Thinking of switching from Note 2 to G4 - Verizon LG G4

The primary reason I'm considering the G4 instead of any of the new Samsung models is to gain root. If I order the G4 now and it comes with 12a will I be able to root the phone right away?
Thanks,
Update: If the answer is no root for vzw 12a it will cost me $35. I just ordered it - 14 day return policy with $35 restocking fee.
I don't want to install a different ROM. Just gain root so I can run viper4audio, adfree, titanium, greenify (root) and other apps that need root access.

Verizon pulled the 12A firmware because it screwed up receiving Notifications over WiFi, specifically because of something with IPv6. This is NOT a LG specific issue but rather a Lollipop issue. The Nexus 5 and Samsung devices were hit too. There has been a fix for a while, but for some reason this update did not include those fixes and thus the update was pulled.
If you order a G4, it will come with 11A, which is rootable.
Even in a odd ball chance that you do get one with 12A, that is still rootable.
Although we are in the process of a Bootloader Unlock. At this time the process is only working on V0 devices (10A). Every update increases this version (11A = V1, 12A = V2). This "version" prevents users from flashing backwards. So if you update to 12A, you can not go back to 11A.
What this means is everyone is instructed to NOT update. In the event that they update the bootloader unlock to allow V1 devices, you will already be on V2.
While 12A fixes a few missed touches with the touchscreen (software issue), it ultimately will break ability to receive notifications over WiFi (there is a fix in the Play Store) and could hinder you unable to unlock your bootloader (for flashing custom roms and stuff) moving forward.
The G4 is an awesome device but at this time only the Tmobile and Sprint have custom recoveries. The Verizon is stuck with only root. We CAN "flash" stuff with an app, so things like Xposed and stuff are working. No big deal as there seems to be a lot of people working on this device to crack it open. I just want you to be informed when you make your purchase.
However LG is releasing a new phone coming out, the LG V10. It is basically the same phone but has a second display at the top for quick shortcuts, media controls, etc. So you may want to look into that too. Also the new Nexus Devices have just been release recently, which are other options. Me personally, I would recommend the G4 still. The DoubleTap2Wake/Sleep is so addicting and will change how you use your phone. It also has Wireless Charging (with an addition of a Qi Sticker). The addition of a second display looks pretty cool, but probably will only work with LG specific apps. No one knows if anyone will be able to customize the ability of the second screen. As for the Nexus devices, the 5X and the 6X are a little too small and a little too big for me. The LG Nexus would be my first choice out of the 2015 Nexii. However the LG software is very very cool. It is AOSP enough but has very useful little changes that will be missed on a bland AOSP rom (floating dialer, messaging, clip board, etc). Also DoubleTap2Wake is finicky on the AOSP roms. So if you desire the need to use AOSP, go with one of the Nexus. If you are sold on the G4 (like I am) then just do it. You'll be good.
UPDATE:
Just saw your Ninja edit with making the purchase. Worry not. Welcome to the community.

Hi player911,
Thanks for the great welcome to the LG G4 community! I did make the decision to not worry about the V10 and appreciate your opinion on that. I'm excited about the phone, I've been on the Note 2 forever. Didn't use the stylus much (the times I did to make quick notes I can instead just use pen and paper and "scan" it with the camera into OneNote.) Verizon already shipped it Fedex, will probably get it Monday.

T-Mobile bloat removal?

Hi everyone,
I've just ordered a D851. But I'm an ATT network user. Is there a good list somewhere of all the T-Mo bloat that can be removed? Basically, I'd like to strip this thing down as close to a Google Play Edition experience as possible.
I've gone through the development section without seeing a GPE ROM, so for now I might just use the subtractive approach. I've followed recommendations for debloat on other phones but haven't seen such a guide here.
While I'm at it, my phone will be new (bought from Amazon), but presumably will be a couple updates behind the times. Will it likely be able to OTA even though it won't be on the T-Mo network? Some phones I've had just need any internet connection to pull OTAs, others check for their home network / SIM registry before doing an OTA over either cell or wifi.
Thanks. Looking forward to joining the party. This seems to be the very best 5.5" screen phone going!
I would use system app remover ..its a root only app in the play store. I would do any ota updates before rooting

Sounds good. I understand T-Mo has a root sniffing/ reporting app that runs and squeals on you for warranty purposes... But my phone is coming from Amazon and won't be used on T-Mo so presumably my warranty is with LG directly so that's no worry if I root to do house cleaning.
I plan to run mostly stock for a while before sampling ROMs.

LG G Pad II 8.0 V498 sub forum ?

Hello,
I am trying to root an LG G Pad 2 8.0 (V498) but i cannot find the subforum for it, it doesnt seem to exist...
Does anyone knows where i can find any infos for this model ?
thanks!
its a relatively new model, especially in Canada.
I got one from Fido Wireless, but the sticker says v497; I have the gpad 2 8.0, but with wrong sticker?
anyways, there are plenty of guides to try in the lg g3 forum along side the one click root methods like kingoroot, root genius, and more...
LTE / data units are v495, v496, v497, and the wifi only version g pad II is V498 all sport the same hardware features other than data of course. I've rooted my v495 using the method in the all info v496 thread and it looks like they are making headway in development.
Thank you, Bryan.
that clarifies things for me.
so, do we know whats being worked on? like recoveries, kernels, etc...?
if so, do we know about cross-compatibility for each model?
Hi there will anyone out there be able to direct me to the root method for the Lg G Pad
Rogers version v497 any help would be appreciated

Look here, use at your own risk, I recently bricked my V495 AT&T trying to load TWRP Custom recovery. Rooting was not a problem though.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/help/tmobile-gpad-f-8-0-v496-info-t3139894
Being that there is no v498 sub, I guess I'll side track this thread a little. Someone mentioned here that v495-v498 are all essentially the same hardware. My son cracked the screen on his v498. I found only 1 supplier selling a specific v498 screen, from China, for $90.. I have found plenty of the other models like v495 or v496 for a little cheaper and in the US. I'm wondering if anyone knows if these other LCD/Digitizers should work on the v498? I have it opened up and, I actually see a LG-V495 stamped in the plastic even though the back sticker says V498, so I am assuming the v495/v496 screens should work on this, but just want to verify before I order one.

This is a little late to the game, but here's what worked for me on the wifi-only LG G Pad II 8.0 (v498), and it might help others.
I used Kingroot (4.8.2) to root the tablet, then used Supersume Pro from the Play Store to remove Kingroot and install Supersu. (I'd tried a couple other methods for removing Kingroot first, but they didn't work, and Supersume Pro (v. 9.3.7) nworked really quickly and with zero pain, so that's the method I'd recommend. It does cost a few bucks, but IMO, it was worth it for the ease of use.) It's working perfectly. (Supersume Pro is available at the Play store at: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=darkslide.com.supersumepro -- can't post the link because I'm a new member.)
I've rooted before using clockwork mod, etc., on other devices, but Kingroot does make rooting simpler. If you don't trust Kingroot for rooting, another method might work, but I had trouble finding one specifically for this device.
Cons to using Kingroot (and keeping it):
1. It installs a cleaner app called "Purify" which you may or may not want, and which you have to install to get to the rooting screen. It can be uninstalled separately, though.
2. Kingroot really messed with my Okay Google app. It turns itself on in "Accessibility" mode (or however you might put that correctly), and when turned off from the Accessibility settings, Okay Google will work again. However, Kingroot "insists" on turning itself on in the Accessibility settings, and will keep resetting, overriding your setting. It may also hijack other aspects of the tablet that I didn't notice -- I replaced it with SuperSU shortly after rooting.
3. Many people are nervous about the amount of data sent to the Kingroot servers in China during the rooting process. I'm on the fence about whether it's dangerous or not. I think it potentially is -- regardless of the location or ownership of the servers -- but I have no idea whether it's *actually* dangerous or not. If that aspect worries you, you should try another method to root your tablet. I think I would have been more reluctant to use Kingroot if I had the version of this tablet with the sim card.
4. Kingroot is quite recalcitrant to removal and replacement. Two methods that I used to try to remove Kingroot (without unrooting the device) didn't work -- and even after the program was no longer on the tablet, I could not replace its su with a different binary. I had to reinstall and uninstall using SuperSume. I might have had better results replacing it with SuperSu manually if I'd been more patient, but I didn't want to spend too much time on it.
Pros to using Kingroot:
1. It's fast.
2. It requires little technical skill.
3. It can be removed and replaced with SuperSu (or, presumably, some other superuser manager), though that ranges from very easy (using SuperSume) to extremely difficult (especially if you don't play with rooting a lot -- and people with only one or two Android devices generally root once then forget it till the next time they need to root a new device, and so don't have a huge amount of experience with it).
I hope this helps someone!
I'm going to be receiving my tablet soon and since it's stuck with Android 5.0 I was hoping to find a custom ROM with Android 6 but it turns out there's not even a thread for this device. Does anybody knows of any ROMs for this device? I'm getting mine from Fido and it's also LTE enabled. Rooting is not required for me since I'm not really into customization much but having the latest version of Android is important.

I also have an V497 - Fido and would like to change the ROM since it becomes slow and almost unusable. Stuck on Android 5. Have you finally found any options like LOS or other working for G Pad II V495-V498 family?
Thanks in advance

Need help/advice

Advice Please:
I have a G3 with PacMan ROM and it's freaking sweet. However, my infrared/camera (which I use hundreds of times/day for work) is not working when I shoot certain types of materials (works on leather, blurs on cloth now). I was planning on just waiting to get the G4 when more ROMs were out. However, now I'm rushed to pull the trigger. So here's my question:
I want to not activate my G4, but use it for work over wi-fi and continue to use my G3 for everything else (calls/texts). Since I had to order my G4 to get more GB, the Verizon rep is telling me that I can have the G4 and keep my service on the G3. However, they will need to 1) Activate the G4/Deactivate G3, 2) Deactivate G4/Reactivate G3. Will I have any problems reactivating my G3 since it's rooted and ROMmed? Will this cause any problems with Verizon? Will they even notice?
Also, If I'm able to do this... Can I go ahead and root/Rom the inactivated G4 and activate it once a satisfactory ROM is out (and installed on it)?
I know this is complex and doesn't do many people much good, so MANY THANKS to whoever lends a hand!!!!!
I hate being in this predicament... If only we lived in a world where all the ROMs were available to all carriers within the first month of release... if only... LOL

What's going to be your next device?

My deepest apologies if this is in the wrong place, but I need to ask this question some place. If this has been asked before, the search did not return anything that caught my eye, please feel free to point me in the correct direction! Considering that I have Verizon as a carrier and live in the US, I thought I would ask this audience to see what device has caught your eye!
My upgrade date is drawing near and I need to decide on a device that I want to give a shot next, and I would like to avoid being disappointed in my next device.
What is your next device going to be, and why?
I have been keeping my eye on the newest Nexus (now the Pixel) phones, but I really can't see myself giving up my sd card slot. I am also kind of partial to the removable battery.
I really like this phone, but the development has been poor due to Verizon's locked bootloader. I have a feeling this will be the case with ALL Verizon phones, but I have unlocked bootloaders in the past (Even my Note 3 finally got a bootloader unlock!).
My real pull to the Nexus/Pixel was the fact that it's a Google phone, it gets the latest Operating System updates, and AFAIK they were able to unlock the bootloader in the past (please correct me if I am wrong, as I have not really ever owned a Nexus device).
I really enjoy the ability to install a custom Rom and modify the OS (I LOATHE the stock DPI on most devices!!!) and I can't exactly get tethering on my package (but there is usually an app for that ). I would like to find something powerful enough to keep me happy for the next few months, because lets face it, we all start to long for a new device.
Thank you for your time and consideration!

How are you liking it? And how is the development?
Are you a heavy phone user? What is the battery life like?

The phone itself is awesome but I'm having some battery issues and trying to pinpoint what is causing the poor battery life. Development is fantastic since S-OFF and root were achieved via the Sunshine APK. There are tons of ROMs and kernels to flash. I miss having a removable battery but the HTC 10 does have a micro-SD slot.
I'm not in the market for a new phone to replace my G4 yet, but after getting a bootloop replacement with the first gen manufacturing date, I probably will be looking sooner rather than later. I get to stay on the unlimited data family share plan through a corporate discount, so I'm kind of curious if VZW still subsidizes new phones on those lines. If so, I'd miss out on the savings if I were to get a Pixel, which I presume will only be offered at full price. I've been out of the loop since MM came out and made it harder to mod Android, so it's good to see that at least there are some non-developer version phones out there still.

Is there an actual need to root?

I've recently rooted my phone and now I am questioning why I did it. The first phone I rooted was my Nexus One and I've been a member of this site since the release of the Galaxy S2 so I am no novice. It used to be a necessity to root for the increased control it gave, but now all I seem to be doing is finding solutions to get back functionality that I've lost through tripping Knox. Please, can anyone give me a reason or list the advantages of rooting the current generation of phones because I'm struggling to justify keeping the bootloader unlocked and not going back to stock?
No. I wouldn't... for you though the cat's already out of the bag.
If running on Pie I definitely wouldn't update to 10 or worse 11.

Like you, I've been rooting since my HTC-Hero way back in the early days of Android. It was necessary for better kernels, better battery life, better RAM and CPU management, better file systems (Early days of ARM and EXT4) and of course those cool themes and apps that only work with Root (Titanium Backup, Gosh I miss you!!). Not to mention what was my favorite, MIUI!
The last phone I rooted was the Nexus 6. It was a powerhouse! I still have it in a drawer full of old devices in my desk and miss it! Someone once told me when checking out my N6, "Your phone is like a muscle car!"
I miss rooting and I hate that carriers have locked the Bootloaders down. Android was founded on and was expanded by the Amateur Development community. Look up Cyanogen for details!.
I just bought my daughter this device outright - first, one I've ever bought that wasn't through my carrier and I'll be doing the same with the Pixel 6 for myself later this year which means I can finally go back to rooting and hopefully back to what earned me the RC title, but I also wonder, do I really NEED to root these??
My daughter isn't a power user. She's probably happy with whatever native settings and Samsung themes she can find on her own. My Pixel 4 XL has been great as is. so I applaud your question because I also wonder if rooting is still necessary or is it just a way to feel rebellious and outside the fray?
I also own a Pixel 4, bought to scratch an itch when I wanted to try out GrapheneOS.
I think I will go back to stock, which is sad as I enjoyed the process of modifying the phones software. If there was a net gain or increased functionality to keep the phone rooted, I would but unfortunately there isn't a compelling reason to keep the bootloader unlocked.
Am I wrong? Is the scene, at least for Samsung phones, dead and this forum obsolete?
Root is a must for me. Just being able to debloat. Either way I bought a unlock token
I understand the debloat of carriers useless apps, but since I found that ADB can basicly remove the programs I don't need root for that. But I still like root for change hosts files and such.
