Yes it is and no there's not. It's all down to personal preference and only you know what you like best.
It depends on your preference. Ever since safetynet, custom roms have been a nightmare with security issues or being up to date with making it pass.
Also, having a Google device, you'll be giving up running the latest software updates as you would have to wait for when the developer has the time to integrate it.
Android has matured much since it's induction and the use of EZ Root for a one-click root as it now has ways to customize it in a functional matter in ways that you needed a custom rom for.
If you enjoy changing colors or themes and are willing to sacrifice security and some functionality, then you have your answer.
To me honestly, it's no longer worth it. Having to scour the forums every time there's a bug, troubleshooting issues, or for updates takes way too much time that I no longer have. I just want a phone that does eveything I need to simplify my everyday life, not make it complicated. Don't care for red, blue, green status bars or settings app, or having a custom boot animation for a device that never needs a reset. Function over form for me.

I've flashed most all of the popular ones, and while I like most of the features they offer, I have settled on plain ol stock + root with some substratum themes to darken things up. I don't think it's particularly difficult to flash a custom rom now that I've pretty much got the A/B partition thing figured out, but I like to update my device the day a new factory image comes out, then just flash twrp and root again, and I'm up to date in about 20 minutes time with no data loss. But it's like P70shooter said...it's really up to your personal preference, and what your looking for :good:
I haven't flashed any ROMS recently, but it's because of the reasons mentioned before. They don't offer enough benefit over stock + rooted to be worth losing GPay and monthly updates. Root access basically let's you tweak any part of the phone to your liking anyway.
I think ROM developers realize this and it's contributing to a scarcity of quality ROMs anyway.
I've thought about this also. But Stock is so good on this Phone. That just Rooting to use Edge Sense to change squeeze actions and TWRP, black Bootmation. I'm good. Plus installing custom ROMS isnt easy with the A B partion stuff. Stock + Root:good:

P70shooter, are u the maker of the screwd ROM on angler?
AquariOS had been Rock solid for me, and I know @Badger50 would agree. I get his position about the updates process though so your best bet in my opinion is to try one and see what your own opinion is. The squeeze thing is missing from custom roms, so if you dig that you might miss it. I'm still on Feb. Update and might just hang here for the summer unless I get bored. Lol again I would at least try one before you decide...

Not worth it anymore. Haven't unlocked bootloader or did anything since the first pixel release.
I've tried most of the custom roms as well. Most of them have some nice touches that I use. However, the one thing missing for the last several months on all custom roms is verizon wifi calling. You should try them out yourself and decide.
I used to run Gravity Box when I had xposed installed on a previous device, but from what I understand, it's not possible to use xposed and pass safety net....is that still true?

That's right
I've been a big time custom ROM user, flashed them as often as I could on previous phones. Stock+root+xposed does every single thing I need on the p2xl though.
has anyone noticed that display quality seems better on custom roms?
specifically Carbon rom vs Stock for me.
screen looks more bright and clear.
It really depends on your usage. I used to flash custom roms on all of my devices, primarily for themes and debloating. Up until the Nexus 6, it was well worth it. However, with Google's monthly security patches, maintaining a custom ROM is a lot more work. If you use custom themes, expect to have to disable themes every time there are app or rom updates, then reapply. With a busy work schedule, it simply became too much of a hassle and to be honest, stock ROMs have gotten a lot smoother.

I'm an Android novice, never had an Android phone before. I like Motorola Defy but have some concerns, before considering buying it, as follows.
First thing: Getting rid of MotoBlur
MotoBlur software is cumbersome and unnecessary (fixed by flashing stock MB525 firmware)
Click to collapse
Second: dealing with locked bootloader (maybe a huge problem)
Locked bootloader means there wont be any custom ROMs for the phone until someone is able to get past it without bricking theirs.

However, I've seen custom ROMs here, such as Defy: How to install Custom ROM, BlueGinger 2.3 UI ROM for Defy, etc.
The bootloader is what loads up the operating system in very simple terms. By locking or signing it, it means that we need to present Motorola's certificate every time we want to load a custom ROM/kernel.
Though what he says is true, you can still root the phone, install pseudo-custom ROMs (they are all right here in the forums) and do tons of other things.
This is still a great great phone though and probably the best in the market in my opinion.

A friend wrote me this:
As I can see, it has MIUI, CM7, etc, the most important ROMs are already there, if it gets more popular, more ROMs will be available. Once you unlock bootloader, be careful not to lock it again, i.e. do not use the official update. I never had Defy, but I think it should be done relatively easily, maybe not easy as with HTC Desire, for instance.

I found this on the forum:
Locked Bootloader means that you can't boot an unsigned Kernel.
All the Custom rom you can find for the Defy are made from official and signed ROM, no Kernel mods etc . (These are just mod of actual rom, non "new ROM" from AOSP i.e.)
That's why you can't have a full custom ROM with Custom Kernel (unless Motorola release a ROM with this Kernel signed)

And this:
So what are the ways can we improve overall performance on the kernel level?
As of today you can't
Sorry. I don't like being the one that delivers bad news, but unfortunately for users due moto's locked bootloader policy, they have essentially locked us all out of the most valuable component of the computer technology we purchased. MOTO FAIL!

Does it change something?
Correct me if I'm wrong, these custom ROMs are not really custom, since kernel part can not be changed. Does that affect speed & other customizations -- really do not know. Am I wrong?
Thank you for reading this. If you think Defy is too complicated you may suggest another phone in that price range (GSM, not CDMA, unlocked).

according to my habits it doesn't bother me to see moto logo every time , but living in android world (2.1) before getting the second update for a long time it's nasty.
so i think in case u wanna buy something real cool try to check htc daulboot which never has loader problem.
that's my personal opinion but comparing it's features (defy) to other similar releases (sony ericsson) or etc it's really cool , plus all add the reality of power of combining the processor requirement . 800 mhz to 1.2 ghz
so enjoy whith moto logo.

these are some really good questions. I am in the same boat as the OP. Any replies to his questions would be great
moto says they are going to unlock the bootloader by year's end... hope they keep their promise.
Will they unlock all models or just the new ones? I am afraid i already know the answer to that question - "we dont know yet" .
I guess the answer is that customizing Defy everything would be more complicated than HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S.
I don't wanna spend days in playing with the phone, trying to get off Motoblur and put nice custom ROM.
So, I would move to Desire or Galaxy... even though I don't want to. Would you agree?
I'm on CM7, it's fast and stable, with good battery life, themes and much more.
As soon as camera gets completely fixed i will be able not to care at all about a locked bootloader!

But Galaxy S does not have locked bootloader. I'm a total novice. Defy with CM7 sounds great, but how to get from standard Defy with Motoblur to CM7? As s novice? I am sure you can understand my perspective.
My final choice would be one of these: Defy, Desire or Galaxy S. I like Defy since is smaller and rigged. Knowing all that, care to share an advice? I'm a novice, never used Android before.

Bootloader is still locked, but take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
I made it without problems, but i see many reports of bootloops etc...
Camera preview doesn't always match with the picture taken, at least in widescreen mode.
Just tried to use the "defy camera hack":

Lost widescreen mode but pictures look much better.
Beside this no problems at all, it's stable, fast and battery last more than a single day with average use.
well the thing is for our phones *motorola* our boot loaders are locked but we are using pseudo roms. so mostly we have partial roms. no change in the kernel which have extra functions. all our roms are based on a leak or some official release from motorola. boot loops are mostly due to incorrect versions flashed on non down gradable versions or just a simple thing like a step over looked * most of our roms require a wipe, so dalvik and a factory restore is needed as some apps are incompatible when you flash*

My advice: Buy Defy and enjoy it! (trust me, you will enjoy it)
Keep it stock for few days to make sure that everything is ok with it and to reach max battery potential (3-4 times 0-100% & 100-0%) and after go for any ROM you want, they all are great (I am using barebones and i can tell you that this is 120% working)

I'm coming from an HD2 and rooting and flashing was reasonable because Windows OS was bull**** and it wasted battery. Can anyone give me some cons and pros of SGS2 rooting and/or flashing roms?
CONS: none unless influenced by user's stupidity.
PROS: Developers optimizes ROMS and kernels for use of our hardware
-smoother
-faster
-longer battery life
-Nandroids
-backup of apps/data (in case of emergencies)
-free wifi tether
-use of apps that requires root
-themes/customizatons
-earlier "updates"
-custom apps (unlimited pandora!)
-remove bloatware
-Addiction to flashing ROMS (could be a negative?)
-soon MIUI/AOSP/CM9/ICS!
-lots more but can't think of any, i'll let my fellow XDAs finish the list.
Probably for similar reasons as your WinMo phone, though different ppl do it for different reasons. Pro's of rooting give you more flexibility in picking the rom with features you like. If you don't like the bloatware that comes with the phone, some rom removes them. Some folks like to overclock or undervolt to improve performance or batt life, rooting and roms lets you do that.
As for downside, rooting risks voiding warranty with T-Mo. You risk bricking your phone. OTA updates won't apply to your phone once rooted. HTH.

you can flash it back to STOCK to "unvoid" warranty
Stupidity leads to users bricking the phone regardless of root lol
you apparently can do OTA updates while still using some ROMs but might cause complications... you can then use kies or flash it back to stock to do OTA updates.
Alright thanks fellas, that was informative but I have one more question. If I flash a rom on it, like the popular Juggernaut ROM, I won't lose any features that I have on the stock ROM, right?

You will have the features of the new ROM, so you need to research the ROM before loading it. Some have replaced stock Samsung Touchwiz features with other custom features in order to make the ROM more tailored and/or perform better. So yes, you might lose something, but you may gain a lot more.

They might replace one feature with another, say for instance touchwiz replaced by another launcher. Or add features like quick settings and more reboot options. For me the themes make it all worth it.

For me, rooting my phone is an entirely separate decision from flashing custom ROMs.
I root my phone to have complete control over it (for several reasons, including removal of CIQ spyware)
However I have been quite happy with the Stock ROM (Debloated, removed CIQ) - and flashing alternate ROMs/Radios/Kernels is not always desirable IMHO
We do have an excellent development community here with a lot of dedicated Devs taking the time to support our device, so if you should choose to flash ROMs you will have a decent collection to choose from and great support from the Devs/Community
For me, it's all about the Stock ROM, rooted. Performs like a champ and I swap launchers anyway so I don't deal with TouchWiz (don't care for it, it's sluggish compared to LauncherPro). Actually if someone who had a completely stock phone picked up mine they would probably think I was on a different ROM with all the mods/apps I run. Lockscreen, Launcher, Widget/App Themes, all different and carefully customized. Flashing another ROM would just mean I'd have to do the same exact setup again on another ROM, so there's really no benefit for me.
Even when ICS gets released for our phones, I will wait for the official T-Mo release, then root it, etc.
Like the nike ad says: just do it. I paid to have mine rooted cause I never used odin before. The guy did exactly what the stickies said word for word. He flashed beastmod 4.2 on it. Hey! With all the scares of IMEI loss and all that, I don't feel the need to flash any custom roms. I was wondering if there are any mods for a stock rooted rom that can be applied? to give the feel of a custom rom without actually flashing any?
Good question and smart thinking. I have been extremely cautious with how I go about flashing things on this AMAZING device. So far I have flashed nothing! I can't find a single flaw that would make me want to flash a custom rom and risk losing funtionality. I have owned many smartphones and this is the first one that had me content with STOCK. We know that flashing enhances functionality when hard working devs come up with custom roms, kernels and mods, but come on?, how many devices have left you content with stock until more is learned about the device?
Not sure if you could get Google wallet by modding a stock rom. Tethering is possible

Yes Google wallet can be had on the stock Rom with just root and a build prop edit, then install the modded Apk it's a sticky somewhere in these forums. And just installing a new launcher can allow you to change the look of a lot of the phone.. I for one flashed a bunch and still have my imei but maybe I'm just lucky.

Hi there.
You have not specified which model G3 you have but either way the best custom ROM 5.1.1 (based on CM 12.1) at the moment is BlissPop and you can have more info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/rom-blisspop-v2-0-ls990-t3022685
It is a an extremely stable ROM, with lots of Official releases for all G3 models, it comes supplied with LOADS of options to customize your phone the way you want it and it has many dedicated people helping others for support, including myself.
As far as options to custom it surely has lots more than stock ROMS. It is much fluid and smooth. And this goes for any AOSP ROM compared to plain stock.
As far as battery goes surely depends on usage but you can get with a few extra tweaks around 5 hours SOT and up to 2 days with little use.
Your phone will not be worth more in the market shall you want to resell it but you can always go back to stock anytime.
Rooting and flashing custom ROMS is way better than stock and more fun. There are risks involved but if you are careful and take the time to understand and read and learn first BEFORE doing something wrong you will be fine.
Hope this helps you.
*I rooted my phone the same day I bought it 6 months ago and been having lots of fun with it. Just take your time to read things and don't jump too quick into things and you will be fine.
Hope this helps and if I did please press the thanks button.

Woah ! That's nice to know. Congrats on your switch and welcome to the wonderful world of Android. Lol
I totally understand about being fed up with apple. And tbh with updating android you will gain functionally but also lose abilities to use certain things such as mods and apps that haven't been updated. It can both be a win and or a lose. But not too major.
And for a new comer to an Android device I'd say stay stock right now. Get to know your device and read all over XDA on the potential and great things your device is capable of.
Once you get through that your first step is to root and then choose your ROM and mods.
Xposed will be your main go to for mods.

I appreciate this. It is a refreshing change from apple, whom in my opinion locks you into their singular way of doing things and users dont really have the freedom to opt out. New exploits are patched within days, old firmware stops being signed by apple within about a week so that once you update you can never go back. They are making things really tough for the jailbreak community, which is ultimately the reason I chose to switch. So far, I really like my 5x. Only issue I am worried about right now is battery life and not making it thru a full day. I taken measures in order to reduce power consumption, but theres only so much you can do as you know.

And for a new comer to an Android device I'd say stay stock right now. Get to know your device and read all over XDA on the potential and great things your device is capable of.
Once you get through that your first step is to root and then choose your ROM and mods.
Xposed will be your main go to for mods.
Thanks for you input BTW good luck on your new device ! :good:

I appreciate this. It is a refreshing change from apple, whom in my opinion locks you into their singular way of doing things and users dont really have the freedom to opt out. New exploits are patched within days, old firmware stops being signed by apple within about a week so that once you update you can never go back. They are making things really tough for the jailbreak community, which is ultimately the reason I chose to switch. So far, I really like my 5x. Only issue I am worried about right now is battery life and not making it thru a full day. I taken measures in order to reduce power consumption, but there is only so much you can do as you know.
Still running Stock 6.0 not rooted,
Really wanted to upgrade to 7.1.1, Notification just sits there.
I am afraid of that whole Bootloop problem that everyone has been complaining about.

I would just go for it. The bootloop didn't affect that many people, and I thought they fixed it? A lot of people are running 7.1 now.

I'm still really afraid of it
I´m also using MM. AOKP is the only ROM I could get that applies Security Patches very often. And I will stay on MM until Xposed lands into Nougat
