, and when I came back to play with it, the screen light up. It's been a day , no issue, but some times the screen flicker.
It will probably let me down soon.
Strange issue : the home button led light doesn't work anymore.
Is it because I flashed the telcel stock rom on the e980 at&t?
DOES SOMEONE know HOW to get service FROM THIS company????

They just don't care, the moment I said that I bought this phone to the US and use it on a Canada carrier (Rogers / At&T , dont need to unlock the phone! ) , they flush me .
WTF???????????
Seriously people, don't deal with them.
So far, what I learn is that more this device is getting old ( wtf? a year or so isn't old) they have observed this issue.
Be careful pals, don't over use it
IF you buy a LG product, do not expect customer support. My e980 had a failed battery at 10months, LG basically told me to go screw my self. (Wanted me to pay to ship the phone, which would cost more then a new battery, and why do they need the phone when the battery is faulty, i gave up, bought myself a new battery, and have been good since. ) other then that, i like their hardware, ive had a G2X and now the G pro.

I see a lot of people try to blame manufacturer for the issues of their phone. LG, HTC, Samsung, Apple.
Remember, they all offer one year warranty. So if your phone is still under warranty, go RMA. I already got two HTC and one Samsung exchanged.
If your phone is not under warranty, did you buy it used ? Then you should blame the previous owner or yourself. Why did this happen to your phone ONLY while ten's of thousands of users here are fine?Did you do something that may cause the issue?
This is not personal. I just try to say something fair when I see people said "Never touch LG/Samsung/HTC.."
It won't help your phone come back. And it did mislead other users

It doesn't sound like they told you to "go screw yourself" exactly. It actually makes quite a bit of sense that a manufacturer would want all of a faulty device to arrive rather than that their customer just send them the parts they assessed as faulty. If they had to send you a new device, they would probably want the old one intact.

I called LG to exchange my Nexus 4 earlier this year. I call only once and they give me a shipping address( HTC also give address when I called ), asking to ship within 10 days or so .
They did NOT ask the carrier of my Nexus 4.( T-Mobile if you want to know ). They just check Imei and verified that the phone was under warranty.
I did not send the phone back to LG in the end. Someone bought it from me. The Nexus 4 has light yellow tint on display but hardly noticeable. The buyer don't care..
My point is, OP, I guess you did not told us that your phone might not be under warranty

Asking you to shipping back to factory is Exactly what is called customer service.
All manufacturers do so!
They need to run full software and hardware check on your device, making sure that all parts are working when they return the phone to you.
You might care a few bucks shipping cost . But truth is that maybe battery was not just the faulty part. Something else MIGHT go wrong as well. They need to find out once you call in for RMA.
It is YOU don't know what customer service is, Not them.

[Q] Hard bricked, but...

Hi there, I hard bricked my Tab S 8.4. No reaction to anything I did (key combinations, let it charge for hours, stuff like that). Don't know how it happened but it just crashed to death shortly after installing an inofficial Lolloipop build from here. I don't think a ROM can make a device not turn on at all. My money is on hardware failure.
Anyway, brought it in for repairs (willing to pay since I knowingly voided the warranty). Got the call yesterday. They said the software had been tampered with and they can't repair it. I objected that the software won't break the hardware but no dice. They won't even do it for cold hard cash.
BUT: To see the 'illegal' software they HAD to get the thing to turn on . And if they got it to turn on somehow, so can I. Or... am I completely wrong there and they have some magic fairy dust?
Any ideas on how I could accomplish what the repair guys could obviously do? There is no important data or anything on it so I'd be happy with Odin mode, CWM or whatever.

I kindof had the same problem, but got mine repaired.
May I ask where you send it to for repairs? Was it Samsung or a local repair shop that told you they could not fix it?
And did they send it back to you? Kindof weird they won't fix your device after you say you are willing to pay for it.
Depending on where you live, Samsung covers a lot of 'problems' in the first year of the standaard warranty.
As for turning on the device..
What options have you tried yet?
If you connect the tablet with usb to your pc and turn it on, does it get recognized?
And if so, as what?
But if your screen doesn't turn on, you're probably going to need repairs anyway.

Over here you bring it back to the shop where you bought it. They will try the simplest solutions in house but usually send it back to the manufacturer. I think the information came from Samsung directly. Another theory I have is a simple lie. They tried it in house, nothing came up, some clever guy screamed 'CYANOGEN!' and they all high fived (I have a vivid imagination )
As for turning it on: tried everything. It's not only the screen, it did nothing at all. No signs of life whatsoever. Of course the PC wouldn't recognize it since it was turned off.
I'll pick it up tonight. Maybe whatever they did to see the software tampering stuck and it will at least go into Odin mode. I can work from there.

Magic dust it was. Got it back, dead. Came home a minute ago, put it on the charger. Lo and behold, the battery appears. Device turns on too, boots Lollipop goodness. 0 per cent battery but hey. It simply reset itself after the battery completely died. Black screen and no response doesn't mean the device is off.
As soon as they switched it on they would have seen knox had been tripped.
Sort of did you a favour by telling you it wasn't bricked.
I had the same sort of problem i connected my tab to my laptop and used the recovery mode key combination then my tab came back to life

Comforts me while ROM developing that the only reported case of a hardbrick was here - and the battery just died.

Crackling Speakers -- Manufacturer Defect or Software Bug?

The phone speakers make a crackling popping noise periodically... i cant figure out what exactly triggers it and i dont think its necesarily just at high volume. The one way i know how to reproduce this every time is to run antutu benchmark and try to turn the volume all the way down and all the way up while the first video benchmark (i think its called maroon) is running. the speakers will crackle through several of the adjustements.
Anyone else experiencing this? Do you think this is a software issue or a factory defect? I could listen to music for a halfhour straight and not have an issue as long as im not doing anything else with the device which makes me think its more of a software issue when volume is being adjusted or other operation where the volume is being toggled (i.e it has also happened while receiving a notification where the first milliseconds of the notification alert will play and then it will "crackle-out")
I did a complete factory reset and booted total stock and still had the issue so its not root or any modification related.
Hey, i have the same problem! Did you contact the support?

I contacted support and the tech said they didn't get any other reports of this happening and said it might be a hardware issue but then they forwarded me to Verizon to get a replacement phone... then Verizon told me it's not a hardware problem it's a software problem so I can't get a replacement. I am convinced that it is a software problem because of the symptoms of otherwise normally working speakers but at the same time I am very surprised that there aren't tons of other people bringing this up. I am also not sure where to report this bug to google

Actually I have heard of this... Its in the forums somewhere...
Tell VZW to STFU and send you a new one.
I've been experiencing a similar issue. Pixel XL 128GB.
I notice sporadic stuttering in the video and audio whenever playing videos, either through YouTube or Chrome. I don't really notice it anywhere else, which leads me to believe it's a software issue. Potentially a bug in the video decoders. I haven't contacted Google support yet.
I had the same exact problem with my Verizon one, it happened twice in a week of owning it, it bothered me so I ended up returning it, back to my s7e!
---------- Post added at 04:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:35 PM ----------
When it first started happening to me I couldn't find any others talking about the issue so I thought I was alone lol
My 32gb XL has been doing it too. I generally use bluetooth headphones, so it's not a big deal, but it is certainly something I've noticed when trying to use the in-phone speaker.

Thanks guys, so I contacted Verizon and they had the nerve to tell me that they would replace it but only with a "like new" device. What a joke. So basically they told me well **** you and that sucks that we sent you a broken phone so here's somebody else's old broken one. such a slap to the face.
I didn't have the time to sit an argue so I will have to either call back another time or go to a store
I'm contacting support about this now. I only notice it when I'm using my Daydream View headset though. But does anyone know if it's safe to perform a factory data reset if I'm rooted with custom kernel?
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
I have the same issue. Here is where I posted about it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/help/pixel-xl-speaker-issue-t3483952/page3
I contacted Google. They want me to send my phone back and after they got it they will send me a replacement...
Being on Verizon I am also afraid that I'll get shipped a phone with a locked bootloader, I am still trying to figure out how I wanna handle this
Same here. Sending back for a new one.

You can send you phone back to the Google store if you speak to the right person. But you will have to send it then they will send you another. But beware they are already sending used phones as replacements just as Verizon is. Many have returned their device for many different reasons. This is a nice phone and we all like Google but this phone has the worst customer service I've ever seen displayed versus a nexus. Google will actually argue with you to assure you there's nothing wrong with your phone even though you have it in your hand and know there's something wrong. And in all honesty every phone should be recalled because of the lens flare if the camera. That's a major issue noteworthy if a recall. Google doesn't want scar of their first all Google phone to tarnish their image and branding. I spoke to Google cs and the rep was totally real and honest starting that the camera has caused many phones to be replaced knowing all of them have the same camera issue. He said they've replaced do many phones that it had caused a delay of others getting their phones. Google actually has phones that are new put aside for replacing defective phones and they've used all of their stock as replacements. Hence the reason after two months they are already sending out used replacements.
I think I am going to take it to a Verizon store tomorrow because the process of showing them the issue will be a lot easier and maybe they have older phones in stock that don't have locked bootloader

WiFi Issue

Well i just got a brand new Moto Z2 Force and as I was setting up, i noticed the WiFi connection stopped working from time to time. I thought it was mi WiFi network, but issue was persistent on any WiFi network. I bought it on December 30, 2017
What I have done so far:
- Restore to its factory settings (didn't solve the problem)
- Update software 7.1 (didn't solve the problem)
- I took it to the carrier I bought it from, (They kept it for 12 hours to monitor its issue) (didn't solve the problem)
They told me, since its not a carrier issue, I should contact Motorola directly.
- I called Motorola support, and they told me that the phone needs to be sent to be repaired. Since its a common issue regarding WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, what really pissed me off, was the word "repair", i explained that, why I should get a repaired/refurbished phone, since i pay full for a new phone and they explained that, thats how Motorola respect their "warranties". Repairing a defective device.
Since I live in Mexico, warranties here are a big pain in the ...
I know carriers in the US, have a 15 or 30 day, hassel-free return policy. But in Mexico, once you take it out of the box, its your problem.
Im pretty annoyed since I have the Moto Z Play and this phone works perfectly, thats why I went for the newer Motorola. Since I know how Motorola respects their warranty im never buying a Motorola again.
UPDATE
After going back and forth, the carrier decided that was a DOA phone and gave me a brand new one. I'm been using it for a week now and no issue whatsover.
Just some bluetooth disconnections from time to time, but i can live with that hoping for a software update fix.
Hi there!, calm down, i'm here to save you, but first off, i'm form Mexico too, and yeah, thw warranty here is some kinda tricky, but with Telcel you got the option between 30 days after the purchase to get a new one. But whatever, that time passed already.
Ok, first, tell me if you got the next issues:
Sudden disconnections
Horribly and stupid process to connect after a "breakdown" happens.
When you were connected (Luckiest thing ever), did you noticed that sometimes the speed goes like ZERO kb/s, it tooks like years to load an HD video form youtube?
If your phone shows all these sympthoms, welcome to hell, and i got some good news for you, the problem is not 100% the phone, for some reason, this problem starts when you update all the stuff form Play Store. So the phone is "physically" OK.
If you want further assistance you can send me a PM with your phone number, i'll be in touch shortly.
I'm glad to help you.
He’s not the only one with this problem. Would love to know your miracle solution!
I also have the same problem but it works PERFECTLY with 5 GHz Wi-Fi AC. Take a new wifi router

OT - I'm sorry, but this smacks of a scam. You don't need a phone number for anything, and if you have a fix, post it for others to use. What could be so secret as to warrant a PM.
I have had WiFi drops / performance issues with other devices with the same chipset, and it was fixed splitting the 5 and 2.4 into separate WiFi connections.

Hi there, first off, you have to turn on the phone in Secure mode - Long press "shut down" and then accept to turn on the Phone in secure mode.
Then, you have to test the wifi functions in this mode, if everything works fine, the problem it's not something about the HW of the Moto Z2 Force, but the problem it's a process which is causing this wifi disconnections, slow wifi etc..
Now you have to identify which process i scausing this, if you ask me, i've found that Google Play Services i scausing the problems, so i've tried many different versions and now it's working great, no wifi disconnections, FULL speed, and no other problems.
Let me know if i can help you out with more information, sometimes it's hard to write through a phone jaja.

Wanting to file class action lawsuit
Well it's as plain as I can make it; after attempting to contact support for help with my Z2 Force's WiFi issues; which go figure I find out is a known issue since DAY 1. They won't fix it because the warranty ended 11/18/2018. I explained I found over 17 pages on just Lenovo's website of issues and Motorola and Lenovo did nothing. They still won't do anything they want 150$ to look at it and then they may give me a replacement z2 force. I've had enough I am starting the process of a class action lawsuit against Motorola; and Lenovo and I wanted others to reach out to me. If you've had issues please contact me. Thanks
Rob
My s z2force (1789 05) sometimes disconnects the network (including wifi). When playing games, it is usually used. I feel that this is not a big problem. I was on a lg v30. This problem is more serious.
