Hey I have the same problem - any solution to this?
Try Settings -> Developer Options -> Default USB Configuration -> set to File Transfer
Had same problem, changed kernels suddenly went away
Flash kernel 1.02
my issue was fixed by a reflash of the image.

I flashed my phone to AOKP Build 30 this morning after trying build 28 yesterday. Everything went Ok and phone is running fine on new ROM. I decided to install Black theme on my GN, connected to my laptop (running WIN 7) again but now phone is not detected as USB device anymore. It starts charging phone which means, usb cable is working. I tried on my second PC same issue.
I will appreciate your help.
Do you have the USB "fast charge" feature enabled? If so disable it.
There is also this thread from someone else having the same problem.
But I would say in both cases the "fast charge" is the culprit.
Thanks for your reply. Where is Fast charge feature? I did not enable it. I will appreciate your help.
I just checked fast charge value is zero in ../says/kernal/fast charge.
I'm having the same issue on my GSM version. I came from AOKP build 28 to AOKP build 30. The phone charges but no storage device is detected by my windows 8 pc.
I have DISABLED fast charge and it makes no difference. I've also re-download and re-flashed build 30. In addition I've tried several different kernels all making no difference.
Any solutions???

Fast Charge is a feature of your kernel.. I use franco.kernel and the app that goes with it, in the app there is an option to turn it on and off. If that is not the issue hopefully you can find the answer within the other thread.
Turn on mtp.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I think all problems are related to ROM control settings as regards to the SD card. In performance I unchecked fast charge under kernel tweaks. Under startup tweaks I unchecked SD Boost. I also just disabled all startup tweaks. I rebooted and have full connectivity as well as USB debugging. Hope that helps.

That doesn't work. It's checked already.
I am sorry, I am new to Android. I will appreciate more detailed instructions on how to fix the issue or how to enable MTP etc.

1.) settings -> ROM control -> performance -> scroll down to kernel tweaks, uncheck Fast Charge
2.) settings -> ROM control -> Start-up Tweaks -> uncheck Enable SD boost/uncheck Enable start-up tweaks
3.) settings -> Storage -> three dots in lower right corner (settings) -> USB computer connection -> check MTP
If you didn't know what I was talking about before you probably don't have kernel tweaks or start up tweaks checked. It might be MTP (#3) although it wasn't in my case. Cheers.

First of all, big thanks for your help. In my case first two settings were already unchecked. The problem was in the third option where MTP was not checked in Storage.

Just a note, on build 28 I found that after disabling fast charge, you have to unplug then replug the USB to get detected. You can then re-enable fast charge without disrupting connection.
Fast charge option forces USB power sources to be treated like an AC charging adapter and removes the 500 miliamp limit.
I have the same problem, but.... with the stock rom, with the official 4.0.4 update.
I have tried everything: flash 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.0.4 downloaded from the official site. Reinstall drivers. Plug into another laptops. Custom roms. I've used the advices from this post (unchecks and checks)...flash original bootloaders, several recoveries... i don't know what else to do.
I'm connecting thanks to AirDroid and FileExpert (ftp transfer this one)
any idea?

I have done that for four times...and nothing, it's really really weird, my mtp is like dead.
And i am not the only one, in the spanish forum htcmania there are some people with my same problem.
It all started with the official update to 4.0.4 so i hope it would be fixed in the next update (if google won't do worst)

Recently installed:
Kernel - Lupus v7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2167766
ROM - Atomic GB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219154
The problem is that when I go to the options for enabling usb or wireless tethering the options are greyed out and i cannot click on them. Nothing is mentioned on the pages for the ROM and kernel about this and i have messaged the developers of both and am waiting for a response. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Edit:
Another thing; I've tried to configure the wireless hotspot, input ssd name, set secutiy and password up as such but i cannot save these settings as the save button is greyed out and connect be selected.

Hi,
I have a very strange issue and I am hoping that someone has a solution to this problem.
The tablet SM-T705 came with Build number KOT49H.T705XXU1ANG2 out of the box and it is not upgradeable.
Recently I bought a samsung galaxy tab s t705, The first thing that I wanted to do is root my new toy.
Obviously the first step in the process is to enable USB Debugging but it is a no go !
Here is what I am doing:
Settings > General > About device , Then tap the Build number 7 times.
Once I got the message that the developer mode is now enabled, I go back to the General tab but the "Developer options" are nowhere to be found.
I installed Nova launcher and tried to crate a shortcut for for the "Developer options" but all it does is throw me to the General settings tab in the settings.
I tried to factory reset the device and repeat the process but not luck.
I even tried some apps that are just shortcuts for the Developer options but it didn't help.
Any suggestions ?
I really need root (cant stand all the bloatware).
Thank you for your help !

Your on an old firmware, so that means you'll need to upgrade. Download mode does not need usb debugging. Simply put your device in download mode, flash newer firmware with odin, then root with cfautoroot. USB debugging is only needed to connect to PC while device is on. Hope this helps!
Thank!

It does not work for google stock rom, even changing the default setting in dev to mtp, my phone is not not recognising mtp as default for google stock rom.

Google stock ROM? Are you sure your USB cable is OK?
Same here.
Even though MTP is supposed to be the default mode, when I plug my phone to the computer, it is in "charging mode", and every time I have to open the notification and tap tap tap to select MTP… Quite cumbersome.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A (yeah it's unofficial)
LineageOS 15.1 (I used 2 different builds, both have the exact same issue)
Dear Community,
I am currently unable to activate the USB debugging mode on my unrooted Samsung Galaxy S9.
I have activated the developer mode.
USB debugging has alywasy been enabled in the past.
Since I wanted to use Helium, I double-checked that it is activated . but it is not.
The option is grayed out and there is a message saying "USB-Edugging mode will start as soon as usb is connected (translated from german)".
No matter waht I tried, nothing worked out.
Can you please help me out?
Best regards
Bacardi Man
I've noticed on older Samsung devices that if OEM Unlock is enabled then that will grey out USB debugging. The fix was to disable OEM unlock and reboot. Of course, if you're waiting on the 7 day thing to root that may reset the timer. I'm not sure about that since root will never be an option on my US version.
Thank you for the hint, but OEM unlock isn't activated and has never been as I am using Secure Folder (Knox).
Any other suggestions?

Looks like it is probably KNOX causing it
https://seap.samsung.com/content/why-usb-debugging-mode-disabled-knox
https://seap.samsung.com/forum-topic/can-i-use-usb-debugging-mode-device-running-knox
Solution 3: Use USB debugging mode on a device running KNOX (For Samsung )
By default, My KNOX and KNOX Premium (through CellWe EMM) disables USB debugging on a device when it creates a secure container.
IT admins KNOX Premium (through CellWe EMM) can later enable USB debugging mode through the Admin Portal: Simply select Policies > Mobile > Samsung KNOX Device Settings > Restrictions Settings > Permit USB debugging = Yes. On the device, you need to go to Android Settings, enable Developer options, then enable USB debugging. The exact steps vary depending on your Android version, as described in Using Hardware Devices.
If you are using My KNOX, you cannot enable USB debugging mode while the container is installed. Unfortunately, you have to root your device and uninstall 'My KNOX' (enter Knox, chose Knox settings app -> More Information -> unistall Knox.), then you will be able to turn on USB debugging mode.
