Sprint Z2 Reviews? - Moto Z2 Force Questions & Answers

I have about had it with my unrootable LG V30+.....the call quality is crap and seems to be way worse on the same networork I got good quality with my old Galaxys% and HTC10
How are people liking this phone on Sprint?
1) Call quality? Calling Plus work well? (It sux IMO on the LG V30+)
2) Battery life good?
3) How are the notifications? I grew to hate the Always on display on the V30 but its your only option unless you dont want to now if anything is there when screen is off? Is there an NoLED on this phone?
4) is not having a head phone jack a downside?

Right now, its the only phone I'd run on Sprint until T-Mobile is done buying them out so I can get a Pixel. Voice calling plus sounds pretty good. Not as good as a true VoIP call but getting there. A lot of people claim the mods are gimmicky, yes some are, but the battery packs keeps your USB-C slot free for the headphone jack cable while the mod charges your phone, so most times you might even forget you don't have the Jack.
Bloatware is a PITA on Sprint. On nougat we were able to disable 90% of it but it's pretty well embedded on Oreo. Can only disable and each update enables them again.
ROMs are now out there. Some features don't work, but I haven't noticed anything (calling plus isn't there, but call quality on mobile network sounds about the same on this phone.)
Edit: there is a notification LED nestled behind our proximity sensor. Its disabled on stock but works on AOSP. There is a camera flash app floating around in the forum that is an amazing alternative. (We have front flash and the app can do front flash, back or both)
Going into the moto app, you can disable always on.

Thanks! I have some more questions and comments in Red!

, but I haven't noticed anything (calling plus isn't there, but call quality on mobile network sounds about the same on this phone.) I was under the assumption that this phone had Calling Plus on Sprint it says so on Sprints website:
Feature list:
Calling PLUS: Calling PLUS lets you call over Wi-Fi Connections and Sprint's LTE network. You can browse the Internet and use apps while on a call. Enable the service under Settings on your phone and experience great coverage and domestic calls at no charge.

You forgot to remove the quotes. Now I can't see your questions when quoting you.
Plus calling works on stock. It doesn't on AOSP, that was my statement. That us because Sprint does some ****ery to get it to work. Modified GSF jar, modified phone app, and some XML stuff in OEM. Things AOSP will not support on a ROM intended for multiple carriers.
With root, you cannot "delete" or "uninstall" the apps. They reappear. All bloat is in OEM and if you wipe OEM, you'll lose WiFi calling along other features.
Besides WiFi calling, VoLTE, and SELinux (will not be CTS certified until that's fixed) I honestly don't know of any other issues... Oh, I did have a provisioning issue a few months back, but seems to have been fixed since then. Been running AOSP for over two months without going stock besides one time to ensure flash all would pull update and take it.
Edit: oh. Headphone thingy... You don't need to use your USB-C port to charge your phone if you get a battery pack mod, freeing up your USB-C for the adapter that comes with the phone that converts USB-C to 3.5mm headphones jack.

I've never reallu understood what AOSP means...Stock being what comes with the phone obviously and AOSP is a phone rooted with a Rom on it?

AOSP means Android Open Source Project. 99% of custom ROMs like lineageOS, Dirty Unicorns, Carbon ROM, etc run AOSP.

So google has found a way to battle rooting in Oreo keeping us, even with unlocked bootloaders from getting rid of useless Google Apps?

It isn't google. It's device OEMs and carriers. Sprint tells Motorola do everything in their power to keep the carrier specific stuff on the phone. You can still disable, but it'll still be a file on the device. This is why I want a Pixel. No carrier bloat. I hate the page and a half of junk Sprint installs on our device. I guess they needed more money and that's why T-Mo is buying them out.

IS this the case even with the Z2 you can buy from Motorola directly and use it on Sprint?
Why dont you buy a Pixel directly from them and use it on sprint?

All Z2's are carrier locked. You cannot grab a USC one and it work on Sprint. If I use another one that's carrier unlocked, I won't get the plus calling without sprint firmware, so I'd just flash AOSP again anyway. Google Pixel 2 has a plethora of issues compared to this phone and AOSP. At least calling works 100% of the time. I did my research and getting this and unlocking the bootloader (reason I chose it, if I can't unlock from OEM, I won't buy it) and installing a custom ROM. I hate OEM bloat and BS.

So thr one for 500 on moto site will still have calling plus active or not?
And youre saying the minute I root I lose vallong plus if I install an AOSP ROM
I need calling plus for a house with no cell service

If it doesn't say Sprint, WiFi calling and VoLTE will not work. Only the Sprint software will have it work.
Just rooting won't break those calling features. If you aren't installing a custom ROM, you'll be fine.

So is there a thumbprint on front or back?
And in car you can't charge and have head phone same time ?

Fingerprint sensor is front middle bottom.
If you can find an adapter that does both, otherwise if you want to charge and have headphones, use the moto battery mod.

When I had my Galaxy s5 rooted I didnt lose Wifi Calling....is this phone different?
Which Sprint apps are you talking about that specifically break this function if you take them away?

Rooting will not lose WiFi calling. Rooting will not adversely affect your ability to use calling plus. Wiping OEM to remove bloat will.

What would specifically wiping OEM mean? Not sure I have actually done that other than wipe and add a ROM. Never stayed on stock

BYOP to Sprint will most likely not have WiFi calling. After fiddling with this phone and trying to get it to work with an international variant's ROM, I can tell you it's a 20% chance WiFi calling will work.

Rooting Advice

Hi, I have about a week old LG G3. Now, I like the phone's features, but I am thinking I want to try Pure Android to enjoy the hardware even further. I need T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling at the very least. That's very important to my device. I want to enjoy some of the LG features if possible but in an AOSP setting. Is there a specific rom that has Wi-Fi Calling and pure Android at the very least? Can you unvoid your warranty as well if you root the LG G3? Is the bootloader unlocked on the T-Mobile LG G3?

Nope no wifi calling in aosp but theres a good chance android L will support wificalling nativly so cyanogenmod 12 will probably be your choice when it comes out
You can never unvoid you can only cover your tracks and hope they dont realize you voided in the first place
Tmobile g3 is unlock out of the box you dont need to do anything to unlock it.

With my past experiences with tmobile they generally don't care about rooting so long as the device is working fully, they end up either sending it back to LG to get it restored or they do it in the store.
You can however unroot if you really want and nothing would happen.

[Q] Regarding WiFi Calling...

With the release of the M9, I've been considering trying to find a good condition used M8 for cheap(ish).
I'm no stranger to unlocking and modding a phone, but I'm having a hard time getting a handle on WiFi calling on this one. It seems like it kind of works on some mods but requires certain radio versions be flashed, and a lot of situations are solved by giving up and flashing a T-mo stock OS. Then there's the inclusion of WFC into Android as a stock feature at some unknown point in the future, maybe 4.1 but only on the Nexus 6 at first..?
So for those of you who actually already own the phones and have been playing around with them for awhile now, do you think it's even worth getting an unlocked/non-Tmo M8 if I need to have WiFi calling? Or is it better to just get a T-mo M8 to start with and deal with de-bloating it? And how bad do you think the bloat is in the first place?

For t-mobile wifi calling I believe you need to have the phone setup as a t-mobile phone. So if the phone is a non-t-mobile phone, you need to run a t-mobile ROM, which might include flash different firmware and setting other items. From what I know, the ROMS that have the t-mobile wifi calling in them used the t-mobile ROM as a based (but I could be wrong), and those that do not typically are other GSM based ROMS.
Remember that depending on your plan, you could just use google voice over 3g/4g or wifi also.
Kind of figured it was something like that, thanks. In the end, I actually wound up with a Moto X since they had that package deal with the headphones last week and I was in the market for a new set anyway. Guess I gotta do without Wi-Fi calling for now.
This user was able to get it to work, so you might try flashing this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-htc-one-m8/general/t-mobile-wifi-calling-t3058708

Thinking of switching from Note 2 to G4

The primary reason I'm considering the G4 instead of any of the new Samsung models is to gain root. If I order the G4 now and it comes with 12a will I be able to root the phone right away?
Thanks,
Update: If the answer is no root for vzw 12a it will cost me $35. I just ordered it - 14 day return policy with $35 restocking fee.
I don't want to install a different ROM. Just gain root so I can run viper4audio, adfree, titanium, greenify (root) and other apps that need root access.

Verizon pulled the 12A firmware because it screwed up receiving Notifications over WiFi, specifically because of something with IPv6. This is NOT a LG specific issue but rather a Lollipop issue. The Nexus 5 and Samsung devices were hit too. There has been a fix for a while, but for some reason this update did not include those fixes and thus the update was pulled.
If you order a G4, it will come with 11A, which is rootable.
Even in a odd ball chance that you do get one with 12A, that is still rootable.
Although we are in the process of a Bootloader Unlock. At this time the process is only working on V0 devices (10A). Every update increases this version (11A = V1, 12A = V2). This "version" prevents users from flashing backwards. So if you update to 12A, you can not go back to 11A.
What this means is everyone is instructed to NOT update. In the event that they update the bootloader unlock to allow V1 devices, you will already be on V2.
While 12A fixes a few missed touches with the touchscreen (software issue), it ultimately will break ability to receive notifications over WiFi (there is a fix in the Play Store) and could hinder you unable to unlock your bootloader (for flashing custom roms and stuff) moving forward.
The G4 is an awesome device but at this time only the Tmobile and Sprint have custom recoveries. The Verizon is stuck with only root. We CAN "flash" stuff with an app, so things like Xposed and stuff are working. No big deal as there seems to be a lot of people working on this device to crack it open. I just want you to be informed when you make your purchase.
However LG is releasing a new phone coming out, the LG V10. It is basically the same phone but has a second display at the top for quick shortcuts, media controls, etc. So you may want to look into that too. Also the new Nexus Devices have just been release recently, which are other options. Me personally, I would recommend the G4 still. The DoubleTap2Wake/Sleep is so addicting and will change how you use your phone. It also has Wireless Charging (with an addition of a Qi Sticker). The addition of a second display looks pretty cool, but probably will only work with LG specific apps. No one knows if anyone will be able to customize the ability of the second screen. As for the Nexus devices, the 5X and the 6X are a little too small and a little too big for me. The LG Nexus would be my first choice out of the 2015 Nexii. However the LG software is very very cool. It is AOSP enough but has very useful little changes that will be missed on a bland AOSP rom (floating dialer, messaging, clip board, etc). Also DoubleTap2Wake is finicky on the AOSP roms. So if you desire the need to use AOSP, go with one of the Nexus. If you are sold on the G4 (like I am) then just do it. You'll be good.
UPDATE:
Just saw your Ninja edit with making the purchase. Worry not. Welcome to the community.
Hi player911,
Thanks for the great welcome to the LG G4 community! I did make the decision to not worry about the V10 and appreciate your opinion on that. I'm excited about the phone, I've been on the Note 2 forever. Didn't use the stylus much (the times I did to make quick notes I can instead just use pen and paper and "scan" it with the camera into OneNote.) Verizon already shipped it Fedex, will probably get it Monday.

might get a sprint g5 is it worth it

so I might trade my psvr for a g5 battery and cradle
guy got a v20 on release day so the g5 hasn't even been turned on since so whatever firm it was on then is what its got.
so im assuming its still on mm
what are my options on downgrade and rooting?
what are my options to sim unlock?
ive played the life outa my vr and am quite disappointed with what titles are out so I can come off it and not feel bad but is the sprint g5 worth getting?
I figured id throw out a few questions before I jump into a bad deal
I just got one a week ago, coming from an HTC One M9. This is not a phone you want to get if rooting or custom ROMs are important to you, as the locked bootloader prevents that.
I've rooted my previous phones mainly to install a firewall and remove carrier-specific junk. However, non-root firewalls work just as well, and you can de-brand the phone by entering ##BRAND# in the dialer. This removes Sprint's apps and branding and leaves surprisingly little crap running in the background, but if you're the type that wants to remove anything and everything that you don't need, you won't be happy.
SIM unlock is quite easy, following the guide here. Everything works for me, including LTE.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with it.

If the battery hasn't been removed before, it's on there pretty tight. You separate the battery by twisting it off, basically, pulling from the inside edge towards the outside. There's at least one video on YouTube showing how to do it.

OK, if you installed the Hidden Menu APK from the SIM unlock guide, open it then go to SVC, then Factory Reset (R&D Only). Of course, this is going to completely wipe out the phone but it will definitely remove Sprint's apps at the same time. When the phone restarts and goes through the setup process you'll see a screen where it tries to configure the phone with Sprint. Press Volume Up and Down together at this screen to cancel that configuration so you can proceed with phone setup as normal.
Hope you have better luck...9 months in and bootloops. No gamer here just usual user with maybe just listening for YouTube red (screen of) at work for 4-5 hr a day.
Tried new battery, factory reset....updated...seems to do it when gets really hot...but it's done it when not feeling as hot. Even with just bare apps.

I don't want to hear any complaints if anyone follows that.
Just be patient.
Tons of people tried flashing the Korean variant for Pie, and then they regretted it when their NAO and other variants got the update -- as we all knew they would. They had to cross flash yet AGAIN, losing everything, losing all data again.
One guy complained LG "forced" him to double cross flash -- first to Korean and then to more desirable NAO when it was released -- when no one forced him to do anything. He was just impatient.

The original post from the account that is now deleted from reddit stated this same thing as the OP. Or similar. In replies someone stated this and quote "DON'T FLASH on USA ULM or AWM models! Doing so has bricked WiFi and mobile data for some users in the past. This is due to the slightly different partition sizes and locations on the KDZ's GPT table. You will also lose most LTE functionality, as the Korean model and firmware don't support many US LTE Bands: 12, 13 (Verizon), 66, and 71."
Like mentioned that original Reddit post was deleted...I wonder how many folks took the plunge, cuz there is no telling what could happen. Maybe some users have no issues whatsoever, then maybe others break their wifi stack or mess up their nvi stuff.
This is working fine. Mobile Data, WiFi, Bluetooth etc.
I took the plunge an installed the Korean one on my ATT model. I recommend waiting or rethinking entirely. Because it's a Korean model, apparently by law you can't disable the shutter sound when taking a picture, and it's LOUD. even on do not disturb or silent. WiFi and data seems low and low signal. Also, WiFi calling/ textRCS is gone!
On top of all that, Android 10 for this phone is well.. very beta. Glitches everywhere, janky animations, and who knows what else I'll encounter. The gestures? I've been waiting a long time for this, the main reason I wanted 10. Well, they're trash. It might just be LG's implementation, using them is like flighting against a storm. Everything is an extra step or three. They're just not meant to be there. I always scoffed when people said they turned them off. Can you use them with a third party launcher? Yes, but you won't. It'll go from beta to pre alpha. Anything good about 10? Not really, maybe just some native dark theme but it doesn't even look good, too dark, hard to see any elements. And when you switch between light or dark theme, everything switches. Not all apps look good dark, can't always have some dark and some light at once. Idk I'm not feeling it. Maybe Android 11 or One UI does it better.
Update: calling doesn't work. Whoops
Update 2: after deleting apns/ resetting them, calling works now
Yeah, stuff like this below is what I'm talking about. By the time the NAO V35 Android 10 is released it will be more compatible with U.S. carriers and possibly be more polished.
But some of this is just LG and their approach to the 2nd OS update they're forced to give you. They passive aggressively want you to move on to another phone. For the V30, the cursed 2nd OS update was Pie. They didn't even finish doling it out to all variants (Sprint LS998 and AME H939DS were left out) and US998 Pie in particular was wonky. EU H930 took three botched tries to get a decent version.
On my US998 V30+, I stayed on rock stable (rooted) last Oreo.

Whoops

Update 2: after deleting apns/ resetting them, calling works now. That's a relief..
As for all the other stuff I complained about; Yeah it's definitely a bit of planned obsolescence. It's Android 10 sure, bit too janky where it feels like a downgrade. So I don't recommend the upgrade, at least not via the Korean firmware. It's possible the us/ unlocked version could smooth things out
seems like an alpha version of android 10. its a little buggy.
going back to pie and wait the us unlocked or gfi version.
I followed that tutorial. I'm on AT&T in Southern California and haven't run in to any issues. The only thing I don't like is not being able to disable the shutter sound.

I just realized my wifi calling is not working. RCS is working fine.
Korean firmware doesn't have WiFi calling.
Also, just noticed cannot set video capture above 1080p on any camera application
Call recording is pretty handy though

I took the plunge an installed the Korean one on my ATT model. I recommend waiting or rethinking entirely. Sounds like each new release for this phone becomes more unreliable. To do half-assed upgrades it's better to not do them at all, LG.
No news on occidental KDZ, right?
. I guess COVID-19 has wiped out all hopes of us seeing a Google-Fi version of Android 10?
